Letter to Our Readers “Let’s go for a walk on the boardwalk.” This is a phrase spoken millions of times during a typical New Jersey summer. Our boardwalks are an experience and vary widely from town to town. The history of these “planks of wood” and the reasoning for their creation is extremely interesting. Hope you agree after reading this month’s main editorial. The name “Buttonwood Manor” has long been synonymous with fine food, friendly service, beautifully landscaped grounds and banquet facilities, all with a touch of enduring class. This venerable restaurant and banquet facility can add another facet to its list of characteristics: MJ’s Restaurant, which now owns and operates the Buttonwood Manor and MJ’s at the Buttonwood. Read more about all the new renovations and exciting changes taking place at this historic venue. Doug Rockwell started playing guitar at age six; joined a band at age 11 and is now a full-time musician, songwriter, audio engineer and producer. Learn more about this multi-talented music man in our Band Profile. Speaking of multi-talented people, let me introduce you to Shea Terzino, a young woman with many talents and passions. Shea bartends at Ryan’s Pub & Sports Bar in Monroe to the delight of her customers. When not behind the bar, she crafts hair decorations, rides her Harley and cares for her two rescue dogs. Read more about this month’s Mixologist-of-the-Month. On the comedy side, our “relief ” writer, Steve O interviews a true multi-talented entertainer: a comedian, actor, filmmaker and producer with his own video blog. Take a few minutes to read the conversation with Nick Ruggia. Okay, after reading this month’s features and reviewing our many listings of bars, restaurants and entertainment venues, I hope we’ve sparked your initiative to get out and enjoy all that is available in the region to satisfy your leisure time.

The name “Buttonwood Manor” has long been synonymous with fine food, friendly service, beautifully landscaped grounds and banquet facilities, all with a touch of enduring class.

Now the restaurant and banquet facility can add another facet to its list of characteristics: MJ’s Restaurant, which now owns and operates the Buttonwood Manor and MJ’s at the Buttonwood. This is the fourth location for MJ’s Restaurant, also found in Tinton Falls, Neptune, and Middletown.

With the new ownership in January of 2013 came a major renovation of the Buttonwood Manor, which has served patrons in the area for over 75 years. Renovations, according to Andrea Perry, marketing manager for MJ’s Restaurants, include a new 40-seat marble top bar, new wood flooring, and a new sports bar theme complete with plenty of neon signs to light up the cozy, casual atmosphere just enough to exude a touch of warmth and ambience.

Enjoy the tasty food and refreshing libations from the bar as you relax in booths, high-top tables or the bar stools while you view your favorite game on the 21 flat screen TVs. Gather with friends here to enjoy scrumptious appetizers in this upbeat atmosphere that also promotes a “kick-back and enjoy” environment for its guests. In the autumn and early winter enjoy NFL Sunday ticket in season, along with the plentiful appetizers and drinks at wallet-friendly prices.

Happy Hour is available for patrons at the bar Mondays through Fridays which offers drink specials from 4:00 to 7:00

pm; it includes great bargains such as $1.50 off draft beers, $5 glasses of house wine, $4 call drinks, and $6 call martinis. Mondays through Thursdays at the bar offers half-price appetizers from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, and on Fridays, a free hot and cold buffet is provided for patrons from 4:00 to 6:00 pm which may include foods like chicken, pasta and pizza, salads and subs.

And don’t miss the hearty Sunday Brunch from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. It offers custom omelet station, breakfast sausages, waffles, French toast, smoked salmon, assorted cold salads, a chafing station with selections of fish, beef and pasta; a carving station with turkey or ham, breakfast breads and full dessert display with such treats as New York-Style Cheese Cake, and Italian pastries. The Sunday Brunch is a wholesome way for folks to begin their Sundays. It’s $24.99 per person and children under 12 eat for half-price.

Visit MJ’s at the Buttonwood on Tuesday where Tuesday Trivia night is held from 6:30 -8:30 pm. The festive game also offers cool prizes like a New York Rangers jersey, a NutriBullet and an iPod Touch.

Wednesday is Karaoke night at MJ’s where you can sign up for your own few minutes of fame as you take up the microphone and sing your favorite tunes and join in the fun. Thursday offers “Sunset Thursdays on the Deck,” where guests may enjoy cocktails or a meal in the warmer months on the outdoor deck, offering a panoramic view of Lake Lefferts. Friday and Saturday nights at MJ’s at the Buttonwood offer music with a DJ from 10:30 pm through 1:30 am.

MJ’s delicious signature “Big Burger” is a juicy Angus burger topped with Pepper Jack cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, sliced red onion, frizzled onions and Chipotle mayo. Also popular are the wings with traditional buffalo sauce, honey Thai or chipotle BBQ.

Freshly prepared salads are also plentiful such as the Hanger Steak Salad, which presents mixed greens, sun-dried tomatoes, goat cheese, Granny Smith apples, spiced walnuts and cranberries and topped with Hanger steak and finished with a balsamic glace.

Other popular dishes include the Pistachio and Pecan Encrusted Salmon, the Hot and

Spicy Shrimp and the Rigatoni Vodka.

All foods are prepared under the talented supervision of Chef Nick Kouvel, formerly of Sallee Tee’s in Monmouth Beach, who joined MJ’s in 2011 and is known for his homemade desserts.

For patrons who prefer to have a more intimate dining experience, the formal dining room is available where diners will enjoy the same delicious meals in a quieter setting that still offers a wall of windows to view the panoramic scenery of the lake and the pristine grounds.

MJ’s at the Buttonwood is a destination sure to become a habit.

Doug Rockwell has been surrounded by music his whole life and began playing guitar at age eight. Since then his life has been all about music from playing and touring to writing and producing. His family is musically inclined; his dad a drummer, mom a singer and great grandmother an opera singer. After learning guitar he also learned bass, drums and even played trombone in his high school marching band. Rockwell’s music career started early. He has been in bands since the age of 11 and began touring right out of high school with his band Someday Never until the mid-2000s. He traveled the country with this band and even had their song, “The Natural Trend of Breathing,” featured on the PlayStation game ATV Offroad Fury 4. Someday Never marked the beginning of his professional career and he carries nothing but good memories from those days. “I just remember touring around the country and being thousands of miles away from my home and still having hundreds of kids singing my lyrics back to me. That’s definitely one thing that I’ll always carry with me; it’s just an amazing feeling.” It was after playing with Someday Never that Rockwell really got into writing music, though he is in another band now called Lovelectric, which he balances with producing and writing for other artists. Some DJs he has worked with include Laidback Luke, Tiësto & Showtek and Captain Luna. He recently signed to work with multi-platinum producer Isaac Hasson, who has worked with artists such as Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez. He also learned a lot and met the right people to further his career through producer Bill Grainer, who has worked with Jennifer Hudson. From there Rockwell’s professional music career has gained solid footing. “Once you get into the circle you realize how small it really is and everybody knows everybody.” His skills as an audio engineer are really what helps him out as Rockwell (for which he records and produces music for himself), Lovelectric and

others. “That part of making music probably comes in handy more than anything,” he says of his engineering

abilities. “It’s like a ninja without his sword; they must go hand-in-hand.” He went to school in Manhattan to learn audio engineering, but has also taught himself many aspects of it by spending hours upon hours reading tutorials and watching videos on the subject. He also takes as much in as possible whenever he works with another artist. Rockwell grew up on punk rock and is currently rising in the EDM scene, but he appreciates and works on all genres of music. He has written metal, rock, indie, country and even horn arrangements, never discriminating against any genre and willing to accept any challenge that lies ahead of him. “To me, music is music and if you can write a good song it doesn’t matter what genre you’re working in as long as we’re able to give a good product,” he says. Though EDM isn’t something he was into until recently, he gave it a shot and has been successful thus far. “Every genre of music has its own guidelines -- and I don’t want to say rules because there shouldn’t necessarily be rules when it comes to being creative -- but there are guidelines that you follow. Certain things work certain ways. I

had to learn how to adapt to EDM. It wasn’t my first language musically; it was something that I caught onto and it’s another thing I can say I’m able to do.”Rockwell is constantly skipping around and working on different genres of music all the time, but while that seems as though it would be tough he relishes the opportunity to work on so many different project and feels it helps his overall creative process. “Going back and forth, genre to genre is like cleansing your palate,” he says. “You have to try not to get numb to it; you have to remember that you are creating something totally new every time. Sometimes it’s hard to step out of that when you’re doing such similar work.” Every genre of music is formulaic in a way and working on different music and with different artists all the times allows Rockwell to help his mind fresh and his creative process alert. “I like jumping back and forth from genre to genre. It keeps my senses aware and alert and I’m just refreshing myself every time.” You can get news on Doug Rockwell; listen to his music and find contact information on his website -- DougRockwellMusic.com. Be sure to follow him on facebook.com/dougrockwellmusic, and Twitter, @dougrockwell. You can also learn more about his band Lovelectric at facebook.com/Lovelectric.

Shea Terzinoby CLARE MARIE CELANO

It’s all about the bows for bartender Shea Terzino who, to date, has crafted over 100 hair decorations for herself and her family and friends. Using colorful fabrics, flowers, rhinestones and other sparkly decorative embellishments, Terzino crafts just what she’s in the mood for to match her work uniforms or her off-duty duds. Terzino, who tends bar at Ryan’s Pub in Monroe, got tired of the prices of hair decorations and after a quick YouTube lesson, decided she could make her own and spend a lot less money. Once she began making -- and wearing -- her bows, they are the first thing her customers talk about. “And it’s the thing they remember most about me,” she says with a smile. The self-described “tomboy with a bow in her hair” has also crafted bows for her girlfriends’ new babies,

as well as for her two rescue dogs. She also crafts bow holders from old picture frames to repurpose the frames. She uses ribbons as a base on the frames and the bows clip on to them for display and storage. “I typically only make bows for close friends and family. I feel it’s more personal and special when they receive a handmade gift,” she says. “I don’t really sell them because I like being unique, and quite honestly, it’s very time consuming,” she adds. Terzino also works on creative projects with her boyfriend Jeff, a carpenter by trade. “We work well together on home projects. He builds things and I make them look pretty,” she explains. “Last year we did a Make-a-Wish Fundraiser at Ryan’s Pub and Jeff built a wishing well that I painted for the event,” she said. They have other things in common as well, such as riding motorcycles. After getting her motorcycle license Jeff surprised her with a Harley-Davidson Sportster for her birthday. “Two of my favorite sayings are ‘Only a biker knows why a dog sticks his head out of a car window,’ and

‘Four wheels move the body, but two wheels move the soul.’ They both ring true for me personally. Riding is so freeing, and to experience places you’ve been a hundred times before on a motorcycle really changes your perception of them,” she explains. Aside from her bike, her down time consists of

spoiling the couple’s rescue dogs. “They’re our babies and I couldn’t imagine our life without them.”

The Real Boardwalk

EmpiresNew Jersey is a pioneer in many

things. One of those is the shore or beach boardwalk -- more than just planks, the

boardwalk we invented is an experience; the epitome of fun at the beach in the summertime.

According to Dick Handschuch and Sal Marino, authors of “The Beach Bum’s Guide to the Boardwalks of New Jersey,” our original boardwalks began to take shape after a mini railroad building boom, such as that built by a Dr. Jonathan Pitney of Absecon to ferry Philadelphians to the healthy environs of the Atlantic shoreline in Absecon. They then expanded to Atlantic City. By the 1880s, more shore locations were accessible by rail, and hotels sprung up. Enter the origins of the boardwalk: hotel owners did not like the sand being tracked into their lobbies -- and this sentiment was shared by rail conductors. The solution? Lay down a long wooden floor on top of the sand! The authors note, “Although Atlantic City usually gets the credit, it was in Cape May that the first boards were laid down, in 1868. Atlantic City followed in 1870 and, later, was the first to raise its boardwalk.” As crowds grew at the shore in the latter Victorian era, entrepreneurs began to

extend the boardwalk, and add promenades, eateries, arcades and amusements -- giving rise to our modern day boardwalk experience. In fact, amusements first appeared on the boardwalk in Atlantic City in the 1870s.

In their book, Handschuch and Marino provide a delightful description of the Atlantic City boardwalk, written in 1916 by a Pleasantville resident to his mother: “The Boardwalk is a very wide, substantial affair, about nine miles long, being from fifty to a hundred feet from the water’s edge all along. On the side away from the beach are the hotels and then all kinds of shops, such as one would find in any city, except that I would say there were more soda fountains and candy shops than on a regular city street; then there are some moving picture theaters, merry- go-rounds, shooting galleries, and other amusement places. On the beach side of the walk, there are here and there long piers reaching out into the ocean, and on these piers are the principal amusement places of Atlantic City.”

Fast-forward to the modern world, where many towns that dot our 130-mile coastline now have sturdy boardwalks, each with its own identity, from sophisticated to family friendly to more party style.

Wildwoods In far south Jersey, this fabled “two miles of smiles” (actually 2.5 miles of boardwalk) has hosted generations of families. The Wildwoods Boardwalk is festooned with brightly colored rides, souvenir and other shops, games of chance, arcades, and “Boardwalk Foods,” such as funnel cakes. This locale has been honored nationally as one of the top 10 American boardwalks by Forbestravel.com, and one of the 50 authentic American experiences by time.com. It began its hosting duty in the 1890s as a 150-yard wooden stroll. Interestingly, points out VisitNJ.org (New Jersey’s official tourism site), throughout its century of existence, it was moved closer to the ocean twice due to the constantly changing shoreline.

According to the website, “Visiting guests will find an array of exciting amusements, including three of the best seaside roller coasters in the country at Morey’s Piers: the Sea Serpent, the Great Nor’easter – an inverted looping coaster and the Great White – one of the tallest and fastest wooden coasters on the East Coast. Also, giant monster trucks offer a high-speed, bumpy ride along the beach. The Wildwoods’ three large beachfront water parks provide cool relief on a hot summer day – with plunging waterfalls, cool cabanas, spas, hydrochutes, speed slides, raft rides, tube floats, lazy rivers, waterslides, rope swings, water guns for soaking and a 1,000 gallon dumping bucket.” Event-seekers will enjoy Wildwoods’ annual Baby Parade, classic auto and crafts shows, family entertainment nights, weekly fireworks and laser light shows. Also, visitors always rave about the tram cars, originally created for the 1939 World’s Fair and moved to the Wildwoods Boardwalk in 1949, and now carry folks along the lengthy stretch.

One cannot mention Wildwoods in writing without a nod of respect to the Morey family, who built Morey’s Piers. This amusement institution remains family owned and operated since 1969. Voted the third best seaside amusement park in the world by Amusement Today,

Morey’s Piers has over 100 rides and attractions spanning across 18 acres along six beach blocks -- it includes three amusement piers and two beachfront waterparks. Visit Surfside Pier, featuring the Ocean Oasis Waterpark and Beach Club at 25th Avenue, Mariner’s Landing Pier, featuring Raging Waters Waterpark at Schellenger Avenue, and Adventure Pier at Spencer Avenue, all Morey’s properties.

Ocean City Similarly, Ocean City and Gillian’s are also practically synonymous. Gillian’s Wonderland Pier, now in its third generation, began when David Gillian put in a merry-go-round and a Ferris

wheel on the boardwalk about 80 years ago. That Ferris wheel is still there! Now the pier features 38 rides, including the Runaway Train Coaster and the Canyon Falls Log Flume. The family also built the Gillian’s Island Waterpark, to cool off on a hazy hot day, featuring serpentine slides, Lil’ Buc’s Bay (where you can navigate shipwrecks), and the Lazy River.

At the north end of the Boardwalk, Playland’s Castaway Cove amusement pier, on the boardwalk’s northern end, features a wide variety of amusements, including mini-golf. On this 2.5-mile stretch of boardwalk, visitors can enjoy amusements, shop, eat, and lounge on many benches and even rent bikes.

Asbury Park“Everything that dies ... someday comes back,” sang Bruce Springsteen, somewhat mournfully, in his 1981 hit “Atlantic City.” But that refrain applies perfectly to the shore town that began his rise to superstardom. Remnants of this city by the shore’s glory days, in the latter 1800s and early 1900s, are still seen, notably the “Casino,” the carousel building and the Convention Center. Through much-publicized travails of bankruptcies and fits and starts to renovate, Asbury Park’s boardwalk has been infused with passion, positivity and a newfound prosperity. The result is now a hub for artists of all stripes, as well as a touch of sophistication, both blending together symbiotically. The ultra-wide boardwalk is a pleasure to stroll and people watch, and when hunger strikes or the desire for some cocktails, choices are aplenty. The boardwalk has an art gallery and glass studio, a pottery shop, and the Silver Ball Museum, with hundreds of pinball games to gawk at -- and play. Dining includes Stella Marina, McLoone’s Supper Club, Langosta Lounge, Pop’s Garage, Cubacan, Watermark and several casual snack shops. During the summer, visit the annual Jazz Festival and Oyster Festival, as well as films on the beach and fireworks. Point Pleasant “Point” remains one of the most popular family shore outings. Especially among those who love aquariums. Its mile-long boardwalk is festooned with arcade game booths, a carousel, shore souvenir shops, a fun house, a Victorian ice cream parlor and another longstanding amusement complex by an entrepreneurial visionary similar to Morey’s and Gillian’s. According to Jim Futrell, author of “Amusement Parks of New Jersey,” Charles

Jenkinson, who owned and operated soda fountains in Asbury Park and Ocean Grove, opened Jenkinson’s Pavilion in 1928, and the rest is, of course, history. Currently, there is Jenkinson’s South Amusement Park, with children’s rides, and rides for older folks such as the

Swing Ride, Himalaya and Moby Dick; the mile-long Jenkinson’s Boardwalk, teeming with games, mini-golf, batting cage, funhouse and arcade; Jenkinson’s Entertainment Complex (“Jenks”) features nightlife seven nights a week and a party atmosphere with DJs and bands all summer long; and Jenkinson’s Aquarium, a must-see for those who are enthralled with

marine life -- up close and personal. In Point Pleasant, according to visitnj.org, kids can enjoy “kiddie beach shows, Radio Disney events, arts and crafts, hermit crab races, weekly fireworks and pay-one-price amusement evenings and days.” Sharing the nightlife and party scene is the famous Martell’s Tiki Bar, an expansive domain of bar seating, tables and standing room -- to enjoy fresh seabreezes and conversation or dancing.

Seaside Heights Although maligned for hosting a bunch of spirited 20-somethings filmed for MTV for a few years, Seaside Heights has always drawn the youth crowd enjoying their lives to the fullest before true adult responsibilities set in. It is this “anything goes” spirit that characterizes the fun and amusements of the now internationally known town of Seaside -- and its colorful boardwalk. One of the standouts on the boardwalk is Lucky Leo’s arcade. Since 1953, when Leo T Whalen II, leased the space from

Seaside Heights’ Mayor Stanley Tunney, it is still creating memories. (A compelling first-person historical account by Mr. Whalen can be found at luckyleos.com.) Seaside also features Casino Pier, an amusement park that has also been around for several decades; it contains classic children’s rides such as the boats, motorcycles, and speedway whip cars. Family rides include the Tilt-A-Whirl, Moby Dick, Hot Tamales Roller Coaster, and fun houses. Thrill seekers will enjoy the 170 foot tall

Skyscraper where riders are strapped to the end of a crane-like arm and are whipped around at speeds up to 70 miles per hour! Seaside’s Casino Arcade abounds with the latest video and redemption games of chance, plus all of the classic slot machines, skee ball and pin ball games.

Keansburg In late May, 2013, Keansburg’s popular amusement park reopened after being devastated by SuperStorm Sandy. And this year, Keansburg Amusement Park will host its 110th Anniversary on Thursday, August 28th. It will have “Throw Back” pricing all day long

on food, drink and rides. Keansburg Amusements and Runaway Rapids continues to provide family fun -- the amusement park features such memorable rides as Frog Hopper, Tornado, Pharoah’s Fury, Moby Dick, Loop-o-Plane, Looping Star, Wave Swinger, Double Shot, Gravitron, Super Slide, Tilt-a-Whirl, Teacups, Sea Serpent Rollercoaster, Spook House and much more. There’s also the Runaway Rapids Water Park, and traditional games found at Bev & Wally’s and The Game Room. Plus, the famous Go Karts. Jeff Schlegel, a reporter for the Washington Post, asserted: “No place in the country matches the breadth

and depth of boardwalk culture found along the Jersey Shore.”

Nick Ruggia

Editor’s Note: This interview will be in two parts. The second part will

appear in the August issue.

Enjoy the read!

Nick Ruggia is something of a Renaissance man. He’s a talented actor, comedian, filmmaker, writer, producer -- I think you get the idea, he does it all. And he’s half the creative force of the Temple Horses, an online video blog with over 90,000 views. Nick can be found on his Facebook homepage and also at templehorses.com.

Venues-NJ: I know you’re a Jersey guy (Hoboken) and had an interesting upbringing -- your mother and stepfather were National Geographic photographers and your father a poet. From this aesthetic background, how does one go through college as journalism major to the stand-up genre?

Nick Ruggia: I spent a lot of my childhood in the field with my stepdad and my mom. I’ve been to around 35 countries, and spent time with bears, tigers, lions, sharks, leopards and other large predators in their element. I studied journalism at The University of Maryland and thought that maybe I’d be an international reporter in Latin America. I got two internships at National Geographic TV. Then my focus quickly shifted and I wanted to be a cameraman. I went to Costa Rica to write for a newspaper, and on the weekend, with the blessing of the head of NGTV’s Natural History Unit, I tracked and shot spec

footage of the quetzal, the sacred bird of the Maya. The following year I shot spec footage of sea turtles in El Salvador. I had some skill (I’m a world class animal spotter and I can compose a frame) and I think I could have made a life there, but the job I applied for at NGTV didn’t come through.

I had done maybe 40 open mics from age 19 to 23, and I loved comedy but I didn’t think a normal person could become a comic. The financial crisis was in full effect in 2009 and I couldn’t find a job. On a lark, I applied for an internship at The Onion. I got it and I loved it and by early 2010 I started studying sketch and improv at The Upright Citizens Brigade and doing stand-up and viewing it all as some kind of a career path.

V-NJ: I spent the last couple days watching a bunch of your Temple Horses videos. You have a good ensemble group. Do you guys work together a lot?

NR: Temple Horses started as a duo. It’s Ryan Hoffman and I doing the writing, a lot of the production, casting, taking turns directing and acting in every one. There’s a third one of us now, Steve W. Thompson, but he mostly does editing, directing and production stuff. We tend to work with a lot of the same people, because they’re our friends, but we also have a pretty wide net and we’ve gotten to work with some pretty awesome stand-ups that we really respect. We cast a lot from the stand-up scene because that is where Ryan and I do most of our work and our hanging out. We put out a web video every month, we help a lot of other stand-ups produce for their own channels.

V-NJ: Gotta ask, do you have a real job or do you make enough money writing/performing/producing?

NR: Ryan and I decided very early that if we were going to be able to do all of this production stuff that we pretty much needed to have the same schedules. We work corporate video gigs and we’ve been production assistants and cameramen on TV sets. We coach youth baseball in the same league (usually against each other) in the spring and fall. We’re both extremely passionate about the sport, know the game and are pretty good ballplayers in our own right. We make some money doing comedy here and there. The money isn’t great, but there are some opportunities on the horizon that could change all that really quickly. I’m really grateful to even have that as a potential thing at age 27, seeing the way this industry works. Hopefully, one of those things catches on sooner than later and I can devote myself entirely to the art instead of 75 percent of my time it currently gets. To be continued …

Comic Relief

Sadly, Selena Coppack’s aBostonian and doesn’t understand that the only real teams to root for are in NY and NJ. I jest of course (kinda, sorta). Coppack has been performing stand up for eight years and her new book, The New Rules For Blondes, launches in April.

Were you “the funny one” growing up?

I come from a very funny home and my older sister Laurel is a comedian, too. So I wasn’t really ‘the funny one’ at home so much as Laurel and I spent a lot of time writing musicals in our bedrooms, choreographing strange dance numbers, and watching “Saturday Night Live” since age 7. I think that my parents and oldest sister Emily are super hilarious, too. But yes, I’ve always been a bit of a ham and really interested in comedy and performing.

Along those lines, did you do all the school productions? Where’d you grow up? Or rather, if you’re anything like me, where were you raised?

I grew up outside of Boston and I did all of the school plays growing up -- I absolutely loved performing and the excitement of rehearsing and being in shows. I did some professional theater in Boston (at the Boston Baked Theater--now gone) and in high school I became interested in singing, too. I went to college in upstate NY where I majored in English and didn’t do any of the plays on campus; but I was in the only co-ed a cappella group on campus (the Hamilton College Hamiltones) and the improv troupe. After school I moved to Chicago

to study improv comedy further and it was improv that really led me to standup. I did improv for years and eventually I just got sick of working with other people, which makes me sound like a total curmudgeon, I know.

Stand up is very tough. You have to be able to take rejection. How’d you handle your first bomb, unless you’re the one comic who’s never experienced that?

The rejection is definitely hard and it’s something that everyone -- even my comedy idols -- have experienced at some point. Early on I think that I wanted the audience to like me, which can be dangerous territory, especially for female comedians. You have to be confident and feel entitled to be up there with the microphone and that took me a while to figure out -- how to just own the stage and trust myself more. I think of standup as like training a dog -- if you get out there and you’re confident and in control, the audience is with you. But if you exude a sense of nervousness or you seem insecure, they’ll eat you alive. I’ve been doing standup for about eight years and even now sometimes I’ll have a show where I can sense that certain people in the audience aren’t completely on board with me and it makes me feel nervous, but I know to just plow through it and keep on going and eventually I’ll hit on a joke or reference that wins them over.

Is this a means to an end? “SNL”, sitcoms, head writer--what’s your goal?

I definitely don’t think of standup as a means to an end and I think that comedians who do are pretty miserable people. It has to be its own reward or else you’re crazy to do this thing. But as far as my goal, mine is pretty broad: I’d like for my comedy (performance, writing) to pay for my life. I don’t know exactly how that will shake out, but I’d like my job to be what I love to do, which is write and perform comedy. I have a book coming out in April (The New Rules for Blondes, from It Books/HarperCollins), which I hope will open up new opportunities for me. It’s a collection of humorous essays celebrating and subverting the blonde stereotype, but it’s for readers of all hair colors.

O N B R O A D W A Y “It’s not personal, Dick, it’s just politics,” Lyndon Johnson says to a good friend who has suddenly turned into a vanquished foe in “All the Way,” by Robert Schenkkan. Johnson, played by Bryan Cranston in the mighty slab of history that played at the Neil Simon Theater. He infuses that glib phrase with palpable urgency and a whisper of tenderness. There’s no question that he really means what he’s saying. Nevertheless, the words are practically radioactive with irony. For Johnson, one of the great manipulators of men to achieve the highest office in the country, politics was always personal. In Mr. Schenkkan’s dense but mostly absorbing drama, set during the tense first year of Johnson’s presidency, Johnson is in constant motion: slapping backs, putting friendly hands on shoulders, bestowing benevolent smiles on loyal friends, glowering and growling angrily at enemies. While Mr. Cranston doesn’t have the towering stature of the man he’s portraying, he still seems to be looking down at everybody onstage from a great height. All this intimacy, whether it is meant to ingratiate or intimidate, serves but one purpose: Johnson’s own political ends. “All the Way” illuminates in intricate detail how Johnson bent a recalcitrant

A Review

Congress to his purpose, as he labored to pass a signature piece of legislation, the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Riding the crest of his fame from “Breaking Bad,” Mr. Cranston strides onto the Broadway stage with an admirable confidence, as if he’s thoroughly at home. Although Johnson is not the exclusive focus of the play, Mr. Cranston’s heat-generating performance galvanizes the production. Even when Johnson is offstage, the show retains the vitalizing imprint of his performance. The play’s superior first act digs into the strategies Johnson deployed to impress upon a grieving nation his ability to lead. Johnson was famed for his long work hours and sledgehammer energy, and Mr. Cranston’s jet-fueled performance captures the restlessness, the drive, the sheer stamina that the new president called upon to meet the greatest challenges of his career. Johnson is desperate to pass the Civil Rights Act, both to honor his predecessor’s legacy and even more important, he needs a major legislative victory to help secure him a full term in power.

The most pragmatic of politicians, who held in contempt those who preferred to posture over their ideals rather than seek compromise, Johnson works every angle possible to cajole, arm-twist or even gently blackmail the bill’s supporters and its detractors into agreeing on a middle way. Dispatching Senator Hubert Humphrey as a primary liaison to the liberal congressmen and the civil rights groups, Johnson personally takes on the entrenched Southern congressmen, with whom he has always had a cozy rapport. People unfamiliar with the politicking behind the passage of the bill will probably find the play’s intricate, admirably lucid parsing of the president’s maneuvering more engrossing than those who have studied it thoroughly. Nevertheless, “All the Way” will probably have even policy wonks nodding with pleasure: On a set, evoking a congressional chamber, a virtual army of characters come and go. Among the more substantial performances are those of John McMartin, as Senator Richard Russell

watching in dignified dismay as he sees the Southern Democrats’ ability to block any substantive civil

rights bill slipping away; Brandon J. Dirden, as a studiously cool Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., caught between the more conservative and more radical organizations fighting to keep a voting rights plank in the bill; and Mr. Petkoff as Humphrey, whom Johnson disdains as overly conscientious behind his back, even as he dangles the promise of the vice presidency in front of him to keep him in line. “All the Way,” which is the first of two parts (“The Great Society” will debut at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival this summer), is at its most captivating and nuanced in its multifaceted portrait of Johnson. His many contradictions — egoism battling with insecurity, a natural warmth at odds with a violent temper, a true commitment to the greater good alongside sharklike political instincts — are all given their due, and are expertly synthesized in Mr. Cranston’s terrific portrayal.

“The Shore”Bordering a large body of water;

the land distinguished from the sea. Most people are familiar with the phrase, as it conjures up thoughts of relaxation, enjoyment and fun. Jerseyans (or Jersey-ites) are especially familiar with the phrase because in our state it has a much more meaningful importance. We refer to “The Shore” with a bit of reverence and respect. However, this time of year, I keep hearing a comment that tends to puzzle me. The comment: “This time of year, everyone’s down the Shore”. This is expressed by many proprietors of bars, restaurants and entertainment venues located elsewhere within the Central NJ. region. This comment or statement is far from true! Yes, it’s summertime and people do go to “The Shore”, but they don’t go there every week or every weekend. There are many reasons to visit the Shore area, but there are also many reasons why many people would rather avoid or visit less frequently: traffic, lack of parking, crowds, driving risks, etc. I would venture to say that the average Jersey resident might go down to the Shore one weekend a month and maybe 3-4 times mid-week (family time) any given month. This frequency is also affected by the weather forecasts: “It’s too hot, too cool or too rainy to drive all the way down there” If in fact, as a bar, pub or restaurant owner, you are concerned about lost business during this time of year, do something about it. Don’t just sit back and complain…be proactive. Offer your customers (and prospective customers) special mid-week incentives to draw them in to help offset the projected lost weekend business. I’m sure your vendors and suppliers would be glad to work with tage you. It’s to their advantage to do so. Yes, I realize the truism that business takes a dip in summertime, but I’m suggesting you take a positive approach because everyone is not “down the Shore all summer.”
