Referendum on the Neighbourhood Plan for Ide

The final stage in approving the Neighbourhood Plan - a village referendum - will be held on Thursday 26 July 2018, in Ide Memorial Hall. The polling station will be open from 7am to 10 pm. The outcome of the poll will be determined by a simple majority of those casting their vote. There is no minimum turn out required for a result to stand, but a large turnout would provide strong evidence of the village’s opinion in any future planning decisions. Polling cards will be sent out by Teignbridge District Council. You will be able to cast your vote in person, by post or by proxy. If the result of the referendum is for the Neighbourhood Plan, it will be adopted by Teignbridge DC as a “made” plan, and will by law have to be taken into consideration in all future planning decisions relating to Ide Parish.

Safe Routes for Ide The group “Safe Routes for Ide” has produced a report following their survey of the residents of the traffic restricted areas including Balls Farm Road and Doctors Walk about the safety of pedestrians and cyclists along these roads. A copy of the full report can be found on the website. www.idevillage.org.uk/balls-farm-road/ There seems to be some confusion over the signs at the entrance to Doctors Walk. Ide Parish Council have discussed this with the police and there is some clarification for this on the above website address.

The next Parish Council meeting will be held in Ide Memorial Hall on Wednesday 25 July 2018 at 7.30pm. If you have an issue you would like the council to discuss, please contact the chairman or another parish councillor. Requests for items to be considered for inclusion on the agenda should be made at least 14 days before the date of the meeting. The first ten minutes of a Parish Council meeting are open to the public to raise possible items for future meetings; or to comment on items on the agenda for that meeting.

The next meeting of the Planning Committee is Wednesday 25 July 2018 at 6pm at The Hub unless otherwise advised. To view planning applications, go to www.teignbridge.gov.uk/planning and search using the address or reference number. Meetings of the Planning Committee are held in public and you are welcome to attend. There is time allocated at the start of the meetings for public participation.

SAFE ROUTES FOR IDE

"As a resident who lives on Doctors Walk I regularly experience traffic speeding along the end of my drive. This is pretty harrowing especially as my children are at an age when they’d like a little more independence and either walk to Ide shop or call on friends in the village on their own.

My husband is a wheel chair user and in the past when wheeling out of our driveway onto the lane to reach the other side he has had several close shaves with traffic speeding along. This in turn has knocked his confidence considerably and therefore has reduced the number of times he’s decided to leave the house.

One consequence of the heavy snow we had in March was that traffic could

no longer come along the lane. This gave us the opportunity to don our snow gear and amble down the traffic-free lane towards Sainsbury’s, safe in the knowledge that the children could run ahead without the risk of being hit by a car. As the children ran off I could hear peals of laughter fill the air as they pelted one another with snow balls. For the first time ever I felt relaxed and happy as my children were frolicking carefree in the snow and doing what children should do. I was not the anxious, nervous parent I usually am when walking along the lane. "

Safe routes for Ide is a community group campaigning positively to improve walking cycling and riding routes around Ide. You can make contact though facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/safe.routes.for.ide/ or Pete Bishop or Andy Swain on [email protected] .

We will meet in the poachers on Tuesday 3 July at 7:30 pm.

********************************************************************************************* Thank you............ My & I daughter would like to say a very big thank you to all of the people who came along to the Bristol Children’s Hospital charity coffee morning at the Twisted Oak on the 19th May. We managed to raise a total of £253.64 - which we spent on lots of new toys & stationery for the ‘brave cupboard’ on the Renal Ward.

SETTLEMENT BOUNDARY REVIEW

As part of the Teignbridge District Council Local Plan review, there are a series of Public Exhibitions and Roadshows in which Ide's Settlement Boundary is an item for review. This review takes into consideration possible changes to the settlement boundary as a result of the Neighbourhood Plan but also considers changes that would affect householders within the village. You can find details of these proposals on the Ide website www.idevillage.org.uk or via www.teignbridge.gov.uk/localplanreview

The local exhibition takes place on Wednesday, 27th June, at Tedburn St Mary Village Hall between 12 noon and 8pm.

IDE WALK CARDS

These are small (A6) illustrated laminated cads, one for each of the six walks around Ide. They are easy to put in your pocket and follow the map and notes of interest. Pictures of local businesses are shown and the walks compliment the 3-fold Ide Walks leaflet (free) - sponsored by Ide Parish Council. Producion and printing of the walk cards has been sponsored by Devon CC's Locality Budget Fund and Teignbridge DC's Councillor's Community Fund, for which we are very grateful.

When available, hopefully during August 2018, they will be sold in the

Community Shop at £1 each or £5 for the series of 6. Proceeds in support of the Shop. We hope you enjoy using them or sending them to friends and family. And special thanks to Ben (GAK Design), Becky and Minutemanpress for their help and support for the project.

IDE COMMUNITY SHOP AND POST OFFICE

Well it looks as though summer has finally arrived and decided to bless us all with fine weather. With the great weather and lighter evenings I’m sure you might be thinking of having a BBQ. Did you know that we stock an excellent range of sausages and burgers from local producers? We also have bread rolls, coleslaw, guacamole and hummus, all to compliment your al fresco dining experience. We have over 10 types of cheese for you to choose from along with a very well stocked beer and wine section. Everything you could want for a great summer feast.

If you are thinking of entertaining for a large group of friends or family, don’t forget that we can order many items for you personally, on a date convenient to you, with local collection from your community shop…..just ask.

Have you tried the strawberries we have in the shop at the moment? We are fortunate to have a very local supplier in Balls Farm. They truly do taste like strawberries used to, so juicy and sweet. In the fridge you will find cream and ice cream to add to this summer treat.

Summer holidays are fast approaching, did you know you can purchase your foreign currency here at your local Post Office…. Travelling in this country, don’t worry you can also withdraw £ sterling too! Our stationery shelves have plenty to keep little ones happy on long journeys, colouring books and pens and magazines too.

AGM - We recently held our AGM in the school hall. The meeting was very well attended with both local villagers and some people from neighbouring villages coming too. Thank you to everyone who came to show your support. We hope you enjoyed the fish and chips! Mark Thomas was the proud winner of the luxury hamper, well done Mark.

We would like to know what you think about your local community shop and

post office, so we have decided to ask for your input. You will find a suggestions and comments box in the shop along with some slips for you to let us know what you think, good or bad! We would like to know what you like most about the shop. Is there a product you would like to see stocked? If you don’t use the shop at the moment, why not? What might help you to decide to shop local? Please do let us know, we are here for you.

IDE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH The HUB@Ide

Download:

Download is a Youth group which runs once a month for children in Y3 and up. It has over 50 children on its register and we are getting about 30 kids every month. The kids love the tuckshop, the games, the fun and socialising with their friends. There is a 5 min ‘half-time chat’ during which we discuss a Christian message. To find out more please get in touch…

All-Age Service: Our All-Age service is held on 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month from 5pm. It really is designed for all ages, so everyone can participate, and it is a more interactive and lively experience of church than our traditional service. There are opportunities to ask questions, get involved with craft or demonstrations, or to just watch from the side. Our aim is to be inclusive, to be a place of love and joy. We love getting together and sharing our faith with each other, worshipping and learning about Jesus. 6.

Isaiah 41:10 10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Just like a child feels safe with

their Mummy or Daddy, God tells us

repeatedly in the Bible not to fear,

because He is with us. When we are

scared, anxious or worried, we can

call on Him to give us peace.

We’re very excited to be welcoming Helen Sherlock, our new curate, and her family. Their first Sunday with us will be the 1st July. Helen will spend 2 months getting to know us as a “licensed lay worker” before being ordained at Exeter Cathedral on Saturday 15th September. The service is at 3pm. She’d love to see supporters from our Mission Community there. If you do go, please be ready for a very crowded event. There are 10 people being ordained. Each will bring friends from their previous parishes, as well as supporters from the place where they’ll be working. A small number of reserved tickets have been made available to families, but the rest of us will have to get our seats on a first come first served basis.

Helen’s Sunday commitments will see her attending and leading worship in the 3 churches of the Mission Community on Sunday mornings. And in the afternoon she’ll be at Unlimited Church. Do remember that she has commitments at Unlimited Church, so we won’t see as much of her as we might want to. And do pray for her as she divides her time between the two focuses of her work.

Finally, as this edition is published, we’re very close to interviewing for a Children’s and Families’ worker, and for a Youth Worker, jobs which were advertised here last month. So we pray and hope that we’ll be welcoming new faces to our team in September.

TODDLERS - meets on Tuesday mornings during term time in Ide School hall from 9.30am to 11am. The children have a chance to play together and the adults can chat over a cup of tea or coffee.

IDE MEMORIAL HALL

We are delighted to announce that we have been granted some further money towards the refurbishment of Ide Memorial Hall in addition to the generous donation of £500 from Ide Aloud raised from their Birthday Concert. Curtain material has been viewed and it is hoped that we will have curtains in the hall in the not too distant future, which will reduce the echo and make it easier when slides are shown.

Decisions now have to be made regarding a new wooden floor, storage cupboards and new furniture, etc. When we have arrived at detailed costings for such items we will be able to receive the promised grant money from Bernard Sunley and also from a DCC "Investing in Devon" Grant. We are most grateful for the grants which we have already received from Teignbridge, DCC, Viridor and Coastal Waste, which have transformed our very dated hall and made it fit for the 21st century.

IDE SUMMER FETE 2018

Traditionally, the June fete was organised and run solely by St. Ida’s and was known as the church fete and whilst all the initial planning and organisation are still carried out by church members, the occasion has become a truly community affair and we are SO grateful for all the people too numerous to mention who contributed to make this year’s fete one of the best ever.

Our thanks go to all those who lent and erected marquees and gazebos on

Friday evening and Saturday morning; to the bellringers who heralded the afternoon’s events; to Mike Partridge , the vicar for opening the proceedings and judging the wheelbarrows; to Judi Spiers who compered the show in her inimitable fashion; to Ide School maypole dancers without whom a wonderful tradition would be lost; to Tricia Wills for running the popular dog show; to all the stallholders; and finally all those involved in the Teas, the BBQ and the Bar whose sustenance gave adults and children alike the strength to throw eggs and tug on the rope at the end of the proceedings.

We were blessed with perfect weather and we raised approximately £2,000 to be shared between the church and Hospicecare (our chosen charity this year). We are already looking ahead to 2019 and would always welcome any fresh ideas and support to progress this very special village day.

IDE TWINNING ASSOCIATION

And so another Ide Twinning Trip has now been completed, with 18 or so of us being hosted in our twinned village(s) near Caen in Normandy. It was good, very good. There was a moment, we all agreed, when some sort of perfection of life occurred; sat in a large garden, surrounded by lush Normandy countryside, in the company of fellow Europeans both English and French, eating lovely locally-produced BBQ sausages, supping a little beer, and all in glorious sunshine, with us under shady trees.

And there were outings; Saturday morning saw us visit the nearby town of Argences, beautiful, we gathered by the clear bright waters of a water mill, and then off for a visit to the historic site where Guillaume le batard/William the Bastard/William the Conqueror won his first battle, by which he established himself as the 20 year old ruler of Normandy. A close run thing - had he lost the course of English history would’ve been different, for he later conquered the English, citing some fairly dubious right to do so, then handed out the stolen lands to those fellow Normans who fought with him. The result is that even now it’s just a small group of people, descended from those Norman barons, who own the vast majority of land in this island of ours.

After a lovely picnic we were then off to a local vineyard. There aren’t many vineyards this far north in France, although the ‘changement climatique’ will no doubt be altering that (and rendering a Rhone valley red something from history). The vineyard visit will live long in the memory of those who were present . . . a little piece of Twinning history . . . . but for all the wrong reasons. Mr Proprietor/Guide was an odd fish, who went into great depth regarding the history of his site and more specifically the ‘terroir’ . . . which is defined by the OED as ‘The complete natural environment in which a particular wine is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate’. Ah ‘le terroir’, if we heard the words once we heard them ten x ten times. It was hot, we got fidgety; we found it interesting for a bit, then less so, but hey ho we had the wine tasting to look forward to. And we did get to taste his wines. I’d say more sniff than taste, and we were er um underwhelmed by the results of our tasting.

On Saturday evening there was a lovely sit down meal, nice wine, dancing.....

Sunday morning, some free time for shopping, or a walk with hosts, or for those on t’committee a rendezvous with the Canteloup-Cleville twinning committee, then the lovely BBQ-picnic described earlier.

Sunday afternoon we had a visit to the town of Falaise, where we visited the castle there, birthplace of Guillaume le Batard. The castle was wonderful, full of atmosphere, and delightfully cool on a hot and sunny afternoon.

Early Monday saw us leave our lovely French hosts, always sad, but then, it’s nice to get home isn’t it?

11.

Oh and ex-chairman Pete, arriving 36 hours ahead of the rest of the party, pedalled round in 11 km sponsored squircles from 4pm Thursday to 4pm Friday, clocking up 564 kilometres = 350 miles, or from Ide to Carlisle. As someone said ‘impressive but a bit silly’ . . . which is a valid opinion. But anyway, c. £1200 was raised for Exeter Mencap + a French international charity, so that’s all good and many many thanks to those who sponsored me. I was a bit tired at the end, having pedalled for about 21.5 hours of the 24, all those short stops for food, drink, chat, coffee etc.....

Don’f forget – the evening of Saturday 14th of July – the Village BBQ-on- The-Green ! BBQ! Drinks ! Look out for posters in due course.

Changes to bus routes in our county are continuing to happen, but now it has happened in the Ide area and people are starting to take notice. But will this change your opinion of this vital community asset? It is now really worth considering the Ide park and ride. Frequent, convenient and a modern way for you to travel from A to B, Old buses and a dated timetable is not acceptable for a forward thinking rural community.

IDE SHOW 2018

Ide Show takes place on Sunday 16th September, 2018. We’re hoping it’ll be our best yet, with a wider range of categories involving many aspects of village life.

There will be all the usual opportunities for fruit and vegetable growers, flower arrangers and jam and cake makers – but this year we are also having sections for photography, painting and handicraft. We know the village has lots of talented people and we hope they might be persuaded to enter and share a little of their work with the rest of us.

We willll also be increasing the number of children’s categories – with art and lego modelling joining the other popular sections.

Proceeds from this year’s event will be shared with the two big funding projects in the village – Weir Meadow and the Community Orchard.

Watch out for more details closer to the date! 13. Mark Thomas

JUBILEE CLUB

Dr.Todd Gray’s visits to the Jubilee Club are always extremely popular and his latest talk, St Martin’s Island, was totally fascinating. Todd began by telling us about his involvement in the dreadful Royal Clarence Hotel fire on 28 October 2016. Having arrived in Cathedral Yard at the request of BBC Spotlight’s Hamish Marshall on Friday morning, Todd found himself doing interviews for BBC TV and radio, as well as ITV and the rest of the world’s media, over the next three days. In fact he lost count after 50!

He was also able to advise the Fire Brigade on the construction of the hotel and adjacent buildings, and even had to go to the cathedral library to photo copy historic plans of the area as, due to cuts, the council had destroyed theirs!

The second part of Todd’s talk covered the aftermath of the fire, and its effect on the forty-two buildings which make up St Martin’s Island. This term seems to have come about as a result of the fire and covers the area from St Martin’s Lane to Broadgate - the two passages into Cathedral Yard from High Street. By a strange coincidence the fire actually replicated a similar disaster in 1881 which was so big that it threatened all the buildings in this area. It is pleasing to note that all these buildings survived the blitz without damage.

One of the major problems for the fire service was that most of the buildings in the High St were built of materials highly suitable for the spread of fire, and consequently the firefighters had not only to deal with the Royal Clarence but many of the High Street shops which backed on to it. Todd was later able to explore several of them and make some amazing discoveries. The function room of the Clarence turned out to be a banqueting hall, in fact a little Guildhall, and some of the foundation stones dated back to 1250-1350. Tudor panelling was found, including a peacock design panel. Panels of a similar period were discovered in the premises of Laura Ashley complete with a painting of St George and the dragon and a medieval toilet! Damage to the Costa Coffee building revealed the arch braced medieval roof of the only hall of that period outside the Cathedral Close.

It was a totally enthralling afternoon and I am sure that members will look at the High Street shops very differently in future.

Flowers were presented to Mary to mark a special birthday.

WEST TOWN FARM NEWS

Open Farm Sunday was a lovely day with over 300 people through the doors (and that’s not counting the children). We fed the sheep, searched for critters in the stream, listened to stories around the fire and enjoyed our tasty organic burgers from the BBQ. I hope people left knowing a bit more about the farm!

We think our biggest selling point should be that our cows are fed purely on grass. We don’t over work the land, nor do we use any nasty chemicals. We should all be looking closer at what we are eating and where it comes from. We try to encourage shopping locally, buying organic products and cooking with vegetables that are currently in season. We have a lot of amazing growers, farmers and shops around us: Shillingford Organics, Real Food Store, Boathouse Bakery and many more. Let’s utilise what we’ve got!

We’ve had 9 new calves born at West Town Farm in recent weeks and I've managed to miss each one! But all are healthy and mothers’ instinct has kicked in perfectly. I love watching the calves strolling about the field together in groups...they just walk underneath the electric wire and eat where they want! Little rebels!

D’arts fest takes place on the farm again next month on the 7th/8th July. It’s a lovely event for people with learning disabilities and their families/carers. We love hosting this event and have everything crossed for a lovely sunny weekend.

Plus, it’s our first wedding of the season. Love is in the air!

With this time of year comes the usual battle against flies. We cover the animals in citronella and keep them in fields with a good breeze. It can give you quite a fright when walking along a farm track and you disturb a 'business' of flies. They just love poop!

The farm shop has our lamb in it once again. Marinated and popped on the BBQ is how we like it! We also have lots of sausages and burgers. Plus the usual suspects of steak, mince, braising steak and joints.
