The
Looking Forward to a Big Family Reunion
My Grandparents, Eldora and Ike, lived in a big old house up on hill on the west side of Evansville that was built by his grandfather. You could look down from their back yard toward the Ohio River—where the community set off the annu-al fireworks display.
This meant that every 4thof July the whole family would descend on their house. There would be great aunts and uncles, cousins, neighbors, and long-time family friends. I knew I was related to just about everyone there somehow—but never tried to figure out all of the distant cousins once removed. Neighbors and friends would all arrive carrying lawn chairs and “carry in” dishes.
The old men would swap stories; the women would “catch up” and trade recipes. Inevitably one of the older boys (or one of their dads) would break out the fire crackers and bottle rockets. They would give us little kids sparklers or Mason jars for catching fireflies. Eventually we would all settle in looking down the hill over the garden to ooh and aah at the “big” fireworks.
Time marches on. The cottonwood trees grew so tall that they blocked the view. My grandparents and so many other attendees at those mid-summer gatherings are no longer alive. I catch glimpses of some of my cousins lives through Facebook these days—they have grandchildren of their own.
Dad tells me that the old house is being remodeled by its new owner.
As the 4th of July approaches, I’m reminded that one day we will all gather near another river for a family reunion. In July of 1864 Baptist Pastor Robert Lowry from Brooklyn penned these words:
Shall we gather at the river, Where bright angel feet have trod, With its crystal tide forever Flowing by the throne of God? Yes, we’ll gather at the river, The beautiful, the beautiful river; Gather with the saints at the river That flows by the throne of God. Through His life, death, and resurrection Jesus has given us the promise of a future family reunion at the river. Blessings and peace, Beth Ann

Featuring Dr. Peter Bellini & Rev. Tim Johnson
Pastor Beth Ann invites you to attend with her. This event will be especially good for prayer team members, leaders, and anyone interested in healing ministry.
Jesus explained his ministry by reading Isaiah 61:1: "The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is upon me, for the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that
captives will be released and prisoners will be freed."
Because of His life, death and resurrection our mourning can be turned into joy. We can move from lament to praise! In addition to altar ministry time with Tim & Dr. Bellini, sign up for personal prayer appointments with experienced intercessors led by Paula Shrock.
Please Register by July 10th! Pay at the door. (But if you don't attend, you are expected to mail a check. We are barely covering the cost of food with this registration fee!)

Parish Nursing— By Heather Platt
FORGIVENESS HAS A HEALTH CONNECTION
Forgiveness is a choice. We can choose to offer forgiveness to
someone who has wronged us in a big or small way by deciding to offer compassion and empathy.
We have all been in a situation where we were cut-off by an aggressive driver and
experienced the mind body response called fight or flight. Our body released epinephrine and our heartrate, respiratory rate and blood pressure increased in response to a stressor. Typically, in this scenario, we fume about the rude driver for a few minutes then let it go. We then notice our heartrate slowing and a feeling of calmness return as we relax and
become more comfortable.
Now imagine having someone intentionally assault you or a loved one. This results in fear, anger and resentment with later thoughts of revenge and bitterness. Remember the fight
or flight response we mentioned earlier? Although the stress response is diminished over time, when we have sustained emotional distress we have an increased level of a hormone called cortisol. This negatively affects our bodies with an increased heartrate and blood pressure, lack of sleep and changes our immune system response. Over time, unresolved conflict and anger can go deep. It leads to physical conditions such as weight gain, heart disease, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, body discomfort, anxiety and depression.
Making the conscious effort to forgive someone who has wronged us does not mean we approve of the
behavior or action. What it means is that we recognize the value of forgiveness. We have considered the terms behind the anger, are choosing to acknowledge and release the negative emotion. We are choosing to have some level of understanding and have decided not to allow the hurt or define our life.
Releasing that resentment allows is to embrace the future and move forward. Forgiveness calms stress levels and results in improved physical and emotional health.
This new awareness enhances and deepens our relationship with God. It frees us from the guilt of not being good and allows is to be the person we want to be. Ideas and answers come to us at the right moment, we find life more enjoyable and it allows us to reach our potential.
Forgiveness allows us to embrace peace, hope, gratitude and joy.
Take care and let it go,
Heather

With a smile we were able to cancel the finance meeting June 18, not because of attendance, but because
God has truly blessed us, and we simply did not have a reason to bring everyone together. We have a very nice balance in the checking account and all bills are currently paid or paid ahead. We never want to “rest on our laurels” in our financial ministry, but sometimes, it is just nice to relax for a short period of time. Blessing to all members of First Church! Long Story Short Copies of Long Story Short by Josh McNall are available on the information table. Suggested

July 2019
Summer is in full swing. The children are enjoying a lot of outdoor activities and field trips. The three oldest preschool classes have enjoyed the splash pad and a picnic at Houston Park. Each of the Zoo Crew classes have experienced trips, too. Alligators (Ms. Cora’s group) have gone to the Little Turtle Waterway, a visit to the Mayor, and the Radio Station. The children had the opportunity to be on the radio! They learned a lot and had lots of fun. The Bobcats have gone places such as the Splash Pad, Holland Dealer, movies and Houston Park. They are looking forward to upcoming trips at the Post Office, Bowling, Dairy Farm and Dominos. The Cheetahs had the opportunity to sell Lemonade at the Celebrate Logansport Celebration downtown. They have also gone to the movies, Historical Society and Freedom Park. They have Bowling, France Park and Trails throughout the month of July.
The curriculum includes 2 weeks of a Water Theme and 2 weeks of a Science theme with review weeks in between. LCM has Professor Steve “The Science Guy” scheduled to come on August 5th at 10 AM to give a presentation to the whole facility.
The LCM 1st Kids Club will meet every second and fourth Sunday of the month from 10:30-12:00. The children do not have to attend FUMC or be enrolled in LCM to attend.
It is free of charge and welcome to all children 4-12 years of age. Please contact the office if you need transportation. Hope to see you there!
We have officially obtained Level 1 on Paths to Quality and will be reviewed for Level 3 by July. We are excited to complete this goal.

Books of the Month
This month we’re highlighting two American authors who possess strength, courage and godly wisdom in the midst of some of life’s greatest challenges and heartbreak.
Heaven By Joni Eareckson Tada
Not merely in spite of but actually because of her own suffering, Joni is able to give to us her keen vision of heaven’s joy. - Elizabeth Elliot
Let’s Roll! Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage By Lisa Beamer- Wife of 9-11 Hero Todd Beamer
In Let’s Roll! Todd’s wife, Lisa, reveals what really happened on that ill-fated flight, as well as poignant glimpses of a genuine American Hero. It’s no wonder that, through this unpretentious homemaker and mother, an entire nation can find hope. Find inspiration. Find strength. Both books are available for check out in the church library.
