CAMBRIAN HEIGHTS PRESIDENT'S MESSAGECAMBRIAN HEIGHTS PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The Community Hall opened up for rentals and the Edelweiss Preparatory School began classes Septem-ber 8. New COVID-19 protocols are in place as recom-mended by Alberta Health Services (“AHS”). The City of Calgary has also implemented the requirement for face masks in all public indoor spaces. The Community Hall has a license of occupation with the City and is thus con-sidered a public indoor space. However, private rental functions are excluded from the mask requirements although social distancing and the voluntary use of masks is encouraged. The need for Hall rental income and community social events has now to be balanced by the risks associated with the spread of the COVID-19 virus. As such strict sanitization procedures have been put in place and only all-day Saturday rentals will be ini-tially allowed due to risks associated with the Edelweiss School children.

As a new initiative in these restrictive times, the Community Association sponsored a free pumpkin patch give away on Saturday, October 3. Over 160 pumpkins were distributed to families in Cambrian Heights. Our Social Director, Jodi Dixon, organized the purchase of these pumpkins from a local farmer and enlisted volunteers such as Mary Hopkins and her twin boys, Robert and Michael, to distribute the pumpkins. At the end of the day, other volunteers agreed to distribute by individual delivery to seniors in the neighbourhood and those unable to pickup the pumpkins that day. I have included a few pictures from the event. A full catalogue may be found on our website (https://cambrianheightscommunity.com). Other online

contests helped replace our annual Halloween month end party.

Our usual Fall indoor events, such as the Halloween Party and our Fall Wine Event, have been cancelled due to safety concerns around the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual children’s Lego Contest will not be held live this year for safety reasons. We are however sponsoring an online virtual contest in November. The Event will be judged November 21. Details are included in this news-letter and on our website. Updates and reminders will be posted on our Facebook page and sent out to you via an email blast, if you are registered with the Com-munity. Registration details are provided on the web-site. We encourage all residents to register, especially in these unusual times, for updates on all Community activities and initiatives.

In the same vein, our weekly drop-in Yoga Program and our general Fitness Programs will continue to be offered online through the end of the year. Both Lorene Hughes (fitness, [email protected]) and Kyrsten Blair (yoga, [email protected]) will operate these pro-grams, gaining from their experience when COVID-19 forced this change in March. As we approach the end of 2020, we will be monitoring AHS guidelines as to plan-ning any return to actual community hall sessions.

The introductory Spanish language classes are continu-ing at the Community Hall. This entry level course runs for 12 weeks ending December 8. It is provided through Azren, the Language Nerd staff. We hope this will be the first of many such language course curriculums. Watch for information on 2021 language courses in the De-cember Community Newsletter and our website.

The beginning of November also serves as the start of a Calgary winter. This is offset by the installation of our two ice rinks behind the community hall. These rinks provide an annual winter focus for the community due to the hard work of the rink rats. Once again volunteers make this possible. If you are available to help out, please contact the team headed by Scott at [email protected] to offer some hours of worthwhile ef-fort for the kids.

The Community Association is also looking for a volunteer to undertake the job of Secretary for the 2021 year. There remains an opportunity to join the Board of Directors and learn the job from the current

Secretary and contribute to the successful running of the Cambrian Heights Community, while contributing new ideas and joining an active group of volunteers that are your neighbours. Please contact me at [email protected] for more information.

The next meeting of the Board is scheduled for De-cember 7. While these meetings normally take place at the Georgina Thomson City building on 14 Street and Northmount Drive, recent City guidelines have restrict-ed that buildings use and for the near term all Board meetings will be held at the Community Hall. These meetings occur at 6:30 pm,, and residents are normally welcome to attend. At this point we are not encourag-ing community residents to attend due to health safety concerns. If you do wish to bring some issue forward to the Board, please contact [email protected] in advance of any meeting. Should you wish to attend the Board meeting, please follow the COVID safety pro-tocols posted on the Hall entrance and on the website.

Stay Safe.

ROSEMONT PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I hope everyone is doing okay in these crazy times. My heart goes out to all the parents who are balanc-ing school kids and the homework pressures. With all of our activities moving indoors due to the end of our beautiful autumn, everyone has to remain vigilant in helping to prevent the spread of this horrible virus. Un-fortunately, all of our Community events continue to be cancelled, except for the upcoming Rosemont Annual General Meeting on Thursday, November 19 at 7:00 pm.

This year’s format will obviously be different. We will be offering a mixture of in person and online formats. The Hall will be set up for physically distancing, with a mini-mum of 2 meters between folks. Masks will be manda-tory. We will also be providing a simulcast using Zoom that folks can view from their homes. We will need peo-ple interested in the virtual meeting to please register in advance so please RSVP at RosemontCommunity.com/AGM. I encourage everyone to please help us out on this event. We will keep the format and length short. All reports will be available a week before the meeting, on our Community website. We are looking to have reports from our MLA Jeremy Nixon, our City Councillor Sean Chu, and an introduction from our new Rosemont Prin-cipal Michelle Chastko. We’ll have a police report and various Community reports. Please plan on attending this very important event.

We really need a new secretary. This position takes up approximately 3 hours per month, mainly to record minutes from our monthly meetings, which usually last a couple of hours. We need this position filled to contin-ue forward into the new year. Once again, if you could spare your community a few hours a month, please con-tact us at [email protected].

Remembrance Day marks the beginning of a new sea-son of the best outdoor ice in Calgary. Kurt and his group of ice guys will start as soon as we get some snow in mid-November. Anyone interested in helping out can come down to the rinks Monday and Thursday nights around 7:00 pm. We start by making a frozen base, which usually requires going to the rink every night for the first couple of weeks until we get the good ice established. This is all weather dependent, but look for signs of life around the rinks and come out and help us make the best outdoor ice in Calgary! Also, another benefit of joining the Rosemont ice guys is that will be

able to sample some of Matthew G’s special Ice Guy Pale Ale, made from Rosemont estate-grown hops (AKA his backyard); should be outstanding.

On some housekeeping news, our friends at the City are looking at helping us create a better pathway from the parking lot to the south side of the Hall. With the pav-ing of the parking lot, any runoff from the lot flows west down the slope onto the skating rink. En route, it turns the main pathway to the south side of the Hall into a slushy, mucky mess. Hopefully, with a little help from our friends, we can fix this permanently in the spring.

Once again, the Executive from Rosemont would really appreciate your participation in this year’s AGM. And a reminder, we have made memberships for Rosemont residents free again this year. To get your membership, please visit RosemontCommunity.com/membership.

When your community undergoes a Local Area Plan (LAP), which determines what type of development goes where, you will use the Guidebook to help with that exercise. Through engaging with citi-zens and stakeholders, it’s a key tool used by City planners to plan a community’s future. Furthermore, a community’s LAP can be cus-tomized so future growth respects a community’s unique identity, conditions, and environments. It makes sure our neighbourhoods can continue to grow and be more vibrant over time. The Guidebook also supports Calgary in our new economy. Last March, I was on the chairlift at Panorama Ski Resort, and as I stared out at the majestic snow-peaked moun-tain, I reflected on my fast-paced life. Despite many at-tempts to “slow down”, I realized it was going to take a change, so I made an internal cry for help.

The next day on the hill, I experienced a full-body col-lision with another skier, resulting in a fractured rib. It wasn’t long before I remembered my divine plea. Even through the pain with every breath, I couldn’t help but smile at the irony. A week later, Covid hit Calgary.

I think the Universe hit me twice, to make sure I wouldn’t resort back to my old ways. This is what happens when we don’t listen. We’re forced with the opportunity to make a change. Although it may be uncomfortable, it’s always a good thing in the end.

Perhaps the whole world has been given the same les-son; to stop and smell the coffee, to stop and listen to your child, to stop and tell your spouse you love him or her, to stop and tell your Creator “thank you”.

I’m sure each one of us has a Covid story to tell, about how it changed our lives. I have a few. So here is one of mine: every day during Covid, I would see droves of peo-ple outside my window walking their dogs. I thought to myself, “what a wonderful way to slow down”. A pet gets you out for a walk. A pet requests your undivided atten-tion. A pet shows you unconditional love.

So my family agreed to my request for a puppy, which took 6 months to arrive. And as of two weeks ago, I now have a West Highland Terrier puppy at home. He is teaching me patience (through potty training), but best of all, he is teaching me to slow down. With slow walks around the block (versus my usual power walk), where together, we stop and smell the trees.

Thank you, Universe, for the greatest gift I could have ever asked for.

Hello Calgary-Klein,

This month, we take a moment to pause and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can have the freedoms we enjoy today. This Remembrance Day will look different from previous years. We will not be able to gather in large groups due to COVID, but we will still be able to remember, and we must do so.

I am honoured to have two Legions in the riding of Calgary-Klein: the Chapelhow branch and the Jubilee branch. Both of these locations do amazing work in supporting the Veterans who gave so much for our country.

Alberta has made major contributions to Canada’s fighting forces. During World War I, seven of the 16 battalions came from Western Canada. Canada’s military continues to hold a strong presence around the world, helping to secure peace and democracy. Today, Alberta is home to six military bases, including the largest in the commonwealth – CFB Suffield.

For those men and women who have sacrificed so much, I am reminded that we live in one of the freest jurisdictions in the world. For this I am thankful for the service of the men and women who have sacrificed so much.

As we reflect and honour our veterans, I encourage you to donate to the Calgary Veterans Food Bank. So many groups have been affected this year by COVID-19, your donation is needed now more than ever.

In the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, no matter where you are, take a moment and pause. To those who served, lost their lives, and to those who continue to stand guard: we will remember.
