Our Deacon-Rev. Sherry

July 1 marks another milestone in our Journey to becoming one annual confer-ence in Michigan. On July 1st, the former districts of the Detroit and West Michi-gan conferences no longer exist and the new districts of the Michigan Confer-ence are fully functional. Our district is called the Heritage District and includes churches across the central southern part of the mitten. Our new District Super-intendent is the Rev. Elizabeth Hill. She is a good leader and I hope you all will get to meet her. (She and I were in a couple of seminary classes together.)

The Heritage District office is located at Westside UMC in Ann Arbor and the Administrative Assis-tant is Dar McGee, same person and location as our former district. It is exciting to be a part of this transition and creating a new conference that is more efficient and focused on our mission of creating disciples for Jesus Christ. Blessings to all from the beautiful, sunny, and peaceful shores of Mullett Lake where I am enjoying some family and respite time. - Rev. Sherry P.S. It’s not too late for camp!

Trustee News

Have you noticed that the church bell is ringing again? Time, and Mother Nature have taken its toll on the bell, so the Verdin Bell Company was contracted to revive it. A technician from the Grand Rapids area arrived two weeks ago and determined that the controls were okay, but the bell (which is 26 feet above ground level) needed some minor repair work. In less than an hour (on a tall scissors lift he had it working again. He revealed that the bell (which is excellent quality) was installed by his brother back in 1999 when the church expansion was in progress. This bell was moved from the original Methodist Church on Union Street in 1967 and is now ready for many more years of service. Phil Harris Church Trustee

Please Consider

Delivering Meals on Wheels

Please consider delivering Meals on Wheels. It’s easy and gratifying!

Every five weeks MUMC supplies drivers for Meals on Wheels Delivery in the Milford area. The route has 20-

25 meals to deliver and takes about 2 hours. Meals are picked up at the Milford Senior Center at 10am. A

print out of the deliveries and a map are supplied.

The clients are very appreciative of the delivered meals. Besides the meal delivery, this also provides a daily

check that the clients are “OK.” Those who deliver meals find it to be a rewarding experience.

If you have any questions about Meals on Wheels or are willing to be added to the list of Meals on Wheels

drivers at MUMC, please let me know.

Dave Ebert, MUMC Meals on Wheels Coordinator, [email protected]

Please: consider volunteering! Drivers Needed

Interested in Church Membership?

A new orientation will begin on July 22 at 11:15 a.m. Please speak with the clergy or register with the

The Michigan Conference of The United Methodist Church

The Michigan Conference, officially being founded on January 1, 2019, is the new organization

formed from the Detroit Annual Conference and the West Michigan Annual Conference. The

Michigan Conference represents more than 840 local churches and over 130,000 members

throughout Michigan. The mission of the conference is to, "Create Disciples of Jesus Christ for

the Transformation of the World" and will be achieved by equipping the local church with Christ Centered

Mission and Ministry, Bold and Effective Leaders, and Vibrant Congregations.

United Methodist Church Policy on Human Sexuality

Our denomination sets policy at a General Conference, normally every four years. A special General

Conference has been called for February 23-26, 2019, in St. Louis, MO, to address questions about the

church and human sexuality.

Each congregation sends members to annual conference. Each annual conference elects General

Conference delegates. The number of delegates is based on the number of church members in each

conference. There will be 864 delegates at the special General Conference in St. Louis, representing annual

conferences from around the world.

At the 2016 General Conference, the delegates could not agree on related legislation, so they asked the

Council of Bishops to recommend a way forward. The bishops formed The Commission on the Way Forward,

a group with diverse views, to pray together, study options together, and make a recommendation to the

Council of Bishops. They asked the church to be in prayer as we navigate this issue that is so often divisive.

The Commission on the Way Forward recommended a plan called The One Church Plan. It would leave

questions of LGBTQ clergy up to annual conferences and same-gender marriage up to local churches.

In May, 2018, a majority of United Methodist bishops endorsed the One Church Plan. That endorsement

does not change church policy. It does not become denominational policy unless approved by vote of the

General Conference.

In May and June, 2018, some annual conferences voted on related resolutions. These annual conference

resolutions are also nonbinding. They express the majority opinion of a particular annual conference, but they

don’t change church law. Some annual conferences endorsed The One Church Plan. Others called for

stronger enforcement of the denomination’s current prohibitions against same-gender weddings and “self-

avowed practicing” gay clergy.

From July, 2018, until February, 2019, there will be opportunities for prayer and discussion around these

policy decisions. Our bishop will host information and discussion forums, and in the fall of 2018, I plan to offer

similar opportunities for our congregation.

In February, 2019, decisions about the denomination’s policy will be made by vote of the 864 lay and clergy

delegates at the Special General Conference in St. Louis.

Africa University Latest News

AU, our United Methodist university in Zimbabwe, thanked us for giving 100% of our apportioned share

toward the support of their mission in 2017.

A graduate of AU is now the leader of The United Methodist Church in Burundi. The east Africa nation has

been highly divided, and so was the church, with two leaders of opposing factions. A reconciliation team has

worked with the two factions, and both sides have affirmed the newly elected leader, Rev. Jean Ntahoturi.

We pray the uniting of the church may be part of the healing of the nation.

The Baltimore Washington Conference recently raised $330,000 for Africa University to begin a sports

complex on the AU campus, starting with an outdoor swimming pool. Construction began in March, 2018.

Retirement of Our Missionaries

For many years Milford United Methodist Church has supported the missionary efforts of Ut Van and Karen

Vo To, who served in Vietnam, and Daniel and Rachel Gabler who served in Africa. After many years of

serving as missionaries both couples have decided to retire at this time. Both couples have served with love

and compassion giving of their time and talent.

Over the years they have visited us here at MUMC and shared their stories, their trials and their triumphs.

We join with the many other churches that supported their efforts, and wish them the best in their new

“civilian” life and God’s continued blessings.

United Methodist Women Rummage Sale

A B I G thank you to all who helped, in any way, at the United Methodist Women’s Rummage Sale in May. There was a great selection of items for the shoppers and we still had plenty remaining to have Purple Heart and Right to Life pick up. Thanks for all the fantastic help setting up, packing, tearing down and putting everything back to normal for Sunday. At this time, the grand total received is $2,938.05. Ten percent of that is given back to the church. The remaining is given to the many missions that the UMW support locally and worldwide. Blessings to you all.

Envy…not a fruit of the Spirit and certainly not good for my soul.

I must confess that I am feeling just a tinge envious as I write this article.

My husband just informed me that he may be travelling to Australia two different times over the next year in addition to a trip to Singapore.

Visiting Australia is on my bucket list and has been since the Crocodile Dundee movies came out way back when…

I am excited for him as this is a definite continuation of a project he is working on for Jaguar/Land Rover and means they like what he is doing on this project and as a small business owner, that is meaningful.

So, just pray for my soul….ok? And that maybe I can join him on one of those trips….

Thanks! You all are the BEST!

Happy Summer!
