Huge success for 0pen Gardens 2015

Well, what a wonderful day we had, starting with the excitement of Radio Norfolk’s Treasure Quest programme. The open gardens team were making smoked salmon sandwiches and listening to a very helpful lady guessing they needed our “extra” garden, which would have made it number 28! Still Sophie found the right garden in the end, by which time a small crowd of neighbours had gathered, so now we know the people of Thetford listen to radio Norfolk!

Although it was a dull and somewhat cloudy day, it didn’t deter our visitors, (from as far away as Edinburgh!) In fact they seem to have had more energy to visit more gardens and pick up lots of plants to take home with them. Our gardenhosts do love the

engagement of their visitors and are often willing to dig up offshoots, or cuttings of their prized plants to share.

There were plenty of refreshment stops to keep folk well fuelled, as our gardens were quite spread out this year. Some tried to sample them all, but for others the smell of bacon rolls wafting down Arlington Way proved irresistible, and they enjoyed this beautiful garden

There was of course a serious point to the day, raising money for St Nicholas Hospice Care, our local hospice, which cares so brilliantly for lots of people in our Thetford community. Last year we made a huge percentage leap on previous years, and this year we have surpassed £7K for the first time!.I would like to publicly thank ALL those involved, the gardeners, the plant sellers, the raffle ticket sellers, the cake makers, waitresses and those washing up, the Facebook and Twitter followers, and all the generous people who made Thetford Open Gardens such an all round success.

The lucky prize winners have received their prizes and the lucky numbers were:- 1st prize 00740, 2nd prize 01556, 3rd prize 05438, other winners were 05465, 02654,00304,05325,01165,01823,00061,03041,00930,03678,04598 and the lucky programme prize – the bee picture, was won by a keen gardener in Thetford! Best wishes, Rachel Woods

Thetford Flower Arranging Club

Have you ever put a bunch of flowers from the supermarket into a vase and thought how nice it would be to know how to arrange them to show them off to their best advantage? If so, then Thetford Flower Arranging Club could be for you. Each month, they hold a workshop or a demonstration, so that what you see one month, you can try out the next.

Everything you need for flower arranging is available to buy at the meetings, apart from the flowers. At the June meeting, Brenda Tubb, who teaches at Easton college, gave a demonstration to members, showing them how to create six different displays, from tall and imposing to low and dazzling. A variety of different blooms and foliage were used, to create colour themed displays. The group meets at the United Reformed Church in Earl’s Street on the third Thursday of the month, at 7.30 pm. If you would like more information, contact Lynda Moore on 01842 762919.

Next meeting of Thetford Flower Arranging Club is on the 16th of July - 7.30pm,

‘Time for Positive Choices’

Funded by the Office for the Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk, this is a unique development programme to transform the mind sets and attitudes of local 14-16 year olds, coming to Thetford this summer. And local adults can be involved to support the process. The programme will be run by The Benjamin Foundation, well known across Norfolk, in partnership with innovative, national charity, Youth at Risk. The course will use the Youth at Risk’s successful ‘tough-love’ approach, combining life-coaching skills with powerful personal development training, to aid young people with lives that are challenging and lack stability. The Benjamin Foundation will be on hand throughout the intensive course to offer individual emotional and well-being support, on a one-to-one basis. “It was like a light bulb switch went in my head and suddenly changed the way I looked at everything” - young person from a previous programme. Young people will begin an intensive workshop in early August, to work through past issues, develop crucial transferable skills, realise their talents and move towards cultivating a more fulfilling and optimistic future with a ‘can-do’ attitude. The young people will also take part in a 3-day residential at the end of the month, at an activity centre in Norfolk. However, none of this would be possible without the support of local adult volunteers. These volunteers have a unique opportunity to coach participants over a six month period, to help young people remain on track and be the best that they can be. “An excellent experience which not only contributed to my personal development and hopefully that of my

young person, but satisfied my social conscience.” Sabrina, a Youth at Risk trained volunteer. Recruitment for local volunteers has now begun. We’re looking for volunteers to contribute to the lives and build a connection with young people, give back to the community, and, most importantly, be part of the solution. No previous experience is needed, just a passion for making a difference and time available to coach.

All volunteers will be trained in Youth at Risk’s highimpact life coaching methodology, which provides much sought after skills and techniques, which can be transferred to other areas of life.

Bev Townsend, Positive Activities Coordinator at The Benjamin Foundation said, “We’re delighted to be working together with Youth at Risk on this programme for young people in the Thetford area. It offers local young people an opportunity to take responsibility for their lives and create a future that they’re excited about.”

For more information about the programme or to volunteer as a coach, please contact Clare on 07971 891924 or [email protected]

Thetford U3A flourishes and grows

Showcasing what it can offer, Thetford U3As first Open Day proved a crowd-puller event. (See the photo at bottom of the page).

Speaking at its close, chair of Trustees, Lynn Ready said: “We couldn’t have wished for anything better. Our groups put on a really good display and there was a lot of interest amongst visitors, a fair number of whom joined as new members.”

The number and variety of groups continues to grow so, for example, members can do everything from appreciating antiques, learning languages, developingcomputing skills, becoming a canny card player, exercising by walking or play bowls and badminton for competitive fun.

Outings to places of interest are also now a regular feature, with trips already to London, Ely and Bletchley Park, while holidays too, are well supported. Following this year’s ‘Holland in Bloom’ trip, there are even more ambitious plans for a longer holiday to the Far East.

To add to Thetford’s U3A success, the organisation has now been registered as a charity.

The Open Day event was held in the Carnegie Room, where regular meetings and talks are held on the fourth Thursday of every month. The next is on July 23 starting at 2pm, when Richard Gibbons will speak on one of the 20th century’s moments of extreme Cold War tension – the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Talks are free to members but non-members can enjoy them for £2 at the door. Tea & coffee is available after the talk. More information can found on the Thetford U3A website: www.Thetfordu3a.org

Safer Thetford Action Group (STAG)(Thetford Local Action Group)

STAG is a multi-agency partnership comprising five statutory bodies - Breckland Council, Norfolk Constabulary, Norfolk County Council, Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service and Thetford Town Council. Further,Flagship Housing and Victim Support are actively and positively involved within the partnership which is very actively supported by residents, community and volunteer groups. The partners are required to:

• Identify, through local crime and disorder audits and consultation, key local crime and disorder priorities• Formulate strategies to assist in tackling these key priorities and reduce crime at the local level• Monitor and evaluate those strategies

STAG works collectively to enable the statutory organisations to meet these obligations under Section 17 of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, in identifying and responding effectively to community safety and crime concerns within Thetford and has proven to be successful since its launch.

STAG currently meets monthly as a partnership forum, with one meeting each quarter being an open, public, priority-setting meeting responding to local issues raised by Thetford residents or agencies. The meeting may agree up to three priorities for each 3 month, quarterly period.

The three meetings between the public meetings are for partnership officers and other organisational representatives who agree, implement and monitor actions using an evidence-based, problem solving approach in responding to the quarterly priorities. This approach will identify a lead organisation for a priorityand agree the actions to be implemented and any supporting actions from other organisations.

Partners, including Flagship Housing, contribute resources in a number of ways, with Breckland Council, Norfolk Constabulary and Norfolk CountyCouncil contributing officer time to STAG priority planning and intervention activities. These organisations may then provide specific support from within their own resources. Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service monitor the meetings and attend for specific agenda items; and provide resources as required. The STAG arrangements allows for direct communication at a county level with

Norfolk Constabulary and the Norfolk Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office.

Thetford Town Councillors attend meetings and provideliaison and communications with Thetford Town Council. Thetford Town Council also provides the use of Kings House and the Small Guildhall for the meetings.Norfolk Constabulary provides admin support through the distribution of agendas and meeting notes andpublicising the Public Meetings.

Town Centre Floral Hanging Baskets 2015Thetford has become well known for the fabulous display of flowers and inviting town centre in the summer due to the annual display of hanging baskets. Although many towns are making cutbacks, with the help of local residents and businesses Thetford Town Council are striving to keep this wonderful tradition alive.

If you would like to sponsor a hanging basket the cost is set at £35 for this year, however we welcome any donations towards the cost of the baskets. There will be a roll of honour outside the Town Council Offices at Kings House displaying the names of everyone who participates in the scheme. This could be a great way of marking a birthday or anniversary by having a basket of flowers in honour of a loved one.

If you would like to join in the campaign, please fill in the slip below detailing the name of the person, Business or Club to be displayed in the roll of honour. Return it together with a cheque made payable to Thetford Town Council marked for my attention. Maurice Howard - Town Clerk

AllotmentsWould you like to have an allotment? Having an allotment is a serious undertaking, which demands constant care and attention. It is also a very rewarding hobby, allowing access to fresh air, good exercise and the opportunity to join clubs with like minded people. Allotments are still proving very popular, but our waiting list has virtually disappeared. If you feel you are able to look after a large plot of land and are committed to keeping it weed free and fully cultivated, please fill in an application form and submit on the Town Council website or alternatively request a hard copy from the Council offices at Kings House and return. Prices are £36.00 for a full plot or £21.00 for a half plot per year.

Dog FoulingDog Fouling is an ongoing issue in Thetford, and Breckland Council has joined up with Keep Britain Tidy to launch a new campaign aimed at reducing dog fouling across the district.

The ‘We’re Watching You Campaign’ was successfully piloted by Keep Britain Tidy last year and is aimed at dog walkers who do not pick up after their dogs. Breckland will soon roll out a small number of signs at carefully selected sites in each of the district’s five market towns, including Thetford, and surrounding areas.

The Posters include the image of a pair of eyes and the slogan ‘Bag that poo, any bin will do’ to remind dog walkers to pick up after their dogs and dispose of the poo bag in the nearest general waste or designated poo bin, or to take it home and dispose of it in their own household waste bin. The signs are made from a material that remains visible after dark. The pilot scheme saw an average reduction in fouling of 46% where the signs were introduced.

Residents can inform the council of litter and dog mess by using the ‘report it’ button on Breckland’s website. Go to www.breckland.gov.uk/content/report-litter-and-dog-mess

Thetford Cemetery Car ParkPlanned works to the London Road Cemetery car park and a new access road in the Cemetery will commence on Monday 6th July 2015 for approximately 7 weeks. During this time available car parking will be very limited. Thetford Town Council apologise for any inconvenience caused during these works.___________________________________________________________________________________

News fromThetford Probus

Family funeral service adapts to changesAn intriguingly-titled talk ‘The Art of Surprise’ had members of Thetford Probus Club wondering what was in store for them at their June monthly meeting. All the more so as the speaker was Mark Skinner the owner of the well-known local funeral service. The choice of his talk title soon became apparent when he spoke about the way funerals have changed over the past 30 years or so. Mark explained that his career started when still a schoolboy, sweeping up a workshop where coffins were made. “The day I left school, I joined Brandon undertaker Harvey Adam who encouraged me to go on training courses, and while I was still only 17, I was arranging funerals,” he added. “After 10 years and Mr Adam’s retirement I decided to branch out on my own and now I am very fortunate that my son and daughter have joined me so we are truly a family business.”Speaking about the changes in funerals, Mark said that one of the most significant was the increase in Civil Ceremonies services conducted by celebrants. This, along with the introduction of music ranging from pop to classical and the wide variety of hearses, had made funerals very different from those in the past. The choice of a hearse, could be anything from a motorcycle sidecar to military tanks and fire engines or a traditional horse-drawn carriage and even a Victorian hand cart.Technology has made it possible for coffins to be personalised with computer-generated graphics and pictures to create unique themes such as a favouriteplace or view. Another technological breakthrough makes it possible for ashes to be converted into glass or diamonds which can then be made into lockets or

jewellery. “It’s not something that appeals to everyone,” Mark acknowledges, “but this shows how things have changed and, besides the 2,000 different urn designs, it offers yet another way of remembering loved ones.”Inevitably, Mark touched on the cost of funerals, which runs into several thousands of pounds, mentioning that pre-paid plans have become more common, not just because the price is fixed and paid for, but as a way of avoiding concerns about costs and arrangements for the bereaved. And he had a word of encouragement for longevity. “Any of my clients who live to 100 are eligible for a free funeral,” he said, adding that he did not make any charge for his services if a person was aged under sixteen. For a talk which at the outset might have been considered a very sombre subject, it turned out to be one of the most entertaining, with the perfect balance of humour and dignity.

In offering a vote of thanks, club Chairman Mike Brindle had no difficulty in leading members in an enthusiastic round of applause for their speaker.

The June meeting of the Thetford Society began with tributes to Mervyn Mitchell, Harold Preston and Derek Serjeant, members who had recently died. Details were

given of the barbecue planned for July 25 and the trip to the Cromer Pier Show.

The Chairman, Stuart Wright, welcomed Karen-Emma White from the Ancient House Museumwho gave a fascinating talk on Thetford’s unique Pulp-ware which had been granted a patent in 1878 and was manufactured in Bishops Mill in Mill Lane. Members were able to see some of the more unusual items which are on display in the museum and hear how the various finishes and intricate patterns were achieved. Karen was pleased to know that some items of pulp-ware were still being used in members’ homes. Date of the next meeting is July 7th when Tom Faddenwill give a talk entitled “Does he take sugar?”New members always welcome.

THETFORD WOMENS

INSTITUTE

We are attracting a few more members

this year and are always pleased to welcome newmembers to our monthly meetings. We have had some interesting speakers so far this year and enjoyed listening to Helen Reeve a young 30 year old lady who manages a herd of Waveney Dexter Cattle. In a man’s world, she manages to shine. A subject which sounded different was when we welcomed Clare Stiles from Dementia Friends. Clare made the subject so interesting and gave us facts few knew about. We enjoyed our June birthday meeting when we had Rachel Duffield from the Gressenhall Museum tell us about the music hall singer Marie Lloyd. Rachel was dressed as Marie Lloyd and brpught us a touch of her music hallmagic. Once again Thetford W.I are organizing a Bake-off cake competition as part of the Thetford’s Great Festival. Entries and judging for this will take place on 22nd August at the Guildhall. We had a very good response last year, and hope to do better this year. There is a change in the categories, and there will still be children’s classes for the under-12’s. We are indebtedto the Norwich City College who are sponsoring this event once again. Entry forms are available at the Leaping Hare. Anyone who wants more information about Thetford W.I can call the President, Rose Peterson on 01842 754273.

Citizens Advice Bureau

I’ve heard that the new pension reforms mean that I will have full access to my pension pot when I turn 55. How do I work out what I should do with my pension savings?

Diss, Thetford & District Citizens Advice is deliveringPension Wise appointments across Norfolk and Suffolk giving people access to free and impartial pension guidance in their local area. Following pension reforms on April 6, people approaching retirement have greater freedom over how they can use their pension pots. People will be able to take a lump sum, take out an annuity or a mixture of both. Pension Wise is a new Government service designed to help people make sense of their pension options, and empower them to make the right choices for them.

Diss, Thetford & District Citizens Advice will be delivering free face to face Pension Wise sessions which are available to book now. The 45 minute appointments will be tailored to the individual, taking into account the value of their pension and their plans for retirement.

A Pension Wise appointment may help you if: 1. You are approaching retirement or are 55 or over. 2. Have a

defined contribution pension. 3. Are thinking of accessing your pension in the next six months.

Guidance appointments are also available on the telephone, delivered by the Pensions Advisory Service. People can also get information and general guidance online at www.pensionwise.gov.uk

Tom Smith, Specialist Guidance Caseworker of Diss, Thetford & District Citizens Advice, said: “Pensions can be a confusing topic and Pension Wise appointments will help people to make sense of their pension choices.

CHARLES BURRELL CENTRE OPEN DAY Sunday 6th September 2015

As part of the Thetford’s Great festival last year, on a sunny September day we opened our doors and invited the community to our very first Open Day. It was a chance to find out about an exciting new project that was beginning to develop in the former high school building. The event provided us with a platform to build a very unique network whilst enabling us to promote the first group of tenants on site.

Exactly one year later, and again as part of the Festival, we would like to invite you all back to see our progress and discover the many activities and services now available at Charles Burrell Centre.

Again Our network has grown to over 40 organisations including a call centre, nursery, dance school, recruitment agency, cheerleaders and much more. We welcome former pupils, teachers and local residents to take a walk around the centre and see how the former classrooms have been transformed into busy and vibrant spaces now used by a wide range of local businesses and community groups.

There will be a chance to meet our tenants and sample the activities they offer such as sports, art, drama, dancing, exercise and children’s activities as well as stalls, games and competitions. West Suffolk College will also be providing information on a huge range of college courses that are now available in Thetford for the very first time. Be sure to bring along friends, families and former classmates and join in what is set to be a very action packed day. The event will also provide people with the opportunity to purchase shares to become a member of CBC Ltd and find out more about volunteering on site. We look forward to seeing you here on Sunday 6th September from 10am – 4pm. You can also keep up to date with the activities on offer by following us on Facebook and Twitter.

Any local organisations wanting to be part of the event or hold a fundraising stall can contact the

organising team in 01842 779867 or email:[email protected]

Introducing Cartoon Club....

Cartoon Club was set up by Danielle Adams whose background in art started at a very early age just copying cartoons from the TV. Moving through the education system with high grades in GCSE, A-level, Art School and a degree in Animation. Along with a few extra courses in digital painting and workshops with character designers from Pixar. She then began teaching her own lessons at Center Parcs in Elveden and still teaches at Denny Bros in Bury St Edmunds. She is currently working on her own projects one of which is illustrating a series of childrens books and a few tattoo designs.

Danielle (pictured far left) said: “Cartoon Club was set up because when I was at school I wasn’t always allowed to draw my cartoon creations and it wasn't really seen as ‘art’. I believe this is still relevant now so I wanted to create a club where children and adults can come along and explore this particular art form outside of a school classroom. To be good at cartoon drawing you need to practise a lot!!

From experience, I have found that my drawingskills have improved so much when I have drawn the real thing first, for example a cartoon tiger design will

look so much better if you practise drawing the real thing first, and that’s what I want to bring to the lessons”.Cartoon Club sessions take place every Saturday from 2pm-4pm at the Charles Burrell Centre. It costs just £6 each - all materials are provided, if you don't have your own. There will possibly be some extra sessions over summer holidays too. Activities include looking at different aspects of cartoon art-eyes and expressions to more specialised areas like dragons and monsters!

For more information contact Danielle on 07964232485, or e-mail: [email protected]

British Bake OffMost people only think about applying suncream when they go on holiday abroad, yet fail to do so during sunny spells here in the UK. Many people under estimate the power of the British sun and take a laid back approach to sun protection. In a study carried out on behalf of cancer research UK and Nivea Sun more than a third of those surveyed ( a total of 4,100) said that the last time they were sunburnt was in the UK. 11% said they were burnt whilst relaxing in the garden or park, 10% were burnt whilst taking part in outdoor activities and 5% were burnt on the beach. Of course we all need some sun to help with the production of Vitamin D for healthy bones, but over exposure to the sun can cause sunburn, which is a sign that the DNA in your skin cells has been damaged. This increases not only the risk of skin cancer but premature ageing and wrinkles. Please remember too that children’s young skin is much more delicate and burns VERY easily. Protectalso with wide breamed hats, T-shirts and any exposed areas with sunscreen. Buggies for babies and toddlers really need added parasols too. So remember, look after your skin and enjoy the sun safely. By Lisa Stallings, Halcyon Days

Sun Sense By Caroline King

This month’s “beauty geek” feature is focusing on sunscreens and how best to apply them. It has been lovely to experience the warmer weather and longer evenings, however, we don’t want to pay the price for over exposing our bodies too much.

I asked some willing people to let me know if they currently use sunscreen, if so what factor did they use? Whilst most of them stated that they did use sunscreen, most said only when the sun is physically out and during holidays or in the Summer months. Most of you stated that you always used it on the children and then perhaps used the left overs of their cream on yourselves. Did you know that there is a correct amount you should be applying of cream? Studies have shown that most people apply less than half of the correct amount that should be applied to our bodies. Sun products can be purchased in a variety of forms such as lotions, sprays, gels, creams and oils to name but a few. It’s important to remember one application is not enough and products do need to be re-applied.

Whilst I am not trying to scaremonger you into thinking that the sunshine is bad for you. In moderation it is actually good for us. It lifts our mood, is great at helping vitamin production plus good for our bones and makes us feel good.

The British Association of Dermatologists states:When you currently buy sunscreen containing UVA protection in the UK you may notice a UVA star rating on the packaging. The stars range from 0 to 5 and indicate the percentage of UVA radiation absorbed by the sunscreen in comparison to UVB, in other words the ratio between the level of protection afforded by the UVA protection and the UVB protection. Be aware that if you choose a low SPF it may still have a high level of stars, not because it is providing lots of UVA protection, but because the ratio between the UVA and UVB protection is about the same.Until next time…..Enjoy the Summer, love the sun, and wear sun protection.

Our ‘Community Hero’ award this month goes to Mark Dean who has been undertaking the ‘three peaks’ challenge to raise money for the Rainbow Ward at West Suffolk Hospital.

Sonia Dean nominated Mark and said; “The journeystarted when a few of the local men in Thetford talked about walking the three peaks for charity. The Rainbow Ward was an obvious choice as all their childrenhad received outstanding care from them. Mark then put this into practice by contacting agencies and organisations to also sponsor them. Mark was determined this would happen” They have so far reached one peak, please see picture below:

The local community have been so supportive especially Londis on Canons Walk who have helped raise a portion of the monies. The Mulberry in Thetford celebrated their victory by holding a homecoming meal in June.

Sonia added: “Mark is always looking for a way to help the less fortunate and will go that extra mile. That’s why I think he deserves to be recognised as a ‘community hero’.

Congratulations to Mark, he receives a £50 voucher to spend with an advertiser of his choice from within the About Thetford magazine kindly sponsored by Thetford Garden Centre. If you know someone that you think should be nominated as a ‘community hero’ - please email:

Thank you to all those who opened their gardens last month. The rain held off, Treasure Quest came up trumps with their hunt for a clue and there were so many interesting gardens to visit. Altogether a fine day out.

July is the month to enjoy your garden or allotment with tasks being little more onerous than keeping up with picking courgettes. If you let one or two fruits go on developing into marrows, the plants stop producing new small courgettes as all they are programmed to do is produce seeds. You will probably get plenty of help with picking strawberries so no problems there. If you planted early potatoes, it’s worth burrowing down into the soil to see if they are a decent size for lifting as it’s so hard to tell from the surface. Keep sowing salad crop seeds; lettuce, radish and rocket all grow very rapidly and will soon be at edible size if you can keep them watered. The heaviest work is probably pruning and strangely this is the time to tackle plum trees. They are at risk from silver leaf disease if they are pruned in the winter and need to be dealt with while they are growing vigorously. Any shrubs which flowered in June should be cut back in July as well to ensure young growth to flower next year and to keep a good shape and size. Examples would be philadelphus and weigelia. If you have a quick growing hedge, that too will need attention.

For most people the main task for July should be dead-heading to encourage more blooms to come all through the summer. Even the grass is growing more slowly now so the lawn should not need mowing so

Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements39

often. There should definitely be time in the evening to sit and admire what you and nature have achieved.

This month’s meeting should be most entertaining. Bryan Thurlow is coming to give his performance of The Perennial Mr Potter – recounting the life of a Suffolkgardener of the last century and his experiences. Visitors are welcome – come along to the URC at 7.30 on Thursday 30th July. This is the day after our annual coach trip which is to Sandringham Flower Show. Please contact a committee member if you are interested.

25th Anniversary for Honington Beavers1st Honington (RAF) Beaver Scouts recently celebrated their 25th Anniversary. The Group was founded in 1990 by Les Nunn and later taken over by his wife Ruth. Both Les and Ruth joined the Birthday Party and Less told the current Beaver Scouts about how he formed the Group and showed them the original flag which he had handmade along with a number of old photographs of the original Beaver Colony.

A competition was held to design an Anniversary badge and the winning entry, chosen by Les was turned into a badge and presented to all the current Beaver Scouts at the end of the evening. The winning entry was designed by Max Skelly. The evening concluded with a number of party games, food and a birthday cake.

Success in European Championships for local Martial Arts School

On Saturday 30th May 2015 competitors from all over Europe gathered for the annual Kuk Sool Won™ European Championships held at the University of East Anglia Sports Park, overseen by Grandmaster In Hyuk Suh. Amongst them were ten students from the Thetford Kuk Sool Won™ School, keen to test themselves under the spotlight of the judges and spectators.

Kuk Sool Won™ is a system of martial arts that encompasses the entire spectrum of the Korean fighting arts. There are therefore a wide variety of divisions to compete in: traditional forms, self-defence techniques, sparring and weapons (sword, staff, double short sword, double short staff and spear). Previous competitions have also included knife throwing and Korean archery. The Thetford Kuk Sool Won™ School has only been open for 18 months, so for many this was the first time they had attended such a massive event and there was no shortage of nerves. Congratulations are thoroughly well deserved to Isabel Nicolaou, Joshua Eves, George Carter, Stephen Dwyer, Thomas Parker, Leon Racey, Anthony Elmer, David Kinnen, Wendy Hughes and Chris Nicolaou for the effort they put into preparation and practice, and for their spirit of friendliness, fair play and togetherness that is the hallmark of all Kuk Sool Won™ events. The competition was hard fought with 650 entrants all wanting a spot on the podium. The Thetford team achieved some brilliant results: Isabel Nicolaou - silver in self-defence techniques and

copper (4th) in forms.Joshua Eves – gold in self-defence techniques

George Carter – silver in self-defence techniques, bronze in forms and bronze in sparring.

Stephen Dwyer – copper in self-defence techniques, silver in forms and silver in sparring.

Thomas Parker – bronze in self-defence techniques and bronze in forms.

Leon Racey – gold in self-defence techniques, silver in forms and copper in sparring.

David Kinnen – silver in forms.Wendy Hughes – copper in self-defence techniques.

post tournament Masters Exhibition where newly promoted black belts, masters and chief masters demonstrated the higher levels of Kuk Sool Won™. The highlight of this being the Grandmaster’s eldest son, 9th degree master Sun Jin Suh, performing the Crane on a Cloud form, which is viewed by many as the pinnacle ofmartial arts skill and all students aspire to learn and perfect it.

Be inspired to swim – raising awareness of the benefits of disability swimming

Swimming is a great activity for improving health, fitness and emotional wellbeing. Mobility is improved compared to when on land as the water supports the whole body. Buoyancy helps to ease tight or painfuljoints and tendons and helps to improve balance and agility when moving through the water. It's also a great leveller and brings a feeling of equality because once the swimmer is in the water often any physical disabilities are irrelevant. It’s also a good way for making those all important social connections for your child. It offers them the chance to make lots of new friends in addition to improved confidence and comfort in and around water, not to mention the sense of achievement when mastering a skill for the first time. Teaching provides its own challenges and requires tailoring teaching methodsand approaches to suit the individual. The sensory element of the water has many therapeutic quali-ties. It can stimulate interaction and communication skills in children with emotional, behavioural and communication disorders and neurological conditions such as autism. It also helps with balance, coordination

and learning to follow instructions. Using references to the child’s special interests, e.g cars or numbers, helps to focus their attention on the task. Anyone can take part in swimming! For people interested in learning more about disability swimming please visit:

I am in the process of co-ordinating and organisingsmall groups of children for swimming lessons at Edmund de Moundeford Primary school swimming pool, both as part of the curriculum for school swimming, in addition to extra-curricular lessons. These lessons are for small groups of children either with physical, visual or intellectual difficulties. The aim of the lessons will be to meet the needs of the individual learner in a calm environment and in a patient manner involving guided discovery and learning through play.
