Plan the decoration of your baby’s room well ahead of his or her arrival. It’s much better if the painting and wallpapering is finished at least a month ahead of the birth. Favour calm and comforting colours, such as pale blue, tender green, tortoiseshell or old rose, to allow baby to sleep well.
On the other hand, you can add some elements which will help to develop baby’s senses. As the ceiling and the top of the walls are the parts of the room which the baby sees when in bed, you could integrate geometrical forms in contrasting colours. You could install a wallpaper border with a colourful fresco and some mobiles over the crib. Linoleum is a good choice of floor covering as it is warm and easily cared for.
When you’re choosing furniture for your baby, keep in mind that it probably won’t
be useful for very long, unless you opt for something more adaptable which the child can use over a longer period of time. What’s important is to create a cosy and comfortable place for your baby to sleep peacefully.
If the choice of furniture is made primarily according to your tastes, the crib and the mattress should always be chosen to ensure the safety and comfort of the baby. Choose a stable crib with a good solid flat bottom, drop sides at least 20 cm above the mattress support when lowered, headboards and footboards at least 60 cm high and slats with spacing of between 4.5 and 6.5 cm. Choose a very firm mattress, well adjusted to the size of the crib. When choosing a changing table, think about getting a model big and functional enough that you’ll have everything close to hand and will never have to leave baby alone on the table.

Who said that the kitchen was the no man’s land of the house? This is certainly wrong, particularly now that the kitchen is regaining its place as the heart of a home. It’s especially true since the central island became such a popular item; as practical as it is user-friendly.
Positioned in the heart of the kitchen, the central island brings warmth and beauty to large rooms and an unhoped-for practicality to smaller rooms. A central island is the perfect item to make the most of the kitchen; a focal point around which family and friends can gather.
As far as lay-out is concerned, the island modifies the kitchen’s volume and creates an imaginary separation. What’s more, it can become multifunctional depending on your habits and your mood. It is, therefore,
possible to integrate into the countertop, a sink and a cooktop. However, before choosing any of these options, the available space must be ascertained, as it is impossible to create a central island in a kitchen which has a surface area inferior to 15-20 m2 (160-215 ft2). The reason for this is simple: a space of at least 60 cm (24 in) must be planned on either side of the island to allow adequate room for circulation and up to 120 cm (48 in) of associated space when a dishwasher is incorporated. If a cooking space is planned, it’s recommended to allow 40 cm (15 in) on each side of the cooktop for the removal of hot cooking pots. Once this is said, if the island is used exclusively as a storage unit, 80 cm (30 in) is ample space for good circulation.

As for decorating, it is preferable if the central island blends in with the kitchen cabinets... although if the island is made from some of the newer materials, such as satin lacquer, this nerve centre can adapt to all interior styles, including the most futuristic.
