July,2012 "I'm Chevy Chase, and you're not." Chase, Chevy
Dear Friends:
I was blessed to spend
some time at Universi-
ty of Dubuque Theo-
logical Seminary stud-
ying in early June. I
attended a lecture by
Dr. Bradley Longfield
called “Presbyterian
Identity: Where Do
We Go From Here?” I
was FASCINATED by
the topic as the Pres-
bytery of Milwaukee
has just begun a
change process. A
group was formed al-
most two years ago
called WHAT’S NEXT.
They were charged
with taking a hard
look at the Presbytery
in terms of what need-
ed to be changed—
radically CHANGED –
to meet the changing
financial picture and
to meet the challenge
of following God
thru the next stretch
of years. Some
things were trou-
bling i.e. we had
closed 5 churches in 5
years, churches were
seeing attendance
and membership di-
minish. You can find
the entire report at
http://www.pbymilwa
ukee.org/uploads/Wh
at%27s%20Next%20F
inal%20Report%2004
-24-12.pdf or I have
a copy in the office.
At Apostle we have
begun our own mis-
sion study. This
group has been
charged with looking
at where we are as a
church now, what we
value, what we see as
our future and what
changes we need to
make to reflect how
our community has
changed so that we
can be of service to
God right where we
are planted. You will
hear more from this
group as the months
unfold; they just had
their first meeting in
June. There is
MUCH that needs to
be studied!! All of
this hard work they
are undertaking,
however, will be put
to good use when you
begin to look for a
new pastor—much of
that work can be
used on the church
information form
(CIF) that is used to
tell pastors who you
are and for them to
see if they might be
the perfect candi-
date!! It is exciting
work and I am anx-
ious to hear and see
what transpires.
As I sat in Dr. Long-
field’s lecture, I found

A Message from our Pastor
ACTS OF APOSTLE
July 2012 ACTS OF APOSTLE
some of his remarks to really
hit home as to how I can help
not only the Presbytery of Mil-
waukee but also Apostle dur-
ing these changing times. The
point he made was that we are
unclear as a church who we
are. Reclaiming our identi-
ty has to begin in our con-
gregations. We have given
up many traditions that told
folks clearly who we were and
what we valued. We have
failed in replacing those tradi-
tions that we have given up.
For instance, we have let go of
Sabbath practice. He advocat-
ed that pastors ask their con-
gregations to try to reclaim the
practice of making the Sabbath
a totally unique day in our ex-
istence as secular pleasures
have won our affection. “The
Sabbath points us to God.” said
Dr. Longfield. What would it
look like if one Presbyterian
congregation decided to really
work on just this ONE aspect,
that of keeping the Sabbath
holy? was Dr. Longfield’s ques-
tion. Could we do it? Could
we get all of our errands done
prior to Sunday? Could we de-
cide we weren’t going out to
eat, not going to fill the car
with gas? Could we have that
kind of discipline?
There is really no compelling
reason to participate in church
if we don’t have a clear pur-
pose and direction. I have felt
for some time that we are just
treading water at Apostle, not
quite knowing who we are any
longer. We are complacent
and don’t have a distinct mes-
sage that makes others talk
about or think about faith out-
side our church walls.
As I listened to Dr. Longfield, I
wondered what IS next for the
Presbytery of Milwaukee—for
Apostle Presbyterian Church—
for what we call the big C
church, meaning all religious
entities? How can I help?
What is God calling for me to
do in this time and in this
place? Can I adopt a spiritual
practice that might help not
only others know me as a true
Christian but also help me bet-
ter define myself as a Chris-
tian? Can I ask Apostle to join
me on my journey of trying to
keep the Sabbath? Can I help
Apostle be CLEAR about who
they are and where they are
headed?? I came away obvi-
ously with more questions
than answers but I love that!!
As I ponder these things, I look
forward to hearing from you
how you see Apostle? The PC-
USA? How do you see that you
can help? What do you see
that needs to be changed and
what do we need to do to make
those changes? Where do you
see God is working in your life
and how can you use that to
further the cause of Christ?
I started this with a quote
from Chevy Chase—this quote
has ALWAYS made me laugh.
But today, I am not laughing
as we say “I am a Christian
and you are not” I wonder if
those folks who are not, have
seen my lack of identity, my
lack of a spiritual practice, my
lack of a clear purpose of direc-
tion and thought that they did-
n’t WANT to be a Christian if
that is what it means!!! A so-
bering thought to be sure!!
I ask to hold folks in prayer
who are tasked with studying
our identity and our changing
needs (mission study) —Penny
DeCamara (moderator), Laurie
Sether (Secretary), Sandy
Shotton, Nan Granrath, Larry
Petrus, Mike Lempke, Kari
Wegner and Judy Puschnig.
We are blessed that these folks
care enough about our church
to want to spend time search-
ing. THANK YOU from the
bottom of my heart goes out to
these folks!
The GOOD news is we are not
in this alone; many churches
around the globe are in the ex-
act same place. I see the Spirit
at work here daily. I know
that we are going to have to
“think outside the box” in or-
der to follow the Holy Spirit’s
leading. But we serve a God
who is walking next to us dur-
ing this changing time. I can’t
imagine anything better!!
See you in church!!!

New Beginning spent a wonderful weekend at Ky Simono and Jeanne Anderson’s lake home.
This is not a cottage but a beautiful home. The fellowship was wonderful and the food was
great. Relaxation was certainly on the menu the whole time. Ky’s brother in law drove his pon-
toon boat over to Ky’s to give us a tour of the lake and the beautiful landscape surrounding it.
Lots of deer, even little fawns, turkeys and lots of colorful birds. Jeanne even has a golf cart to
drive back and forth from the house to the lake. Doesn’t get better than that! Dave and Colton
gave the fish a little work out. A great time was had by all. New Beginning gives a heartfelt
thank you to both Ky and Jeanne for opening up their beautiful home to all of us..

Senior Moments ended its spring season with a wonderful program of music by the band “One More Time” Our own Terry Sweek plays trumpet with the band and has for many years. The music was enjoyable and made it difficult to sit still. You could look around the room and people were swaying back and forth, tapping their toes or just simply enjoying the sounds of music from the big band area.

SENIOR MOMENTS GRAND LAST SPRING
PROGRAM…..
I have missed coming to church a lot, but I have been quite busy. I have finished my 1st year of
college! I am attending University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. I am majoring in Secondary Math
Education, and double minoring in Secondary History Education and Theatre Education. It was a
pretty challenging freshman year, but am proud of the outcome. I made the dean's list with a 3.4
GPA my 1st semester, and am hoping to get on it again with a 3.5 GPA my 2nd semester. I am
glad to have a little break before year two. I have made many friends, but have also stayed
friends with people from high school!
This Summer I am working a lot at Peek-A-Pet Lodging. I am hoping to make enough money to
buy a new car. I am also planning to read all the books in my bookcase (which is a lot), and spend
a lot of time with my family. What I am most excited for is to see my dad racing again. I am hop-
ing to also spend a lot of time writing, since that is one thing that I love to do. I can't wait to see
everyone at church again! WAY TO GO BECKY

Becky Schicantek will be a Sophomore in College…WOW
Emily Rogers now works in downtown Chicago…. Exciting
Emily was in church Sunday and looked wonderful. Emily is a Child Life Specialist in a large
Children’s Hospital. She shared that the hospital she works at “Ann and Robert H Lurie Chil-
dren’s Hospital” moved to downtown Chicago three weeks ago. It is a wonderful facility for
children, much like our Children’s Hospital in Wauwatosa.
This new facility was built next to “Prentice Hospital” where approximately 13,000 babies are
born every year. There is a bridgeway directly to the hospital which allows premature babies
or babies born with health concerns, to be transferred to the hospital in minutes. Emily is
lucky to be able to take a bus to work which takes about seven minutes. No daily driving to
downtown Chicago for Emily. Emily loves her job and is really good at it. Congratulations!!
Greetings from Africa! We truly appreciate your partnership with us and your commit-ment to sharing the gospel through international medical missions. In February I spent three weeks at Nkhona Hospital in Malawi covering the pediatric ward for PCUSA missionary Dr. Barbara Nagy. It was the height of the rainy season so they were inundated with malaria. Sadly malaria still kills 2 children per minute in sub-
Saharan Africa. The first day I arrived there were 148 children on the ward which was down from an average census over 200. Most children had malaria and most were under 5 years with little immuni-ty. Only the most ill are hospitalized, those needing IV medication, oxygen, a blood transfusion for severe anemia and heart failure or anticonvulsants for seizures and coma. The vast majority survive with rapid care. Besides malaria, pneumonia, malnutrition, diarrhea and dehydration, AID’s and TB are common. Sometimes people delay seeking care due to fear of witchcraft and attributing illness to curses. While at the hospital I prayed everyday with mothers asking for God’s wisdom and healing. Hospital chaplains also met with families to talk, pray and witness in Chichewa. The harvest is plentiful! There are preventions for malaria such as bednets and indoor spraying of huts but people live on $1/day so these are not always used. Take joy in knowing you have helped to restore many to life and health. May God bless you as you have blessed others. Isaiah 58:10-11 In Christ, Amy McAuly, MD

Presbyterian Women News: Hope Circle Update:
In June, 87 cool ties were mailed to The Ships Project for military men and women serving in places with sweltering temperatures! Thank you to all the women who helped make them.
The following thank you was received:
“We are sitting out here in a place even the good Lord has forsaken, and morale sucks despite the best efforts of the command. Then we got the boxes from The Ships Project and are all smil-ing comparing. . . those neck cooler things. It’s so cool to know some strangers care about us out here. If we would always get treatment like this I’d stay in the navy forever.”
Hope Circle will next meet on Thursday, August 2
nd at 10 a.m. NO July meeting!
Call Shirley Anderson (546-2476) or Marilyn Stone (1-262-763-0918) for additional information.
On Sunday, June 24th, the
many gifts of Apostle women were celebrated. Some Apos-tle women shared samples of their gifts of painting, stitchery, quilting, knitting, baking, can-ning, photography, crocheting, gardening, scrapbooking, and sewing which were are part of a wonderful display. There are also many gifts of Apostle wom-en that are not represented by a tangible item. These gifts of
service and ministry were also lifted up which include ushering, lay leadership, organizing cof-fee hours, providing funeral luncheons, preparing meals for shut-ins, providing leadership in Christian Education, serving as a ruling elder or deacon, provid-ing leadership for and serving on Session committees, provid-ing rides, praying, singing, play-ing the piano or organ and vol-unteering at the Guest House to
name a few. The women of Apostle are gifted in many amazing ways! Thank you to all the women who shared their gifts in wor-ship and those who brought items for display.
It is time to order the 2013 Mission Yearbook for Prayer and Study!
This book is a daily devotional resource with 365 inspiring mission sto-
ries that come from next door and around the globe. It inspires many
Presbyterians daily as they uphold the mission of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) in prayer. The cost per copy, $16.95 plus shipping
costs, reflects a significant increase since we are no longer able to or-
der through Presbytery. If you are interested in purchasing a copy,
please let Marilyn Stone know by July 8th.

A total of 21 pair of socks for men, women and children were collected on “Sock it to Poverty” Sunday, June 10th! These socks will be combined with those collected on July 8
th (our next “Sock it to Poverty” Sunday) and donated to homeless veterans shel-
tered at VETS Place Central. Thank you so much for your generosity! On any given night, reportedly there are about 200 to 250 homeless veterans in Milwaukee that can be docu-mented. Since 1994, VETS Place Central has provided
transitional housing for homeless vets. It has a 72-bed facility for homeless male vets located at 3330 W. Wells Street, and apartments for homeless female vets and their children. Additional services are provided to help these veterans who find themselves homeless, get past some of the stumbling blocks that might be in their way.

well-articulated. Also an update was
provided on the Life of an Athlete Stu-
dent Training.
Tuesday, July 17, come with your family, friends, congregation, faith community, school or oth-
er organization for a celebratory evening at Miller Park with the Interfaith Conference of
Greater Milwaukee. Donate food for the Hunger Task Force, wear “Going to Bat for a Better
World” t-shirt and see an exciting Brewers-Cardinals game.
For the past two years, we also have been given the honor of having one of our participants
throw a symbolic first pitch on the playing field before the game. If we sell enough tickets to
qualify for that again, we’ll conduct a drawing and let a lucky boy or girl have the thrill of pitch-
ing from the mound to a Brewers catcher.
We handle all ticket and t-shirt sales online for individuals or groups.
This is a great opportunity for Apostle to have fun and work together with our larger communi-
ty for the good cause aided by the Hunger Task Force.

On the 20th of June, about 20 members of Valley Community Presbyterian Church in Golden
Valley, MN stayed at our church while they were here participating in a service project in the City
of Milwaukee. There were about fifteen young teens and about five adults who worked on an
ecology project for the Urban League of Milwaukee.
These youth were delightful to meet and very
respectful of our building. Sarah Bigwood is the Youth
and Young Adult Director at Valley Community
Presbyterian Church and served as the leader of this
mission trip. She was as delightful as the youth.
Sarah was very grateful for our invitation to stay here
and thanks Apostle folks for being so welcoming.

June 11, 2012 Meeting
Presentation by Elder Keith Pierce from Brookfield Presbyterian Church:
“Session Structure and Size Study”
This was a very interesting presentation, which gave our session a lot to process, as we look to
the possibility of making changes to our structure as well.
The areas of discussion were:
Session Size, Terms, Committee Structure
Change Process
Training and Documentation
Session Focus and Communication
Received a call from a woman who left a message Thursday evening June 7th at 10:15 pm about
the sign on the front of our church. “When you are down to nothing, God is up to something”.
She left a 10 minute message on how true this statement is. She is Catholic and stated that
we don’t let God be God. She said the sign just hit her in her soul and was very uplifted by
it. She was almost in tears and said “ I hope your congregation continues to do good work,
you seemed to be very blessed”
The Clerk will take Session minutes to Presbytery for review, August 22nd at Faith Presbytery
The kids from Valley Church in Minnesota have a requested a suggestion of a project they could
do for us to thank us for allowing them to sleep at Apostle for four days June 20-24. Hazel
Johnson suggested they could clean the carpets in the Sunday school area. Great idea!
Motion to allow Angel Tree to use Apostle to give out back-packs on August 11 for one hour 10
AM to 11 AM. Approved
Motion to allow Crossroads Kids Club to use our building on September 14/15 for training
Christian Educators and Pastors and Pastors from all around Milwaukee. Approved
Cathy will attend and will bring more information about Apostles' possible involvement with
Crossroads Kids Club in West Allis.
Presbytery wide (and even FURTHER as all churches have been invited) workshop on change--
June 26 1 PM to 3 PM offered by the Presbytery of Milwaukee, will be held at Apostle.
Cathy will be starting another class with Dubuque Theological Seminary this August---12 week
class on preaching Advent-- In December she will start a class with Dubuque on church ad-
ministration.
Presbyterian Women decision on special events policy:
1. The PWCT affirmed that Presbyterian Women want to continue providing funeral lunch-
eons to grieving families.
2. The PWCT will strive to be a positive, supportive and inclusive group of women within
our church, that includes accepting different ways of providing ministry to others and
committed to carrying out the PW Purpose. Marilyn Stone, Moderator of PW
Tony Brzyonkala, Church Treasurer, is recuperating at home and doing well. He is able to per-
form his job functions while Dean Puschnig is still helping by taking church deposits to the
bank weekly.
The purposed dates for WOW are October 3 thru November 7th and February 13th thru March
20th, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Since this is promoted as an intergenerational event, our focus
Page 12
SESSION HI-LIGHTS
this year will be to make it more intergenerational. Since the Cushing’s have retired from cook-
ing, instead of relying on just one or two people, this year we will be asking different people/
groups to cook each evening. Each dinner will have a theme and dinner will be served in fel-
lowship hall at the round tables, encouraging fellowship. The proposed cost is $2.00 per child
and $3.00 per adult each night, with a limit of $6.00 per family. Scholarships will be availa-
ble. We have curriculum for the teen class and are still reviewing curriculum choices for the
children and adult classes.
Youth night will be held on the 1st Sunday of each month from October thru May. It will be open
to all school aged children (1st thru 12th). The focus this year will be service projects within
Apostle and in the community.
A focus this year of the CE Committee is programs during the week for adults.
Motion to start January 2013, the “Reading the Bible in a Year” for all ages. This program in-
cludes a booklet that gives the daily Bible readings to keep everyone on track. Approved
The daily readings include scripture from the Old Testament, New Testament and the Book
of Psalms or Proverbs. Participants are also encouraged (but not required) to attend a
monthly class to talk about what they have read.
September 9th will be the fall Sunday school kick-off and Teacher/Sunday School Mission coordi-
nator dedication during worship. We will hand out Bibles to the 3rd graders during the Sep-
tember 16th worship service.
Motion to allow Mark and Brenda Thomas to remodel/repair one bathroom at this time, at a
cost of approximately $1000 and to make announcements to the congregation giving them the
opportunity to give monetary gifts towards this project if they desire. Approved
Five bathrooms have been identified as needing update and repair. The women’s bathroom
across from the library is the bathroom the session has requested they complete first. Finan-
cial support will determine how many bathrooms will be completed.

Thank You! Thank you so much for the overwhelming support during Mike’s treatments. All your prayers have helped immensely as recent test results show his cancer is in remission! We have truly been blessed! The care and concern that has been ex-pressed in a variety of ways has been appreciated beyond measure. Mike and Marilyn Stone Thank you for allowing us to camp at your church while on our recent mission trip to Milwaukee. Because of
your support, we were able to find rest from our journey in which we helped The Urban Ecology Center contin-
ue their effort to restore the Riverside and Washington Parks. This was a life changing event for all of us in-
volved and you helped make it possible.
You have a wonderful church and we enjoyed connecting with your pastor Cathy Manthei. Please, thank your
janitor for his quiet but efficient ministry. Your kitchen was amazing and we hope that you will forgive the
misplacement of a few items, we tried to put everything back the way we found it.
In extending such hospitality, you became welcome stewards of our mission trip, providing us with gifts be-
yond measure. May God continue to bless your church and your ministry and if you are ever in the position to
send your youth on a mission trip, I hope you will consider visiting us in Minnesota.
Sincerely,
Sarah

MORE THANKS………….
The Mission Partnerships Team of the Presbytery of Milwaukee wants to
thank you and congratulate all of us. Working together has its rewards. Of
course, the work accomplished is the most important thing, but our work to-
gether as the Presbytery of Milwaukee has been recognized nationally. We are in the "top ten"
in two categories of mission giving: (1) total giving by average per member and (2) basic mission
support by average per member. Thanks for your generosity and outward vision. Let's keep up
the good work for the Kingdom of God!

“I’ve been to church, I’ve read The Book.
I know He’s here but I don’t look near as often as I should.
His fingerprints are everywhere,
I just slowed down to stop and stare.
Opened my eyes and man I swear, I saw God today”
from the song “I SAW GOD TODAY” by country star George Strait.
