Brother Knights:July is the month that Msgr. Mark Chamberlin takes his vacation with close fellow priests. He usually provides information in the Church Bulletin regarding his anticipated and deserved yearly period of rest and recuperation from his duties as our Pastor. We wish him well in his vacation and thank him for all that he does for the parish and our KofC organizations. As you may know, Father Mark has been a Knight for many years, serves as our chaplain, and fully supports the programs, activities, and involvements that our Council and Assembly undertake within our church, family lives, and community. July is also a month when our council makes the bi-annual contribution to Father Mark’s KofC retirement annuity, which the council started in 2006. What better way to further thank Fr. COUNCIL OFFICERS FOR FRATERNAL YEAR 2016-2017

GRAND KNIGHT: (Ervey Martinez) The Grand Knight is responsible for the welfare of the council. He presides over council meetings; acts as an ex-officio member of all committees, appoints a membership and programming director, convenes officers for a monthly meeting, and ensures all necessary reports are submitted to the state and Supreme Council. He should also be aware of the council’s financial status and ensure that his signature appears on all checks drawn.

CHAPLAIN: (Msgr. Mark Chamberlin) The Chaplain is the spiritual advisor of the council. He is expected to make a report at council meetings on religious matters. The Grand Knight appoints a priest in accordance with any rules established by the bishop of the diocese to serve as council chaplain.

DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT: (Mario Solis) The Deputy Grand Knight is second in command. He assists the Grand Knight with council affairs and fulfills all duties assigned to him by the Grand Knight. Should the Grand Knight be absent from a council meeting, the Deputy Grand Knight will preside. He performs this function by appointing, training and delegating members, attending special functions, communicating council goals and directing, monitoring, and evaluating council activities.

CHANCELLOR: (Dempsy Rowe) The Chancellor has a variety of responsibilities. Primarily, he assists the Grand Knight and the deputy grand knight in the execution of their duties and oversees the council in both their absences. He is charged with strengthening the members’ interests in council activities. The chancellor is chairman of the admission committee and a member of the Columbian Squires circle ceremonial team.

RECORDER: (Daniel Estrada) The Recorder is similar to a court reporter or a secretary. He is responsible for maintaining a true record of all actions of the council and its correspondence.

FINANCE SECRETARY: (Alvin Saathoff) The Financial Secretary is appointed by the Supreme Knight, upon recommendation of the council. His main area of responsibilities is maintaining all financial and membership records. He collects and receives all moneys from all sources, including annual dues from council members. He also handles supply orders for the council officers and members, filing the Report of Officer (#185), and submitting all membership transactions to the Supreme Council.

TREASURER: (Brad Warner) The Treasurer is responsible for the safekeeping and maintaining records of all council funds and accounts. He is responsible for depositing money into the council’s accounts and provides a certificate of such monies to the Grand Knight. He is also responsible for payment of all expenses.

LECTURER: (Kyle Nohavitza) The Lecturer is appointed by the Grand Knight to provide both educational and entertaining programs to the council. He is responsible for the ‘Good of the Order’ portion of council meetings. In order to provide members with informative and educational programs, he must be knowledgeable and aware of all council programming.

ADVOCATE: (Bill Reeves) The Advocate is the legal representative of the council and serves as the council’s attorney at trials and investigations of any interest to the council. While he does not need to be a member of the legal profession, he should be familiar with the council by-laws, the Order’s Charter, Constitution and Laws, Methods of Conducting a Council Meeting, and Robert’s Rules of Order.

WARDEN: (Dalton Choniere) The Warden is the ‘watchdog’ for council property and degree paraphernalia, except the property of the financial secretary, treasurer and recorder. He is also responsible for setting up the council chambers for meetings and ceremonial work. During ceremonial exemplifications, he will appoint and supervise guards.

INSIDE GUARDS: (Al Argiojo) OUTSIDE GUARD: (Eddie Riojas) The guards have similar responsibilities, but distinct differences. The Outside Guard tends to the outer door admitting visitors and members to the inner door. Once at the inner door, the Inside Guard checks to make sure that their membership cards are current.

TRUSTEES: (1st Year Matthew Perales, 2nd Year Edward Garcia and 3rd Year Thomas Sutherland) The Trustees consists of three members elected by the council and the Grand Knight, who serves as chairman of the board. They oversee the work of the Financial Secretary and Treasurer, and with the Deputy Grand Knight serve on the council’s retention committee. During council elections, only the three-year trustee is voted on, with the others moving on to become two-and one-year trustees, respectively.

What is the Fortnight for Freedom? Each year dioceses around the country arrange special events to highlight the importance of defending religious freedom. The Fortnight for Freedom is from June 21—the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More—to July 4, Independence Day.

The 2016 Fortnight for Freedom, with the theme of "Freedom to Serve," will take place from Saturday, June 21, to Friday, July 4. The theme of this years Fortnight focuses on the freedom to serve the poor and vulnerable in accord with human dignity and the Church's teaching. Catholics nationwide will take part in the third annual "Fortnight for Freedom", a 14-day period of prayer, education, and action for the protection of our fundamental right to religious liberty. For information on this year's fortnight and suggestions on what you can do on behalf of our religious liberties, we encourage you to visit www.fortnight4freedom.org

Knights of Columbus life insurance offers something precious few other financial products can – guarantees. As long as you pay your premiums, the policy proceeds will be there for your beneficiaries should something happen to you. That’s peace of mind, and that’s what we offer with every product in our portfolio.

We guarantee the cash value in your whole life policies will be there.

We guarantee the rates on your term insurance.

We guarantee our retirement products will provide a stream of income when you need it.

On top of those product guarantees, I guarantee that I will offer professional, high-quality service that you would expect from our organization.

Our Order is among the highest rated life insurers in North America. AM Best has rated the Knights of Columbus “A++, Superior” for 39 consecutive years. It’s a testament to our track record for excellence and security.

I would suggest that a principal reason that we were able to achieve those accolades is because we remain steadfastly committed to the vision of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney by providing life insurance by brother Knights for brother Knights.

That commitment is an essential core value of the Knights of Columbus, and our core values permeate all levels of our organization. We pledge to serve our brother Knights, and their families, according to our Golden Rule: “In all my professional relationships, I pledge myself to the following rule of conduct: I shall, in light of all conditions surrounding those I serve, render that service which, under the same circumstances, I would apply to myself.”

Let’s talk soon to discuss how our products can bring that peace of mind to you and your family.

The Knights of Columbus Insurance program operates solely for members and their families, relies on council-agent teamwork for its success, and provides the financial backbone for all of the Order’s good works.

WHAT DOES THE FOURTH DEGREE EMBLEM DEPICT?

A dove hovering over the Earth, mounted on a variation of a Crusader’s cross. The triad emblem symbolizes the union of the Three Divine Persons of the Trinity. The Globe represents God the Father, Creator of the universe. The Cross represents God the Son, Redeemer of Mankind. The Dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit, the Sanctifier of Humanity. The emblem’s colors (red cross, white dove and blue globe) represent the United States and stress patriotism, the basic tenet of the Fourth Degree.

EVANGELII GUADIUM PLAQUE

Knights Brother Greg and wife Andrea received the EVANGELII GUADIUM Plaque On Friday, May the 27th, a ceremony was held at the Cathedral where Bishop Mulvey recognized people

from many parishes in the Diocese with the presentation of the Evangelii Guadium plaque for

exceptional service to the Church in the local parishes. The name of the recognition plaque is

translated as “The Joy of The Gospel” -the title of Pope Francis’ encyclical. Each parish was

invited by the Bishop to present the name of one individual or one couple to be recognized in

this ceremony. The recipients from our Lady of Mount Carmel this year were Greg and Andrea

Young The Young’s have been extraordinary volunteers in serving OLMC is ways too numerous

to count, always willingly and always with a smile. They have never done anything to seek

recognition or thanks – they simply demonstrate the best in willingness to serve wherever and

whenever they can. The Bishop emphasized in his talk at the ceremony of Friday that the

presentation of the Evangelii Guadium plaque was a recognition, not an award. It is a means to

recognize exemplary service given with joy to the building up of the local church community

by example. As a community we are thankful to Greg and Andrea Young for their continued

joyful service. Many congratulations!!

Each ‘degree’ of the Knights of Columbus is associated with a particular virtue, the fourth being “Patriotism”. Consequently, the 4th Degree is often known as ‘The Patriotic Degree’. The Fourth Degree is frequently regarded as an honorary title with it’s regalia of tuxedos, capes, chapeaux and swords but should rather be thought of in terms of service to church and country, and the goals of the Fourth Degree may be summarized as the promotion of the ideals of Catholicism and Patriotism side by side. In June OLMC had two Knights that received 4th Degree exemplification. Ervey Martinez (Grand Knight) and Eddie Rojas (Outside Guard). Your fellow Sir Knights welcome you to the 4th degree as well as all colleague brother Knights! DiVivat Jesus!!
