Our Hope By C. Lee Clark, Rescue Mission CEO If you walk or drive by my home, you might catch a glimpse of hydrangeas along the driveway and all across the backyard. In June and July they are a celebration of blue, pink and white blossoms. These aren’t pedigreed plants from a nursery. Most actually started from one plant given to me years ago by my Granny Turner. Over time, that one plant has self-rooted into multiple new ones. Mary Evelyn Turner was a talented woman, small in stature but large in her creative abilities. Gardening was chief among her many pursuits and she came from a long line of strong, resourceful women. In particular, the start to these hydrangeas came from her mother who was born in 1879 and still living when I was a little guy. Family stories include how she had a double row of these same hydrangeas from the road up to her front steps. She’d pour the remains of her soapy dish water along the roots of these mop headed flowers to influence shades of pink or blue. Think for a moment of the people you’re linked to in your earliest memories. If you connect the changes they saw in their lifetime to the changes you’ve seen, a timeline of both positive and neg- ative world events will emerge. For me, this was a much needed exercise to both gain perspective and to push for continued transformation. There have been wars, natural and manmade disasters, oppression, genocide, disease, trage- dies of every scale imaginable. There have also been incredible inventions, medical marvels, technological advances, educational and research achievements, miracles of every scale imaginable. People of faith are incredibly resilient, finding hope, strength and encouragement in God’s word and through his Spirit, turning even the bleakest situations into opportunities to glorify God. Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities set before and during the French Revolution, opens with It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolish- ness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything be- fore us, we had nothing before us, we were all go- ing direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authori- ties insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. Our Hope By C. Lee Clark, Rescue Mission CEO

If you walk or drive by my home, you might catch a glimpse of hydrangeas along the driveway and all across the backyard.

If you connect the changes they saw in their lifetime to the changes you’ve seen, a timeline of both positive and neg-ative world events will emerge. Happy BirthdayTo us!

Wonder WomanSince its founding, the Rescue Mission has provided second chances to so many who are hurting in the Roanoke Valley and be-yond. These second chances are not just for our guests, they are for staff as well.

Veronica Reilly recently celebrated four years since she walked out of the Amherst County Jail with nothing but the clothes on her back. With a felony to her name, she did not know what the future held for her, but she had faith in God. “I’ve learned to never give up, and never lose my faith in God” Veronica said about her journey since release.

Veronica came to the Rescue Mission just over a year ago to serve at the Family Shel-ter as the 3rd Shift Supervisor. Now, she leads the supervisors as a Team Lead and keeps the Family Shelter running smooth. She credits her success to her relationship with God and hard work. She is grateful that the Rescue Mission is a safe place for a second chance for staff and guests alike. Veronica told WDBJ in an interview “When a woman comes in and tells me she’s just out of jail, I can say “It’s go-ing to be ok, I’ve been there””. At the Rescue Mission we know that this is a critical aspect

to the services we offer, that whether it is in our addiction recovery program, our emer-gency shelter, or elsewhere, that we have staff members that can identify with those

we serve. This is critical to encouraging and inspiring our guests to the future we know they can reach. Thank you Veronica, for giving us all the inspiration we need.

these very same friends are anxious, fearful, angry and overwhelmed with the complexity of the social and medical upheavals of these times. And there is every reason to feel all these emotions.

Despite generations of derailing tragedies and traumatic experiences beyond imagination from which we should have learned lessons that would have prevented repeated miscarriage of justice coupled with advancements and achievements that raised the quality of many lives, there is still much work to be done.

Inherent in the work of this Rescue Mission to “Help Hurting People in Jesus’ Name” is the tangible experience that not everyone has benefited from changes that have lifted many lives for good. Daily we battle injus-tices carried out against people who lack resources because of the color of their skin, the family they were born into, multiplied misfortunes or the genetics of their physical and mental makeup.

These are not easy conversations to have.

As we battle poverty, homelessness and addiction, we see the many layered effects of implicit and outright bias carried out against peo-ple over generations. We cry out for justice as we seek to fix what can be mended with the comprehensive crisis intervention of this Rescue Mission. Twenty-four hours a day, 7 days a week for 72 years

your Rescue Mission has been standing with people of every race and background, with faith in Christ, to encourage and nurture transformation in his name.

In the midst of these days, we do not know what will be next. Will you stand with us? Will you catch the vision of taking the next right step, walking in faith today, leading to transformed lives? Will you pray, give and volunteer?

Matthew 12:17-21 says, 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 18 “Here is my servant whom I have chosen,    the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. 19 He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he has brought justice through to victory. 21 In his name the nations will put their hope.

Our hope is in Christ. On Christ, the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand. Our hope is built on nothing less.
