CONNECT QUESTIONS (Host): 4 MINUTE COUNTDOWN VIDEO

1. Would you rather have a house full of frogs or a house full of bugs?

2. Other than God, what is something or someone you consider to be powerful?

3. Is there anything in your life that seems impossible or out of control? What?

TIMELINE VIDEO– Moses

(Storyteller)

The Big God Story: Point out that what kids are about to hear is true and is recorded in the

Bible. Open your Bible to the passage and leave it open and visible throughout The Big God

Story. Invite kids to open their Bibles and follow along as you storytell. Children respond to what

the Holy Spirit is teaching them as they reflect on the day’s portion of The Big God Story.

The Prayer of Release: This allows children and leaders to pause, be still, and ask God to quiet

their hearts and minds. Before you pray, you might ask the kids to hold out their hands, palms

up, in a spirit of releasing their worries and distractions in order to better receive what the Holy

Spirit might have for them today. Then encourage the kids to quiet their voices, take a seat, and

pray with you.

The Big God Story:

Storyteller Script

Today we’re going to learn that God is all-powerful. In our Bible story, he showed his power by sending plagues to Egypt! A plague is a big, sudden event where a lot of something happens that can hurt people and destroy places. The plagues God sent included frogs all over the place and bugs all over the place. During your connect question time your small group leader asked you if you’d rather have a house full of frogs or a house full of bugs. Ask kids to raise their hands to indicate if they chose frogs. Then have kids raise their hands to indicate if they chose bugs.

Neither of those options sounds great! But God had to show his power to the Egyptians so they’d free his people, the Israelites, from slavery. Let’s see what else God did to show his power in the Bible story. God is always with us and ready to talk to us. One way God reveals his power to us is through the Bible. It’s his story. Before we dig in to the Bible, let’s talk to God. Pray a prayer of release also praising God for being all-powerful.

Tech Cue: Storytelling video: God’s Story: Passover (4 minutes)

Wow! Let’s talk more about God’s power and how he displayed his power through nine plagues first and the meaning behind why God may have done that. Were these plagues just random bad things, or did God have a specific reason for each plague he sent? To answer that, we’re going to consider the gods that the Egyptians worshipped. They didn’t believe in the one true God, but they had a lot of fake gods they worshipped.

Hapi, god of the Nile (Nile turned to blood) (show image)

Heqet, frog goddess (frogs) (show image)

Apis, god of cattle; Hathor, cow goddess (death of livestock) (show image)

Nut, goddess of the sky (hail) (show image)

Khepri, beetle god; Senehem, locust god (locusts, gnats, flies) (show image)

Ra, sun god and supreme deity (darkness) (show image)

Imhotep, god of medicine (boils) (show image)

Osiris, god of rebirth and god of Pharaoh’s power (death of the firstborn) (show image)

Wow! It seems like most of the plagues showed power over a specific god the Egyptians worshipped. The plagues were part of a spiritual battle between God and the false gods of Egypt. The plagues were God’s judgment against the Egyptians’ false gods, showing his power over them. The Egyptians worshipped all these gods that weren’t real. The gods had no power because they were made up. But God is all-powerful. He is real, and he can do anything. After nine plagues God sent one final plague that was really important. imagine how horrible the next plague would be.

Read Exodus 11:4-6.

4 Moses told Pharaoh, “The Lord says, ‘About midnight I will go through

every part of Egypt. 5 Every oldest son in Egypt will die. The oldest son of

Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, will die. The oldest son of every female slave, who works at her hand mill, will die. All the male animals born first to their mothers among the cattle will also die.

6 There will be loud crying

all over Egypt. It will be worse than it’s ever been before. And nothing like it will ever be heard again.

How would you feel if this plague happened in your family? (Call on a few volunteers) As with some of the other plagues, God made a way to keep the Israelites safe. They had to put the blood of a sheep or goat on the corners of their doors, and God would know to “pass over” or pass by their house without letting anyone die. This became a special day called Passover. But for the Egyptians, it was a very, very sad time. It’s hard to imagine how sad it must have been. But remember, God is all-powerful, and he kept the Israelites safe if they had blood on their doorframes. This was it. This was when Pharaoh finally decided to let the Israelites go. They were free! Pharaoh realized his power was no match for God’s. So if God was showing power over specific false gods back then…how does God show us he’s all-powerful today? He shows us through his Son, Jesus because not only was God showing he was the one true God, truer than the Egyptian's false Gods but he was showing us a picture of what his son would do for us one day. One day God would allow his perfect sinless Son Jesus to be our perfect lamb. His blood would save us in the same way that the blood of a perfect sacrificed lamb painted on the door frames saved the Israelites as the death angel passed over their home.

(Tiffany will do extended teaching on communion and its symbolism to the Passover.)

WORSHIP VIDEO 3: Glory to God

After a time of worshipping have kids come and take communion if they have been baptized, and bring their offering.

Fade out song slowly at Worship Leader’s prompting. (As the song comes to a close Worship Leader tells groups to head to their small group space. Say something like, “Let’s continue responding to what God is teaching us as we dismiss to our small groups. Please follow your small group leader at this time.”) IMAGE: It’s time for small groups Turn main overhead lights on Dismiss for small groups—refer to map for small group locations ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At the end of small groups… Tech cue: 2 minute warning with exit song, using ceiling speakers, at the host’s prompting Turn speakers back to wall speakers for blessing, closing song and dismissal.

GOAL: Kids build relationships with each other and their leader as they respond to what they heard

in the Big God Story.

PLAY A CARD GAME: WAR

SUPPLIES • One deck of cards per group: Aces and jokers will be removed from the card decks and all re-

maining cards will be shuffled. There will be one stack of all four aces in a paperclip. Don’t let the kids see this is separate.

• Power Over All Handout ENGAGE Give each child a set of four playing cards, making a mental note of who gets the four aces. Tell kids to keep their cards in a stack, facedown. We’re going to have a tournament of the card game War. Find a partner, and play four turns of War against that person. In this game, you’ll each show your top card. The person with the higher card keeps both. Aces are the highest card you can have. And if you both show the same number, you’ll each keep your own card. Have kids play one round of four turns. Then have kids find new partners for another round, contin-uing to change partners each round until they’re out of cards. In the end, the child with the four aces will win. Here’s a trick: I knew [name of child] would win because I purposely gave him (or her) all the most powerful cards—the aces. How do you feel knowing that the game was rigged for one person to have the most power? How is our rigged game like God’s power? How is it different? In our game, one person had the most power. I knew 100% that [child’s name] would win in the end. Since God is all-powerful, we know 100% he’ll always win, too. Sometimes, other things might seem powerful in our lives. For the Israelites, the Egyptians definitely seemed more powerful! But God showed that his power was much greater than the Egyptians’ power…and their gods. Let’s explore what seems powerful in our lives and how we can trust that God has more power. DIG DEEPER: Collect the cards, and write “God” on an ace card. Have kids name things that seem powerful or in control today. Encourage kids to think of negative examples rather than things like electricity. Write each thing on a separate card (not the aces). If you need ideas to help kids get started, see the list on the next page. Let’s see what the Bible says about God’s power over some of these things. The following list provides Scripture references that show God’s power over some of the things named. While this may not completely cover what kids in your class named, help kids see God’s power by reading the references together for the ones that match or are similar to what kids named. (You can skip those that don’t reflect what kids shared.) Continued on next page….

GOAL: Kids build relationships with each other and their leader as they respond to what they heard

in the Big God Story.

One great idea is to have kids choose one they want to read and form groups with others who chose the same topic, and then read the corresponding verse or passage from the “Power Over All” handout. Or you could assign each small group one of the topics. These verses make a great take-home for future reference, so make sure kids each get a copy of the handout to take home.

• our worries (1 Peter 5:7) • our fears (2 Timothy 1:7) • political leaders (Psalm 20:7-8) • sickness (Matthew 15:30) • death (1 Corinthians 15:57) • evil (Psalm 34:15-16) • sadness (Matthew 5:4) • natural disasters (Job 38:37-38 – let kids know this verse is God speaking) • violence (Psalm 56:11) • people with a lot of money (Matthew 6:19-20) • other troubles (John 16:33) • temptation/bad choices (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Take the ace that says “God” on the wall and keep it in your hand. Have the kids play “war” against you with the cards they wrote on. Obviously your card Ace/God card will always win. Our verses reveal God is all-powerful. He’ll always have more power than the “powerful” things in our world. As you play your card against mine, think about something that feels powerful in your life. Then thank God that he’s already won that war.

Dig In to the Bible

Read: Exodus 7:14–12:30

In This Passage: God is all-powerful, and he shows his power in a big way! To show his power to

the Pharaoh of Egypt,he sends 10 devastating plagues. Finally, Pharaoh is convinced of God’s

power and decides to free the Israelite slaves.

Bible Point: God is all-powerful…

Application: …so we respect him.

Summary Verse: “Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlast-

ing God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the

depths of his understanding” (Isaiah 40:28).

Dig Deeper

You’ll Be Teaching: God is all-powerful. At times, kids can feel powerless. Full of worries, fears,

and uncertainties, they may wonder if God’s power is actually real for them. Help kids see that

although the Israelites were powerless slaves, God showed up for them in a big, powerful way.

He can do the same for us.

Think About: What do you need God’s power for in your life?

Dig In to Prayer

Pray that God would reveal his power in kids’ lives.

Quick Tip

In a lesson about the 10 plagues, it can be tempting to focus on kids memorizing what the plagues

were and in what order they happened. Try not to focus on that. The point is that God showed

his power in big, amazing ways. If kids walk away knowing the 10 plagues in order but missing

how God’s power is real in their lives, you’ve missed an opportunity for transformation.
