2 30TH FILBERG FESTIVAL 2012

Say ‘T hanks’ to a VolunteerVolunteers are the backbone

of the Filberg Festival; it couldn’t be done without them. They take time out of their summer plans and devote themselves to ensuring the Festival is the success that it is.

Festival artisans and entertainers often acknowledge the enthusiastic attitude of our Volunteers and the fun they seem to have doing all the

work that makes the Festival a unique and special experience for so many.

So while you’re at the Festival consider smiling and saying thanks to a Volunteer for doing such a great job. You’ll encounter them as greeters, information and ticket booth staff, parking control support, and in many other important roles. Much of their work

happens before the Festival and behind the scenes.

To all of our Volunteers who work so tirelessly, we extend our gratitude for your efforts, your dedication and commitment. We appreciate your teamwork, sense of community and the contribution you make to the lasting legacy of the Filberg Festival. You are indispensible!

Welcome to the 30th Filberg Festival on behalf of the members and the Board of Directors of the Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park Association. Thank you for coming and celebrating 30 years of the Festival with us.

We hope that you enjoy this truly unique event event, celebrating arts and crafts and music in this spectacular east coast of Vancouver Island setting. The Filberg Park, its wonderful gardens, and the Lodge with a backdrop of the Beaufort

Mountains and Comox Harbour, creates a spectacular setting for this outdoor show.

A sincere thank you to Susan Lewis, Festival Producer, Bobbie Blue, Music Director and our staff for their dedication and tireless efforts. Thank you to our sponsors and partners, this community, and more than 300 volunteers for your energy and support. It makes the Festival possible.

Thirty years is a milestone for any festival and one that should defi nitely be celebrated! The Filberg Festival started back in 1983 by a group made up of town councilors and a small group of citizens from the Town of Comox: Mayor George Piercy, Alderman Alice Bullen, Alderman Rick Kellow, Vern Benediction, Robert McPhee, Lt. Colonel Al Kilpatrick, Jean Bossom, Ken Whitley, Duke Warren, Dorothy Yeoman, Clare Ensom, Kate Munson, Dorothy Taylor, Liz Stubbs, Patti Stubbs and Jane Howard. Ten years later in 1993, Sylvia Allan assumed the role as Festival Producer and grew the Festival to the success it is today. In 2011, my company, Lewis & Sears marketing & event management, took over the production of the Festival and it certainly has been an enjoyable two years getting to know the Festival and everyone involved with it.

If you have not been to the Filberg Festival in a few years, we invite you come back and experience the Festival once again. This year over 25% of the artisans are new to the Festival so we are excited to see what they have for us. To mark this milestone anniversary we will be giving out Filberg Festival shopping bags to the fi rst 300 people through the gate each day, serving 300 cupcakes at 3:00pm outside the Lodge and the Lodge will be open for tours throughout the Festival. Guest artist Mary Fox will have her “outdoor” showroom of beautiful pottery in the arbour in the upper garden. And of course, Bobbie Blue, our Entertainment Director has a great line-up of Canadian musicians for all to enjoy.

Another change for the 2012 Festival is the new hours. Friday – Sunday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Monday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Hope to see you at the festival!

From silk scarves to handmade soaps, visitors to the Filberg Heritage Lodge now have the opportunity to take a memory home with them while supporting the association.

The Filberg Lodge Gift Shop opened it’s doors to the public prior to Mother’s Day a year ago, and is located on the second fl oor of the rustic, former home of R.J. (Bob) Filberg.

“This is really a viable option for the Filberg Lodge to enhance the visitors’ experience,” said board member Val Graham. “We’re on a two-year trial period, but it’s going very well; we’re getting lots of positive response.”

The shop, open Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holiday Mondays, offers a variety of items including collectibles, vintage jewelry, cup and saucer sets, locally-made wool and more.

“We have Floating Stone Enterprise silk scarves and purses from Cambodia, and Waterslip Soap Works soap made in Courtenay,” added Graham.

The store is entirely staffed by volunteers, and funds raised are turned over to the board for maintenance of the lodge and buildings in

the park, explained Graham. She noted it is important for items to fi t in with

the overall theme and ‘feel’ of the lodge, and many people are pleased to discover items that remind them of family.

“The cups and saucers remind a lot of people of grandma’s tea set,” said Graham.

Many items are donated to the store, and Graham adds the shop is always looking for donations of gently used jewelry, pottery, and other items.

“It’s great fun to see what sort of things come in,” she noted.

The store is hoping to remain open into the fall, co-ordinating it’s schedule with the Tea House. They are planning to be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the Filberg Festival, and hope to re-open during the Christmas season offering vintage decorations and gifts.

For more information about the Filberg Lodge and Gift Shop, visit www.fi lberg.com, or to make a donation to the Gift Shop, call Val at 250-339-7659.

30TH FILBERG FESTIVAL 2012 5

The Filberg Festival, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, began after an appeal to Comox Valley service clubs.

As recalled by then-Comox alderman Alice Bullen, she wrote a letter more than 30 years ago to all Comox Valley service clubs, inviting them to submit a brief.

The service clubs were asked for suggested uses of Filberg Park if it became a public facility. Fourteen briefs were submitted — many suggesting an art show, craft festival or gardening show. These briefs were forwarded to the Vancouver Foundation, which at the time was responsible for the park as a condition of Robert Filberg’s will.

Filberg, who lived in the park’s lodge with his wife Florence, had died in March 1977, willing the nine-acre waterfront property to the Vancouver Foundation.

He also gave $11 million to the Vancouver Foundation. Interest annually on this money created the Robert and Florence Filberg Fund

and the Robert Filberg General Fund. At Bullen’s urging, she and Mayor Richard Merrick visited Vancouver Foundation chairman Peter Kaye and executive director Dr. David McGann. Kaye and McGann subsequently walked the Comox property.

The Vancouver Foundation engaged the fi rm of Ladner Downs to prepare terms and conditions whereby the Town of Comox would receive grants from the Robert and Florence Filberg Fund to purchase and restore the property.

Comox council passed a motion by Bullen to assume responsibility for the property, which happened Jan. 19, 1979. The non-profi t Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park Association manages the buildings and grounds on behalf of the Town.

Bente Rheim, well-recognized for her

presentation of craft fairs at the Empress Hotel in Victoria, was invited to the Comox Valley, Bullen recalls. Rheim met members of Comox council’s special events committee regarding putting together a craft fair.

A four-day arts and crafts fair was held in 1983, the fi rst of what would become the annual Filberg Festival, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The festival grew to become the largest outdoor juried arts festival in Western Canada with more than 120 artisans.

Internationally known potter and painter Wayne Ngan of Hornby Island was the fi rst guest artist. Besides Ngan, the 1983 festival featured juried artists, entertainment, and food concessions.

Kate Munson and Dorothy Yeoman became festival co-ordinators. They worked 95 hours

each on the fi rst festival, Bullen remembers. Four summer students were paid for by a federal grant.

Patty Stubbs became the chairman of the special events committee when Yeoman became festival co-ordinator.

Jane Howard became festival co-ordinator in the early years, taking the event “from a small-town festival to a provincial success,” says Bullen. “Her recommendation saw paid entertainment and an increase in entrance fees.”

Sylvia Allan was the co-ordinator (producer) for almost a quarter of a century.

“Her hard work, vision and creativity have made this festival an international success,” Bullen states. “And always, always, always, the contribution of volunteers makes every festival a success.”

In January 2011, Susan Lewis replaced Allan as the festival producer, inheriting entertainment Bobbie Blue, who augments the artisans with musicians and children’s entertainers.

The Filberg Festival, which celebrates 30 years of excellence in Canadian arts & crafts in 2012, serves as the major source of income for the Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park Association. This allows FHLPA to accomplish its goals and objectives of maintaining the heritage park and buildings throughout the year.

In 2012 the Filberg Festival took the artisans submissions online. Applications were accepted until early February 2012. Jurying took place in February and all applicants were contacted late March 2012 on the status of their submissions. The online process was well received by many of the artisans and in fact received 20% more applications in 2012 over 2011. The Festival is thrilled by the quality of the artisans and that interest to participate continues to grow.

THE JURY PROCESSThe Festival uses an anonymous jury process, meaning that jury members do not know the name of the artist submitting work for consideration. All works are judged for quality, originality and overall craftsmanship. Consideration is also given to the overall balance of craft categories at the Festival, and in some categories limits are set. Competition varies within categories, with jewellery being the most competitive. There are no guaranteed spots year to year, and the mix of artisans changes annually. The Filberg Festival attracts artisans from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, North West Territories, and the Yukon.

The jury is made up of 10 people who are experts in ceramics, glass, jewellery, soaps & lotions, textiles, wood and visual arts.

THE CRITERIA FOR SUBMITTING TO THE FESTIVAL ARE: • Must be the designer, creator or

producer of the art or craft• Must be a Canadian citizen or landed

immigrant• Craft must be produced in Canada

within the last year and not previously submitted

The Filberg Festival brings you the best of the very best in the country – making the Festival a shopper’s dream!

Rhythms Artglasswww.rhythmsartglass.caMeaningful, hand-blown art glass by Claude Duperron and Linda Westrom. One of the things that makes our work unique is that we make our own glass, right from sand. We use various metallic oxides to colour the glass batch so the material we work with has a beautiful rich colour and interesting properties. Linda develops the imagery using small chips of colored glasses called frit. A painter will often put a painting upside down and far away to see if it is balanced; she does her patterning and pontil-drawing upside down and at a distance.

Samphire Glasswww.samphireglass.ca“Glass is my chosen medium to express and explore my interests in making art. It’s the resolution of interrelated aesthetic and technical concerns that makes glass an exciting and challenging medium in which to work. The particular manipulation through blowing glass allows me to express unique ideas and concerns that continue to evolve.”

All the Time in the Worldwww.allthetimeintheworld.caOur unique jewelry is handcrafted from fallen arbutus branches which have fallen naturally. After harvesting the branches from the forest fl oor, we cut them into discs and sand them until they are smooth outside our woodshop, overlooking the ocean. Each nature inspired design is then carved individually and free-hand on a scroll saw, making each one an original piece of art. A water-based satin varnish is applied and the jewelry completed with the various fi nishings. The arbutus, or pacifi c madrone, is a tree unique to the pacifi c northwest, defi ning the westcoast with its stunning and rugged beauty.

Amy Newsom Designwww.amynewsomdesign.caAll processes in my jewellery production start with raw materials of a precious nature. I am a seasoned metallurgist and create all of my own sheet, wire and casting grain stock. It is from this stock that my jewellery is made. I prepare the original mould, which involves carving shapes in wax, casting it and then molding it. Chains are customized with quality fi ndings and custom tag, all fabricated in my shop. Other products such as my sterling silver earrings, bangles and rings are produced by a fabrication process. Every piece is forged by hand to create an authentic product.

Anat Designswww.anatbasantajewellery.comI am fond of using familiar ornamented “retro” patterns, almost kitschy wallpaper like designs, which typically appear in fabrics, ribbons and laces. I use these textured patterns alongside woven silver to capture the softness, fl uidity, and airy nature of knitted textiles. Synthesizing metal work techniques with those typically used in textiles, I blur the boundaries between the two mediums. I tend to work with simple forms, and strive to reach the meeting point of beauty and intrigue.

30TH FILBERG FESTIVAL 2012 17

2012Invited Guest ArtistInvited Guest Artist

Each year the Filberg Festival invites an accomplished Guest Artist to showcase their work at the festival. This year the invited Guest Artisan is MARY FOX, a celebrated potter, from Ladysmith, on Vancouver Island, who creates wonderful and amazing sculptures, forms and vessels. The quality of the work featured is exceptional.

Born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Mary moved with her family to BC as a young child. At the age of thirteen, she enrolled in a ceramics course at her school, because all of the other courses were full, and soon she was spending all of her free time potting. By the age of nineteen Mary was supporting herself by

producing functional stoneware.Mary has worked solely as a potter

since 1979, and has yet to grow tired of any aspect of her job. She goes out to her studio every day full of energy and the inspiration to create. Although Mary enjoys creating work for people to use; mugs, bowls, jugs, casseroles, in a variety of colours, the majority of her work is designed with contemplation in mind. Beautiful form, exquisite balance, and a sense of contained energy and movement are the hallmarks of her work. Over the past two decades, Mary has been focused on expressing the beauty and the strength of pure form. She delights in the challenge of creating contemporary vessels based on classic

lines, and she has a keen interest in developing original glaze effects for her many works of art.

Mary’s work is exhibited nationally and internationally, and she especially enjoys the time that she spends with customers from around the world who visit her studio in Ladysmith. People who come to the studio may see all sorts of works in progress for upcoming shows. Many of the pieces are one of a kind. Since Mary exhibits regularly, there is always a large selection of both the functional and the decorative to choose from.

According to Mary, creating beautiful vessels for people to use or contemplate is a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend one’s life.

Many of our vendors use only local natural organic ingredients and support local farmers and growers within the Comox Valley and region to help create a sustainable community. They are also great role models in reducing their environmental footprint by offering biodegradable cups, napkins, and cutlery and most condiments are offered in reusable containers. To help achieve a goal of zero waste, they use and encourage recycling on the grounds.

Look out for: Deman Island Coffee, Waffl es and Perogies from Belgian (via Merville), Pasta from Cowichan, Falafel from Salt Spring Island, Greek from Acropolis and Yummies Greek, festival favourite Farm’s Gate Food, Canada’s Best Mini Donuts, Royston Roasting Coffee, hand- pressed fresh Lemonade. Andy Everson, Northwest Coast Artistwww.andyeverson.comAndy Everson was born in Comox and named Nagedzi after his grandfather, the late Chief Andy Frank of the K’ómoks First Nation. Infl uenced heavily by his grandmother, Andy began drawing Northwest Coast art at an early age. He has developed his Kwakiutl art in various mediums, from beautiful limited edition prints and giclees to designing and painting Chilkat blankets for use in potlatch dancing. Andy has tried to follow in the footsteps of his Kwakiutl relatives in creating bold and unique representations that remain rooted in the age-old traditions of his ancestors. The ability to create and print most of his own work has allowed Andy to explore and express his ancestral artwork in a number of contemporary ways.

Colour of Life Artwork by Sheryl Sawchukwww.sherylsawchuk.comMy artwork is a celebration of the beauty and joy in life. I like to examine things up close or take a narrower view on a landscape, so I can explore the details and really appreciate the intricacies that I see. I hope that people will be inspired by my work and look more closely at the world around them. When people see the beauty that exists everywhere, I hope they will then do their part to protect and nurture it and the natural world so that it can be maintained and sustained for generations to come.

30TH FILBERG FESTIVAL 2012 ENTERTAINERS — 23

2012Introduction to entertainersIntroduction to entertainersThis is our 30th Anniversary, and as a well established juried arts and craft festival, we also appreciate and respect the craft of the musician. The entertainment at the Filberg Festival has a roots music feel to it with a musical line up that features a stellar group of Canadian performers. Most of the musicians will be presenting shows on both the Main Stage, and on the more intimate Garden Stage. But some performers are only featured on one stage, so you might want to check out your program carefully so you don’t miss your favourite musical act.

The Filberg Festival has a tradition of presenting some of this country’s fi nest musicians. We anticipate this great music line-up is going to attract enthusiastic fans and we ask that festival attendees be kind and courteous as we

try and make room for everyone to have a chance to listen to the music. Our aim is to make sure that everyone has a good time. Please remember that admission to the festival is to the overall event, not any particular musical performance. This is a family friendly festival presenting four days of entertainment for the whole family. The Filberg Festival is well known for its children’s program featuring several entertaining children’s performers each day, who provide the young with a happy festival experience. In addition to this, families will fi nd many other activities to keep them busy in the Kids Area.

The Filberg Festival is held to celebrate excellence in arts and crafts and music as well as to raise the funds needed to maintain and restore the very beautiful Filberg Heritage Lodge and Gardens.

Hannah SmithHannah was born and raised in the Comox Valley and she loves kids! From the time she was little she has been artistic, so she always loved attending the Filberg Festival with her grandparents. When Hannah was invited to volunteer in the Kids Area she jumped at the opportunity, and she has volunteered every year since. This will be her sixth year. Hannah is currently teaching art and guitar to special needs kids, and she plans on going to North Island College in September to do the Emily Carr program.

Dana WilsonDana and her family have lived in the Comox Valley for six years and this is her second year volunteering in the Kids Area at the festival. Dana has been a special education assistant working with children in the public school system and she has also been a nanny. Dana lived overseas in the Maldives for fi ve years, where she taught English to preschoolers and adults at the Language Learning Center. While living in the Maldives she travelled extensively through South East Asia with her family, which includes her two boys whom she has homeschooled for eight years. When Dana has spare time she likes to garden, read, hike, ski and do various crafts.

The Filberg Lodge is a beautiful, hand-crafted, historic home tucked away in a quiet corner of Comox. This year we are showcasing the lodge as it is all year long: the past residence of Robert Filberg and his family.

You are invited to wander through Filberg Lodge on a guided tour as part of your ‘Filberg Experience’.

Designed by William Hagarty and built from 1929 to 1935; this four thousand square foot, four bedroom, four bath house on nine acres was the home to RJ (Bob) Filberg, his wife Florence, his son Robert (Buddy) Jr., and his daughter Mary.

RJ Filberg became superintendent of the Comox Logging and Railway Company, the largest logging company in coastal British Columbia at the time with over 400 employees. Filberg also founded the Comox Golf Course, developed the Elk Falls Mill, and was a

major philanthropist in the Comox Valley. The inside of the Lodge refl ects Filberg’s love

of timber with over fi ve different types used (yellow cedar, douglas fi r, pacifi c yew, red cedar, and white pine). The grounds refl ect his love of nature with

more than 100 different varieties of trees which he and Florence planted during their time here.

Mr. Filberg died in 1977 leaving his property to the Vancouver Foundation. The Town of Comox, with help from then alderman Alice Bullen, negotiated the

purchase of the property. The Lodge is now managed by a non-profi t organization: the Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park Association of which the Filberg Festival is the major fundraiser.

During the Filberg Festival tours are scheduled every 20 minutes with our knowledgeable and entertaining volunteer tour guides.

WALK THEGREEN TALKGREEN TALK

We can all learn some lessons from the Filberg Festival Food Concessions on how to walk the “green” talk. They are great models of what progressive businesses are doing to reduce their environmental footprint and encourage their customers to do the same.

Almost all our vendors will be offering only biodegradable cups, napkins, and cutlery. Most condiments are offered in reusable containers - paper plates and plastic forks are disappearing from our grounds. To help achieve a goal of zero waste, they use and encourage recycling. They also use creative serving and presentation: keep your eye out for servings in banana leaves; take-a-way products in biodegradable boxes; or discounts for those who bring their own cups & containers.

You’ll also notice our Vendors highlighting the importance of using local natural organic ingredients and supporting local farmers and small business within the Comox Valley and region to help create a sustainable economy.

It’s more than just trendy marketing or responding to consumer-led trends. Our Festival Vendors are taking practical steps to demonstrate practices consistent with their values and each individual’s responsibility for reducing our collective environmental impact. We’re very proud to host environmentally conscious businesses and invite you to come and check them out!

Keeping Things Safe

Our event is for families and we do our best to keep you safe. We are helped in that task by our twenty-four hour professional security company Footprints Security, and our volunteer security force made up of retired (or not) police offi cers, military police offi cers, and others of similar background and training.

So do come and enjoy yourselves with us, and help us keep you safe by doing your part: Make sure you keep track of your loved ones, have a safety plan of your own should you get separated in the crowds. If you see anything that concerns you or that you think may be a security concern, just speak to the fi rst person you see with a communications radio, Security uniform, or Filberg Festival Crew shirt and bring it to our attention. Thanks for being safety conscious and helping us take care of our visitors.

Bike SafeThe Comox Valley Cycling Coalition

will be operating the Bike Lock up at this year’s Filberg Festival. This activity fi ts well within their mandate: To create a safe environment for cycling in the Comox Valley and encourage cycling as an effective, economical, healthy and environmentally friendly mode of transportation. Many thanks to these community minded people who are willing to take action to support their words.

The Lodge

Memory TentIn celebration and appreciation of the 30th Filberg Festival we have unearthed our collected archives,

scrapbooks, and picture albums and made a lovely area displaying all of the most memorable, exciting, and historic Filberg Festival moments called Memory Lane.

From the fi rst festival in 1983 to the present day festival stroll through memory lane and revisit the lineup of past performers, featured artists, amazing artisans, and special snapshots of time. Take a moment to sit in the shade browsing through photo albums and scrap books, wander the interactive display and revisit posters from each year, t-shirts, banners and fl ags and extra special pictures.

Celebrating thirty years as a festival is a phenomenal achievement so we thought we should polish the bright memories of past festivals. Enjoy Memory Lane. ALICE BULLEN GREETS FESTIVAL GOERS IN 1983.

34 30TH FILBERG FESTIVAL 2012

Over the years we have worked diligently to make the Filberg Festival as “earth friendly” as possible and to minimize our environmental footprint. We believe most Festival goers care about our impact on the environment and support our efforts to make it a “green” event. So how can you help?

Here are some suggestions for minimizing our footprint, not only in the park, but in the community as well:

Use alternative transportation. Carpooling or Park & Ride are options for getting to and from the Festival in a more environmentally conscious way or ride your bike and secure it in our bike lockup.

Bring your own refi llable water bottle as well as a reusable plate, mug and cutlery.

Don’t leave any garbage behind, take it with you to recycle at home or dispose of it in our recycling containers found throughout the Park.

All of our efforts can make a big difference. We are very

mindful of how to reduce our impact and become

more environmentally effi cient. We rigorously organize the set up and take down of the Festival to have the minimal

impact on the park and wildlife. We clean up all

trash to minimize our mark on the property. We’re determined

to continue to improve our “green” efforts as caretakers and stewards of the beautiful Filberg Heritage Lodge & Park, the magnifi cent Comox Valley and the marvelous planet we call our home.
