Notes from the Editor's Desk

The Penn-Ohio Tour is over. We had a great time visiting all of the places along the Saint Lawrence Seaway. One of the places that we visited was the Eisenhower Lock. I just read in the paper that a couple of days later, a ship hit the wall and put a hole in the ship. Seventeen people were injured and the lock

had to be closed. To all correspondents: if you have email, please email your chapter news. Please email to

[email protected]. I appreciate those who use this method. If you don't know how to attach pictures, you can send pictures separately in the mail and I will scan them.

Correspondent deadlines:July 5 August Issue

Director: Terry Kempke

Well another month has gone by. I hope everyone who went on the New York Tour with AJ and Carol had a great time and if there were any problems they were small. Thanks to AJ and Carol for your time and efforts.  Penn-Ohio is very grateful for you taking on this tour.

I hope everyone is out enjoying their “A.” The weather hasn’t really cooperated. At the next Penn-Ohio meet I ask that everyone would wear their name tags. I like putting a name with a face. Everyone continue enjoying summer and be safe.

2015 Penn-Ohio Tourby Carol Pennington

Sunday, June 14, saw members of Penn-Ohio arriving at the Riveredge Resort in Alexandria Bay, NY. Everyone but Blaine Davis had an uneventful trip and arrived throughout the day.

Monday saw some rain in the morning but it stopped by the time we started our events. Half of the group went to an antique boat museum in Clayton, NY while the other half boarded a boat for a trip to Rock Island Lighthouse. The boat trip was delayed about an hour while waiting on Tom Zimmerman, who had car trouble, and his group to arrive. This worked out fine as it helped give the sun some time to burn off the fog so by the time we arrived at the lighthouse the day was sunny. Lunch was on your own in Clayton and most of us ate at

Bella's. After lunch, the groups switched events. For supper, we went to Coyote Moon Winery for wine tasting and a buffet.

Tuesday morning started out very rainy. We were to take a boat to Singer Castle and Boldt Castle at one. Tom Easly said the rain would be over by noon and it co-operated. It took over an hour and a half to ride to Singer Castle where we were given a guided tour. We then boarded the boat for the trip back to Boldt Castle. We were dropped off and you could walk the grounds and tour the castle on your own. Riveredge was providing us entertainment that night and we had dinner reservations for 6:30. Unfortunately, that didn't give much time to explore everything at Boldt Castle. The entertainment turned out to be a husband and wife who sang many old songs. He was 84 and could still belt out a good song.

On Wednesday, we drove to Eisenhower Locks in Massena, NY. We arrived at noon in time to for a ship to pass through. Just beyond the lock was the powerhouse museum. However, with luncheon reseverations at 1, we did not get to see the museum. We ate at the Copper Still. What a great lunch they provided. Some people opted to got back to see the powerhouse museum while others continued on to Ogdensburg to the Remmington Museum. I had seen Remmington's art work prior to this but I never knew he was from New York. Several of his originals were on display.

Thursday we drove to Sacketts Harbor, NY. Here we saw the area where the fort had been. The command-er's home was open for guided tours. We also toured a church that had Tiffany stained glass windows.  The visitor's center had a nice movie of how the area was settled and what part it played in the War of 1812. Very historic town. In the evening, we had our banquet at Cavallario's in Alexandria Bay. It was a nice end to great week.

Penn-Ohio Chapter News

Mohican Correspondents: Bill McElroy

The Mohicans gathered on 4-18-15 at Buehler’s restaurant in Orrville for our monthly gathering, hosted by Dan and Ginny Herrmann. Those in attendance included Buster and Betty Smith, Gary and Virginia Heckathorn, Luain Graff, Paul Rowlands, Bob and Bill McElroy, Clyde and Ruth Mayberry, Norm and Linda Ream, and Dave and Donna Anderson. Lucky Dan Herrmann won the 50/50. As with most of our meetings, the after dinner discussions bring up memories of years past. Clyde Mayberry recalled way back in April of 1967 when when a 4-month-old Bill McElroy attended his first Penn-Ohio Meet. Ruth Mayberry had to drive Carolyn McElroy’s 1965 Chevrolet Impala as young Bill was a little fussy. Forty-eight years later, I’m still a member but probably not as fussy. In retaliation for this story, I began to think of some of the good times spent with Clyde and Ruth Mayberry. I remember growing up and admiring their nicely restored Victoria. This car is the reason why my first Model A was also a 1931 Victoria.  I remember the very first time Clyde let me sit in his Vicky. The coolest thing was the green and white gearshift knob. I’ve looked for years to find another one like the one in Clyde’s Vicky but haven’t found one yet. Over the years we’ve had cookouts in the Mayberry backyard. We’ve gone out to dinner many times. For many years, we got together and made homemade ice cream on New Year’s Eve. Once, many moons ago, Clyde and Ruth hosted the chapter economy run. I was allowed to tag along with Clyde in his Chrysler.  It was the first time I recall seeing a speedometer needle approach the 90 mph mark. Of course, I haven’t seen that since. When I began restoring my Victoria, Clyde was there to help and teach me the skills of bodywork and painting. And let’s not forget Ruth’s super good pies that she cooked for the Mohicans over the years. Really good food! So, thanks to Clyde and Ruth for all the good memories!

The Mohicans met on 5-10-15 at Buehler’s restaurant in Orrville for the monthly May meeting hosted by Luain Graff.  Those in attendance were Nielsons, Smiths, Herrmanns, Heckathorns, McElroys, Andersons and daughter Penny and Paul Rowlands. Topics discussed were a possible new member and a special meet being held in August for the Mohicans at members Dan and Ginny Herrmanns home. We are hoping that Clyde Mayberry and Ray Fahrni get to feeling better soon.

Rubber City Correspondent: Bruce Rollings

First, thanks to all the Penn-Ohio folks who turned out for the Spring Banquet on May 17, and to the Eagles’ Hall and Brass era cars owners for their facilities! We had 85 Model A’s signed in, and 165 folks who enjoyed the great ham & chicken dinner catered by our own John Menches and group. Thanks also to the Rubber City Ladies who served as servers, and to President Les Lucas and all others who helped make the day a great success! We sincerely hope all that attended enjoyed themselves, even the folks whose steering (I’m told) didn’t quite make it to the brass era car garage!

Congratulations and thanks to Dave “Grumpy” Weisel and Barbara for their service on the Penn-Ohio Board the last 2 years, and welcome and best wishes to new Director Terry Kempke.

We participated in varying degrees in Local Memorial Day Parades, from Hudson to Green to Lakemore (who knew?) to New Franklin/Clinton/Canal Fulton, followed by a picnic at Les & Lois Lucas’ place. Sparky and Lynda Baker were elsewhere, welcoming their grandbaby #5 (not the full name!). We were unable to play as well, the truck was ready but the driver was not, having come down with a short-term bug. Anyone want to buy a large, unopened bag of mini-tootsie rolls? Hope everyone enjoyed the parades and for sure, the picnic.

Got some great health news for John Menches, at this time looks he’ll be able to enjoy the Penn-Ohio New York trip!

Next Rubber City event will be a July 11 Portage Lakes Picnic, hosted by George & Joan Brandon. The rest of the summer schedule is looking great, lots of different activities.

The relic is in the beauty shop, at least partially—got my “low rider” seat springs from our pals at Snyder’s, and turned ‘em over to the upholstery shop for covering—I’ll maybe be able to see out the windshield a little more comfortably! This will also make available my “pretty good” condition original (I think) seat springs with (not original) black vinyl covering. The burlap & cotton padding looks old enough to be original, minus the mice nests! I also have a nice 10-leaf rear spring (no bushings) that I’ll spring for $ 100 or so. Contact Bruce Rollings at330-645-6318.

GO CAVS, even though, having played (sparingly!) in college, I can’t actually watch an NBA “game” for more than a minute or 2 as it reminds me of the World Wrestling Federation with a ball—but I’d still love to see the Cavs win!

Flying Quail Correspondent: Sarah Neal

It’s been awhile since the Flying Quails have updated everyone on our many activities. I’ll try to keep it short! In March, we had lunch at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green to check it out for

NEO Correspondent Pat Proch

the Fall Banquet. All in attendance voted to have the Fall Banquet there on October 18th. Everyone was excited to have the location and reserved.

April’s meeting was lunch at Splinter’s Café in Carey, Ohio hosted by Carol Weihrouch and Bill Pahl. After lunch, there was a fun Easter Trivia game with prizes.  Brad and Connie Bailey came in first place for the most correct

answers. Second and third place was a tie until Bill Pahl asked the tie breaking question. Barry and Susan Sandrock were second and Doc Mahler was third.

Later in April was an early dinner at Jolly Rodgers in Port Clinton, Ohio and then to Bench’s Greenhouse for a Car Show in Elmore, Ohio. The ladies were very excited to hear there

was going to be a “Pansy Centerpiece Make & Take” craft for us to do in the greenhouse.

May was a great trip hosted by Jim & Floremar Snodgrass and Howard McNish to Henry’s Restaurant in Kenton, Ohio. After a brief meeting, the group then visited The Stinson Band Organ Company in Bellefontaine, Ohio. The owner, Donald Stinson was featured in an article in “Country Living” magazine and is pictured here with the smallest of his band organs. The quote from Barry Sandrock, one of our members, wraps up everyone thoughts of this man: “He is a very intelligent and talented man.”

Eleven Flying Quails attended the Spring Banquet where a nice meal and a wonderful private car show was seen. A couple members left on Saturday morning before the banquet to spend the day at Hartville Kitchen, Marketplace and Flea Market.  That’s one place that I can confidently say if you’ve never been there you should go. But plan on it taking the entire day!

Unfortunately, the Flying Quails will be closing this correspondence with some very sad news. Mr. Arlyn Snyder went to be with our Heavenly Father on Sunday, May 31. He will be missed very much and our thoughts will be with his wife, Judy, and family.

Now Model A activities are in full swing. NEO members held their May meeting in the Helen Hazen Wyman Park in Painesville. Gary Frankel, who came to the meeting as a guest and left as a member; he is now the owner of Al Schlegel’s 1931 Model A Victoria. Gary and Pamela Stevenson of Chardon, owners of a 1931 Model A Coupe, have also joined.

On May 8th,Eleanor Edwards was laid to rest. NEO was represented by Bill and Jo Grof, Marty Hosta, Don Lynch, and Bill Renfro along with their Model A’s.

Carmen Wheeler, Bob’s widow, is now in rehab after a hospital stay.Ken Keener, Chris Wolf, Don Lynch, and Bill Schreiber participated in the Maple Festival Parade

in Chardon on April 25th. Our next parade will be the Mardi Gras Festival in Fairport Harbor on July 1st.

On June 21st, the Lake County Historical Society will hold their annual Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast and NEO will be assisting with the parking of cars as well as displaying their Model A’s. On June 27th the Geauga County Airport will be conducting a Young Eagle Rally and Pancake Breakfast. NEO has been invited to display their cars at the airport.

After the May meeting the members participated in a Scavenger Hunt set up by Al and Laura Gezann. Linda Thirion won the hunt.

Chris Wolf led the following members to the Wadsworth Eagle’s Hall for the Penn-Ohio Spring Banquet: Schreiber, Grgurich, Thirions, Prochs, and Grofs. Marty Hosta rode down to Wadsworth with Tony Torre. The trip down was via I-90, I-271, and I-77. The return trip was via backroads, through Valley View and Bainbridge, north on Munn Rd and Auburn Rd. This was an exceptional backroads tour through the Cuyahoga Valley Park.

Our first tour of the season is now history.  Ten families and six Model A’s went on the Geauga County tour stopping at Fowler’s Mill, Sharon James Cellars, Punderson Lake Lodge, Burton Log Cabin, the Geauga County Airport, and ending with dinner at Bistro 608 at Grandview. The members taking the tour were the Thirions, Keeners, Bill Schreiber with guest Carol, Wolfs, Kragers, Lou Emanuele, Gezanns, Grofs, Witts, and Dynes.

Since our last NEO news, Rich Walters, Marty Hosta, Bill Grof, Ken Keener, and Tom Bradbury have been going to the Ford dealer in Madison to prepare their Model A for the road. The new engine has arrived and as soon as all the parts are received for the transmission, the engine and transmission will be installed in the car. The radiator has also been repaired. The group will be checking the braking system and differential before testing the car on the road.  If all goes well, perhaps the car will join us in the next parade.

A happy note: Tom and Donna Bradbury celebrated their 61st anniversary on June 4, 2015. Congratulations!

On the morning of Saturday, May 16, 2015, seven Model “A” Fords met in Mansfield  to head on to Marion, Ohio  to meet up with our  tour  leaders of  the day Jeff & Valery Johnson to go on to our "Bridges of Union County Tour".  Now with a total of 9 Model “A”s, we drove the back roads of Waldo and Prospect, Ohio and went across the Scioto River. We drove through rain and sunshine and got to go past the Honda R&D facility and the main Honda manufacturing plant where they were loading finished vehicles on the railroad cars for delivery.  After driving a few more miles we came to the first of seven covered bridges.  There was the Big

Darby Creek, the Pottersburg, the Spain Creek, the Buck Run, the Culbertson, the Bigelow, and the Streng Road Bridge, which was the only one not covered. They were built by Mr. Reuben L. Partridge back in the late 1800’s. They have all been renovated and look brand new. After going through the last bridge we headed for the Der Dutchman for lunch and they have that nice shopping area too. After leaving the restaurant, we headed to the Eldchrist Winery where you can

taste test 5 different wines for $5.00 a couple.  After we were done there, I noticed Linda Rachel getting a little giggly but we won’t tell anyone. After leaving the winery and a lot of people leaving with a bag in their hand, we headed to Marysville for our traditional ice cream stop at the Farmhouse Ice Cream Parlor.  We all left there feeling refreshed and ready for our journey back home.  Thanks to Jeff & Valery we had a great day and got to learn about the covered bridges and the one iron bridge in Union County.

The Ridge Runners have had a busy spring and are happy to see warmer temperatures. We had our first picnic at Cook Forest State Park in April.  The snow was still on the ground, and the temperature was just above freezing. The hot dogs and great covered dishes made the event warm even though we were bundled in winter coats, gloves, and scarves.  A few brave little flowers were poking their heads through the soggy soil, and we courageously faced the cold to play a few games. Paul Dudek was the winner in the bean bag toss and won a million dollar chocolate bar. Our prizes are rarely that expensive, but Paul deserved our breaking the bank for his expertise. During an M&M game, we learned that several of the men and women felt that their spouse was the one

“thing” they couldn’t live without (I’m sure that was an answer that kept them on good terms on the ride home), but Paul Dudek surprised us all when he said that he couldn’t live without toilet paper. Don Harvey treated us all with great U.S. flag magnets.  Overall, we had a warm time of friendship even though we had to tramp through snow piles.

In May, we decided on a new restaurant for our meeting. We had been displeased with the service at our normal meeting place, but we found that the new place only had one waitress taking care of all the tables. Needless to say, we are not going back there in hopes of faster, more efficient

service. We devoted the meeting to planning our trip to Bedford, Gettysburg, and Penn’s Cave on May 18-20.

The road trip was a great success. We started with a tour of covered bridges in the Bedford area, and had a great time driving through some and walking through others. We followed this with a trip to Gravity Hill and found ourselves drifting uphill. Our day in Gettysburg was filled with a  tour of  the Battlefield Museum and Battlefield.  We had a great time and learned much about the battle that led to Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.  Next, we were off to Penn’s Cave the next day. After lunch at the Whistle Stop Café, we went to the cave and ended up on a boat that decided that it didn’t want to make the trip. After we entered the cave, the boat engine gave up and left us sitting, waiting for help. Even though some on the boat were a little concerned, help did arrive and we enjoyed the tour. Many thanks to Don and Ruthie Niederriter for planning this excursion for us.
