    Ravingsby Mike Hickey

    "FUNNY!!"

Every now and then I stumble upon somethin

that I think is so funny that I need to share

    around.

"It seems a Spanish teacher was explaining to her class that i

Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine o

feminine. House, for instance, is feminine: la casa; pencil, howeveis masculine: el lapiz.

A student asked, "What gender is computer?"

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into tw

groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselve

whether computer should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Eac

group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.

The men's group decided that computer should definitely be of th

    feminine gender (la computadora), because:

    1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;

    2. The native language they use to communicate with othe

    computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;

    3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory fo

possible later retrieval; and4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourse

spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

The women's group, however, concluded that computers should b

    masculine (el computador), because:

    1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;

    2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;

    3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the tim

    they ARE the problem; and

    4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited

little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

    -- The women won."

My own ideas of women and computers is more like "Older modecan be great value but many are prone to going into "sleep mode

unexpectedly. While rebooting them sometimes cures the problem

they tend to get cranky. When not in sleep mode, older mode

frequently emit an annoying whine. Computers and wome

instinctively know if there is a man trying to control them and wi

never do what they are supposed to."

In one major way women and computers are not alike whatsoeve

Feeding women seems to work wonders for their dispositions, bu

feeding a hamburger into the CDROM tray is just plain messy!!

SUSSEX SHARING CLUBSurveillance cameras installed - after muchdeliberation, by the Board of Directors of theSussex Sharing Club, it was decided to installsurveil lance cameras. To protect theprivacy/confidentiality of our clients/customersthese cameras will notbe in operation on the days

that we are open. For the past decade we have appealed to the public not to drop off

clothes or other items that are only fit for the dump. Global TV did anews items, which was run several times showing some of the furniture

left on our deck (which was torn, broken or missing pieces). There werealso articles in newspapers and on the radio. Many incidents of peopleremoving items from the deck, ripping open bags/boxes and thendiscarding the items either on the deck or parking lot. We also hadreports of people putting their garbage in our garbage bins. Since Jan

th2005 until June 30 , 2010 it has cost us $11,771.18 in garbage fees.

Some RCMP officers have graciously given suggestions as to whatsteps to take when something inappropriate shows up on the screen.Any action has to be taken by us and they are willing to assist, as far asthe law allows. The cameras have already recorded the removal ofitems, which will be addressed by the Board at the next meeting inSeptember.Any person(s) in need of clothing, mattress, or other items, may speak

to Kelly Craig, our administrator, for help. All items will be given, freeof charge, to anyone in need. We are quite willing and ready to do this.We encourage people to contact us rather than steal the item(s). Whenwe are closed Kelly can be contacted by leaving a message on ourmachine at 433-6047 and she will get back to you. These messages areusually retrieved daily. Kelly can also be reached at her home at 432-4819.

We appreciate greatly those who donate clean clothes and items thatare unbroken and complete. Thank you. 324

Your retirement is about morethan numbers.

    Tax-Free Savings Account

For short-term and long-term goals, consider a Tax-Free Savings Account

Everyone has different reasons for saving and investing. But no matter what your goals are,you may be able to realize them sooner with a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). Thisregistered account is unlike anything Canadian investors have seen before. Investmentreturns in the account whether interest, dividends or capital gains are not taxed, even

when withdrawn. A TFSA has the potential to help you reach your goals sooner.

TFSA benefits:The TFSA has a number of special features that make it useful in a wide range of situations. These include:SFlexibility. You can make withdrawals whenever you want, for any purpose. Withdrawals

are added to unused contribution room starting the following year. Unused contributionroom is carried forward indefinitely, so you can re-contribute whenever you have themoney.SInvestment choice. You can hold a wide range of investments in your account.SNo income requirement. You dont need to have earned income in order to make a

contribution.SVersatility. A TFSA could be appropriate for both your short-term and long-term

investment goals.STax-free. Unlike other tax-deferred plans, earnings in a TFSA are never subject to

Canadian tax. You dont pay taxes even if you withdraw.

SLifelong eligibility. Theres no requirement to collapse your account at a set age. You cankeep it as long as you live. This makes it especially valuable as part of a long-termstrategy that also includes RSPs/RIFs.

The TFSA lets you create a flexible, tax-sheltered savings fund you can use for a variety ofpurposes. You can use it for short-term goals, such as a new car, a dream vacation or even anew home. But you can also use it in addition to your registered Retirement Savings Plan(RSP) to help you reach long-term goals, such as providing funds for your retirement. Howyou use a TFSA and the benefits it can provide will vary depending on your individualsituation and investment goals. How you use your Tax-Free Savings Account depends onyour own personal needs and goals. Please give me a call to discuss how the TFSA maybenefit you.

Please consult your advisor and read the prospectus before investing. There may be commissionstrailing commissions, management fees and expenses associated with mutual fund investments.Mutual funds are not guaranteed, their values change frequently and past performance may not berepeated. I volunteer because I enjoy helping ideagrow to benefit others, Vanessa says. I gegreat pleasure putting the tools andresources into the hands of talented andcommitted people.

Sometimes the smallest acts can have thgreatest rewards, resulting in a greatequality of life for others.

It is a relationship that began shortly afteshe graduated from high school, a time whenshe was inspired by some wonderful rolmodels and a desire to try new things. Whastuck with me was how small acts and one

person with the right approach can make areal difference, Vanessa recalls. There inothing like working alongside someonewho shares your passion. Besides, it's a lot ofun! Some people golf or play cards, volunteer. And its a relationship that isnlikely to end anytime soon. We work tomake a living; you volunteer to make a life, she says. When you can put an eagle back inthe sky, or help someone discover a talenthey didn't know they have, you're talkingriches way beyond a pay cheque.

There's not a bank vault big enough to holdthat kind of wealth.

We are looking for stories about peoplmaking a difference in the Sussex area people who donate money and work hard tokeep churches and local organizationoperating, people who provide time andleadership to programs that serve youth people who organize and contribute fundraising activities that support worthcauses and those in need in our community If you know a story about a communitSuper Hero we want to hear from youCall 832-5613 or email [email protected].

Small Acts Reap Huge Rewards forCommunity Volunteer

    by Trudy Kelly Forsythe

Like many who volunteer, Vanessa Packmanis modest about all she does for hercommunity.

I'm simply having fun, and am pleased tohelp others while I am, says Vanessa, whosevolunteering experience over the years readslike a Whos Who of local events and goodcauses.

Theres the Kings County Covered BridgeFestival, the Kings County TourismAssociation, Theatre New Brunswick, theAgricultural Museum of New Brunswick, theSussex Canada Day committee, the Sussex

Valley Volunteer Association, CountryLiving Days, the Atlantic Balloon Fiesta andthe Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.

More recently shes excited about projectslike the Rural Action and Ideas Network, aloose network of rural residents in southernNew Brunswick sharing ideas and resourcesthat promote the regions quality of life;Celebrate Sussex, which is billed theunofficial cultural office of southern NewBrunswick; Sussex Literary Initiatives andCultural Events, a collection of community-minded individuals working to bring a buffetof creative offerings to the area; and the

Sussex Area Community Foundation, whereshe puts her talents as a professionalcommunicator to use as a volunteer on thepublic relations committee.

In 2004, she created Needlework NewBrunswick, a resource for New Brunswickand Atlantic Canadian fibre artists to raise theprofile and provide information for theprovince's needle artists. And, she supports avariety of other groups and causes when shecan.

Vanessa describes volunteering as anaddictive combination of trying new thingsand working with others. There's realmagic in bringing together skills andenergy to make something happen.

Her volunteer work as founder and co-ordinator of the Kibble Pet Food BankNetwork, the first food bank network forcompanion animals and livestock in

Atlantic Canada, is a good example ofmaking something happen. An outreachproject of the NBSPCA, the network hasgrown to six outlets since it started inSussex in October 2008. The first outlet, inpartnership with the Sussex Sharing Club, helped 12 animals in its first month. Sincethen it has grown to help 250 animalsaround the province each month. In 2009,the network helped 1,135 animals and it ison target to more than double that numberthis year.

Credit card fraud can happen several ways. Your card could

be lost or stolen and used to purchase goods and services.

A criminal could obtain your card number and expiry date

and use this information to manufacture a counterfeit card,

or you could inadvertently provide your card number and

expiry date to a criminal over the phone or Internet.

WHAT IS THE ASSOCIATION FOR COMMUNITLIVING?We need community to survive. When we are born, we are unable ttake care of ourselves. At first, we need other people to take care oour needs. Not just our physical needs, but intellectual anemotional as well. We also need community in order to growWithout the love, laughter, and shared experiences that communitprovides, we would probably not be able to make it our ownCommunity provides dialogue, supports us in our growth, and helpus to become authentic humans. Community challenges us to grostronger and enriches our experience.

As we grow, our community grows as well. In the beginning, ouguardians, relatives, and close friends make up our wholcommunity. But over time, our community grows to include newfriends, teachers, and the people we interact with from day to dayThe more we interact with people of different ages, abilitiecultures, and beliefs, the richer our experience becomes. We learn tsee things from different points of view, and grow in ouunderstanding of our world and of ourselves. A "LivinCommunity" is one that is includes and supports diversity, and sencourages growth.

The Association for Community Living is an organization that rooted in providing a "Living Community" for families that havemember with an intellectual disability. We aim to strengthen bond

of parents, teachers, and community groups, and to share resourceand experiences. We try to provide support and advocacy for thrights of the members of the community that might otherwise finthemselves disenfranchised. We lend a voice to those who canspeak up for themselves, throughout the whole of their lives, such athough fostering inclusive education, and by helping them make thtransition into adulthood, the workforce, and adult relationships.

We are a network that exists on several levels, from local tinternational. Help us grow a "Living Community." Contacts us tsee how you can help. Let us be stronger together. Contact the ACat 652-1544. 826
