L’Shalom, Rabbi Joshua Neely [email protected] • Mobile: 321.279.5315 Office Hours: Tuesday-Friday & Sunday • Please call or email for an appointment

We stood together, one and all, past and future to receive Torah at Mt Sinai. This

core principle of our faith has helped unite us for 3000 years. We don’t always

agree on how to implement or interpret the Torah. We certainly don’t always live

up to its commands even according to our own interpretations. We do always

believe that within the great spectrum of diverse Jewish communities spread

across time and space that we are all one people. I was proud that we shared the

holiday of Shavuot with clergy and congregants from across the Orlando com-

munity and Jewish spectrum. On July 31st we will come together again at a dif-

ferent synagogue to commemorate Tisha B’Av and the tragedies of our history. On September 16th we will

come together again at yet another synagogue for Selichot and to deepen our self reflections and penitence

at the threshold of the Yamim Noraim (High Holidays). Such reminders of our solidarity as Jews are crucial.

Our ongoing collaboration with Temple Shir Shalom in the Meitin Alliance for Growth And Learning (MAGAL)

is especially meaningful for the same reason.

Each synagogue and movement has a unique character and calls to different people. It would be a catastro-

phe if there were only one synagogue in town. It would be a tragedy if only one way of living Jewishly were

allowed. This is, however, the net result of the sad decision by Israel’s current government to “freeze” the

implementation of the Western Wall agreement. The agreement reached in January 2016, with the full back-

ing of this same government, was supposed to improve the conditions and access for those who wished to

visit the Kotel and pray in an egalitarian manner. As I said at the time, this was a flawed plan which perpetu-

ated the idea that the Kotel should be treated as a synagogue of any kind; it is a sacred, historical site but

not a fixed place of worship under the auspices of any movement or congregation. However, having com-

mitted to the plan which would have made it easier for families to share the spiritual space of the Kotel to-

gether, the government had an obligation to see it through. They have failed. Likewise, they are advancing

legislation which will strip all but government approved rabbis of the power to convert those who seek Ju-

daism.

We do not have a pope. The Kotel is not the St Peter’s Basilica. It is intolerable that the government has ig-

nored Israeli High Court decisions demanding fair treatment for the non-Ultra-Orthodox. It is intolerable that

State funds support only the most extreme visions of Judaism. It is intolerable that such extremism has con-

tinued to grow and reach beyond its own communities to impinge on the freedoms and dignity of other Is-

raelis. It is intolerable for us to remain complacent while the politics of the moment are driving us apart. Is-

rael should be and must always be the homeland of all Jews. Israel can and should continue to be a Jewish

state without discriminating against or showing undue favoritism towards any one stream of our people. I

implore you to speak out against this injustice before your heritage has been stolen from you. Visit

masorti.org/equality-at-the-kotel/. If you would like to know more ways to help, please contact me.

To our Temple Israel Family,

Summer is upon us. I wish all of you a healthy, happy, fun and dry Summer, until we

see each other again.

School is out, but things are still happening at Temple Israel. MAGAL has continued their planning for the sec-

ond year, as our Meitin Alliance for Growth And Learning thrives, with our collaboration with Temple Shir Sha-

lom.

Membership completed another successful event: Trivia Night at Red Cypress Brewery in Winter Springs. You

will be glad to know that our Trivia Team, the Mashugganuts, won first place out of more than 20 teams, test-

ing wit and skill. We look forward to another test, fellowship, and of course, some cold beverages.

Look forward to seeing you all for our annual Sha-Ba-BQ, coming up early August. Right before that open

event, with dinner served at no cost to our membership, Steven Kluger is anticipated to complete his Eagle

Scout Project, a renovation of our fire-pit, with bench seating. Can you imagine a cool Friday evening service

or Saturday Havdalah service with the fire crackling, and some good times with Rabbi and G-d? Can’t wait.

A short message this time around. We continue chugging along. Our Foyer is completed, and our art studio

has been renovated, courtesy of the Marlene A. Davis Art Endowment Fund. We hope to put that studio to

good use, with our children using it, not to mention adult coloring parties, or maybe some painting.

Looking to the sky, our roofing work commenced this week. We have major roofing structures, and some in

real major need of some rehab work. Some beams will be replaced too. More information to come.

Have a wonderful summer, and be well.

Until we see each other again,

Mark Kluger [email protected] Mobile: 407.280.2831

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and is able to explore places and experience

activities that are harder to come by during the bustle of the school year. One activity we hope you’ll be able

to make time for this summer is our Taste of MAGAL event on Sunday, July 23 where parents and children will

practice the art of rainbow challah making.

We are currently accepting registrations for next year. Forms are available on Temple Israel’s website and are

due by August 1. However, we would really appreciate receiving forms as soon as possible in order to help us

prepare for your students. Please contact me at [email protected] with any questions.

Wednesday, August 16 we will have our Open House/Teacher Meet & Greet session where families can come

by and get (re)acquainted with our teachers. Our first day of school will be Sunday, August 20 and, as usual,

we invite the parents to stay on this first day. The calendar for the entire year is available on our website.

We hope to see you at services this month. Following along in the siddur (or even just listening) is a great

way to remember the prayers and Hebrew that the students learned during the school year.

Classroom #1. Tot Shabbat is a joyful and engaging program geared toward

families with young children, ages 5 & under (older siblings are welcome, too).

The 45 minute program includes Shabbat themed songs, dancing, stories, simple

blessings, and a snack. Bring your friends and meet other families with small

children as we celebrate Shabbat with the youngest members of our commu-

nity. All are welcome and temple membership is not required. Afterwards, stay

and join our entire congregation for our Shabbat Kiddush Luncheon.

Hebrew Corner Each month I will examine a Hebrew verb with the goal of understanding how many

words are derived from the 3 letters that form the base thus enjoying the richness of

the Hebrew language.

L’Shalom,

Susan Bernstein

[email protected]

Now here are some of the

prefixes:

K or Ch = likeכ

L = to or forל

Now some basic words:

Ayn = there is none אין

mi = who (is) מי

nodeh = thanks נודה

baruch = blessed ברוך

ata hu = you who are אתה הוא

Now a suffix:

nu = our נו

Now we can apply the above components to understand the prayer

ayn keloheinu = there is none like our God אין כאלהינו

ayn kadoneinu = there is none like our Master אין כאדונינו

ayn k’malkeinu = there is none like our King אין כמלכנו

ayn k’moshiaynu = there is none like our Savior אין כמושיענו

I challenge you to go through the rest of this prayer and discover the translation for yourself.

Good luck and wishing you a joyful journey!

This month I would like to show how understanding our prayers can be achieved with a little practice. Let’s begin with the ( אין כאלהינו Ayn Keloheinu) prayer. Hebrew is mainly composed of roots along with prefixes and suffixes that are attached to them.

Here are some of the roots found in this prayer:

Ayl = God אל

Adon = Lord/Master אדון

Melech = King מלך

Moshia = Savior מושיע

Dear Sisters,

Let me begin with a huge THANK YOU to Debra Markowitz, our chairperson, and

Phyllis Kamenoff for arranging our beautiful installation luncheon on June 4. Even

though I was out of town and unable to attend, I have only heard wonderful things about it. With Debra at

the helm, one can expect the very best. I am looking forward to an educational and fun-filled year. You never

know what might be awaiting you, and I encourage you to be as active as possible as we continue to cele-

brate Sisterhood’s Centennial Year.

I want to bring your attention to a special item of business that was passed at the last board meeting of 2016-

17. Temple Israel will be replacing its ailing roof in increments over the next months. Sisterhood has voted to

contribute $10,000 to help defray the cost of this large expense. In addition, all proceeds up to $5,000 from

advertising in our 2017 -18 calendar book will be given to funding the roof replacement project in addition to

the $10,000 previously mentioned.

So, what does this mean? We need you to procure advertisers and we need you to place an ad for your own

business in the book. An “ad” also includes any personal greeting you choose to make. Our calendar book

committee is chaired this year by Fabienne Kaplan. Please contact Fabienne ([email protected]) for more

information. NOTE: The advertising deadline is July 15.

I encourage everyone to actively participate as we begin our 2017-18 year. Let’s commit to deepening the

spiritual lives of all of us as we move forward!

Warm regards, Arlene Safer van de Rijn, Sisterhood President [email protected] • Mobile: 407.761.1243

Rabbi Joshua Neely

Temple Israel’s Keepers of the Flame Not surprisingly, our membership dues do not cover Temple Israel’s expenses, and without generous donations we would be unable to fulfill our mission of building a sacred community. Thus our basic dues represent a member’s minimum financial commitment. Recognizing that there are many mem-bers who have the ability and the desire to provide greater support in addition to their basic dues, Temple Israel created a membership category called Keepers of the Flame to provide a mechanism for this increased level of giving. The generosity of our current and future Keepers is vital to the sustain-ability and growth of Temple Israel.

In appreciation of this increased-dues level of commitment, Keepers of the Flame are welcome at all Temple Israel sponsored Shabbat dinners, synagogue Seders and program events without additional charge. Only a reservation is required. Additionally, there is a designated “Keepers of the Flame” seat-ing area at all of the High Holiday services.

The following giving levels are suggested:

Benefactors $15,000 and up

Pillars $10,000 to $14,999

Defenders $7,800 to $9,999

Guardians $5,300 to $7,799

Protectors $3,300 to $5,299

Preservers $2,400 to $3,299

Kindlers (individuals only) $2,000 to $2,399

If you would like to be counted among our Keepers of the Flame, please send your giving level to:

Temple Israel 50 S. Moss Rd.,

Winter Springs, FL 32708-3002
