This Month’s Highlights

Masterpiece Mystery! Endeavour, Series 1 Sundays, July 7 – 28 at 9pm

Before Inspector Morse, there was the rookie Constable Morse. Shaun Evans stars as young Endeavour Morse, before his signature red Jaguar, but with his deductive powers already running in high gear. Learn if Morse’s future on the force is in jeopardy. See how Morse’s love of opera may be the key to stopping a string of killings. Follow Morse as he delves into the murky past of a family that owns a munitions factory and see why Morse must choose between his job responsibilities and loyalty to his mentor.

Secrets Of The Dead: Ultimate TutWednesday, July 10 at 10pm

Ninety years ago the greatest archaeological find in history was made: the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb and its golden treasures. It made Tutankhamen the most famous name in ancient Egyptian history. But the real story has become shrouded in myth — with many mysteries around the tomb unsolved to this day. This special combines the latest evidence from a team of archaeologists, anatomists, geologists and Egyptologists to build the ultimate picture of Tutankhamen.

Tune in earlier that evening for an encore airing of NOVA: Building Pharaoh’s Chariot - Follow a team of experts who build and test two accurate replicas of Egyptian royal chariots.

A Capitol FourthThursday, July 4 at 8 and 9:30pm

Celebrate America’s Independence live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Tom Bergeron (Dancing With the Stars) will lead an all-star cast for a musical and fireworks extravaganza. Viewers at home are front and center for the greatest display of fireworks anywhere in the nation.

Lewis & Clark: The Journey Of The Corps Of Discovery

Tuesdays, July 9-16 at 8pm

Join us for an encore broadcast of Ken Burns’ 1997 production. Sent by President Thomas Jefferson to find the fabled Northwest Passage, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led the most important expedition in American history — a voyage of danger and discovery from St. Louis to the headwaters of the Missouri River, over the Continental Divide to the Pacific. It was the United States’ first exploration of the West and one of the nation’s most enduring adventures.

Charles Allen

Nazi Mega Weapons Wednesdays, July 17-31 at 10pm

In the quest for world domination, the Nazis built some of the biggest and deadliest pieces of military hardware and malevolent technology in history. With brilliant, dark minds and a legion of slave labor at their disposal, the Nazis believed the path to ultimate victory was to out-build and out-engineer their enemies. To them, bigger definitely meant better, and better meant more lethal. This is World War II told from a new perspective.

Secrets Of The Dead: Bones Of The BuddhaTuesday, July 23 at 10pm

When a colonial estate manager set his workers digging at a mysterious hill in Northern India in 1898, he had no idea what they’d find. Just over 20 feet down, they made an amazing discovery: a jar bears an inscription that appeared to say that these were the remains of the Buddha himself. Renowned historian Charles Allen sets out to solve this extraordinary mystery, once and for all.

Tune in earlier that evening for an encore airing of The Buddha — review the life of the Buddha, an Indian sage who gained enlightenment.

Nature: Big CatsWednesdays, July 17 – 31 at 8pm

Nature has put together three specials celebrating Big Cats. In Elsa’s Legacy: The Born Free Story (July 17), learn why Born Free, the book and the film, changed forever the way we think about wildlife. Siberian Tiger Quest (July 24), embarks with conservation ecologist Chris Morgan on a great challenge: to find and film the Siberian tiger. And in Revealing the Leopard (July 31), learn more about leopards, the most dangerous cats and, until recently, one of the least understood.

POV: NeurotypicalMonday, July 29 at 10pm

Explore autism from the point of view of autistic people themselves. Four-year-old Violet, teenaged Nicholas and adult Paula occupy different positions on the autism spectrum, but they are all at pivotal moments in their lives. How they and the people around them work out their perceptual and behavioral differences becomes a remarkable reflection of the “neurotypical” world — the world of the non-autistic — revealing inventive adaptations on each side and an emerging critique of both what it means to be normal and what it means to be human.

WFIU’s New Weekend Lineup

WFIU’s schedule is changing this month, as we move a few programs to accommodate the return of some familiar fare, and add new shows we think you’ll love.

We’re returning two longtime favorites to the program lineup: Living on Earth will appear at 7 on Saturday mornings, with The Thistle & Shamrock in the evening at 8.

Ask Me Another is a new NPR show featuring puzzles, word games, and trivia played in front of a live audience in New York, hosted by comedian and storyteller Ophira Eisenberg. Tune in Saturdays at 1 pm.

That’s followed by Wits, which brings world-class comedians, actors, and musicians to the stage of the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minn. Host John Moe mixes improvisation, sketch comedy, conversation, and music.

Then at 3, there’s The Dinner Party Download, a fast and funny hour of unconventional news, cuisine, and culture intended to help you dazzle your friends at this weekend’s dinner party.

On Sundays we have Fresh Air Weekend, an anthology of Terry Gross’ best recent interviews, at 1pm.

Right after at 2 pm is The Vinyl Café, a Canadian cousin to A Prairie Home Companion, written and hosted by Stuart McLean.

Opera returns to Sunday evenings on WFIU when we welcome back World of Opera to our program lineup after an absence of several years. Lisa Simeone hosts the program, from 6 to 10 pm.

A Gift that Gives Back — Now and LaterCecile, a retired teacher and librarian, may be a woman of modest means, but she has a big heart.

About two years ago she learned she would receive a modest inheritance from the sale of a distant cousin’s property in Florida. She wanted to place a portion of the expected inheritance funds somewhere that would do her some good. She had read about Charitable Gift Annuities (CGA) and contacted Nancy Krueger.

Ultimately, Cecile decided to place half of her inheritance in a CGA for the benefit of both WFIU and WTIU, and kept the other half in her savings account for easy access in case she had unexpected expenses. The gift of the CGA provided her a tax deduction the year she set the plan in motion.

“It is one of the smartest things I’ve done,” she says, “because it allows me to do something for the community and something for myself at the same time. To give a gift and also get something back is just fantastic.”

“When I am gone, my favorite stations will get the remaining funds, and in the meantime, I get an annual annuity payment as long as I live — which is just enough to cover my property taxes each year,” Cecile says.

“This was a happy thing for me! Here was my chance to give a gift to a place that I care so much about and get so much enjoyment from,” she adds. “What could be better?”

A Charitable Gift Annuity provides fixed cash annuity payments to you for life. You receive a federal income tax deduction and a reduction of your taxable estate. Plus, your gift will support the financial future of WTIU. It is truly a win-win situation.

For more information on Charitable Gift Annuities, contact Nancy Krueger, Gifts and Grants Officer at Radio-Television Services, at 812-855-2935 or [email protected].

Explore Three Storied English Castles

Following the success of Downton Abbey, theSunday night lineup on WTIU this summer will include these specials that explore some of England’s most storied homes. While each featured estate’s remarkable beauty is noteworthy, it’s the hidden stories within the homes that set them apart.

Secrets of Althorp – The SpencersSunday, July 7 at 8pm

Visit the home of 19 generations of the Spencer dynasty. Althorp is best known as the childhood home and final resting place of Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales. This special looks at the mansion’s interior and history, providing a fresh perspective on the life of the beloved princess. Apart from Diana, many other noteworthy Spencers have presided over the grand estate for more than 500 years, producing politicians, military heroes, dukes and duchesses.

Secrets of ChatsworthSunday, July 14 at 8pm

This program explores the estate’s extensive grounds and tells, among other accounts, the tragic tale of Billy Cavendish, heir to Chatsworth’s 10th Duke of Devonshire, and Kathleen Kennedy. Kathleen, the sister of U.S.

President John F. Kennedy, married the British aristocrat, only to lose her husband after only four months of marriage. Billy was killed in action in World War II. Four years later, Kathleen died in a plane crash and was buried at Chatsworth.

Secrets of Highclere Castle Sunday, July 21 at 8pm

It may be more famous now than any time in its 1,300-year history as the setting of Downton Abbey, but England’s Highclere Castle has its own stories to tell. See how all the inhabitants of Highclere lived, from the aristocrats who enjoyed a life of luxury to the army of servants toiling “below stairs.” Also find out how the current inhabitants, Lord and Lady Carnarvon, spend their $1 million in annual upkeep funds and what life in a fairytale castle is like today. See page 17.

Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer. Brother of Diana, Princess of Wales.
