Dusty vistas and men on horsebackare burned into the Americanimagination when it visualizes the
West. Local artists return to the well-wornmuse in the upcoming Oxide Gallery exhi-bition “Wild, Wild West.”
Cowboys make an appearance, as do thecrusty, red peaks of Colorado, Wyomingand Utah. But “Wild, Wild West” isn’tstrictly a love letter to the frontier — it’s amix of American Indian, Western andSouthwestern themes dreamed anddepicted by artists who live and workmostly in the city — or the rural-lightneighborhoods a short drive away from it.
Artist Paul Keithley reminds the viewerof the eternal preeminence of nature inApproaching Storm, a photograph thatcatches a timeless image — a bird watchinga hair’s-width bolt of lightning splitting thefar off slate sky while perching on the sideof a deteriorating wagon bed. Keithley’slens is contemporary — ringing with clari-ty and precision — but what we’re watch-ing is as old as the defiant North Texas soil.
Photographer Monte Borders returns tothe gallery with another of his intriguingphotographs. An old storefront sits all
alone in a scruffy patch of prairie. On theside of the aging brick building is a paintedbarn — or a photo of a barn, flanked bytrees. Borders uses unexpected colors —frosty looking leaves and a browning sky —to attract the viewer.
A gallery night reception begins 6 p.m.Tuesday at Oxide Gallery, 501 W. HickorySt., inside the Linwood-Alford Florist.
Gallery night is catered by Carino’sItalian Restaurant. Admission is free. Formore information, call 940-483-8900 orvisit www.oxidegallery.com.
The exhibition will run through Sept. 3.Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondaythrough Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.Saturday.

Everything old is new again. At least that’s the case with Monte Borders’ photo-
graph of an old but familiar storefront, which is decorated with a mural-like
image of a barn on the vacant side. The piece is in the upcoming show “Wild,
Wild West” at Oxide Gallery.

Pink to graceHailey’s stage
on MondaySeeing Ariel Pink’s Haunted
Graffiti in person is reasonenough to go to Hailey’s onMonday night.
Most of the prolific, freaky-folk frontman’s cult following isa result of recordings of theself-made basement variety. The 32-year-old Los Angelesnative’s lo-fi mash-up of ’80sinfluences wasn’t made for liveperformance, so previous liveshows were panned.
But his latest album, BeforeToday (which follows a long listof ultra-limited-edition cas-sette, CD-R and LP releases),was produced by the big-timelabel 4AD, and so this one hashigher, slicker production val-ues — perhaps a sign he’s readyto build a serious fan base.
Along with the new releasecomes a nationwide tour withTim Koh on bass and vocals,Kenny Gilmore on guitar andvocals, and Aaron Sperske ondrums and vocals — an effortthat took six purportedlypainful months to put together. This time the result should be,at the very least, interesting.
Ariel Pink’s a pioneer of agenre called chillwave — heavyon the processed electronicsand danceable with electro-pophooks. His tunes are catchy, and sharp ears can’t miss theunmistakable references to
musical styles from days not solong ago, but it’s not a smoothsail. Instead, it’s threaded witha somewhat unnerving under-lying tension and lyrics thatmight raise an eyebrow or two.
If you’re lucky, you might beable to nab the last copy of the12-inch EP entitled Ariel Pinkwith Added Pizzazz, the resultof a collaboration with theDallas-based avant-garde jazzgroup. If you miss out, no wor-ries: The first cut on BeforeToday, “Hot Body Rub,” wasrecorded with the Gonzalezfather-and-sons trio. Be on thelookout for the possibility of aguest appearance (wink, wink).
Live, you can count on Pinkto be his limp-haired, pretty-boy-girl-boy self, deliveringlyrics in flat, non-emotiveintensity while adding in hissignature mouth-made drumsounds. His shtick is definitelyout there, which has mademore than a few wonder: IsAriel Pink crazy or genius?Believers believe so.

Music prospectors apt to unearth sonic goldPeopleodian has a busy
weekend, and it startstoday at We Denton Do
It: No Bummer Summer, ashowcase at Dan’s Silverleaf. Then the band plays the BoilerRoom on Friday night.
Peopleodian is JamesWashington on electronics,Chris Bryan on drums and AllyHoffmann on vocals. Withhouse show experience under itsbelt, the trio makes the most ofHoffmann’s soft, easy sopranoand Washington’s clean sounds.Their music affects a dreamy, otherworldly posture. There’s alot of ascending, descending andplodding on Washington’s endof the stage. Occasionally, itsounds like he’s recorded “TheBells of St. Mary” played onchampagne flutes, fed into hiscomputer and reconstituted it asan alien world’s lullaby.
Sounds like: Bjork lent hersoft, girlish sighs to Hoffmannwithout the weird-for-weird-ness’-sake. Or P.J. Harveydecided to lighten up, both inmood and voice.
Details: Peopleodian joinsSlow Animal, Stunts and SexTape at Dan’s. Music starts at9:30 p.m. Cover is $5. The triojoins Babar, EPDAGR andDear Human at the BoilerRoom, 101 W. Hickory St.,Friday. Doors open at 7 p.m.;music starts at 10 p.m. Cover is$7 for ages 21 and older, $10 for20 and younger. All-ages show.
Dear Human, a Denton out-
fit represented by GutterthRecords, doesn’t need no stink-ing lyrics.
Drummer Casey Nalley, gui-tarists Dan Minshew and JohnGillespie, and bassist TylerWaguespack are in the businessof bringing out the baroque
capabilities of the guitar andbass. That’s not to say the groupspends all its energy addingguitar ornaments to its set, butthere is something more thanthe usual ambient buzz ofinstrumental upstarts. DearHuman begins with pretty linesthat can suddenly bang off indifferent directions, only toreunite before the last notes.Nalley sometimes plays theleader, nudging his band matesto leave a sophisticated solo forsome noisier fair. That said,Minshew and Gillespie willhave their say, creating a trillingbridge in the song, where avocalist would typically pull inthe reins.
Dear Human held court dur-ing the North by 35 MusicConferette during its set at theBoiler Room, and the boysappeared confident that they
could move their songs througha competent song list that real-ly seems to serve a more analyt-ical listener.
Sounds like: A jam sessionthat really is about the music, not about the testosterone or
atonal technical showboating. When Dear Human worksagainst a melody, it’s for a rea-son. In this group, the drum-mer seems to be an instrumen-talist, not a metronome.
Details: Doors open at 7
p.m. Friday, at the BoilerRoom, 101 W. Hickory St.Music starts at 10 p.m. Cover is$7 for ages 21 and older, $10 for20 and younger. All-ages show.
Denton’s Curvette bills itself
as a post-punk, classic rockoutfit — both labels that con-jure caterwauling guitars andshrieked vocals that dabble inscatology or Sticking It to theMan.
Neither category aptlydescribes the three-piece, really.Between Mike West, DaveAnderson and Alex Maples, there is rasping and wailing. Theguitar and drums are rough andscratchy. Song titles tug at theimagination — “NicaraguanCrab Sandwich” reads like adope-laced double entendre and“Meat Curds & Whey” elicitsimages of a greasy spoon entreegone way, way wrong.
Musically, though, theunsigned trio makes music thatgoes for a mood — sometimesmellow, other times irritable. The men on the strings do anintricate, mirror image sort oftangle that plays with thenotion of counterpoint. Then,on a dime, the guys start in on ajazz combo number thatmerges with the funky ramblesof a jam session.
Sounds like: Shellac took ayear off to dabble in jazz andimprovisation; Denton’s guitarvirtuoso Ryan Thomas Beckercouch surfed in the band’srehearsal studio and some ofhis genes mutated and wentairborne.
Details: Curvette playsHailey’s Club Aug. 7 withMonkeytown and CountDracula’s Weed-SmugglingJam Engine. Doors open 9 p.m.Cover is $6 for ages 21 andolder, $7 for 20 and younger.All-ages show. Hailey’s Club islocated at 122 W. Mulberry St.

Iranian indie rock band Hypernova is playing tonight at Rubber Gloves, 411 E. Sycamore
St. The band formed in Tehran, where there is a ban of all Western music on state-run
airwaves, and playing rock music is considered illegal. They rocked out in their base-
ments, taking their chances of being caught, which could’ve led to fines, arrest or flogging.
In 2007 they took a bigger chance: They were accepted to perform at South by Southwest,
but didn’t receive their visas in time, so they grabbed the opportunity and left for the U.S.
anyway. Now based in New York, Hypernova is on a U.S. tour promoting its debut album,
Through the Chaos, released in April on the Narnack Records label. Members of the band
are Raam as lead vocalist, Kodi as lead guitarist, Kami as drummer and Jam on bass. The
band has been featured on National Public Radio, CNN, Time and CBS News. Hypernova isn’t
just a rock band from Iran. It’s a solid group of musicians with something to say. The show
is open to all ages and admission is $7. The doors open at 8 p.m.

OPENING FRIDAY9500 Liberty () Documen-
tary filmmakers Eric Byler and
Annabel Park stumbled into the
middle of a heated immigration
debate, and an interesting subject
for their film, when they reached
Prince William County, Va. A repres-
sive, Arizona-like immigration law
had been proposed, setting two
sides of the community against
each other — immigrants, mostly
Latino, on one side, and the long-
tenured residents on the other.
Byler and Park stay until the final
votes are cast, documenting a frac-
tious playing out of the political
process. Not rated, 85 minutes. At
the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen

(Steve Carell) for his boss’ monthly
“dinner for idiots.” Rated PG-13, 110

The Dry Land (1/2) It’s an impor-
tant if frequently told side of the
Iraq war, that of veterans returning
home and struggling to rebuild their
lives again. In this case, James (Ryan
O’Nan) has the support of his wife
(America Ferrera) and mother
(Melissa Leo) in small-town Texas,
but few seem to understand his
emotional turmoil. The cast is
strong, and the script by director
Ryan Piers Williams generates some
powerful moments even if its
themes feel familiar. Rated R, 92
minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. —

Kisses () Very slight but
appealing working-class drama
from Ireland focuses on preteen
neighbors Kylie (Kelly O’Neill) and
Dylan (Shane Curry), feeling the
pressures of parents who range
from overbearing to abusive, who
decide together to run away for one
night in search of Dylan’s missing
older brother. Helped by his two
precocious newcomers in the lead
roles, director Lance Daly crafts a
fresh and gritty coming-of-age story
that’s uneven but charming. Not

Rec 2 (1/2) Blair Witch Project
Universal PicturesZac Efron and Charlie Tahan play brothers in the sappy Charlie St. Cloud.
Stuck in the surf
By Todd JorgensonFilm Critic
Among the ensemblefrom the High SchoolMusical franchise, Zac
Efron has always been the actorpoised to break through intomainstream stardom.
Besides his leading-manlooks and charm, Efron hasproven his depth and versatilityin films such as 17 Again andMe and Orson Welles.
So give Efron credit for againtrying something a little differ-ent with the title role in CharlieSt. Cloud, even if he can’t rescuethis waterlogged melodrama.
As the film opens, Efronplays an ace sailboat racer whoshares a mutual admirationwith his younger brother(Charlie Tahan). But whentragedy strikes their family, ithits Charlie especially hard,
causing him to give up hispromising sailing career andcollege scholarship and retreatto the life of a recluse.
Five years later, he’s workingas a caretaker at the local ceme-tery, still haunted by guilt andgrief, when a rival from his pastwinds up becoming the unlike-ly catalyst for Charlie movingon with his own life.
Despite some promisingtechnical credits, the film is letdown by its sappy and pre-dictable screenplay, which isbased on a novel by Ben Sher-wood. As an examination of thegrieving process, it’s trite andtrivial. And the story’s maintwist is telegraphed well inadvance.
Still, Charlie St. Cloud isdirected with confidence byBurr Steers (17 Again), whocombines with cinematograph-er Enrique Chediak (28 WeeksLater) on some visuals thatboth showcase the PacificNorthwest locales and makefor some exciting sailboatsequences.
Likewise, the acting is solid, with Efron balancing strengthand vulnerability in a part thatcould have resorted to merebrooding. The supporting castincludes Kim Basinger, RayLiotta and Donal Logue.
That makes it all the moredisappointing that the script ispreoccupied with manipulat-ing audience emotion andsqueezing every last bit of sen-timentality out of its thread-bare premise. A little more sub-tlety might have allowedCharlie St. Cloud to stay afloat.

meets Paranormal Activity in this
frantic, creepy Spanish-language
horror film. A group of SWAT team
members invades a building where
hostages are allegedly held. One
member thoughtfully brings his

redundant. Excellent midnight fare.

NOW PLAYINGDespicable Me () Crisply ani-

for his evil deeds, yet discovers it’s
easier to walk the straight and nar-
row when his heart is melted by
three little girls he adopts as part of
a sinister plan to steal the moon and
upstage an evil rival. The hip voice
cast and quirky periphery characters
are a plus, and while the film takes a
while to find its footing, there are
plenty of solid laughs to be had as

Inception (1/2) The latest mind-
bending thriller from visionary film-
maker Christopher Nolan (The Dark
Knight) is about Dom (Leonardo
DiCaprio), a man who specializes in
the illegal practice of extraction, or
stealing secrets from a person’s mind
while the victim is dreaming. In what
he hopes will be his last job, Dom
must implant an idea in the dream of
the heir to a corporation (Cillian
Murphy) rather than extract it. At
times, Inception threatens to col-
lapse under the weight of its own
ambition, but in a summer of sequels
and retreads, the level of inspiration
alone is praiseworthy. Terrific sup-
porting cast includes Marion
Cotillard, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-
Leavitt, Michael Caine and Tom
Berenger. Rated PG-13, 148 minutes.

The Last Airbender ()
Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan has
adapted a popular children’s anime
series with a dazzling array of special
effects. It’s up to a boy named Aang
(Noah Ringer) and his two sidekicks
to avenge the extinction of his king-
dom and bring peace to the world.
As with many of his previous films,
Shyamalan seems to take his subject
matter too seriously, and the screen-
play gets sidetracked with tedious
mumbo-jumbo. Rated PG, 103 min-

Ramona Quimby (Joey King) is a

Ramona’s vivid imagination and
boundless energy serve her well
when she and Beezus must help save
their family’s home. Rated G, 104
