Meditation The hand of the Lord feeds us; He answers all our needs.—cf. Psalm

145:16

God is always aware of what we need, and He desires to

provide for us in every way, both spiritually and physically. In

today’s Gospel reading, Jesus directs His disciples to feed a gathered

crowd of 5000. Although the disciples have no provisions for the

multitude, Andrew finds a small boy who is willing to share his five

barley loaves and two fish. Andrew doesn’t dismiss the boy’s

offering, but presents it to Jesus, Who blesses it and multiplies it.

The loaves and fishes miraculously feed all those who are gathered,

with enough left over to fill twelve baskets. Because of the

generosity of a child, the faith of a disciple, and the blessing of God, the crowd was fed that day long ago, as we too are fed and nourished

by the hand of the Lord, Who provides for us with His own Body

and Blood in the Eucharistic banquet.

St. John Paul II, in his 1982 Address to the Young People

of Scotland, reflects on how young people, like the little boy in the

Gospel, can make a difference by offering their own lives and gifts:

Saint Andrew gave Jesus all there was available, and Jesus

miraculously fed those five thousand people and still had something

left over. It is exactly the same with your lives. Left alone to face the

difficult challenges of life today, you feel conscious of your inadequacies and afraid of what the future may hold for you. But

what I say to you is this: place your lives in the hands of Jesus. He

will accept you and bless you, and He will make such use of your

lives as will be beyond your greatest expectations! In other words:

surrender yourselves, like so many loaves and fishes, into the

all-powerful, sustaining hands of God, and you will find yourselves

transformed with “newness of life,” with “fullness of life.”

What do you have to offer to Jesus today? Whatever it is –

the child’s loaves and fishes, the widow’s last few pennies, or your

own prayers, works, joys and sufferings - give it generously, without counting the cost, and trust Jesus to multiply your humble gift

beyond all imagining.

Quinceañera A quinceañera is a joyous celebration of a

young woman — a "quinceañera" —

reaching the age of 15. The celebration is a way of acknowledging that

the young woman has reached maturity and is

ready to take on additional responsibilities.

Most importantly, the celebration reaffirms her religious faith and

the traditional virtues of the Catholic family.

In order to celebrate a quinceañera at St. Joseph Church, the

following requirements must be met:

• The quinceañera must have received the Sacraments of

Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.) If she has not received the Sacrament of Confirmation, she must

register for the classes at the Parish Office by August 24, 2018.

• Please present a copy of her First Communion certificate

before the celebration.

• The quinceañera and her family must actively participate in the

parish and attend Sunday Mass regularly.

• As part of the formation, the young girl is required to attend

Youth Group for a whole school year, beginning in September.

• The young girl must attend preparation classes. The first

session is September 4, 11, 18, 25. Please stop by the Parish

Office to purchase the book ($15) and to register.

• The young girl will also need to attend a youth retreat.

• The young girl will need to complete 15 hours of community

service activities before the celebration.

Scheduling can be done in the Parish Office on August 1, 2018, by

making a deposit of $100.00; scheduling will be on a first come,

first served basis. All Masses are the fourth Saturday of the month

at 11:00 am or 1:00 pm.

Dembi Dollo Girls’ Hostel Update: From Sr. Evelyn and Sr. Algonesh in Ethiopia:

Thanks to all the parishoners at St. Joseph for

helping to start the fund to build a new girls’

hostel for Dembi Dollo. The construction is

moving along very nicely. So far, the Kitchen,

Dining Room, Study Area, and Administrative

Offices have been completed. There will be two dormitories for the

girls. One dormitory is nearing completion and the second one will

be started soon. The new dormitories are being made out of cement

blocks and the window and doors are all constructed from alumi-

num. As a consequence, the buildings should last many, many years with minimum maintenance. Thank you!
