From the

Pastor’s

Desk:

A certain king was to visit a village under his rule and the villagers decided to contribute, each man a jar of wine, for the royal feast. All the wine was to be poured into a big barrel from which it would be served. One man thought to himself: With all the men in the village each pouring a jar of wine into the barrel, what difference would it make if I poured in a jar of water and save my wine. A jar of water among so much wine would hardly make any difference. Unfortunately, he was not the only man in the village who thought that way. When the king arrived and the barrel of wine was ready to be served, it was discovered to be full of water and very little wine. Many other men in the village too had contributed water instead of wine, thinking that it did not matter, since

other people's contributions would make up for their not contributing.

Some time back when I read this story I laughed a while. As it is the case with every moral story, after a while the truth of the story dawned on me. Whenever there is a common need and we are requested to help out, we all agree that we all should help out. And the needed amount seems well within our limit. But when the time comes for us to make the contribution, suddenly there arises in our heart some kind of unwillingness. Then we begin to rationalize and justify our sudden lack of interest with so many reasons such as – Oh, I just recently came to America, my neighbor is earning more than me, there are so many rich people in my parish, I am an unregistered member of this parish, I am undocumented etc. But can we wait to repair the Bell Tower till everybody gets equal salary? Can we stop repairing our restroom till we all get a more expensive car? Can we

stop paying to our employees till our other concerns are settled?

People like me who have come from countries where we are used to get money from well to do countries to repair and to maintain the facilities still think that the church can get money from well to do country to maintain its facilities. Fortunately God has brought us to the most well to do county. While the environment has changed, unfortunately our mentality has not changed. When I worship in this beautiful church, I gratefully think of the people who donated from their income to build this beautiful church and to maintain its facilities. God has brought me to this wonderful land. Now it is my duty to contribute to maintain and to preserve this church and all its facilities without looking for excuses not to contribute. It is in giving for the common good our true character comes out.

diferencia. Desafortunadamente, él no

nuestras posibilidades. Pero cuando llega

el momento para hacer la contribución,

de repente surge en nuestro corazón una

especie de falta de voluntad. Entonces

comenzamos a racionalizar y justificar

nuestra repentina falta de interés por

muchas razones tales como: Oh,

recientemente llegue a Estados Unidos,

instalaciones. Dios me ha traído a esta

tierra maravillosa. Ahora es mi deber

contribuir para mantener y preservar esta

Iglesia y todas sus instalaciones sin

buscar excusas para no contribuir. Es dar

por el bien común cuando sale nuestro

verdadero carácter.

Vatican Corner Earlier this year, Pope Francis outlined a 10 point plan for happiness when he was interviewed by an old acquaintance from an Argentine magazine. Here is a list of his 10 steps for a happy, healthy life.

1) "Live and let live" The first step to peace and happiness, said Francis, is following that ancient advice of the Romans. To put it another way: Who am I to judge?"

2) "Be giving of yourself to others" Francis, says to live charitably toward all and place special emphasis on the poor. Charity includes giving one's time to someone who needs it. Francis advises against withdrawing into oneself, since that runs the risk of stagnation and "stagnant water is the first to be corrupted."

3) "Move quietly" Pope Francis says to be more like the older protagonist in the novel Don Segundo Sombra, moving calmly and slowly through life. The theme of stillness is an aspect of Ignatian spirituality, which Francis, as

a Jesuit, has been trained in.

4) “Have a healthy sense of leisure” It's hard to make time to play, and to enjoy art and literature, but "it must be done, people who work must take the time to relax, to be with their families, to enjoy themselves, read, listen to music, play a sport."

5) "Sunday is for family" Francis said that once a week, people should take a break from their work lives to spend time with their families. It is actually one of the 10 Commandments.

6) “Find ways to make jobs for young people” Pope Francis noted that the rate of drug use and suicide is high among unemployed people under 25. That crisis, he said, requires us to be creative with helping them find work. Jobs don't only give a person money, they give dignity.

7) ”Respect nature” Francis asked "Isn't humanity committing suicide with this indiscriminate and tyrannical use of nature?"

8) "Letting go of negative things quickly is healthy" " Instead of talking about others who frustrate us, Francis advises that it's healthy to let negative things pass quickly and quietly.

9 “Stop proselytizing” Cool the aggressive conversion tactics. “We shouldn't talk with others with the sole goal of persuading them that we're right. Each person, he said, sees the world in his or her own way, and that should be respected. Besides, ultimately people will join the Catholic Church if they are attracted to it, not if they are argued into it.

10) “Work for peace” Stop the violence. Francis said that working for peace must be proactive, and never quiet: "Peace is the language we must speak." Source: Vox.com

Everyday Stewardship

For many years Alberta Hairston was the Catholic campus minister at North Carolina A&T University and Bennett College, both traditionally black institutions. She operated out of a house named for Sr. Thea Bowman, a great Afri-can-American sister and evangelist who helped found the Black Catholic Sisters Conference. It was a small house on one of the campuses but was open to all stu-dents, Catholic and non-Catholic. When Momma H, as she was called, started in the ministry, she had no advanced degree but she had experience help-ing the previous campus minister. Also, she had a great love of the Lord and his people. She also had a tremendously powerful tool of evangelization: the kitchen.

Alberta knew that if she could have a chance to feed their bellies, she could then begin to feed their souls. Of course, she could never be certain how many students might show up at a meal. But that did not matter, because somehow there was always enough. Did she perform miracles, like Jesus feeding the five thousand? Well, a tray of corn bread never instantly became three trays of corn bread! But she did have one of the same key characteristics as Jesus: love. You see, there was always enough food for everyone because Momma H wasn't just feeding college students with corn bread, chicken, and mac and cheese; she was feeding them with love.

Love changes everything. It can lead to a lost soul feeling like it belongs. It can help a blind person see the truth. Love is the root of true hospitality, and both Jesus and Momma H have that. There are people all throughout our lives who feel like there is not enough in this life for them. But with our actions of love, they miracu-lously are filled with what they need. Of course, a tray of good corn bread doesn't hurt either. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS © Liturgical Publications Inc
