The event, which featured 18 of the greatest bowlers in the world drafted into a rare team event held outdoors June 6-8 on specially-constructed lanes, culminated with Walter Ray Williams Jr. winning a sudden death roll-off to give Carmen’s Cartel the victory over Roth’s Raiders. The 18 bowlers (16 cham- pions from the 2007-08 Den- ny’s PBA Tour along with one additional player designated by the PBA, PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber, and another desig- nated by major sponsor USBC, World Bowler of the Year Ja- son Belmonte from Australia) were divided into three teams with players being selected by three “captains” – PBA Hall of Famers Mark Roth, Carmen Salvino and Brian Voss. At the end of the 12 game round robin match play series, the top two teams of Carmen’s Cartel (Walter Ray Williams Jr., Wes Malott, Mika Koivu- niemi, Jason Belmonte, Sean Rash and Michael Fagan) and Roth’s Raiders (Chris Barnes, Parker Bohn III, Tommy Jones, Rhino Page, Mike Wolfe and Patrick Allen) advanced to the championship round, which consisted of one singles match, one doubles match and one Baker-style match, with the captains choosing the par- ticipants for each match. The singles match saw Williams Jr. and Bohn III tie at 279, resulting in a roll-off. Both tied on the first attempt, Bohn III leaving the 2-4-7 and Williams Jr. leaving the 6-7- 10, forcing a second roll-off. Due to a rain delay, Bohn III and Williams Jr. had to wait until the next day to finish the contest. But in the end, it was Williams Jr. who came out victorious leaving a solid 10 to Bohn III’s 6-8 spare to give Carmen’s Cartel a 1-0 lead. Viewers Enjoy Exciting End to the GEICO PBA Team Shootout In the doubles match, Mi- chael Fagan and Mika Koivu- niemi defeated Rhino Page and Chris Barnes 233-201, giving Carmen’s Cartel a comfortable 2-0 lead. But Roth’s Raiders came right back and won the team competition, defeating Car- men’s Cartel 230-203, tying the championship round 2-2. This forced a sudden death roll-off, and Williams Jr. was again asked to rise to the oc- casion. In the sudden death roll- off, Williams Jr. left a weak 10 pin. Jones then left the 2-8 spare, allowing Carmen’s Car- tel to squeak out the champi- onship victory. “I tried to throw a strike, didn’t strike, and I really didn’t think nine was going to be enough,” Williams Jr. said. “I saw Tommy was pretty well lined up, he had been throw- ing strikes all day, and I really thought he was going to strike. I was shocked when I saw he only hit eight, but that’s part of the game … in bowling noth- ing’s ever guaranteed.” “To be apart of a team with some of the best bowlers in the world is unreal,” Belmonte added. “To win with such as great team makes it so much sweeter. Carmen was a great help to me, he would calm me down and keep me relaxed and at the same time would give me great advice for key situ- ations. Roth’s Raiders fought till the last ball was thrown. I can tell you I have no nails left when it came down to the one ball roll-off at the end.” Repeat telecasts of the GEICO PBA Team Shootout will air on ESPN and ESPN 2 throughout the summer.

LAKEWOOD—The 51st season league meeting for the 16-team Las Vegas Traveling 675 Classified Foursome was held Monday at Cal Bowl. A few minor changes in rules were made and the 33 week schedule will end in Las Vegas Monday, April 6. with option-al doubles and singles events. Opening day will be 10 a.m. August 18 at Cerritos Lanes.

President Roberta Mc-Naught presided, and also brought a huge cake to cel-ebrate this writer’s 85th birth-day, which was served with coffee during the meeting.

Roberta also had a surprise for Alice and the league. She had notified USBC of our 50th anniversary last season and they sent a beautiful USBC wall plaque commemorating the event. It arrived too late for presentation at the annual awards luncheon so she waited until this meeting to unveil it and we all appreciate and thank her for making it happen.

Unfortunately, two teams will need replacement bowl-ers. One team needs two bowl-ers and the other team needs one. Any average is accept-able, since the teams handicap to 675. Please call Alice at (562) 423-1567 for more in-formation and to sign on as a regular member or a sub.

We deeply regret closing the column with sad news that Jamie Vallier’s husband, Joe, has passed away. Although he suffered failing health, Joe often came to league sessions and joined the other husbands watching their wives bowl. We will miss him and all of us extend deepest sympathy to Jamie and the family in their loss.

ARCADIA—Jimmy Wong has had good fortune during the Month of July thus far and deservedly so. The af-fable ABTA Member had a great time in Las Vegas at our Event at the South Point and followed it up two weeks later as he won his first ABTA Title at Bowling Square in a clutch performance, doubling to edge a determined Speedy Bryant for the title and a nice $2.200 win

Our return to Bowling Square saw 232 entrants enter and produce cut scores of +58 (men) and +26 for our ladies to make it to the semis. Also added to the semis were Super Seniors Roger Romero, Leo Tartamella and Bobbie Mc Collum.

Due to the nice turnout 59 bowlers made the Semis. Jimmy Wong was “Red Hot” and fired a nice +147 to be top seed and be able to bowl in the title game right behind pretty Sophia Kim Sy at +134 who would enter in round two of the single elims (top 16). It took a +68 Men to make the sweet 16 single elim finals, and +58 for the three guaran-teed women.

The Bowlers took to the lanes. In the first round single elims losing were Deb Bradley, Alan Gong, BedellVasquez.La Sandra Chaney, Phillip Sujo, Chris Ordonez, and Richard Chou. They got checks of $100 in 10-16th places.

In round two being elimi-nated were Vic Arteraga, John Gonzales, Anthony Marti-nez and Michael Kong. They cashed in 6-9th places and $110 each.

Round three had Sophia Kim-Sy blast Samson Kong 263-201. Speedy Bryant downed “Panther Man” Dan-ny Reece 221-178. Samson and Danny were 4th and 5th

with fine bowling and $120. Sophia and Speedy to meet for the right to bowl Wong for the title. In this game Sophia got tapped and Speedy was on his game in a 257-219 win and on to the title game. I might add that Sophia bowled very very well and could have won with a break or two as she finished 3rd, her highest thus far! Great bowling!!

The title game was set and the horses were paid! Speedy paid $48 for everyone who had him at the $5.00 fun bets. We would see who would become the latest Champion. Speedy led off, fired a four bagger! But Jimmy not to be denied had two spares and answered with a five bagger to take a lead. It was so close Speedy going for a double left a 7 pin and un-like him whiffed it. Keeping Jimmy in the lead and to trail in the game. Speedy finished strong and doubled in frames 8-9. Jimmy needing a mark, spared, + 9 to finish at a big 232/262. Speedy was locked out by a pin. He doubled the 10th to lose by five pins and what a great match. The title went to the gentleman from San Gabriel. Jimmy picked up a nice $2,200. First Place Prize and of course the Cham-pion’s shirt and Plaque will go to him also. Great Bowling Mr Wong.

Great bowling also by Speedy who is a ABTA Mem-ber and Supporter for many years. Really improved bowl-er since I have met him. He is a Gentelman and nice to all.

Sophia Kim Sy is becoming one of our finest lady bowlers, and could have been the win-ner. She is at most every event and is a beautiful young lady whose bowling is certainly on the Upswing! A title will be in her future.

Tourney Hi Qualifiers were

Roland Escarces +165 for the men and Yu Lam the ladies at +75. They will get paid en-tries.

Speedy again? Yes, as he was last standing in the 3-6-9 roll-off. We go for a sweet $1,700 this week at Cal Bowl. He gained a $50 Consolation Pot .

The Match Game was Matched at 178 by one of our pretty ladies La Sandra Chaney. She got a nice $1,575 pot. We estimate the Match Game at $ 1,250 this week.

Match Series worth $312 was matched at 477 by one of our fine gentlemen Robert Morales who fired a sweet 159 triplicate / 477 drawn by Roland Escarces. We will es-timate the Series at $400 this week .

Champion Jimmy Wong is from San Gabriel, and used a Morich drilled by Spanky at Bowlers Image. He is mar-ried to a beautiful lady,ABTA Member Aida. They have 3 kids! Alex, Anson, and Aldea. He thanks the support of is friends,David, Billy, Angel, Mike K., Samson and Andy Mak for support and the ABTA for a fine event and Bowling Square.

Some how we don’t have info for Speedy. But he is a great guy and an ABTA Sup-porter. ABTA League Bowler for many years. He is one of the Good Guys!

Sophia Kim-Sy is from Buena Park, and used a Twist-ed Fury drilled by Ramon at R & E Pro Shop in Carter Lanes. She thanks her “sister at heart” ABTA Member, Carin Fujitani for her support, her brother Ja-son Kim, and husband Marc. She adds Special Thanks to Chicken Chow-Mein for their help, Billy Chao, Angel Chau and Marvin Crowder for cheering.

It is history folks, as Jim-my Wong enters the archives our latest Champion!

Thanks so much to Bowl-ing Square for hosting us and Eddie for the competitive shot. Special Kudos to the Mou Liu Bowlers who turned out in force and we are proud to be a sponsor of the fine Mou Liu League there.

(562) 868-3261 • www.keystonelanes.comNATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWSby Connie Marchione

Hello Readers, I am back, not completely well but well enough to write this column. As many of you knew I had an accidental and embarrassing fall from the stage during the USBC

Hall of Fame ceremonies at Kansas City last May.During my recovery from five broken ribs on left side, bruised left lung and separated left shoul-

der, I have received many get-well cards and emails from deaf friends and friend bowling writers. I’m trying to thank all of them for their kind concerns and thoughtfulness, especially to my friends from BPAA for the mini chest potted plant, to the PCDBA/PCDWBA officers, bowlers and fans for the two signed up bowling pins and my beloved Southern California Deaf Traveling League for the signed up get-well card.

So far now my ribs are still in healing stage, my left lung had been drained twice and my left shoulder is undergoing therapy. If I am careful to let the healings go right, I hope to be ready for bowling in the fall season.

Lets start where I left off the last time I wrote. That was about the news of San Diego’s Robert Ellison’s tremendous 878 series at Parkway Bowl. All I had at that time was just the games and name of bowling center and nothing else. The feat was worth mentioning but remembering Mark Fisser’s ill-fated 867 bowled in an unsanctioned league at West Covina Bowl in 2005, I must make sure that Ellison’s 878 with a 300 were in a USBC certified league. Now the story can be told, although a bit late.

\ELLISON’S BIG 878 SERIES 2ND HIGHEST IN DEAF BOWLING RECORDS

\SAN DIEGO—When Ed Abakumoff passed on to me the news that Deaf Team USA member Robert Ellison tossed games of 289-300-289 for a tremendous 878 series at Parkway Bowl in San Diego, I contacted Robert for more information.

Then I left for the USBC Convention and it’s Clash of Champions at Kansas City and there during the gathering of the Hall of Famers, the legendary bowling coach, John Jowdy asked me if I knew about Robert Ellison’s feat. I replied yes and asked if he saw him do it. Jowdy, who is in both USBC and PBA Halls of Fame, said no, he just stopped by Parkway Bowl and the manager told him. Jowdy, then astonished the Hall of Fame gathering with Ellison’s 878 feat.

Almost one year after on April 27, 2007 Carl Malucci rolled 279-290-300 for his certified 869 series, Robert Ellison, who is 43 and began bowling at 6, surpassed that with his 289-300-289 for 878.

Ellison said his series was bowled in the Parkway Bowl’s Masters Singles League and is now the highest series in the center’s 50 years history. He made 32 strikes out of 36, leaving a 7 pin and a 10 pin on his 11th ball in 1st and 3rd games and spared both.

“ I felt ecstatic and numb,” Ellison wrote in an e-mail. “ I felt like I was on Cloud 9. It’s an awesome feeling of bowling well and “in the groove.” For his 878 series, Ellison will receive an 800 series watch from the USBC Bowling Congress, $ 100 from Parkway Bowl for bowling a 300 game and if it is the area’s highest series this year, an award of merit from the USBC.

There is an oddity between Malucci’s and Ellison’s series, both did not win any events in their prior week Great Lakes Deaf Bowling Association tournament, then Wham! in their leagues they hit their highest series. Malucci also left two pins, a pair of 7 pins in his 769 series but he struck 34 times out of 36. Malucci’s 869 is also the highest series in Brunswick West Covina Lanes.

For the Deaf Bowling Records, Ellison’s 878 is now second to Denver’s former two times Deaf Team USA member Tony Passarelli’s 888 (289-299-300) which was rolled in a Colorado State Team Tournament.

Malucci’s 869 fell to 3rd place while Ken DeGroff’s 865 (265-300-300) rolled in a Palm Beach, FL league is now 4th. Bill Hayse’s 859 (286-284-289) made in a Knoxville, TN league placed 5th. If there is any errors, kindly let me know with proofs.

Citrus Belt Hall of Fame Banquet A Rousing Success

by Frank Weiler

RIVERSIDE—As an audience of fifty bowlers listened atten-tively last Saturday, Hall of Famer Norris Turner inducted Dick Evitt into the Citrus Belt Hall of Fame. Evitt was inducted for his twenty plus years of meritorious service to the sport of bowling.

Evitt’s service began when he managed bowling centers as a military recreation officer, continued as a Citrus Belt volunteer, and culminated in 1996 with his selection as association Director of the Year for service to our bowlers beyond the call of duty.

This years Hall of Fame committee included Nita Schmidt (chair person), Phosie Lotze, Nicole Ellison, and Bob Lewis.

After a delicious dinner of stuffed breast of chicken and fet-tucine alfredo, prepared by the staff of the Orangecrest Club, Paula Vidad gave the keynote speech. She spoke about her ex-periences as a professional bowler on the Ladies Professional Bowlers Tour and the life lessons it taught her.

Our new office manager Elise Hamner presented plaques to this seasons award winners, including our Director of the Year, Bob Lewis. Thank You Bowling News for supporting Citrus Belt bowlers.

Citrus Belts RAY COBB Continues Striking Success on PBA Senior Tour

by Frank WeilerBRENTWOOD—RAY COBB placed 26th after sixteen

games of qualifying by averaging 228 per game at the PBA Se-nior Northern California Classic. After two qualifying blocks of eight games each, the field of 85 bowlers was cut to 32 for match play.

Cobb opened match play averaging 233 and winning his first against Mike Henry. He averaged 223 in his second match but was eliminated by PBA star Roger LeClair who averaged 230 in their four game match. Cobbs efforts netted him a $1,300 payday.

Nick Miller won the tourney defeating PBA champion Dale Traber in the title game. Thank You Bowling News for support-ing Citrus Belt bowlers.

Juanita Blocker July 15th, 2008 Age “90”

An Exciting Milestone For Juanita Blockerby Phyl Knoll

LOSANGELES — We all who keep in constant touch with Juanita have been for months counting the days until July 15, 2008. And, I happen to know, she had been doing the same. For, you see, Juanita was born on July 15th...IN YEAR 1918. That’s “90” years ago my friends! And she’s still talking about the surprise party I pulled off on her at Country Villa Terrace on her BIG day. Joining me in the celebration activities was Juanita’s cousin Charlene Martin, niece Pat Boyd, family acquaintance Yvonne King, fellow bowling friends Rose Allen, Lupe Burke, B.A. Chester, Minnie Elliott, Darvin Green, Jo Vivan McCampbell, Alma McNair and fellow residents of the facility. After this talented group sang Happy Birthday to Juanita, I read a special greeting direct from the White House, signed by none other than President George Bush and Laura Bush. Naturally all diets were thrown out while each of us enjoyed a piece of the scrump-tious decorated cake...and what’s cake without...ice cream? It was a wonderful afternoon while Juanita enjoyed chatting about “the good ol’ days” and getting up-date information on others in the bowling family. Of course, being such a great writer herself, Juanita read each and every word on the many, many cards she received. Juanita has been through a pretty tough past couple of years, but with the support and words of encouragement from all her family and close friends, she has been able to reach this wonder-ful milestone in life. And now, look forward to the next one...that “century” mark. And, you know, with our help, I’ll put my money on her...that she’ll make it. Address your mail to Juanita Blocker, % Country Villa Terrace, Room 215, 6050 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90035.

Phil Shelton Memorial Tournament - Marcel McMahan8 Strikes in a row 246/589 - 106 pins over average

South Bay Youth Collect Awards And ScholarshipsBy Phyl Knoll

TORRANCE — AMF Bowl-O-Drome hosted an Awards Ceremony on April 26th for all 46 members of their Tornados Winter Youth League. First place honors Team 2 (Strikes & Spares), Jake Lozoya, Ashley Enge, both 10 years old and Kenji Chong, the collegiate

21 year old won 38 of the 60 games bowled. Kenji, who celebrates his 22nd birthday this summer and will move into the Adult Leagues for 2008-2009 season, did not begin his bowling career until age 16 while participating in the youth league at Gardena

Bowl. This is the second First Place finish for Kenji in this youth league. Along side of him every week was two youngsters with tremendous potential. Ashley, returning for her second season finished with a 120 average, recording a HSG of 126 and

HSS of 362. Jake who had never league bowled before will book an average of 95 and posted a HSG of 156 and HSS of 403. Ashley is joined in the league with her two brothers, Andrew and Aaron. The Tornados participated in the 2008 Annual Phil Shelton Memorial Tournament with one of their members Marcel McMahan, competing in the Boys 9-11 Division, bringing everyone in the center to their feet. Marcel bowled 8 strikes in a row for a 246 game and a 589 series—106 pins over his average. At the USBC Awards Ceremony on April 27th, Mar-cel was rewarded with a $75 scholarship. Of course, all these wonder-ful leagues don’t just happed! This league started with some 15-20 youngsters and now has 15 teams of trios. We all know it takes the TLC of people like Misty Dawn Brown, who is President of this and the Gentle Breeze League, to instill in the youngsters the courage to want to join the league and in the par-ents their support and encour-agement. And more important, it takes all of us to do our part. If they solicit you to partici-pate in ther fundraiser... Don’t turn away! THESE YOUNG PEOPLE ARE BOWLING’S FUTURE!

Brent Burns The Wood & Partner Lorentsen Tosses Perfecto in Rocky Marsh Doubles

by Joy McGregorANAHEIM—The dynamic due of Terry Brent and sub Don

Lorentsen were gellin’ Friday morning in the “HOT” Rocky Marsh Doubles --- you could see the steam rising as the strikes kept coming, fast and furious! Terry stroked the left-hand side of those “HOT” lanes - 192-267-257 for 716 and added 259 to post a stellar 975 set. On the righties side of the lanes, Don Lorentsen tossed 204-223-237 and THEN, after a couple (right from the horses mouth), trip 4’s... his pocket grew wider and the ball just ‘floated’ into the one-three for twelve of those awesome X’s and V O I L A -- a PERFECT GAME!! Don’s games totalled 964 and their combined scores added up to a great 559 game and fantastic 1939 team series. That’s what I call some “HOT SHOT” bowl-ing from two of the nicest gentlemen!

There were seven bowlers reaching that coveted 900 and they are:Tony “Too Tuff” Hale 246-260 (764) and 201 for 965; Shig “Big Kahuna” Shozi 247-257-209(713) and 237 for 950; E.J. “Lefty” Rogers 233-201-215 and 266 for 915, Ron Marcus 245-249-239 (733) and 181 for 914 and rounding out today’s “elite list” is John “Big Bad” Conway 206-193-221 and 286 for 906.

Our featured lady bowler is none other than Hall of Famer A. Rose Williams. Rose is bowling consistently well this summer and now boasts a nice 206 average. Rose put together games of 244-188-215 and 223 to tally a fine 860.

More sizzlin’ HOT scores: Willy Bordenave 246-898, David Wright 248-894, Willie Harris 267-891, Kerry Wright 238-888, Carl Adinolfi 248-872, Frank Bellinder 239-870, Tony Chaco 257-854, Bob Gosnell 226-853, Johny Munson 235-841, Eva Munson 237-836, Larry Green 224-805, Alan Bloom 234-803, Ed Hermance 234, Rich Heid 234, Orlando Venegas 224, Kantral Williams 222, Kyle Osterman 221, Hong Kha 220, John Phillips 218, Janine Ditch 215, Jack Polee 205, Gino Vassallo 205, Rey Ortiz 205 and Juan Sandoval 200.

We welcome Orlando Venegas back to bowling after suffer-ing a very bad fall and subsequent surgery toward the end of our 590 Classic league. His Dr. gave him thumbs up to “get out there with the masses and excercise.” So... he came bowling of course. He was fortunate to be able to fill in for one of our bowlers who was not able to complete the fourth game. Orlando hasn’t lost a thing ... he bowled a 224 game. Good for you Orlando and now you know you WILL be able to perform when the 590 Classic resumes. Keep practiciing. Until next week...

ANAHEIM — In last week’s article for Linbrook Bowling Center this typesetter mistakenly told you that Ozzie’s Senior Scotch Doubles as being held at Cal Bowl when it really was at Linbrook Bowling Center. My apologies if that caused any hardship for any bowlers. Next month we’ll be sure to double proof that part of the story. The new August date for Ozzie’s is August 16th so mark your calendars and we’ll see you at Linbrook Bowling Center. Some Team Names Are Fun And Graphicby Carol Mancini

NORWALK — In todays mail, I received a note and a league sheet from a friend of 30 years, Bev Petrillo. She bowls at Victor Bowl and wanted to share some “team names” from her SENIOR LEAGUE. Some are familiar standards, and others just fun. How about “Split Happens”, “We Kick Butt”, “Yeah Baby”, “Rolling Thunder”, “Deal With It” and “Bring It On”??? One of my favorites was “Heart Attack Pack”. A Senior League? But “Carol’s Boys” is at the top of the sheet and has my vote as best team name. Thanks Bev. And “Greetings” to Kim Katich and friends at Victor Bowl.
