Dear All,
Following the General Election in June, the Liberal Democrat
leader Tim Farron, stepped down as the party’s leader despite
having gained more seats in parliament than the previous
campaign.
However, the reason for Farron’s resignation wasn’t just about
politics, it was because he could no longer reconcile his strong
Christian faith, with his responsibilities as leader of the liberal party.
This followed on from what appeared to be an unfair media
campaign during the election, which constantly questioned Farron,
not on Liberal Democrat policies, but his beliefs as a Christian
about certain moral issues.
And it was during some of those interviews that I was reminded,
how in a so called ‘tolerant' society, the message of Jesus simply
won’t be tolerated, especially in public life; because of course
politics and religion just don’t mix!
Well that in turn immediately raised the question in my mind, about
where we’d be without great Christian politician’s such as William

Wilberforce, or Lord Shaftsbury for example, who campaigned
tirelessly for social justice.
But you know we shouldn’t be surprised that Christian’s aren’t
tolerated in public life, because the message Jesus brings is
counter cultural, and radically opposed to a so called ‘liberal
society,’ which was actually highlighted in Farron’s resignation
speech when he said:
“To be a political leader and to live as a committed Christian, to
hold faithfully to the Bible's teaching, has felt impossible for me.”
And so Tim Fallon should be commended for putting Christ and his
faith above everything else, but we should also pray that
Christians who are involved in politics remain, and stand firm to
make a difference; because as the acting Bishop of London Pete
Broadbent commented:
"No-one should have to choose between their faith and politics.”
Every blessing.
Jon.

September and we are asking people to suggest themes of hope; you can do this at the Coffee shop or by contacting us. Why not book these dates now and make sure you enjoy this new 30 to 45 minutes service, and bring a friend if you like. One thing I need to make clear. You can come to the coffee shop without staying for the service. We are not trying to pressure people at all. So carry on coming on Summer Sunday afternoons to sample the delightful cakes, tea, coffee, and company! Philip West
Saint Swithun Swithun (or Swithin, died c. 862 AD) was an Anglo-Saxon bishop of Winchester and subsequently patron saint of Winchester Cathedral. His historical importance as bishop is overshadowed by his reputation for posthumous miracle-working. According to tradition, the weather on his feast day (15th July) will continue for forty days. The precise meaning and origin of Swithun's name is unknown, but it most likely derives from the Old English word for 'strong'. St Swithun was Bishop of Winchester from his consecration in October 853 until his death on 2nd July sometime between 862 and 865. More than a hundred years later, when Dunstan and Æthelwold of Winchester were inaugurating their church reform, Swithun was adopted as patron of the restored church at Winchester, formerly dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul. His body was transferred from its almost forgotten grave to Æthelwold's new basilica on 15th July 971, and according to contemporary writers, numerous miracles preceded and followed the move. When visiting the church at Sproatley one anomaly is often in evidence which is the spelling of 'Swithin'. On the notice boards, both under the Lych Gate, in the church porch and at other points in the interior it is spelt 'Swithun'. 'Swithin' is the modern-day spelling of the name 'Swithun'.

When I came to south Holderness last year, I soon discovered what a brilliant place the Sunday afternoon Coffee Shop at St.Andrew’s Paull is, and I began to make it a priority every week. I found it a relaxing atmosphere to meets lots of interesting people and I really appreciated many good conversations, to say nothing of the superb cakes and drinks! So I committed myself to call in regularly again this year; I found that many of the customers were interested in the church, so I suggested we try holding a service once a month at 4pm when the coffee shop ended, for people who might like to stay. So we have started a very relaxed informal service on every third Sunday of the month. We are calling it “Rivers of Hope” because we are next to one of the greatest rivers of the world and because there seems to be a lack of hope in our country, whereas the Christian faith is full of hope. The first service on 21st May was well attended and its theme was the Easter Hope: how we can be sure that Jesus rose from the dead and offers us eternal life. On 18th June we looked at “Hope from forgiveness”; if we are honest, we all do things we regret and can hurt others, but God’s forgiveness is guaranteed and when we know we are forgiven we are filled with new hope for life. The next services will be on 16th July, 20th August, and 17th

It Happened in July
Julius Caesar was a Roman general, statesman and one of those responsible for the overthrow of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. He held enormous power and after his assassination in 44 B.C. his birth month, Quintillis, was renamed July in his honour.
The 7th July 2005 London bombings, sometimes referred to as 7/7, were a series of coordinated terrorist suicide bomb attacks in central London which targeted civilians using the public transport system during the rush hour. The first test atomic explosion took place near Alamogordo, New Mexico, U.S.A., on 16th July, 1945. Even before the test, the U.S. military had shipped a second atomic bomb to Pacific theatre forces to use in an attack on Hiroshima, Japan.
Apollo 11 was the space-flight that landed the first two humans on the Moon. Mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin, both American, landed the lunar module Eagle on 20th July, 1969. Armstrong became the first to step onto the lunar surface six hours later on 21st July at 02:56:15 UTC; Aldrin joined him about 20 minutes later. They spent about two and a quarter hours together outside the spacecraft, and collected 47.5 pounds of lunar material to bring back to Earth. Michael Collins piloted the command module Columbia alone in lunar orbit while they were on the Moon's surface.
Bug’s Bunny’s birthday on 27th July. Though there had been
characterizations of a rabbit character in earlier Warner Brothers cartoons, the first official Bugs Bunny cartoon was "A Wild Hare", first seen on 27th July, 1940.
Did you know that 31st July was Harry Potter's birthday? J. K. Rowling has told us that Harry's birthday is 31st July, which happens to be her birthday, too.
