Yes, it is almost here, the 2018Sibley County Fair in Arlington.Between rains we are getting fa-cilities ready for August 1-5. Weare proud to be back to a five-dayGrandstand event schedule. Start-ing Wednesday night ArlingtonRaceway will present the StockCar Shoot Out a great familyevent with fast cars plenty of noiseand great food and refreshments.Thursday night the ever-popularTractor pull returns after a fewyears hiatus. My personal fa-vorites are mean and green butyou have to be there to see if I amright. Friday night the crazy wreckum, crash um, do the nearly im-possible Night of Destructiononce again takes place. New thisyear will be School bus races. Now you can see which bus youmaybe rode in is the fastest. Ofcourse drivers will be picked fortheir expertise in bus racing ifthere is such a thing. Saturdaynight the Arlington RacewayAuto Races take place with thecontinuation to see who the bestof this year’s drivers are.

NOW for SUNDAY the new andimproved SIBLEY SLAM DEMO-LITION DERBY returns with morecars, more money on the line sothe heats will be vicious, the finalswill be horrendous. When it’s over

you will want to walk home in casesome of them decide to drivehome, too.

As usual, the lead up to thegrandstand will be entertainmenton the Heritage stage. StartingThursday at 1 p.m. polka enter-tainment begins highlighted by theBake and Taste followed byCharlie Sticha Polka Band untill6 p.m.

There will be many changes atthe Sibley County Fairgrounds inArlington this year, according toSibley County Fair Board mem-ber Dennis Van Moorlehem.

The Horticulture Building andNon-Animal 4-H Building will beseparated with new walls be-tween them.

There will be concrete wheelchair ramps leading to the grand-stand, Sheep Barn, Poultry Barn,Rabbit Barn, Porky’s north door, and the south end of the HeritageBuilding leading out to the road. These ramps have been in theplanning stages for many years.

There will be additional black-topping by the EntertainmentBuilding, Legion Building,

VFW Building and HeritageBuilding area.

The general area should bewheel chair accessible by fairtime.

There are plans to have a totalrebuild of the restroom by the OldDraft Horse Barn in time for thefair.

Additional electrical work con-tinues with new lighting in theCattle Barn and Hog Barn. Newlight poles recently arrived andmore grounds lighting is plannedwhen McGuire Electric continuesto work its magic. New soundsystem upgrades took place thisspring. More buildings have beenadded to the public address sys-

tem and there will be bettersound in front of the office.

“The usual work is progressingwell as we have committeesworking on many normal proj-ects,” said Van Moorlehem. “Yardwork is taking a huge amount oftime this year as well as road re-pair as the winter was disastrousto them this year. The horse areahas been a continuous project, but is starting to shape up. Newpen configuration has been aproject for the poultry with newstands for the pens.”

Volunteers are needed duringthe Sibley County Fair, accordingto Van Moorlehem. The volunteerwork needed is non-physical, butvery necessary. Volunteers areneeded as ticket sellers, ticket

takers, golf cart drivers, office as-sistance, runners, judges atscript drawings each night, andhorticulture check in personnel, computer entry, etc. People or or-ganizations who would like to vol-unteer are encouraged to contactDennis Van Moorlehem or anymember of the Sibley CountyFair Board.

“Finally, the work you see is theresult of sponsors, grants andother donations to the SibleyCounty Fair Board,” said VanMoorlehem. “Without their gener-ous support, most of the up-grades could not happen.”

The Sibley County Fair will beheld from Wednesday, Aug. 1through Sunday, Aug. 5.

AT THE FAIR!

www.sibleycountyfair.com 149th Annual SIBLEY COUNTY FAIR August 1–5, 2018 Page 11

By Dennis Van MoorlehemSibley County Fair Board Member

As I write this it is raining thismorning with rain in the forecastfor tonight. I am getting excited forthe 2018 Sibley County Fair in Ar-lington not only because it is theyearly highlight of entertainment

in the county but it is usually dry.

I again would like to thank thepeople who make this fair a suc-cess. The fair board, volunteers, and sponsors who step up and gothe extra mile to help us. The fairboard spends every Monday night

in the three months leading up tothe fair fixing, tuning, planning andjust brute force to make thingswork. The volunteers cover themany jobs for us where we aretoo thin to do them ourselves. Vol-unteers come from all over thecounty, and even from KansasCity, to work from early morning tilllate at night, even night over toget the jobs done. The sponsorshow can I thank them enough? They donate money, do jobs wecannot do ourselves, suggestchanges to our woeful attempts tocomplete a project. Our sponsorsare the reason when comparingus to other fairs you will see ourbuildings are second to none andour 5-day grandstand shows area variety for all ages. The scriptdrawings are funded by our spon-sors. The pride they show in ourfair is evident wherever you look. Our animal count is possibly thelargest next to the state fair.

We also hire team help during andafter the fair such as toilets, grounds, announcers, office andjudges. They do their job with nocomplaints and are available foremergencies many times at oddhours.

The one thing we all have in com-mon each year is wearing out byMonday after the fair.

I have one more thing to say thisyear. If you would consider volun-teering for something at our faircontact a fair board member. Canyou drive a golf cart, collect tick-ets, run a computer, work the frontgate, night fire watch, clean, sweep or judge flower pots. Thenyou are qualified.

Come to the fair August 1-5 seeour changes, try the food, attendthe grand stand events, join us atthe free stages in the Heritagebuilding, and Entertainment build-ing. Spend the day, meet oldfriends, have a refreshment, sitand enjoy the sunny days and, above all, dry ones.

We thank all who help
