Acupuncture for SeizuresSpirit is a Labrador retriever. She

is a good natured, attentive dog and loves to be around her family.

Spirit also has seizures. Her seizures are quite severe, in that she will fall to the ground and start motoring with all four feet, faster than “I’ll Have Another” in his last race. These seizures, while not frequent, were distressing to both Spirit and her owner. We knew that these seizures were not caused by an organ dysfunction or due to low blood sugar, as her blood work was always normal. We also knew that Spirit did not suffer from an infectious disease of any kind. That left us with only a couple of explanations for the seizures. Spirit either has a brain tumour or idiopathic epilepsy. An MRI would potentially show us if she had a tumour, but this diagnostic tool is not always financially an option for

clients. As the seizures were not occurring more frequently and not progressing in their severity , we are assuming Spirit has idiopathic epilepsy

Options for treatment of seizure disorders include Phenobarbital and Potassium Bromide. These two medications are the

most commonly used anticonvulsants in companion animals. Some patients are on one of these two drugs, and some more severe or poorly responsive patients need both. There are potential side effects to these medications which may include nausea, lethargy and liver damage. Veterinarians are careful to monitor their patients while on these medications to reduce the risk of side effects while achieving the best control possible. It was a concern for the potential side effects of medications, combined with the low frequency (once monthly) of Spirit’s seizures that prompted her owner’s interest in alternatives. And this is where acupuncture comes in.

The goal of acupuncture in the management of seizures is the same as that of traditional medicine - to reduce the frequency and severity of the seizures.

Experiments have shown that brain transmitters are affected by acupuncture, and this is believed to be the mechanism for acupuncture anti-epileptic action.

Acupuncture can be used safely alongside Phenobarbital and Potassium Bromide and is an option in seizure cases where control of seizures is less than desired, and maximum medication doses have been reached. Acupuncture can also reduce the need for drug dose increases – it can act in concert with medications allowing us to get control at lower doses. In pets that have liver challenges and cannot handle anticonvulsants, acupuncture may also be a good option. And, in Spirit’s case, acupuncture was used because her seizures were infrequent enough that her owner felt that medications were too risky when compared to the severity of Spirit’s epilepsy.

So, how did it all turn out? Spirit had a treatment shortly after she had her 3rd seizure of this year. One month later, we treated her a second time. She had had a small seizure in between treatments that consisted of just a head twitch. This was a big change, as all her other seizures were full body, leg paddling seizures, complete with foaming at the mouth. At her third visit Spirit was seizure free. Spirit continues to come in monthly for maintenance sessions. We are hoping to get a year in without seizures, but even if we can have them be of the head twitch type, rather than the full body, Spirit’s quality of life will definitely have improved. If you have any questions about acupuncture or other alternatives, contact the Arthur Veterinary Clinic at 519-848-2536 or email [email protected]

From Jack’s Desk…People always ask me why I chose

the name Jack’s Aluminum for our company, when most of our

window and siding installations involve vinyl products. That is simply because in 1976, when this company started, there was no such thing such as vinyl windows or vinyl siding. The main siding product was 8” horizontal aluminum siding, and the main window improvement products were aluminum storm windows. That just goes to show how the siding and window indus-try has evolved and changed over the past 35 plus years. The only thing that hasn’t changed much with us, is dependable cost effective products and our name.

We started selling vinyl siding in 1981 and vinyl replacement windows in 1992. From time to time we actually get a cus-tomer who has had aluminum siding and

even aluminum storm windows installed by us over 30 years ago. And it is very hum-bling when we are told “we were very happy with Jack’s Aluminum over 30 years ago and that is why we’d like to hire you to replace that old siding.” We treasure those type of repeat customers.

Two of my current staff, Ed Klapwyk and Bob Pauw, have been with me from the beginning and even my rookie installer

Jim Hogeveen, has close to thirty years under his toolbelt with us. You might say there isn’t much that we haven’t seen, when it comes to windows, siding, soffit, fascia and eavestrough.

Jack’s Aluminum Ltd. is proud to be the first choice of well over 20,000 custom-ers in Fergus, Elora, Guelph and area. If you need new windows, or if your house needs a face lift, my installers prepare their own quotes, and they would love to share their experience with you. Please visit our new website www.whereisjack.ca and con-nect to our blog which proudly lists our weekly jobsites. Or give us a call, 519-843-5000, 519-822-5000 or Email us at [email protected] We’d love to quote you!!

Thank youWelcome Wagon!

I received a visit from Helen Marucci and Elly Tuitman from the Centre Wellington Welcome Wagon and they

surprised me with a 10-year sponsorship plaque. The Grand River Booster has been a local Welcome Wagon sponsor since February 2nd, 2002.

If you’re not familiar with Welcome Wagon - it’s local programs include Baby Welcome, a package delivered to all new Centre Wellington mothers, and Community Welcome, a package delivered to all newcomers to Centre Wellington which contains civic information, maps and many gifts from local businesses to welcome people to their new community.

Welcome Wagon is an 82-year old all-Canadian company which has been active in Centre Wellington since 1969. If you know

of someone new in our community or a new mother who had her baby somewhere other than Groves Hospital, call Helen at 843-5570 or Elly at 843-1528.

Stefan J. Preisenhammer, a Centre Wellington father of four, has published a self-help book and website that helps provide your children with the mental tools they need to succeed in life. The Booster Magazine decided to investigate Stefan’s fascinating book, Toolbox For Life, in an interview with the author - see it on page 17.

A reminder that the Fergus Scottish Festival takes place August 10th-12th. This

year’s games features Celtic Music, crafts for the kids, heavy events championships, bagpipes, drums, author appearances, bands, Highland dancing, story telling, singing, clan information and heritage, beer tents, artisans and vendors galore!

Well, summer has arrived and the last few weeks have been a wonderful treat. As you pre-

pare for your summer vacation, whether it’s the backyard, a trip to the beach or travel-ling to far off lands, you’re likely calculat-ing your financial needs in order to accom-plish your goals.

This month I want to talk about Disabil-ity Insurance. This product is now available to everyone - regardless of your income, whether you work at home, in an office en-vironment, are self-employed or you’re in an industry that in the past has been “un-insurable”.

Disability Insurance is a product that supplies much-needed cash flow to you at a very critical time in your life - when you’re unable to work. That’s serious because the mortgage, heat, hydro and your family needs require cash. The products are gener-ally “rated” to your occupation so the more physical your job (ie roofer vs desk job) the more restrictions are imposed.

When you look into disability insurance, there are a few bits of information required to obtain the product. You will need to sup-ply your income (if you have one). Also, you must determine the number of months you can wait for a cheque (referred to as an Elimination Period) - the longer you can wait, the less amount per month you will have to pay.

Next is the Benefit Period. That is the length of time you’ll want to receive a cheque from the insurance company and your choices are 2 years, 5 years, 10 years

or to age 65 (new contracts can run longer due to people staying in the workforce lon-ger). The length of time you choose deter-mines the monthly cost - the longer the po-tential payment period the more per month you will have to pay.

The maximum amount of disability in-surance that you can obtain is 80% of your pre-disability income. So, for example, if you made $ 2,500 per month, then the max-imum disability insurance you could obtain is $2,000 per month. The cost also depends on whether you’re male or female, smoker or non-smoker and your age.

That is all you need to provide for us to find out how much your monthly costs will be.

We have the expertise to provide you with all this information and the knowledge and markets to get this working for you.

In closing, I often ask clients if they could afford $100/month now to invest in a prod-uct that will supply them with $2000 per month if they ever were disabled. Most of the time we are having too much month left over at the end of the money, but then something happens that takes us out of the workforce for 6 months or more (average length of disability). If you’re in the habit of receiving pay cheques of $2500 per month and for 6 months you receive $0.00, then you’re now $15,000 behind and the creditors are calling.

Let us help you ensure that this does not happen to you. Call Ecclestone Financial Group Inc., located at 245 St. David Street N., Fergus, at (519) 843-5110 or email [email protected] and visit www.efginc.ca

CoolWith today’s vehicles a great

many of us, can enjoy the same comfort levels that we

are accustomed to in our homes. With the push of a button and the twist of a knob we make the transition from heating to cooling and back again without ever wondering how this change occurs. This is all wonderful until something in the system goes wrong.

Since the introduction of vehicle air conditioning in the 1950’s, many things have undergone extensive change such as computer controlled temperature and dual temperature controlled systems, allowing you to set the desired temperature for both driver and passenger. While many improvements have added to the overall durability, they also have added complexity to today’s air conditioning systems, which drive up costs when maintenance is required, not to mention tough environmental regulations that govern even a simple task such as topping up a system with refrigerant without locating and repairing leaks allowing the refrigerant to escape into the atmosphere, which affects the ozone layer. A repair facility must be certified to purchase and handle refrigerant. When a system is worked on it must be documented and tagged, stating what was done and by whom.

Some things to watch for in your vehicles air conditioning system:

Your vehicle’s air conditioning condensor is located in front of the radiator. Air flowing across cooling fins removes heat from

the refrigerant as it circulates through the condensor. If the condensor’s fins become damaged or plugged with debris, air flow is restricted, and the refrigerant isn’t cooled. A restricted condensor can also cause the vehicle to overheat. The fins should be checked periodically to make sure they are clean and in good condition.

A wet carpet on hot, humid days can indicate a clogged air conditioner drain. When the drain is working correctly you’ll see a good amount of water dripping from under the vehicle after you park (this is normal).

A vibration or noise when the fan is on could indicate debris in the blower fan. Mice like to build nests in fans.

A reduced amount of air coming out of the vents, especially if it happens after driving for awhile, might mean the air conditioner’s evaporator is freezing up.

A musty or mildew odour when the fan

is first turned on, or all the time when the system is running, can indicate that mould or mildew is growing in the evaporator box or if so equipped the cabin air filter. One way to reduce the build up of mould and mildew is by turning the A/C recirculation switch off when you park vehicle. If your vehicle doesn’t have a recirculation switch, turn the A/C switch away from the “Max Air” position every time you shut off the engine. Some systems will still develop a musty odour over time, but there are evaporator cleaning procedures to eliminate the smell.

Another tip when you get into a hot parked vehicle, roll your windows down for the first few blocks. If you have a recirculation button, make sure it’s turned off. After the hot air is gone, turn recirculation mode back on.

We’re all concerned with fuel mileage and were always told that running the air conditioning wastes fuel, but today’s systems are more efficient than yesterday, and fuel savings would be minimal if you don’t run the air conditioning.

Many of us work in jobs that require prolonged periods of standing on concrete floors

with or without steel toed shoes. Our feet and ankles ache during and after work. The pain may be sharp, dull or manifest itself as plain soreness. The leg muscles fatigue, and start to lose their hold on the plantar arches of the feet.

The tibialis posterior muscle in particular is responsible for controlling the amount that the long arch collapses (pronation). If the tendon of this muscle ruptures or subluxes, the arch of the affected foot will be either completely or partially collapsed resulting in a flat foot.

You may have tried off the shelf supports and changing shoes with some success, yet the pain and discomfort remains.

Custom made orthoses made from a neutral position cast can assist in providing proper

foot alignment to reduce the stress within the leg muscles, foot ligaments and soft tissues. Orthoses usually consist of a shell made from plastic or rubber and have a certain degree of tilt built in specific to your lower limb condition. An extension is applied to the shell and features are added to off-load pressures that cause soreness in the forefoot.

Orthoses are manufactured at our on-site lab at 135 St. David St. S. at “The Olde Livery” in Fergus. Our service is recognized by major insurers and billing assistance is provided if required. A Certified Pedorthists is registered through the College of Pedorthics.

Results from a recent study released by the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) and the

University of Waterloo found that more than one third of Canadians over 40 years of age could actually have eye disease, despite having normal vision. The study also found that participants who waited longer between eye exams were more likely to have vision loss.

Some eye diseases have no symptoms in the early stages. If one waits to notice a problem with their vision before seeking an eye examination, the disease is often quite advanced. In many cases, vision loss is irreparable and sight cannot be restored. A regular eye examination is the only way

to catch many diseases early enough so treatment can be started to prevent further loss. A healthy adult should have their eyes examined every two years. Seniors are more likely to develop eye problems and should be examined yearly. Those 65 years of age and older are eligible for a full eye exam through OHIP for this reason.

Glaucoma is one eye condition that is typically only diagnosed by your eye doctor. This disease affects nearly one percent of Canadians and if left untreated can lead to complete vision loss. Although there are

different types of glaucoma, in all cases there is a degeneration of the nerve fibres that carry the visual information from the eye to the brain. Once nerve fibers are lost they cannot be regained. However, further loss of the nerves can be prevented with eye drops and/or occasionally through laser treatment or surgery.

Some people are more at risk for developing glaucoma. Glaucoma rates are higher among African, Asian and Hispanic ethnicities. Other risk factors include family history, age, diabetes, high eyeglass prescriptions and the use of steroid medication.

It is part of a routine exam to screen for glaucoma, glaucoma risk factors as well as other conditions which threaten vision. Book your exam at the Quarry Optometry Centre. Call 226-384-2020.

Shade Plus Open House Saturday, July 14th

You invite friends over for a barbecue. The hamburgers are on the grill, the drinks are on ice,

but after a short time outdoors, the sun’s blinding rays are just too strong! Does this sound familiar? Are you enjoying your backyard as much as you hoped this summer?

If there’s no shade in your backyard, then you’re probably not outside as often as you’d like. The friendly staff at Shade Plus can show you a host of shade solutions for your home.

They have retractable awnings with powder-coated aluminum frames in white or tan. These awnings are maintenance free and come with a 10 year warranty. And the best part? Shade Plus can custom make each one to suit your needs.

“These awnings are very strong,” says Brian Jans from Shade Plus who offers a lifetime warranty on every installation.

There are a variety of options available - choose from crank operated or motor that’s activated with a switch or remote. Remember to ask about adding wind and sun sensors, wind poles or a drop screen to your new awning.

Shade Plus uses Canadian-made Sunbrella fabric in a host of colour options. This fabric reflects the sun’s harmful uv rays and it comes with a 10 year warranty.

OThER OPTiONS- Shade Plus offers canopies in a

wide range of styles - a great choice for installation over windows, door ways as well as store/business fronts. Graphics can be added as well.

Getting Married Can Result in a Tax Bill

It’s that time of year where almost everyone I talk to is attending one wedding or another. Personally I

have not had any invites yet this year but who really wants a tax accountant at their wedding. I would think the same applies for the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

Unfortunately the CRA makes their presence known and has surprised many happily married new couples with nasty requests for money, usually many months after the happy day. The reason is that these new “couples”, not only didn’t invite the CRA, they failed to inform the CRA when they got married. Often young formerly “single” taxpayers are receiving HST and other credits that are based on individual net income - in other cases there are Child Tax Benefi ts being received also based on individual net income. Once married the credits will be based on “combined” net income which will often lead to a lower entitlement. If CRA is not informed of the marriage they will continue to pay credits

as though both people were single.

At some point, perhaps not until the next tax returns are fi led, the CRA fi nds out when the marriage happened and recalculates the credits and asks for the money to be returned and charges

interest! Unfortunately the requests are almost always correct since they are asking for money to be returned that was paid in error.

If you are getting married you have my congratulations, if you want to inform the CRA you can use the online My Account service or get your hands on form RC65, Marital Status Change and hopefully live happily ever after.

“Crystal is very attentive to my needsand she listens well”

Before he went to Definition Fitness, David Brown thought he wasn’t in bad shape: part

of his job involves doing a lot of heavy lifting, which feels to most like a built-in work-out. But at Definition Fitness, David quickly learned that he was only working the same muscles over and over, instead of getting the varied work-out that is essential to being in good shape.

David started working with Crystal Stewart, a personal trainer at Definition Fitness, and together they designed an exercise program that worked all of his muscles, and helped him with his endurance. “Crystal is very attentive to my needs and she listens well,” David says. He’s found that working with a personal trainer keeps him “accountable” to his exercise regimen.

Crystal and David meet four mornings a week at 6:30 a.m., before David starts his work day. “I feel like I’m sharper all day,” he said.

Create a work out catered to youNothing compares to the focused

attention and tailored exercise regimen

that you get from working one-on-one with a trained fitness professional. Personal trainers at Definition Fitness create a custom exercise program based on your needs, and provide motivation, guidance, and education.

If you’re a beginner who’s a little intimidated by weight equipment and unsure of the correct techniques, or you’re training hard but not getting the results you’re looking for, a personal trainer is for you. The regular sessions force you to

commit to your fitness program, and help you achieve your fitness goals.

Work with an experienced fitness professional in Definition Fitness’s state of the art facilities. Their 10,000-square foot location features a main gym floor, complete with a functional training area, as well as three group fitness rooms, washrooms with showers and day lockers, and a childcare room. They also have free-motion equipment, kettle bells, jump platforms and giant tires — things you’d see on The Biggest Loser, at a Crossfit gym, or on the Last 10 Pounds Bootcamp.

Homeopathic calcium for your baby

Many years ago, when I was still pig-farming, I went to a seminar where George

Macleod, a visiting veterinarian from Scotland, discussed the practice of homeopathy with livestock. I wasn’t ready to take the plunge with my 60-sow herd until I ran into a serious case that traditional medicine couldn’t help. A sow had given birth to 19 piglets (10 is normal). The sow was unable to stand. My vet said she needed intravenous calcium. It is commonly used in dairy herds, but isn’t cost effective for pigs. I called a local homeopath. He chose remedies based on the fact that she had no muscle control nor feeling in her lower limbs. The sow had been moved to a pen with 2 other younger sows. At feeding time the next morning, she was smack in front of the feeder and the other sows were cowering in the corner. But she was dragging her back end around behind her, often with her legs bent unnaturally. Every day when I came to her pen, the situation remained the same. But on the fi fth day she was standing at the feeder as if nothing had happened. For literally pennies’ worth of medicine she

was returned to health.

Not only does this case illustrate how amazing homeopathy can be, but it also d e m o n s t r a t e s the signifi cance of calcium in an embryo’s development -

to the point where it will actually steal calcium from its mother’s body. Tissue salts are an easy way to supplement your baby’s calcium levels. They are a dilute, highly absorbable form of the biochemical salts found naturally in the body. These tiny milk sugar tablets are easily dissolved in water and can be administered by teaspoon. They are carried in most health food stores.

Giving Calc-phos 6x and Mag-phos 6x daily for the fi rst 6 months of your baby’s development will allow him or her to sail through the developmental milestones.

But if the milestones are delayed you may need to consult with a professional homeopath. If teething is slow to begin - or very diffi cult for your baby - or if walking is later than expected, your baby may benefi t from a dose of Calcarea-carbonicum or Calcarea-phosphoricum.

And don’t forget the ABC’s of homeopathy for babies:

- Aconite for extreme fear; - Belladonna for extreme fever (use 6C); - Chamomilla for extreme pain (especially for teething).

For an appointment with me call 519-846-5574 or for information see www.marggollinger.com.

If you have a group that’s looking for a speaker, I’m happy to speak about homeopathy and healthy living - no charge!

Why do my Hearing Aids whistle?A whistling hearing aid can be ex-

tremely annoying and upsetting. However in almost all cases, the

whistling can be eliminated by consulting a hearing aid professional.

Brian Ward from Ward Hearing Centre in Fergus would like to explain the causes of a whistling hearing aid and how to con-trol it.

A wax blockage (plug) in the ear canal will cause sound from the hearing aid to bounce off the wax. The resulting “leak-age” of sound exits the ear canal and trav-els back into the microphone on the out-side of the ear. The whistling or squeaking sound that occurs isn’t just annoying to everyone else who can hear it, but it pre-vents the hearing aid wearer from hearing properly. The whistle ‘masks’ the sounds of speech that give words their necessary clarity.

Did you know that a minor weight loss (as little as 5 lbs.) can cause feedback/whistling issues for many hearing aid wearers?

“When we lose weight, the opening of our ear canal gets bigger,” says Brian. “And the hearing aid shell no longer pro-vides the necessary seal in the ear to keep whistling from happening.”

Sometimes the opposite of whistling can

occur whereby sound from the hearing aid becomes very weak or “dead”. This is usually caused by wax clogging the canal end where amplifi ed sound comes out, or debris entering the microphone on the out-side of the aid.

Some hearing aids have a built-in wax-guard system which functions to keep wax out of the instrument. Since the receptacle of the wax-guard will fi ll up with wax and prevent the wearer from hearing properly, it’s necessary to replace the wax-guard on a regular basis. How often is regular? This depends mostly on how much wax one produces. For those producing great-er amounts of earwax, wax-guard changes can be necessary every 4 or 5 days. How-ever, those with lower amounts of wax production can often go 2 or 3 weeks be-fore a wax-guard change is necessary. If

you’re not sure if your hearing aids have this type of wax-guard system, or it’s unclear how to change the guards, Brian will answer any questions you may have. Ward Hearing Centre also carries a wide selection of replacement wax-guards from many different manufacturers.

In addition to performing frequent hear-ing aid cleaning and wax guard replace-ments at home, regular in-offi ce cleanings are also necessary to ensure proper func-tioning of all types of hearing aids. Brian is more than happy to use his sophisticated equipment & tools to clean your hearing aids free of charge. (Walk-ins are welcome but appointments are preferred to serve you best.)

Whatever your assessment results, you can rest assured knowing that the caring, professional service at Ward Hearing Cen-tre will treat you very well with only your best interests in mind.

for more information, call (519) 843-4327. Ward hearing Centre is located in Unit #2, 135 St. David Street S. (inside the Olde livery Building) in downtown Fergus. free parking is available directly behind the Old Livery across from the Brew House.

“Paul has a great attitude and is always positive”

The Fergus-Elora Driving School has earned a solid reputation in Centre

Their instructors, Paul and Shawn, are not only the best trained and most experienced - which translates into superior results for their students - but many of their customers say they’re the most patient and caring as well. This is just what new drivers need to gain confi dence on the road. Paul and Shawn are passionate about

driver training and that’s evident in the success rate of their students - over 95 per cent of their students pass their road test on the fi rst try!

Local resident Gail Musselman recently sent her daughter Lori to The Fergus-Elora Driving School. Gail wanted Lori to learn defensive driving so that she would be safe behind the wheel. “I have known Paul for many years and

that is one of the reasons I sent Lori to

his school,” says Gail. “He has a great attitude on life, always positive about things and he is so friendly and easy to talk too. I knew Lori would be able to learn from Paul!”Lori says she learned a lot of information

about driving before she even had the chance to drive on the road. What was the best part of the course for Lori? “The best part of the course was that

all my friends were in the same class

with me,” she says. “I enjoyed my in car lessons with Paul, he was friendly and he always made me feel comfortable driving with him.”Want to be The Fergus Elora

Not All Water Conditioners Are Created Equal

In an Aquamaster, water enters the tank by passing through the filter media, which begins the treatment

for hard water. This hard water, which contains calcium and magnesium ions, next passes through a bed of resin. The resin attracts these hard ions and re-places them with soft ions. The result is soft water. The Aquamaster directional

flow screen distribution system directs water flow evenly through the resin bed. This enables the resin to be used with maximum efficiency. The resin that has been used and depleted of exchange-able ions is now exhausted resin. In a conventional water conditioner system, water takes the path of least resistance through the tank, leaving much of the

resin bed unused. One of the great ben-efits of the Aquamaster is that it makes use of a reserve resin bed which allows it to regenerate (or clean itself) with clean soft water.

Aquarius Water Treatment also has a line of filtration products to clean up any water condition you may have. In addi-tion to our filtration products we also sell the Cera shower head which uses ceramic balls to help moisturize dry skin, reduce bacteria and prevent chlo-rine from contacting your skin. Doing a kitchen renovation, bathroom renova-tion or just need service work done? Si-mon is a licensed plumber with over 25 years of experience.

Core Fitness and Your Spinal HealthCore training is a no-longer-

new catchphrase in the fi tness industry. The concept of core

fi tness, by now, has been promoted by every Pilates school and chain of fi tness clubs around the world. For many decades football coaches, ballet instructors, and gymnastics coaches trained their athletes in vigorous and strenuous techniques that all focused on core strength. High school gym teachers knew about the core. Remember squats thrusts, jumping jacks, and push-ups? All those ancient exercises (that we used to groan and moan about) train deep core muscles. We were doing core fi tness before there was “core fi tness”.

What exactly is the core and what are you training when you train it? Your core muscles refer to the muscles of your stomach and back. The importance of the core muscles is their ability to provide a “center” or focus for the physical work your body is doing.

Having a strong core is vitally important and if for one reason or another your core is not fi t, the chances are other muscles will have to take over, leading to a greater likelihood of strains, sprains and other injuries.

Why do we need core fi tness and a strong core today? More and more our work involves sitting down. We stare at computer screens for eight hours a day. Instead of doing physical work such as farming or building, we type on a keyboard and talk on a cell phone. The long-term result is that muscles, tendons, and ligaments lose their integrity. Tight neck muscles, tight lower back muscles, and weak abdominal muscles are the result, and these issues lead to more serious problems such as chronic headaches, cardiovascular stress, impaired digestion and lower back problems.

How does chiropractic fi t in with the

idea of core strength and fi tness? The answer is quite simple and relates to a part of our body that we take for granted daily – our spine.

Chiropractic care helps make almost everything better from a physical point of view. When you exercise, it’s important for your muscles and joints of the spine to be freely moveable. If you’re exercising and

you have joints with restricted mobility, particularly in the spine, it’s easy to get injured. This is the same as pressing down on the accelerator with one foot while applying the brake with the other. That would be a pretty bumpy ride. Chiropractic care of the spine helps open up your spinal highways and byways, smoothing out your biomechanical journey and helping you get the most out of your core and other exercises. When you’re exercising your core it’s important for all the parts involved to have their maximum range of motion. Chiropractic and the care of your spine can help you get there.

What Is A Planned Donation?

A planned donation is a donation where an individual makes a commitment regarding a bequest that will be made

later. It enables the donor to make a significant donation through a modest contribution.

What is a very economical way to make a planned donation? Life insurance. Using life insurance to make a planned donation is a unique and affordable way to make a donation to an organization whose cause you hold dear to your heart.

What are some of the benefits of a planned donation when you contribute your life insurance proceeds? It enables you to make a significant donation through small premium payments; it optimizes your tax credits with both the federal and provincial governments. The donation in no way affects your already acquired estate (family property) and which you wish to hand down to your loved ones.

It also provides you with the possibility to choose various options suited to your financial situation.

What are some of the benefits of a planned donation to an organization? It provides long-term financing; it ensures that large amounts are paid tax-free at death. It also allows the rapid payment of donated amounts when the organization is designated as the beneficiary of the insurance contract. It also ensures that the donation cannot be contested and is easy to administer.

There are many ways to structure donations through the use of a life insurance policy. For sound advice and good planning, contact us at Wright & Associates at 519-265-5126 or email us at [email protected]. We can help you find the most appropriate solution for your wishes and personal situation.

Do you know of any charity or organization which would benefit from a planned donation program? Please pass along this article to them, or let us know and we will contact them.

Stefan J. Preisenhammer, a Centre Wellington father of four, has published a self-help book and

website that helps provide your children with the mental tools they need to succeed in life. The Booster Magazine decided to investigate Stefan’s fascinating book, Toolbox For Life, in an interview with the author.

Booster Magazine: Stefan, you have created www.toolboxforlife.com and wrote a book. What is it all about?

Stefan Preisenhammer: Everybody who raises children knows how quickly time goes by. At some point we ask ourselves, what do I want my kids to know before they leave home? So I came up with this list of ten tools, not one of which is being taught in school, by the way - unfortunately.

Booster: So, what is so special about these Tools of yours, then?

Stefan: They are all mental tools. We all have them but often times are not aware of their existence, nor of what they can do for us. Let me give you an example. Everybody is familiar with the ABC, right? Try to say it backwards. You see how difficult that is? Now what would you say if there was a simple technique allowing our children to recall a list of 20 items, given to them in random order and they could recall them forward, backwards and itemized? Without taking notes and with their eyes blindfolded. Do you think that would help them with their school work? Would that ability boost their self-confidence?

Booster: The average child can learn this technique? That is hard to imagine.

Stefan: Watch for yourself. There is a video on www.toolboxforlife.com where a 9-year old is doing exactly that. He is my son Sammy, but I dare to say that every one of his class mates could do the same thing. It takes about 2 hours to teach this technique.

Booster: We should put you to the test on that. What else can one learn in the Toolbox

For Life?Stefan: This memory trick is

supposed to show what our brain can do for us. All we have to become aware of, is how our brain operates and processes information. Let me give you another example. When we have a problem, we usually think about a solution, right? That is probably the most inefficient way of solving a problem. Because if we had the solution in our brain, we wouldn’t have the problem in the first place, would we?

Now look at how successful inventors think. Thomas Edison for example held over a thousand US patents. How did he come up with that many new ideas and solutions? Here is what he did. Instead of thinking about a solution he used a technique allowing new ideas to enter his mind by trying to simplify the problem as much as he could and then to just let it go. And then – at a key moment of his day - he would create and feel the feeling which we get when having a brilliant idea. Where we say: “My God, why didn’t I think of that earlier?!”

Booster: What is that ‘key moment’? Can everybody have that?

Stefan: We all have it. Once a day and it lasts about 3-5 minutes. Unfortunately we usually use this key moment to think about our problems. So, in order to invite better ideas into

our mind we don’t need to be an inventor – we just have think like one.

Booster: Is there a technique to create a positive change in our life – without much effort?

Stefan: Yes, there is. I guess you are referring to the New Year’s resolutions, we all make but often don’t stick to? Let’s take personal fitness for example. Can you do 50 push-ups right here, right now? Probably not. But could you do one? Probably yes. The key to changing our life is not by making a drastic change (which becomes uncomfortable after a while) but by

creating a new habit. If you make one push-up – not more, only one – and you’d tie it to something you do anyway, like brushing your teeth in the morning for example, you’d create a new habit. It is tied to something you already do anyway, it doesn’t require any time and best of all, it doesn’t require any effort because it doesn’t hurt. A week later you’d increase your ‘dose’ to two push-ups. For the full week, only two push-ups per day. Instead of pushing yourself, all you have to do is to hold back! That’s the key – to hold your ego back. After two weeks you have created your habit and in one year’s time you could do 52 push-ups, no sweat.

Booster: Creating a new habit instead of pushing for a drastic change in life. Great idea! Now where can people get the ‘Toolbox For Life’?

Stefan: Locally it is available at Roxanne’s Reflections Book Store on St. Andrew St. West here in Fergus and at Natalie’s Fountain Head Health Food Store, also on St. Andrew.

Or for out-of-towners online atwww.toolboxforlife.com.

Just follow the ‘learn more’ buttons or go to the ‘contact us’ section.
