EXPLORING THE SHROUD OF TURIN: Thursday, August 1st at 6:00pm at Our Lady of the Mountains, Father Peter Mangum and Cheryl White, PH.D. will lead a presentation on the Shroud of Turin. “The Shroud of Turin is an artifact that millions around the world believe is the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. It's more than 14 feet long and 3.5 feet wide & on it, the depiction of a man with a beard & shoulder length hair. Rigorous testing over the years on the original Shroud of Turin has shown these marks were made by blood, sweat & tears. Dr. White states, “The image that is on this cloth is not an artwork, it is not a painting. There are no pigments, no dyes, no process of any kind that we can understand that would have produced it. The closest that we know today has come out of the field of nuclear physics. They tell us there was an incredible burst of radiation that cannot be reproduced in any laboratory in the world.”
A CALL FOR DONATIONS OF ROSARIES BY THE BENEDICTINE SISTERS: The Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration is the order of sisters that once lived in Wyoming’s Benedictine Monastery in Dayton. The sisters also built a beautiful monastery in Tucson around 1940, where
many lived until very recently when the monastery was sold. All the sisters have gone home to their mother house in Clyde, Missouri. The order of nuns is declining in numbers, but there are still active groups of Benedictine Oblates (lay women & men affiliated with the monastery) throughout Wyoming and Arizona. Right now, the Tucson monastery—through the generosity of the developer who bought the property, & with the blessing of the sisters—is being used as temporary shelter for asylum seekers who have fled to the U.S. from Central America. These are legal migrants who have sponsors in this country. At the monastery, they stay only one to three days & are given food & water, medical attention, clothing, & are assisted with transportation arrangements. The operation, which has served about 10,000 refugees since January, is run by Catholic Social Services through the volunteer efforts & donations of Tucsonans. The donated rosaries seem to provide incredible solace to these very poor and traumatized people. If you would like to donate, there is a blue box on the table in the vestibule.
