Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time July 30, 2017

Like many of you, I suppose, my heart is filled with a mixture of melancholy and excitement, with a touch of aggravation thrown in, as we spend our last Sunday in this church. Just six weeks shy of 14 years in this building and I am thankful to God for the many blessings He has bestowed upon us during our stay at 8300 Morganford Road. In

those 14 years our church was privileged to celebrate approximately 525 baptisms, 500 First Communions, 355 Confirmations, 103 weddings, 756 funerals and numerous Masses wherein the Gospel was proclaimed and the Eucharist was shared. Since our first day in this building—September 13, 2003—on every single day, around 5,070 of them, people of faith have walked out of this building knowing they have been imbued by God Himself, resolving to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ. What a joy it has been for me to be a part of so many special and sacred moments. What an honor it has been to absorb the presence of God not only through the Sacraments but also through the many social and charitable activities that have occurred in this building. All of us have been blessed to have been a part of what has taken place here.

Now we are just six days away from our first Mass in our newly-renovated church. We move knowing that, like He always does, God stands ready to inspire, forgive, feed and send forth His children, us, to continue the proclamation of the Gospel and season our homes and neighborhoods with the love of Christ. While this move has been aggravating and frustrating, it has been a time of hope, also. Let us continue to pray in appreciation for what has occurred at 8300 Morganford and in expectation of the blessings God is ready to give on Ripa Avenue.

I hope many of you can come by the church this afternoon. If you are coming, know that parking is available on both sides of the gymnasium and on the east side (by the ball fields) of the school. Handicap parking spots are available on the west side (the rectory side) of the school, though the entrances through the gymnasium have no steps, so one may park near them, too.

You may enter the building through both gymnasium entrances, the door on the east side of the school, the front door of school, or through the new entrance built on the west side. The eastern school entrance is the only one where a person would have to use stairs.

In other news, Fr. Hasenkamp, who preached last week for the Unbound organization, sent me an email in which he thanked me for the hospitality our parish gave to him and he informed me that St. Mark’s had a better than average number of people who signed on to sponsor a poor child in an impoverished nation. Father was thankful for our generosity.

You men may have noticed the spot in this bulletin which invited you to make a retreat at the White House Retreat Center. I encourage you to do so. As a person who experienced one of these retreats I assure that the time spent in the quiet and beauty of White House will not leave you disappointed. You will be embraced by God.

May God bless all of you. Father Hambrough

ATTENTION SOUP KITCHEN VOLUNTEERS— CHANGES DUE TO CHURCH MOVE:

Please note that mostaccioli containers for the August 13 only St. Peter/Paul Soup Kitchen are to still be picked up in the regular place in St. Martha’s Room the week before. You can pick them up from August 3 thru August 10, as the offices will still be there that week so the building will be open.

For Sunday, August 13, the mostaccioli and desserts are to be brought to the kitchen area in the cafeteria that is at the back of the new church. The kitchen will be open so you can leave the food items on a table. If you bring mostaccioli on Saturday, please put it in a refrigerator. There will be one with a sign that says “Soup Kitchen”. There will also be somebody there before 9:00 Mass and after (until around 10:00) to help guide where to put items this first time. Since the cafeteria is used by the school, weekends will be the only time we can use it for Soup Kitchen use. Any questions, please call Laurie at 602-5079 or Glenda at 372-5463. Thank you so much for your patience as we adjust to our new space.

We will not have Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesday, August 8 and 15.

Adoration will resume on August 22.

St. Mark Bible Study on Wednesday mornings on hiatus till August 23rd

Due to summer vacations, the impending move to the campus on Ripa at Union, and the beginning of School, the Bible Study group that regularly meets on Wednesday mornings has elected to go on summer hiatus until Wednesday, August 23rd. The group will reconvene on August 23rd in the new site of the Parish's Offices (located at 4200 Ripa Avenue / St. Louis, MO 63125).

Consider joining the group in its new location … join us as we study scripture as it is presented to us Sunday by Sunday. Learn more about the Bible as well as how it applies to our current day living … and be better prepared for the Sunday Mass readings. All are welcome! For more information contact Christina Sanders at 314-743-8604 or [email protected].

“Compassionate Connection” Ministry

Currently our bulletin identifies 112 folks who are listed on our “Sick Parishioners and Relatives” column. Perhaps this psalm reflects not only our sick but reaffirms our dependence: “You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in kindness and fidelity. Turn toward me, and have pity on me; give your strength to your servant.” (Psalm 86:15-16) Compassionate Connection is a new ministry as we move into our new location. Over a four week period we ask if 11 men and women would merely “telephone contact” our sick or homebound who are mentioned in our bulletin. A specific contact form is provided with just a few simple questions to be answered by the caregiver. No further conversation needs to take place. The form will be returned to Monsignor Hambrough. As we are familiar, Monsignor comments for any parish venture to succeed, please pray about the possibility that you are called to volunteer. If you are called to assist in this simple ministry; or if you are currently listed on the sick list choosing to complete the form without a telephone call from a volunteer; or if you are feeling better to remove your name: please leave your name and telephone number message for Diane Little at 314-743-8602 or [email protected]. Monsignor Hambrough is looking forward to the success of this ministry.

St. Mark School is seeking an After Care worker for the 2017-2018 School Year. Hours are 2:45 p.m.—6:00 p.m. each

scheduled school day. Please contact Ms. Burkett at (314) 743-8643 for more information.

RCIA - Our Journey in Faith

RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, at St. Mark Catholic Church is a Journey in Faith in which men and women become full members of the Catholic Church. (St. Mark Church also offers these classes for children past the age of 7 years who have not been previously baptized.) RCIA is a process in which we look at ourselves, tell our stories, and figure out how God and the Catholic Faith fits into our lives. We ask questions and we search for truth.

Have you been thinking about joining the Catholic Church?

Have you been Baptized but have not received First Holy Communion or been Confirmed?

If you answer “yes” to either of these questions, contact Christina Sanders, St.

Mark Pastoral Assistant, at 314.743.8604 or [email protected] for more

information about the RCIA Inquiry classes which will begin in September.
