RESIDENTSPOTLIGHT: Peg NayduchPeg was born inLouisville, Kentucky, the middle child offour to a home makerand insurance broker. While she grew up and attended school in Kentucky, her interest in painting and art developed. Peg quickly moved to Ohio where she began studying Fashion Art at the Art School of Cincinnati. Her artistic background caused her to travel to many destinations and live in many places, from New York, and Boston on the East Coast to California on the West. One of Peg’s favorite memories is a six month long trip through Europe, which she took with a friend at the age of 21. Together, they went to ten different countries and visited a friend in Germany. Upon her return, Peg wanted to move to New York, and as luck would have it, she met a couple back in her hometown who were headed that way and they let her tag along.Peg’s studies of Fashion Art lead her to create newspaper ads for fashion shops. Eventually she began working for an Ad Agency in New York as the only female artist. She enjoyed the people she worked with and loved the work she did. After working for the Ad Agency, Peg went on to be an Administrative Assistant for Harvard Business School. This job had its own set of perks. She liked working with the students, and she was able to feed her passions by taking art and history classes.

Peg has three children, Ross, Dimitri, and Suzanne, and six grandchildren. She still loves to paint and draw, with horses as her special interest (must be from her days in Kentucky). She has lived in Fort Collins since December and has enjoyed participating in word games at New Mercer Commons.

A FEW REMINDERS:As the weather is getting nice, it’s great to get outside, especially for a walk in our wonderful Sculpture Park! If you decide to go on a walk, ask staff for sunscreen, bring a water bottle, and it’s always a good idea to let someone know you are going out! Safe and healthy journeys to everyone this summer! As clothing comes in for the change of the seasons, please make sure you turn any new clothing items in to be labeled before wearing and having them washed! Thank you!

DID YOU KNOW?As the summer season begins, it’s fun to look back at how Fort Collins residents celebrated before social media, radio and television. According to the History of Larimer County volume 11, and Barbara Fleming who is the history writer for The Coloradoan, a tent was set up for one week in late July or early August at Lincoln Park. Residents were treated to lectures, theater, magic shows, and musical performers. There was even a costume parade for children. Towns all over the United States looked forward to when this event came to their area.National Ice Cream Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in July. This public law was established in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan. For 2018, this American tradition lands on July 15th. Many countries claim that ice cream was invented in their country. Likely, the ice cream enjoyed this month was invented in China during the 17th century. Ice cream was brought to the American colonies from Europe and enjoyed by the upper class. The five most popular flavors of ice cream are vanilla, mint chocolate chip, pralines ‘n cream, Oreocookies ‘n cream, and chocolate.
