Quick Notes….

Bill Taylor’s Gift By Rudy Ryan

While no longer active in the dulci-mer playing world, Bill was an ac-

complished professional musician

who played guitar, mandolin, and

dulcimer. In addition, he was a

singer, songwriter, and arranger. He taught at dulci-

mer festivals like Kentucky Music Week and oth-

ers. Besides this, he built really nice dulcimers for many years. His brand of dulcimers was well re-

spected across America.

But besides his musical expertise and accomplish-ments he was a great supporter of the KADC. We have many of his arrangements and now many more due to the generosity of Bill and his wife Barbara. He encouraged me when I was new to the KADC. We could always ask Bill questions and he was very helpful. He taught classes at our meetings and participated in the jams just like all the other members although he could play so incredibly well. His personality invited people to like him. He had a great way of teaching that made everyone feel good about asking questions and receiving his answer. I felt very fortunate to have known him during my early years with the dulcimer. June Goforth and others knew him much longer than I did. I heard only posi-tive comments from them about Bill. An article on Bill was included in the “Dulcimer Play-ers News” on August 12, 2012, volume 31 number 3. https://issuu.com/dulcimerplayersnewsinc/docs/31-3watermarked You can read the entire article be-ginning on page 28 and turn the pages like a paper copy. We now have a separate section of our KADC web site dedicated to him and his music. There are 125 pieces of music there. This is an amazing collection and will be worthy of playing and studying for many years to come. Many thanks to Barbara and Bill for this very generous donation to our club. Editor’s Note: Many thanks also to Rudy Ryan who spent a lot of time scanning each piece of music to make PDF’s in order to have them added to the club’s website.

Here is a list of the new tunes that have been added to the club music page. More music for us to play!

If you go to open jams, these might be helpful as well. Hope you enjoy!

A Gift from Sweden...continued 12 sympathetic vibration (tuned to all 12 chromatic notes in an octave) or reso-nance strings. There are about 37 wood-en keys which slide under the strings. Each key has a tangent which stops or frets a string to make a particular pitch. A short bow is played with the right hand and the keys are played with the left hand. Even though most of us are not familiar with the nyckelharpa, there are about 10,000 players in Sweden today. At least four different versions of the instrument are currently in use. A First-Timer’s Report by Christy Bock

This year, I decided to attend Kentucky Music Week (KMW) for the first time. For those of you who are veteran players, I’m sure you know all the ins-and-outs of attending, so this article is intended for those who have never attended and are thinking about doing so. First of all, you need to make your hotel reservations well in advance. There are two sponsor ho-tels – the Hampton Inn and the General Nelson Inn (Best Western). However, there are other hotels in the area. There are also two campgrounds if you have a camper or like to camp. The Old Kentucky Home campground is adjacent to the Old Kentucky Home State Park. The White Acres Campground seems to be where most of the attendees stay and where the nighttime jams are held. I personally stayed at a little mom-and-pop motel, Americas Inn, which was older and not fancy at all. However, it was clean and well maintained and inexpensive. The Hampton Inn will be accepting reservations for next year in August. The second daunting task is to pick your classes. This part took me several days and I changed my mind multiple times before deciding on classes. The classes lead by “big names” fill up fast. I signed up for my classes at the end of February, and I was glad I did because I got all the classes I requested. You can sign up for as many or few classes as you like (1-5) in a variety of instruments. There are hammered dulcimer, lap dulcimer, baritone dulcimer, psaltery, guitar, banjo, ukulele, tin whistle, native American flute, folk dance, singing, painting, photography, basket weaving and probably more that I’ve missed. Classes are also offered in a variety of levels from raw beginner to advanced. Don’t worry if you make a mistake! I signed up for a class that I thought I could handle, and when I got there on Monday, I realized it was too advanced for me. The staff helped me easily change into another class. I did 3 dulcimer classes, a beginning ukulele class and folk dancing class. I had a lot of fun and since I didn’t take all dulcimer I didn’t get burned out. Make sure you bring a notebook or folder for all your handouts. You’ll also want to make sure you purchase your KMW t-shirt and/or tote bag when you register for classes. They did have some extras, but those ran out fast. I would also recommend purchasing the lunch plan as well. It really saves time and money. Also, pay attention to the “theme” days when you are packing. Each day of the week has a theme and some people go all out in costumes. Don’t worry if that’s not your thing – there are plenty of people dressed in normal clothing. But, it’s fun to get involved. When you arrive on Sunday evening, you’ll need to check in at the high school where classes are offered. This year it was Nelson County High School, but my understanding is that this was a change. There is a first-time attendee meeting to answer any questions you may have. I don’t think this meeting is essential unless you have specific questions, as it just went through all the information sent you after registration. After that, there is a jam in the gym with several hundred people. Definitely something to experience. Most evenings there are activities in which you can participate. On Monday, there is a cake walk and big jam at the White Acres Campground. On Tuesday and Thursday, there are concerts by the instructors. There are also jams at the Hampton Inn and General Nel-son, the campground and other various places. You may want to ask an experienced participant about jams. Some are “turtle” jams, some geared more toward hammered dulcimers and some are “all-come” jams. I went to the jam at the campground on Monday evening and it was fun! There were all different levels and instruments. If you’re not a night owl (I’m NOT), people also gather in the gym during the free times during the day to play together.

Don’t feel like you have to go to all the evening activities – it’s a long week and you need to make sure you get rest! One day, I decided to drive out to the Bernheim Forest (about 20 minutes away) to see the Forest Giant Sculptures. Sadly, most of the bourbon distiller-ies close for tours around 4:00, so I didn’t get to do that. But I did learn that the Barton Distillery is the only one with a free tour. The others are all paid. Most of downtown Bardstown closes early, except a few restaurants. So, if you want to visit shops or historical buildings, you need to plan accordingly. There are also vendors during the day selling everything from picks, to jewelry, to instruments. There is also a “dulcimer doctor” set up so if you have a problem with your instrument (break a string, etc.) you can easily get it fixed. Most instructors have booths, selling their books and CDs as well. A lot of those booths operate on the “Honor System” where you leave cash in a box or envelope, so you may want to make sure you have cash on hand if you plan on purchasing. Overall, I had a really great time at KMW. I went alone, but within 20 minutes of being there I discovered familiar faces. Everyone was super friendly, and I made new friends while learning some fantastic music. I will definitely be attending again! I hope you consider attending

as well. Next year’s KMW will be July 21-27. You can find more information at https://www.kentuckymusicweek.com/index.html
