The Stylist: Miguel Rosas, education and artistic team member,
Wahl
The Technique: Specialty Portraits
When doing a specialty portrait haircut for men or women,
know the anatomy of the face you’re illustrating. “You can
practice on paper before you attempt your haircut, but this
level of skill is usually executed by a barber or stylist who has
an artistic background, such as drawing or painting,” Rosas
explains. “For beginners who want to learn portrait haircutting
techniques, I advise learning how to cut stenciled versions of
famous faces fi rst. Once mastered, the artist can start to add
diff erent shades and depths.”
How-to:
1. Make sure you have a quality picture of the portrait. Turn
the image to black and white to diff erentiate the highlights and
lowlights in the face. Lighter areas will be cut shorter, while
darker areas will be longer. Now scale the image so it fi ts on the
back of your client’s head. (Use your smartphone to edit and
scale.)
2. With the Sterling Refl ections Senior Clipper, use the No. 2
attachment comb and remove the hair in the area where the
portrait will be created. If the hair is thick and dark enough, you
may be able to cut the hair down to a 1 1⁄2 .
3. Hold the scaled picture next to the head to determine
what part of the portrait to start with. Typically, you’ll want to
begin by cutting the center of the face, then working around it.
Start high enough on the head so that you don’t run out of
hair to cut.
4. I started the portrait of rapper Tech N9ne [pictured below]
using the 5-Star Detailer, holding the trimmer so that the blade
is vertical and cutting an area for the nose. I also used the
Sterling Refl ections Senior Clipper to shade from the bridge to
the tip of the nose.
5. Now start on the lips of the portrait. Using the 5-Star
Detailer, I cut out the shape of the top lip fi rst, making sure
the corners of the mouth were wider than the nose. Usually,
the corners of the mouth will match up with the centers of the
pupils of the eyes. Using the 5-Star Cordless Tattoo, I precisely
cut out the top teeth. Then I cut out the bottom lip with the
5-Star Detailer; sometimes the top lip can be left dark, while
the bottom lip will be lighter (cut closer). I used the 5-Star
Cordless Tattoo to cut out the bottom teeth.
6. I cut the chin hair area out and started to create the shape of
the face from the chin to the cheeks. Usually, it’s best to use the
Sterling Refl ections Senior so that the hair isn’t cut too short;
hair needs to be left long enough for details to be cut in later
and to create a realistic depth perception using shadows. (I cut
the cheekbones with the 5-Star Detailer to get very close.)
7. Sometimes I close my eyes and reset my vision before doing
one of the most important parts: the eyes. First, create the
perfect guideline so the eyes are cut precisely where they
belong.
8. Near the bridge of the nose and between where the eyes
will be placed is where the arches of the eyebrows meet. I cut
out the shapes of the eyebrows on both sides using the 5-Star
Detailer. Having the eyebrows cut out fi rst helps determine
where to cut the eyes, providing a good guide. I used the 5-Star
Detailer to cut out the creases between the eyebrows.
9. Under the eyebrows, the eyelids were cut before cutting
the area for the whites around the pupil. These fi ne details will
be cut using the 5-Star Detailer, except for the whites in the
eyes, which are created using the 5-Star Cordless Tattoo (The
trimmer has a very small blade that’s perfect for detailing).
Make sure the pupils are level and are directly above the
corners of the mouth.
