OU ARE looking for a seat...the au-ditorium is packed today! All depart-ments are buzzing

about this mysterious executive address. A new organization-wide campaign is being unveiled by the newly named CWO. That’s right: The Chief Wellbeing Officer.

Such a scenario is far more like-ly to occur than you might imag-ine. Since last June, the Center for Spirituality & Healing has been meeting with interested corporate

partners to explore a deliberate program offering that would edu-cate their company leaders about wellbeing practices and how lead-ership in this area can increase the capacity of an organization to in-novate and sustain performance in an increasingly interconnected, complex and dynamic world.

WELLBEING LEADERSHIP PROGRAM: WHOLE SYSTEMS APPROACH

“Wellbeing Leadership is a whole person, whole systems ap-proach to developing leadership skills in the face of complexity and challenge,” believes Center Direc-tor Mary Jo Kreitzer. “Of course, wellbeing is often looked at indi-vidually, or personally, but it’s a powerful challenge to think of it organizationally. The companies that address the full ‘wellbeing’ of their organizations and prepare

their leaders to act with both inten-tionality and innovation in these areas will continue to distinguish themselves in the eyes of their em-ployees and their consumer base.” One person who has lived through profound shifts in cor-porate culture—and wellbeing—is Karen Poel. Poel, who recently accepted a position at Lifetime Fitness as Senior Director, Kids Activities and Aquatics, is a Cen-ter Advisory Board member and Wellbeing Leadership faculty. Poel leveraged her own personal and

professional experiences to con-tribute to the Center’s new offer-ing. After graduating from Har-vard Business School, Poel found a passion in the world of retail. After years of working in strate-gic positions for Dayton Hudson Corporation and Marshall Fields, she found herself in crisis in 2005 when her company was acquired by Macy’s in an industry consoli-dation move. For the first time

in her career, the strategies that had served her so well, no longer seemed to matter or to work. “I had to develop new ways to deal with change, chaos, and com-plexity for my own wellbeing, that of my team and that of the organization. Basically, I learned to relax within intensity and was surprised to find that my team and I achieved better results.” In cultivating a happy and fulfilling life, Poel had her own reservoir of resources to pull from

in times of emergency. A lifelong athlete also known to run mara-thons, she called on that discipline when dealing with the magnified stress at work. “Not only would I do Pilates but I’d also run eight miles,” she says when describ-ing her preparation for particu-larly stressful meetings where she knew her leadership would be tested. “I would get myself totally pumped up so I could be as ener-getic and authentic as possible.”

USE STRESS-REDUCING TECHNIQUES

Using other techniques to reduce stress and stay mindful, Poel realized that her team could also benefit from the practices. “Here I was using skills like visualization that I knew worked, so I passed some of them along to my colleagues to help us all stay afloat.” “Karen has been instrumental in the conceptualization of our Wellbeing Leadership program,” says Kreitzer. “She brings such a

Its mission is to provide a direct, experiential understand-ing that wellbeing practices em-bodied and fostered by leaders not only improve the health of individuals and teams, but also increases the capacity of an orga-nization to innovate and sustain performance in an increasingly interconnected, complex and dy-namic world. Wellbeing leaders will

gain skills that enable them

to:

• Understand the value of their own wellbeing, the wellbeing of others, and the impact this has on the organization.

• Develop and maintain well-being practices and leader-ship skills in the face of com-plexity and challenge.

• Recognize and work with patterns at a whole person and whole systems level.

• Evoke innovative thinking and allow answers to emerge from diverse perspectives

• Take adaptive action that transforms individuals, teams, organizations and the larger community and leads to sus-tainable practices and results.

• Energize positive change by making wellbeing conta-gious!

1. Health: All aspects of health are included —physical, emotional, men-tal and spiritual. Rather than an emphasis on perfect health the focus is on increasing functional capacity and vitality.2. Purpose: Having an aim and direction gives life and work meaning. The spark to express an individual, group or commu-nity vision can be the motivating force of change and innovation.3. Relationships: Our so-cial connections and networks,

including social sup-port, have a profound effect on wellbeing. This includes finding a balance between giving and re-ceiving; expressing the inter-de-pendency of a whole system.4. Community: Resources such as capacity and infrastructure (jobs,

schools, transportation, green space); engagement

(participation and connec-tions) and empowerment (ca-

pacity for taking action).5. Environment: We are part of an inter-dependent planet, rely-ing on clean air, drinkable water, a world free of toxins. Access to nature sustains and nourishes body, mind and spirit.6. Security: Wellbeing relies upon meeting the basic human needs - stable employment, sufficient fi-nances, and day to day safety.

ISTORY IS a great teacher (sometimes). It is also said that, “history

is written by the victors.” This implies a certain bias. And to-day, powerful interests control mainstream information and education. (Thankfully, Essential

Wellness is independent media!) So, who are these “power-ful interests” anyway? The vis-ibly powerful include various captains of industry. Primarily H

the financial, energy, manufac-turing, agri-biz, chemical and medical industries. The health-care industrial complex includes the insurance industry, medical

manufacturing and services, and the pharmaceutical industry. But make no mistake; all corpo-rate “industry” has an impact on our health.

MODERN MEDICINE VICTIM OF OWN SUCCESS

Wellness can be complicated. Each human being is a highly complex integration of innu-merable biological systems and processes, as well as influencing environmental cofactors such as chemical toxicity and EMFs. It is ironic that mainstream medicine, considered by some to be reduc-tionist, sterile, technological, and mechanistic and compartmental-ized, is actually the consequence of many truly great advances in specialized knowledge by re-searchers. In a real sense, the modern medical paradigm is a victim of its own success. Medi-cal overspecialization has resulted in a nonintegrated healthcare system that often seems dysfunc-

tional. Well meaning medical spe-cialists simply do not have time to keep up with the explosion of information about the differ-ent specialists’ specialties. There is a disconnect, so critical infor-mation that may pertain to an individual patient might be un-known to the treating physician. It is understandable that our human intellect is attracted to the exciting, cool “new” (we are after all, only human). A new movie, new technology, new in-formation, new medical therapy, new “magic-bullet” drug, and so on. Still, must it necessarily fol-low that we reject ancient wis-dom to replace it with what is newest? Is it possible that some of the information given to us by the history-writers is misleading? After all, corporations do have a mandate to make a profit (our health may not be the priority).

Are you more than your parts?

USE DISCERNMENT WHEN CONSIDERING NEW THERAPIES

Human progress and scien-tific inquiry are very important. Because obviously, we can im-prove. However, implementation of any medical therapy should be tempered with discernment. Modern techno-medicine is so fragmented and incoherent that it can put the patient’s health at risk. Newest does not always mean best. History can provide us with some perspective here; the Science Museum of Minne-sota has an informative exhibit titled “Questionable Medical De-vices.” It is worth a visit: http://www.smm.org/exhibitservices/history/collections/gallery/9 What we call holistic, or “en-ergy medicine,” has in fact been used for healing by most of hu-manity for many thousands of years. If the value of therapy was based solely on how long it has been around, and how long peo-ple have thought that it was help-ful, then holistic medicine would be the most effective treatment known to humankind. Clearly,

ancient healers were on to some-thing. And, holistic medicine practitioners are still practicing today simply because the therapy is effective. Leading-edge high-tech medical research is now ex-ploring the realms of the ancients. Essentially all matter (including us) is comprised of atoms. Al-ways in motion, atoms function dynamically with electrons, pro-tons, and neutrons (quantum mechanics breaks it down even further). Also, the earth is a giant electro-magnet which influences our biology. Good holistic medi-cine practitioners consider the whole health picture and influ-encing environmental cofactors.

CONSIDER THAT WELLNESS IS MORE THAN ABSENCE OF DEATH

Keep in mind that authen-tic health is a state of compre-hensive wellness, not merely the absence of death. Fundamental wellness provides many tangible benefits, including a joyfulness at the cellular level. Do not be fooled, this is not rocket science; optimum health can be achieved

through simple health promoting behaviors. Although, sometimes therapy is necessary for an acute or chronic condition. Then only safe, well understood, proven therapies should be considered. Often, holistic healers are not of-ficially sanctioned by the medi-cal industrial complex. Do not be mislead, this does not mean holistic therapeutic protocols are ineffective or unsafe. This also does not mean all conventional medicine is safe, there may be conflicting interests involved (do your own research). Having trust in the healer is important in all healing. Learn for yourself who you can trust. You must protect your own health by making sure any therapy or medical tests you agree to be safe. Although this can be challenging, you have much to gain (or lose). Investing time and energy in your health is far less costly than paying for ill-ness. From a holistic perspective, the immeasurable self-healing capacity of human biology sur-passes a techno-medical com-partmentalized approach. Quan-tum science proves you are more

than your parts, much more. To ensure a brighter future for our-selves, our children, and our plan-et—wellness is essential. Be well.

HERE’S SOME-THING for ev-eryone.” T h a t ’ s

the comment we hear about the Integrative Health Education Center at Normandale Commu-nity College. Wellness travels many paths and we have watched this com-ment grow stronger as holistic therapies have expanded and be-come more mainstream. Holistic therapies are rarely called “alter-native” any longer and have even moved past the “complementary” term. It is now about integrative health and healing.

INTEGRATIVE HEALTH COMBINES CONVENTIONAL & HOLISTIC THERAPIES

Integrative is defined as com-bining or coordinating diverse el-

ements into a whole. Integrative Health provides therapies that combine with traditional health-care methods to provide a com-plete healthcare solution. Indi-viduals and medical professionals are discovering that combining traditional healthcare with holis-tic therapies can provide better health solutions and outcomes. At Normandale we have a solid base in traditional health-care as well as holistic therapies. We are the bridge that allows the integrative experience to unfold. Individuals today are becoming their own health advocates. They don’t just “take what the doctor ordered” any longer. They ask family, friends and business col-leagues for advice, research on the internet, and even listen to Dr. Oz. At Normandale, we are visioning, educating and training for this continual expansion of integrative health.

Interest in integrative work-shops and series certificates by healthcare professionals is grow-ing: physicians, nurses, physical therapists long term care, hospice, social workers, psychotherapist, rehabilitation therapist, surgical technicians, dieticians & nutri-tionist, anesthesiologist, dentists, dental hygienist, public health administrators, directors, and many more. In addition, more health associations and organiza-tions governing these groups are including integrative therapies as CE (continuing education) op-tions for healthcare professional development.

WIDE-RANGING ARRAY OF COURSES AVAILABLE

At Normandale, there is truly something for everyone. If you are completely new to holistic therapies you can take an intro-

stand out. Recently, a director of long term care said “we’re al-ready at the point where nurses, health aides and other medi-cal workers are expected to have some exposure and training in a holistic modality to pro-vide additional patient support. Recently, a local TMJ dental clinic paid for each employee to take an integrative therapy class at Normandale. The purpose was focused on patient comfort and care, with a commitment to creating a calmer experience for their patients. They took Breathwork, Emotional Free-dom Techniques, Interactive Tapping for Recovery, Medical Hypnosis, Medical Homeopa-thy, Energy Works, Reiki, and Sound Healing Basics as foun-dational integrative courses. This is a perfect example of integra-tive care, combining traditional healthcare with holistic therapy. EXPANDING WELLNESS IN THE WORKPLACE

F YOU’VE been has-tened by spirit’s call to provide holistic health-care as your life’s work, you may have grappled with the concern, “can

I make money doing this?” All too often people spend good money on an education in ho-listic healing and end up having to supplement their income with other work. What’s worse, never having a practice at all for lack of clients?

WHAT IMPEDES A FINANCIALLY SUCCESSFUL PRACTICE?

Healers aren’t business mo-guls. One of the biggest mistakes made in the healing industry is that practitioners lose sight of the fact that their practice is, indeed, a business. While healing is often very instinctual for those lead to this career path, business-mind-

edness is not usually so innate. Practitioners need to be taught these principles just as they were taught the principles of bioen-ergy healing science.

HEALERS DON’T START PROMOTING THEMSELVES EARLY ENOUGH

Most students wait for their diploma before they start to an-nounce their presence to the community. Big mistake. The curriculum at the school ought to be teaching and instilling mar-keting and promotion of the stu-dent from the beginning of the program.

HEALERS DON’T UNDERSTAND THE POWER OF CREATING A NICHE

Creating a niche will lead to a broader base of clients. When a niche is established, even those

outside of the niche see this and they start to build on it. A practitioner who specializes in orthopedic diseases quickly morphs into a sports injury practice. This equates into an endless stream of clients. Find-ing and developing the niche is the part that takes some doing.

SCHOOLS DON’T TYPICALLY PROVIDE EDUCATION ON BUSINESS

Bioenergy healing pro-grams offer all sorts of courses on how to run energy, enhance intuition, even spiritual devel-opment. But few to none offer courses in business develop-ment. When the doors opened at Rukha® Academy of Healing Arts and Science, a Minnesota state-licensed school based in Minneapolis, one of the unique courses included in the standard program was a course on how to open and run a practice. This key course in a practitioner’s ed-ucation is pivotal to the gradu-

ate being able to earn a living in this field. At Rukha the graduates learn marketing and self-promotion skills throughout their two-year course of study. In year two, the Rukha program offers a course called, “Going into Business” which takes students through step-by-step instruction so that by the time of graduation, they have a marketing plan and oth-er essential business-basics like developing a niche, where to market, how to find clients al-ready created. They have been fostering relationships in their practice clientele that seamlessly turn into paying customers.

RUHKA OFFERS COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM

Without a comprehensive course of study, the graduate finds themselves feeling a lack of confidence, confusion, and often trepidation when faced with paying clients. They can easily develop a feeling of in-

security or even feeling like a fraud. This, then, leads to lack of motivation to develop the business. Rukha offers a full program of rigorous, professional and monitored instruction. The pro-gram is comprehensive in every way. The graduates have a strong sense of solidity about their work when it’s time to begin their ca-reer and provide their service to humanity. All the education in the world is for naught unless the education results in a thriv-ing practice that serves both practitioner and client. When choosing a program, be sure the tuition provides a compre-hensive curriculum. Rukha is a premier school of healing whose graduates earn money in their successful practice.
