June 8 - New Moon Observing

Vance Ley was the Opener He reported I arrived at approximately 650 pm I was joined by Mike Fuge Edgar Fischer and Ron Hospelhorn who was accompanied by a guest whose name I didnrsquot get

We had a beautiful warm moonlit eve-ning Around midnight the moon was low enough that I was able to do some imaging in the small dome Mike worked with the Isengard all evening Ron worked on car-bon stars and I donrsquot know what Edgar did

Earlier in the evening Mike called me over to see something It turned out to be a small rattlesnake We attempted to catch him but we were delayed by the snake stick having been left in a tangle of hoes By the time Mike found it our friend was holed up under the bench on the east side of the main dome We agreed to leave

Under the DomeNotes from and about GNTO Jim Fordice

him alone and he (she) agreed to leave us alone

In the morning both Ron and Edgar were gone Mike was sacked out in the Ortega building and I slept in my truck Overall a very pleasant night

Everything in the imaging dome performed well and itrsquos now motorized Irsquove grown quite attached to the new motorization which rotates the dome by just pressing a button It makes keeping the scopeguide scope from being blocked by the dome much easier

June 29 - 3rd Quarter Moon Observing

I was the Opener Seven of us enjoyed the limited observing opportunities the skies presented

Eric Edwards and I arrived about 4 pm in order to do some maintenance work

Around sunset we were joined by Vance Ley and three Imaging Trainees (Brigitte de Saint Phalle Rick Vergas amp Alan Scott) and Kurt Sandquist (See separate article for more about this -Ed)

Eric was taking some wide-angle pictures I departed shortly after sunset After the imaging training session Alan and Rick departed while Brigitte did some photog-raphy Vance took advantage of the unex-pected clear sky to image NGC 7000 Vance closed the site at 645 am

GNTO Imaging Dome TrainingSaturday June 29th

By Vance Ley

I conducted a successful GNTO imaging dome training session on the night of Satur-day June 29

TAAS members attending included Alan Scott Brigitte de Saint Phalle and Rick Ver-gas and I believe everyone felt they got their ldquomoneyrsquos worthrdquo particularly since ndash of course ndash there was no charge

We experienced one hiccup with the newly motorized imaging dome the clockwise rotation using the remote hand controller wouldnrsquot work But we were able to oper-ate the rotation in both directions using the switch on the main control electronics Mike Molitor or I will have to look at the apparently faulty relay to see if the problem is caused by burned or dirty contacts or ldquootherrdquo

After the class was completed Alan and Rick departed while Brigitte did some photography I took advantage of an unexpectedly clear sky to image NGC 7000 the North American Nebula in Cygnus

Donrsquot forget that the GNTO Observing Field is avail-able for use by TAAS members anytime Check the TAAS website for the procedure to follow Contact me if you have any questions

As always check TAAS_Talk and the TAAS website for last-minute changes and updates GNTO events are open to all TAAS members and their guests

Gardner Colorado June 26-30

By Jim K (Kaminiski)

The 2019 Rocky MounTain STaR STaRe (RMSS) sponsored by the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society near Gardner CO drew more than 350 at-tendees (a record-breaker) including families (plus dogs)

TAAS was well represented including multi-year RMSS veterans Ed Juddo Roger and Linda Kennedy (hosting solar viewing) Steve Riegel (now of Colorado Springs) John Laning Fernando Torres and myself The accompanying photo shows part of the observing area where we set up

The days were hot (80s amp 90s) and very windy (20+ mph) yet the nights were essentially calm with cool tempera-tures in the 50s and 60s

The nights of Wednesday (26th) and Friday (28th) featured some of the darkest observing I have witnessed with SQM-L readings of ~220 (magni-tudes per square arc-second or MP-SAS) compared to GNTO of ~215 and my backyard of ~20) resulting in al-most 3-dimensional views of the Milky Way because of the many gradations of light Faint objects were readily seen if you could navigate through the many many stars visible in the sky

Thursday (27th) was not so good only ~218 MPSAS Some clouds were pres-ent during the day then dissipating at night but with very distant lightning and alternating bands of thick clouds and followed by the crystal clear skies on Friday night

A number of observers left on Saturday with light rain (sprinkles) in the after-noon and only a ldquopromiserdquo of clear skies late in the night

Daytime activities included kite fly-ing and (very limited height) rocket launches for children presentations on various astronomical and other topics the usual swap meet an ATM (Amateur Telescope Making) competition and raffles of astronomical gear as well as offsite sightseeing by the adventurous

If dry camping is your forte (ie bring your own water pack out all your trash) with the possibility of some very dark-sky observing then consider attending next yearrsquos RMSS

Stand-alone campers and RVs domi-nate the fields and it will be hot for tent users (as I know) Information will be developed for the June 2020 event and posted at httprmssorg

Earlier in the evening Mike called me over to see something It turned out to be a small rattlesnake We attempted to catch him but we were delayed by the snake stick having been left in a tangle of hoes By the time Mike found it our friend was holed up under the bench on the east side of the main dome We agreed to leave

him alone and he (she) agreed to leave us alone

The Official Newsletter of The Albuquerque Astronomical Society
