  • 8 GOMC www.gomcmag.com - JULY 2014

ts been a mixed bag of news in the oil and gas industry recently, but Ill start with the good.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics job numbers for the first quarter of 2014 show promising news for the industry. The first figure that stands out is the 7,000 jobs created in support activities for oil and gas, which is up from 4,500 over the same period last year. Of those 7,000 jobs, 3,300 were created in March alone.

In oil and gas extraction, 4,200 positions were created through March. Thats 1,700 positions more than the same

period last year. The bureau also reports that 400 oil and gas extraction jobs were created in April.

In total, there were 10,800 jobs created in the oil and gas industry in the first quarter of 2014.

One thing that jumped out at me when reviewing the numbers was the fact that only 500 of the 10,800 oil and gas jobs created in the first quarter were filled by women compared to 2,000 of 6,300 in the first quarter of 2013.

In this issue of Gas, Oil and Mining Contractor youll read about three women who found work in the oil and gas industry and havent looked back.

These women are working side-by-side with men, and while they say there

have been challenges along the way, they are happy with their careers and encourage other women to get into the industry.

There are plenty of opportunities for women in the oilfields from mud engineers to truck drivers and everything in between. Its just a matter of getting the right training, working hard and proving yourself.

While GOMC highlights the positive advances in the oil and gas industry, its no secret that accidents sometimes cast a shadow. Two accidents that happened on April 30 show the need for continued

safety training and the need to improve rail transport safety.

Early that morning, two men were killed and nine more injured following an explosion at a drill site in Orla, Texas. The nine workers injured suffered only minor cuts, lacerations and bruising from shrapnel, but two men lost their lives in the explosion.

The Loving County Sheriffs Department said there were as many as 15 people on site at the time of the explosion. According to the sheriffs department, workers for RKI (the company operating the site) were putting in a wellhead and the pressure line built up, resulting in a pressure explosion.

Later the same day, a CSX Corp. train carrying crude oil from the Bakken region derailed and burst into flames in downtown Lynchburg, Va., spilling oil into the James River and forcing hundreds to evacuate. CSX said 15 cars derailed and fire erupted on three of them. There were no injuries reported, thankfully.

News like this can give the industry a black eye. Accidents happen, but most of the time theyre preventable if proper safety measures are followed. Everyone in this industry is responsible for improving safety and making sure these types of accidents dont happen.

And not all the news is bad. Many companies reported strong profits following the first quarter of 2014, and oil production in the Bakken region has reached 1 billion barrels. You can see more news updates in our GOM Pipelines feature in this issue of GOMC.

Also in this issue, we profile BeneTerra, a company thats using its own technology to help with water recycling and reuse. The company, which was formed in 2002, has found a new more efficient way to recycle oil and gas wastewater using flare gas to generate steam. The water is returned to the atmosphere rather than a disposal well thousands of feet below ground.

I hope you can take something from each of these stories and use it to better your own business. GOMC

GOMC

inding ways to reuse and recycle water is becoming increasingly important in the oil and gas industry, and BeneTerra is doing something about it with several existing and new technologies.

We provide water and land management solutions for our clients, which enable them to focus on their core business, says Derek Lowe, operations manager for BeneTerra.

We do everything from large-scale water projects on 600 acres to plugging and abandoning a monitoring well, or installing a monitoring well for a client.

BeneTerra was formed in 2002 with the purpose of enabling the beneficial use of wastewater. Since then most of the companys efforts have been related to water and land management for the oil and gas industry.

While BeneTerra offers a wide range of services for producers, including overall land management, soils investigation, remediation, reclamation, environmental monitoring and regulatory compliance, the companys core mission remains the same to develop beneficial reuse solutions for wastewater streams.

One of the things that sets us apart is that we provide solutions with boots on the ground and the practical hands-on help our clients need to get the job done, says Lesley Pearson, controller for BeneTerra. We dont simply offer the

solution and walk away. We share solutions, find out which one is going to meet our customers needs the best way, and then we use our team to employ that solution for them and operate it on an ongoing basis.

    ROOTS ON THE FARM

BeneTerra has deep agriculture roots that start with the founders of the company.

We have a deep background in agriculture amongst our team and our owner group that came from Kansas. Weve also done a number of agricultural wastewater projects in Kansas and Wyoming, says Adam Zimmer, business development manager for BeneTerra.

Lowe adds that the agriculture background is the foundation of the companys stewardship approach to providing practical and innovative solutions. We help our clients focus on sustainable development that will ultimately take care of water and land. Thats the principle of agricultural roots. If you take care of the land and water today, they will in turn take care of future generations and are often more economically viable. Thats one of our key priorities.

The agriculture background also benefits BeneTerra and its relationship with the landowners it serves.

We listen to and understand what their challenges are, and then we work with the client and the landowner to develop the best-fit solution for their current challenge, Zimmer says.

EVAPORATION TECHNOLOGYBeneTerra is pioneering technology intended to serve as an environmentally

friendly alternative to conventional handling of wastewater created as a byproduct of oil and gas production.

The company has modified existing evaporation technology to cater to the unique operational locations of oil and gas well pads.

When we started, the primary technology that we used was subsurface

drip irrigation for beneficially reusing produced water, for which we have a process patent, Lowe says. Subsurface drip irrigation is not a new technology, we just repurposed it for the oil and gas industry and the needs of our clients in the Powder River Basin.

Recently, BeneTerra has also developed a new submerged combustion evaporation technology called BeneVap Systems.

This unit takes produced water wastewater that is developed as part of the oil and gas life cycle evaporates it and releases clean steam into the atmosphere to reduce the overall wastewater volume by up to 97 percent, Lowe says. BeneVap Systems greatly decrease all associated services needed for an oil well, such as the trucking of water to a disposal well, the wear and tear on the infrastructure and the emissions that are being created by the trucks and the flaring of the gas.

Zimmer notes that the company is utilizing flare gas as the fuel source to evaporate the water.

By evaporating the water and putting it into the atmosphere,

youre truly putting it back into the water cycle.

If you inject it into a disposal well, its gone.

The BV300 which is what the unit is called comes in part from intellectual property acquired by BeneTerra from New Mexico-based Evaporative Systems in late 2013, and a unit designed and tested by BeneTerras Australia team.

Evaporative Systems has used a similar wastewater disposal system for various projects, including landfills and food processing, for more than a decade. However, BeneTerra retooled the technology for application in the energy industry.

Lowe is pleased with the results so far. He says the first unit, which combines the best of both companies,

is already being tested at a site near their headquarters. The first pilot for the unit is right here in Sheridan, on a dewatering project for a client that has a brine pit that needs to be dewatered. 23-foot skid, with accessory pipes. The system was designed to sit in close proximity to a well site and can process up to 300 barrels of water per day. It can also operate on an alternative fuel source if adequate flare gas is unavailable.

Stranded assets are the best fit for the BV300 remote wells located several miles from transmission infrastructure and disposal facilities, Zimmer says. The potential environmental benefits can be huge in those cases.

By evaporating the water and putting it into the atmosphere, youre truly putting it back into the water cycle. If you inject it into a disposal well, its gone, Zimmer says. There are currently no technologies that will pump that water back to the surface and utilize it. If its released into the atmosphere as pure steam, plants, animals and people are able to use it.

AGGRESSIVE PLANSOne of the things Pearson, Lowe and

Zimmer have all noticed throughout the life cycle of BeneTerra is that the oil and gas sector is a volatile market, and service providers have to be able to remain stable through the same ebbs and flows.

As a solution provider, you have to be ready to adapt to the changes in the market, especially as they impact your clients, Pearson says. As our clients plans change, we adapt our solutions to fit, and thats not just specific to oil and gas.

BeneTerras management team of Adam Zimmer, Derek Lowe and Lesley Pearson oversees a small but talented staff of full-time soil scientists, water specialists and agronomists.

We are very heavily science-based and our people have specific technical expertise along with scientific and agricultural backgrounds, says Pearson, BeneTerras controller.

BeneTerra is a partnership of three agribusiness organizations, including Agronomy Solutions, BT Water and NV Yutaka.

NV Yutaka is owned by a brother-sister team who are third generation farmers and ranchers. For over 20 years they have been partners in managing a large wastewater recycling project where they annually reuse more than 1.6 billion gallons of municipal and industrial wastewater for crop production activities.

BT Water is an investment entity owned by a group of professionals who have been owners in a service firm that has provided consulting services to

agribusiness and other industries throughout the U.S. for 80 years. Agronomy Solutions provides agronomic and soil science consulting

services. The company has substantial experience with wastewater reuse and assists in the design and maintenance of effluent irrigation projects where reclaimed water is applied to golf courses, sports fields, parks and farmland.

Zimmer, Lowe and Pearson report to the companys board of directors, which is elected annually by the ownership group.

Most of the companys staff is directly involved with the troubleshooting and maintenance of its projects as well as regular operations.

Our people are really what distinguish us, Lowe says. Were not large in terms of numbers, but were big when it comes to quality. From our owners to our entire team, we have really good people with a common goal of environmental stewardship and finding beneficial use solutions to many of the issues the industries we serve deal with every day.

    BUILDING A STRONG TEAM

Adam Zimmer installs sub-surface drip irrigation tubing with a Bron V250 utility plow. (Photo courtesy BeneTerra)

BeneTerra has an aggressive growth plan laid out for the coming years, according to Zimmer. We believe that both our SDI technology and our BeneVap Systems solutions will be important growth vehicles. With our strong science and innovation background, were confident we will continue to find new solutions and develop new technologies to meet the changing demands and needs of the oil and gas industry.

Its no secret that with a growing population in the world, water is becoming scarce and reuse is becoming an important topic among companies that depend on the valuable resource.

We feel our company is really on the forefront of water recycling and reuse, and we hope to continue to grow those solutions and services, Zimmer says. As a society we are going to have to find more ways to reuse water, and thats one of the founding principles of the company. GOMC

GOMC

n congested gas-field drilling pads, less is often more for oilfield services contractors like Keystone Gas Solutions LLC. So when owner Bob McKeown found he could service customers with one machine

a PACS 1000 vacuum system, made by Elastec/American Marine instead of two, the decision was a no-brainer.

The versatile PACS unit (PACS stands for Portable Air Conveyance Vacuum Systems) provides McKeown with a mini-vacuum truck-like unit that can generate up to 424 cfm of vacuum power, plus a hydraulic pressure washer that produces 3 1/2 gpm at 1,200 psi. Sure, the debris-tank capacity is 1,000 gallons well below what a full-size vacuum truck can hold but its more maneuverable than a large vac truck in the restricted, congested workspaces in which Keystone crews often work, and the tank is large enough to handle most of the jobs performed by the company, based in Perryopolis, Pa.

We tow it with a dually Chevrolet pickup truck, McKeown explains. Its very compact [about 18 1/2 feet long and 6,000 pounds] and has everything we need in just one unit. It provides us with a lot more flexibility, and since its not as large as a vacuum truck, its easy to maneuver in tight spaces.

We looked at other units and have used other [similar] equipment on locations, but most of them didnt have a pressure washer, he continues. So by having one on a vacuum unit, we dont have to bring along an extra truck, which saves us all kinds of time and aggravation, not to mention fuel.

Plus, when you bring along two pieces of equipment, you basically have to bring along diesel power for vacuum and diesel power for pressure washing, plus you have to haul water separately, he adds. The PACS unit has its own 135-gallon freshwater saddle tank.

McKeown established Keystone three years ago. The company rents and sells gas-field equipment and provides roustabout services. It also provides services such as pumping, filtering and transferring water and sludge. The company serves customers within about a 200-mile radius of Perryopolis in the Marcellus Shale play.

Keystone Gas Solutions LLC, Perryopolis, Pa.MACHINE: PACS 1000 portable vacuum system

FUNCTION: Vacuuming up liquids and sludge, pressure washing

FEATURES: 1,000-gallon debris tank; 25 hp diesel engine; water-cooled vane pump (rated at 424 cfm); pressure washer (3 1/2 gpm at 1,200 psi); 45-degree tilt bed for easier dumping

    COST: About $60,000

Jimmy Loomis, from Keystone Gas Solutions, uses the PACS 1000 to clean up a spill at a gas-field drilling pad in Westmoreland County, Pa.

The company owns five PACS 1000 units. Each unit features a 25 hp diesel engine; a water-cooled Jurop vane pump; a 36-inch-diameter rear door; a 45-degree tilt bed; a tandem-axle trailer (16,000 pounds gross vehicle weight limit); and a 6-inch discharge valve.

McKeown generally uses the unit to vacuum up water and mud on drilling sites; spills of all kinds; and transferring liquids and sludge from, say, a pit or tank to a storage pit.

The multitasking unit also saves McKeown time by dramatically reducing the amount of equipment setup and breakdown time. It also reduces the risk of injury because no one has to lift and carry a pressure washer separately. So you save about an hour of setup time, and you dont

have to worry about injuries that can occur when employees carry something heavy, he notes. We can set it up in half an hour and be ready to work. If we used two separate units, it would probably take about an hour and a half to set things up.

That may not sound like a huge advantage, but over the course of a year, the time savings add up. As McKeown puts it: Youre either winning or losing, and everyone is looking for an advantage. Everyone is looking for savings and ways to do things more efficiently.

McKeown also lauds the PACS 1000 for its reliability, a critical factor in the fast-paced world of gas and oilfield services where downtime can cost customers tens of thousands of dollars per hour in lost production. He says the units are real workhorses that perform well, often in difficult environments and terrain. In fact, hes so pleased with the units that hes considering ordering a couple more this year.

The reality is they provide a lot of uptime they work, he says. Time is money, every day.

Losing business is always a distinct possibility in this industry, he continues. Its an extremely competitive environment. Theres always someone ready to take your place. But if you do a great job, provide good service and dont make mistakes, youll stay there youve got to be perfect. Someones always chomping on your heels. GOMC

s Dave Ludwig recovered from back surgery in 2012 he knew he had to find a different career path.

His music business just wasnt cutting it anymore, and his back had paid the price.

I needed to find something a little less destructive for me to do, Ludwig says. Lifting heavy speaker equipment gets

old, so my brother made a remark about cellphone boosters and cellphone signals in the oilfields.

One thing led to another and soon Ludwig was operating Bakken Electronix, offering cellphone boosters to those working in the oilfields of North Dakota.

I found a company called Wilson Electronics and told them who I was, that I was 21 years old, and we got hooked up and got things started, Ludwig says. They sold me one unit at the beginning, I tested it out and by golly it worked great.

Ludwig ordered a couple more boosters and started his new business in mid-2012. He told his friends, who told their friends, and began handing out business cards.

Within that first month we sold 10 units and we were just amazed, Ludwig says. We decided it was lucrative enough, so we ordered a pretty good selection of inventory including antennas, amplifiers and cables. That was what got us started.

Now, two years later, the company has grown substantially with new products

and accessories specifically suited for the oilfields. Ludwigs store offers not only cellphone boosters, but also CB radio equipment, Garmin devices, portable satellite Internet, oilfield navigation and asset tracking equipment.

This has been a growing concept as I went along. Ultimately, at the end of the day, Bakken Electronix is a communication solutions company, Ludwig says. Its not that we want to sell you a product, we want to find you the right product and the right service and pair you up with that.

Of the products Bakken Electronix now offers, Ludwig says one of the most popular has been OilTrax USA oilfield navigation software from SiteFinder GPS. OilTrax USA is a Garmin-based system that allows individuals to search, select and drive to well sites anywhere in the country.

Its software that works on a Garmin, Ludwig says. Insert an SD card and you have turn-by-turn directions to any well site. Its only $200, which might seem like a lot, but when youre a driver and youre being paid by the barrel, going to multiple well sites at night, it can be dangerous using paper directions. With this you can listen for your turns, glance at the screen on your Garmin and be a lot safer.

Another popular product has been the satellite asset tracking devices from RHx Systems, based out of Sioux Falls, S.D.

I heard an ad on the radio here that $65,000 worth of equipment had been

stolen from the oilfields, and they were offering a very sizeable reward, Ludwig says. I went in search of something to track assets so if someone steals it, you could track its location. We found RHx, and thats what they specialize in.

With satellite asset tracking, customers can also recall deliveries, record IFTA mileage and track equipment maintenance.

Ludwigs newest offerings include communication vehicles outfitted with equipment from Nomad Global Communication Solutions. There are multiple vehicle platforms, from standard trucks to Suburbans to semi-sized vehicles. Trailer-mounted units are also available.

The oilfield is not paper and pencil anymore, Ludwig says. Everyone needs to be connected as companies want to know every detail about a well pad. These solutions have cellular Internet capabilities, satellite Internet capabilities, MESH network capabilities and technology designed specifically for emergency services. What drew me to them were the turnkey solutions that can be implemented in a matter of minutes.

Ludwig, 24, doesnt have any employees on payroll, but his dad does help at their home office in Williston, N.D. In the future he would like to see the company grow and add employees.

I want to move into a nice storefront with a receptionist, repair department and possibly rental department, Ludwig says. Controlled growth is key in my mind.

Ludwig has enjoyed seeing Williston grow the last several years thanks to the oil boom.

Ive been out here my whole life. I grew up out here and to see Williston revitalized into a healthy economy is nice, Ludwig says. It got pretty slow, pretty stale for a while, but now that growth is here, Im happy to have it and happy to have new people in town. GOMC
