Summer Faith Story Series—Missionpalooza Reflection from Travis

Our scriptural motto for Missionpalooza this year was “Here I am, Lord,” from Isaiah 6. As this year’s program leader, I focused on the idea of call. In my evening messages, I talked about the ways in which God calls us and about the gifts that God calls out of us. We explored prayer techniques in order to discern “where my great love meets the world’s great need.”

So, in a way, our work paralleled that of Jesus’ in his own first vocation as a carpenter’s son. Drawing on the story in Luke 2, when Jesus stays behind in the temple, I talked about how we become awakened to God’s call when we feel enkindled by encountering God in meaningful and surprising ways.

Kitchen News

On Thursday, July 14, the health department inspected the kitchen. We got a 100 score! A copy of the report is in the kitchen. A perfect score like this is the result of dedication and hard work on part of each group serving a ministry that uses the kitchen. Thank you!

Kitchen instruction classes are available. The class schedule (typically the second Sunday of the month) is:

August 14 An introduction to (1) Kitchen Safety—physical safety, food safety, and health department concerns; (2) Equipment—how to use it and clean it; and (3) Cleaning the room and closing.

September 11 (1) An overview of storage areas; and (2) Food production and food storage, which includes basic knife skills, cooking techniques, and food storage guidelines.

Classes meet noon-1:30 pm in the kitchen. There will be time for questions and answers after each session. Submitted by Chris Schumacher, Business Manager

R2F (Roots to Fruit) Summer Day Camp

August 16, 17, 18, 2:00 – 5:00 pm

Children and youth are heartily encouraged to join Travis and Susan for three days of for-mation and fellowship. Roots to Fruit is an organic vision of spiritual growth and Christian service for children and youth grades K-12.

This August, the Family Ministry Team is offering a 3-day formation program for children to explore the many branches of the church. Each day we will focus on a particular limb of our faith community (Tuesday: Scripture and Sacra-ment; Wednesday: Music; Thursday: Ministry).

Anyone interested in attending, please contact Susan Goodman ([email protected]). We hope that you can join in this exciting opportunity to grow and serve! Submitted by Travis Helms

F2W (Fruit to Wine) Summer Night Camp

While the children and youth deepen their relationship with the church during the day, we invite youth, young adults, parents, grandparents, and pretty much anyone this side of glory to join us to do the same in the evening. If you’ve been looking for a way to get more involved or perhaps just want to try something new, check out our offerings below.

Wednesday, August 17, 6:00-7:00 pm Greeter Training: Join our Greeter leadership team at 5:00 pm at Galaxy Cafe for a little food, fellowship, and information session. Then, starting at 6:00 pm in the sanctuary, participate in training that will allow you to be a greeter for our 10:30 sanctuary service. This is a great, low-commitment, high-reward way to know more people in our parish and serve God in our shared worship. All ages welcome! For more information or questions contact Fr. Christian at [email protected]

Thursday, August 18, 6:00-8:00 pm Acolyte and Family Service Host Training: Starting at 5:00 pm in B-18, the family ministry staff will provide a meal and lively conversation to all those interested in serving as an acolyte or a family service host. Then at 6:00 pm acolytes will head upstairs to work on their craft, while family service hosts will head over to Huffman Hall to learn how to make that space ready for worship on Sundays. Unabashedly Episcopalian

The Bishop of Texas, Andy Doyle will be joining us for St. Matthew’s Day on Sept 25. In prepara-tion for his visit and all of the associated baptisms, confirmations, and receptions, we will be study-ing his book, Unabashedly Episcopalian, which introduces and celebrates our tradition. If you are an adult interested in being baptized, confirmed, or received into the Episcopal Church, please contact Fr Christian immediately so he can get you a copy of the book and help you navigate the process of your choice. This is going to be an especially joyous day, so if you’ve been considering officially becoming part of our family, now’s a great time! Submitted by Christian Hawley

Senior Warden’s State of the Parish Address

Dear Parish Family:

As your senior warden, from time to time I’ll offer up a word on the health of our parish. I want you to know that as of July, our parish is strong and healthy in every way. Our Sunday attendance is trending upward (surprisingly so in the summer), while our ministries and outreach programs are flourishing and diversifying. In the coming weeks, I’ll be speaking with you regarding many exciting opportunities on the horizon for our church community. For now, please know that your vestry is working hard to formulate targeted objectives for the next six, twelve, and eighteen months. We want to capture your ideas and feedback as we do this strategic planning, so please be on the lookout for some surveys this fall. In the meantime, if you have ideas or feedback you’d like to share, please grab one of our vestry members, including our newest member, Matt Thompson, who will be serving out the remainder of Sandra Bravo’s term. Matt and his family have brought a lot to our parish, and we look forward to this entrepreneur and former senior warden sharing a lot of wisdom and creativity with our leadership team. So introduce yourself to Matt and then let him know your thoughts on how we can make St. Matthew’s even better.

I also want you to know that as we end our second quarter of the year, our financial position is good. We are within budget, however we know that our costs in the second half of the year will increase. This means it is critical that each member or family make every effort to keep your pledge current, or if you haven’t made a pledge, to consider investing in our communal life this summer. It is important that we finish this year on a solid financial footing and not start 2017 in the red. There is a pledge card in the seat back in front of you when you are at church. Please do not hesitate to contact our business manager Chris Schumacher at [email protected] if you need more information. You can also go to our website, www.stmattsaustin.org and click the “Give Online” button to make a donation. Our ministry planning depends on our pledging horizon, so please help us on both fronts and continue to invest your time, talent, treasure, and voice in our life together.

Thanks for all you do to make St. Matthew’s such a wonderful community,

Doug O’Connell Senior Warden

Holy Meals on Wheels

So far this summer we’ve run, paddled, and hiked—now it’s time for a Eucharist on a bike. Okay, maybe not on a bike, but we are going to go for a bike ride and then celebrate the Eucharist. We’ll meet at Govalle Park to ride the Walnut Creek Hike and Bike trail on Saturday, August 20, at 5:42 pm. The Walnut Creek trail is a bikes- and pedestrian-only paved path along Boggy Creek and Walnut Creek on the east side of Austin. Therefore, people of all ages, and bikes of all kinds are welcome. Some of us might ride 3 miles, others 23, but we’ll rally back at the park at 7:00 pm for the Lord’s Supper. Friends from St. James and St. Michael’s will be joining us, so come on out for some Episcopal camaraderie too. If you have any questions, contact Fr. Christian at [email protected]. Feeding the less fortunate part of St. Matt’s outreach

As part of the church’s efforts to support Caritas Food Pantries, St. Matthew’s parishioners are asked to donate a non-perishable food item each week to Sunday service.

If you’d like to bring something, this week’s main needs are: fresh fruit; canned items such as chicken and ham, spaghetti sauce, mixed vegetables, beets, fruit cocktail and pineapple; cold cereals; dry beans (pinto, northern, black); and Hamburger Helper-type meals, although other appropriate items that aren’t on the list would be welcome too. At the moment the pantries have plenty of canned tuna.

Please be sure that donated food items are not in glass containers nor past their expiration date as they have to be thrown away. Caritas collection baskets are in the Sanctuary Commons and in Huffman Hall. Young St. Matt’s parishioners help out each week by taking one of the baskets up to the altar to be blessed.

If you weren’t able to bring an item this week and would like to contribute a $1:00 or more, there is a Caritas money box near the collection baskets in the Sanctuary Commons. The proceeds are used to purchase food.

Thank you for your support. Submitted by: Jane Baxter Lynn

Habitat for Humanity—Save the Date

St Matthew’s will once again be participating in Austin’s All Faith’s Build. Our work Saturdays this year will be September 17 and October 15, with the dedication on November 19. We will also be providing lunch for the entire work crew on Sep-tember 17. More to come on the family we’re helping and how to sign up, but for now keep those dates open on your calen-dar to help us build a better Austin. Submitted by Christian Hawley

Getting to Know The Right Reverend Andy Doyle, Bishop of Texas

Leading up to the bishop’s visit, we’ll occasionally feature pieces by Andy about his vision for the diocese and the future mission of the Episcopal Church as well as links to some of his other writings. Recently, Andy wrote a response to the police shootings in Dallas, “By the Waters of Babylon We Lay Down and Weep: Thoughts on Dallas, America, and A Way For-ward.” We invite you to click on the link and read this moving reflection, if you haven’t yet. Family Service Dates: July 31 in Huffman Hall August 7 unless otherwise August 14 indicated August 21 Backpack Sunday, Combined Service, Sanctuary

With utter honesty, I will tell you that this week of mission was one of the most amazing, and spiritually vitalizing, of my entire life. The camaraderie and personal growth shared by these young disciples felt palpable. I attribute this connection and community to a number of factors. Most basically, the quality of the facilities (and the daily meals!) that the San Marcos Academy, a Baptist preparatory school, graciously offered us was astounding. Secondly, since our teams worked continuously on specific sites throughout the week, we were able to see the net impact of our work—both physically, in the actual struc-ture and emotionally, in the responses of the homeowners. Lastly, this year, the Missionpalooza leadership team implemented a no cellphone policy. Rather than logging in and “checking out” during free time, the participants this year spent more time forging friendships with one another. This was a strong testament, for me personally, of the growth that disciples of all ages can undergo when we free ourselves from distraction and concentrate together on the work and vision of building God’s Kingdom.
