A Shepherd’s Tale June 2011After the quiet of April May has been a frantic month.Exasperated by the lack of rain, I decided to cut my hay in thethird week of May. Potentially yields would be down but in theo-ry the grass would be easier to dry and the quality of the haywould be better. Things went well for the first few days but raincame just as the hay was nearly fit and the process wasknocked back a few days. We eventually made 264 bales.Although the hay was a bit wetter than I would like we did theright thing as they day after baling we had a modest "soaking".

The bales are prettyheavy so an old balesqueeze which liftedthe bales on to thetrailer was resurrected to make handling easier. Hopefully we have justenough hay now for the winter. At the same time as making hay we sheared the sheep; with so manymore to shear the shepherds set up two shearing stations and brought anovice assistant. Anyway we cracked on. The novice, when he had a go,was much slower and left a rougher finish but it’s important to encouragebeginners to learn such a basic skill. We now have the proverbial threebags of wool and the good news is that wool prices are starting to recov-er after a prolonged slump; still not enough to cover the cost of shearing, but a lot better than last year. Our final hoped for excitement was Open Farm Sunday when manyBritish farms open their doors to the public. I had been discussing the

idea with neighbouring farms and felt that it would be good to open my small flock up as a low key pilot. Dealingwith health and safety issues was a nightmare, but it did mean we had a good reason for a tidy up. Well needlessto say, it was the same day as the church fête and the cold wet weather put everyone off which was a big disap-pointment, but at least we have a tidy farm and a new outdoor sink.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCHJune 2011There will be a full report of the annu-al meeting, held on Tuesday June21st, in the next issue of the GrafhamGossip. There were no incidents reported inGrafham in June.Boiler Room Scams Boiler Rooms are businesses that use high pressuresales techniques to sell "sure thing" investments withthe promise of massive returns. In fact, what they're sell-ing is worthless stock, in often unquoted companies thatare either overvalued or simply don't exist at all.Boiler Room operatives generally cold call their targets, using phone numbers from publicly available sharehold-er lists. Because it is against the law to cold call in theUK, they tend to be based abroad (often Spain,Switzerland or the US) where they're beyond the juris-diction of the Financial Services Authority (FSA). Theycan approach anyone, anywhere. The caller will sound legitimate and may mention com-panies you've heard of, give themselves a UK addressor phone number and have a professional looking web-site.If you are called contact the FSA contact centre on 0845606 1234 or more information can be found on the FSAwebsite: www.fsa.gov.ukCambridgeshire Police Authority has details of a freeproperty registration scheme and the facility to list allvaluables - of particular interest for our location is theregistration of bicycles.Details on www.cambs.police.ukor www.immobilise.com

A Long Lost CottageA cottage in a beautiful rural setting once stood on topof Grafham Hill in Ellington Thorpe, just before theentrance to Redwood Lodge Farm. This homely littlecottage fell into disrepair and in the mid 1960s it wasdemolished by Mr Nicholls who owned the farm at thetime. Mr and Mrs Thompson Wales were the lastoccupiers of the cottage when they owned the farm,as Redwood farm house was damaged be fire in themid 1930s. Sam Malt

PARISH NEWS...June 2011Your recently elected Parish Council has startedto discuss business. First on the agenda was theallocation of areas of responsibility. There are fifteendifferent areas for councillors to take on and the resultof the discussion was as follows:Philip Allingham will deal with village hall and PCC liai-son.Ian Gardener takes on policies and regulations, plan-ning matters and neighbourhood watch liaison.Tracie Lord has responsibility for issues concerningyoung people and older people in the village.Alastair Watson will liaise with the emergency servicesand the allotment society.David King continues his work with the environment, footpaths and highways.Andrew Duckworth takes on Signage and health andsafety.Kevin Sharp will liaise with Luminus Homes andCambridgeshire ACRE.It was good to see Peter Downes at the latest meeting. His responsibilities in the new Council mean that he islikely to be able to attend our monthly meetings morefrequently. A summary of the results of the Parish Plan has been

sent to the Parish Council. There are severalissues about which everyone feels quite strongly. These are the issues that the Parish Council willneed to try to address over the forthcoming termof office. It will not surprise you to know that

these include traffic speeds through the village, the pro-vision of a shop and a pub, various unpleasant smellsin the air and the provisions of allotments. The long-awaited village sign will soon be erected atthe junction of Breach, Buckden and Church Roads. Inorder to erect it to best advantage, it will be necessaryto remove a tree on the site. However, the Council issensitive to the issues surrounding the removal of treesand intends to plant at least three new trees in differentareas around the village. The Council were very pleased with the success of theRoyal Wedding Party, thanks to those who wereinvolved in its organisation. In 2012, the country willcelebrate 60 years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth, perhaps another party is on the agenda. Please remember that there is time given to the publicprior to the beginning of every Parish Council meeting. If you have any concerns or questions, please comeand talk to your council. The next meeting of the council is on 12th July 2011.

Letter to the Editors...PPlleeaassee uussee lleeggaall ffoooottppaatthhssAt Redwood Lodge Farm we have been improving wildlife conservation for over ten years. Our projects haveincluded planting thousands of trees, shrubs and miles of new hedges. This has included an avenue of treesfrom the corner of the playing field to join up with the old railway line, in the large field at the rear of The Wyvernand the Brampton Road. Unfortunately. some people are regularly walking various routes in and around this fieldincluding through to the old railway line. This is causing damage to plants, mainly from dogs, and great distur-bance to the wildlife. We are trying to improve the visual outlook for Grafham people and their chance of seeing wildlife around the vil-lage. These routes are not public rights of way and we politely ask that the law is respected and only legal foot-paths are used. The only legal footpath in this field is the bridleway that commences almost half a mile out of thevillage on the Ellington road and runs down to Brampton Wood.We do not want to have to plough this land in order to stop this happening and would appreciate your assistancein this matter.

Buckden Surgery Patients Association(BSPA) I am the Buckden Surgery representative on theHuntingdon Patient Congress (HPC) and as such I havein the past requested feedback from patients on a varietyof issues - alas with little or no result. Patient views andopinions are increasingly being sought and will have aninfluence on how future clinical services are deliveredlocally. The HPC, both Doctors Consortia andHinchingbrooke Hospital are anxious for ideas and con-structive suggestions on how best to develop primarycare policy with patients needs at the centre. Healthcareprofessionals remain determined to deliver clinically safe, high quality care in these financially very straitenedtimes. Would anyone interested in providing their viewsplease contact me in the first instance. Of especial valuewould be the ideas of those with chronic medical condi-tions and those with experience of elderly care services. Our consortium of GPs, Hunts Care Partnership, is thelargest in the Huntingdon area with many more surgeriesoutside looking to join. Mutual goals are also being dis-cussed with Hunts Health as logicdictates they will eventually amal-gamate and speak with one power-ful voice to deliver economy ofscale in commissioning and astreamlined service. As I write, damaging delays to the signing of the contractto manage Hinchingbrooke Hospital are proving hugelyfrustrating for Circle and hospital staff. Speculationabounds but it would appear this delay originates withinthe coalition at Westminster. It is vital that momentumshould not be lost and this is definitely not in the interestsof hospital staff morale or of the people in the Huntingdonarea.

Looking back to last year's July issue it was notedthat "Summer had at last arrived." This year weappear to have had summer early but unfortu-nately it lapsed somewhat on the day of our fête! You will read a full report within these pages and

we echo thanks to all who braved theweather on that wet and windy day. Asomewhat bedraggled and chilled congre-gation were nevertheless in good voicefor the service afterwards in the churchand not outdoors as planned. The themeof the readings and hymns was of

Pentecost when we were reminded of those disciplesreceiving the Holy Spirit and speaking in many tongues. The PCC is currently seeking advice on how to achievegrant funding for the restoration project. We will keepyou informed of progress. The pattern of our services is still under review but ourFamily Service on the first Sunday of each month is afixture and we look forward to especially welcoming all

ages on those days. There will be a special guestat our family service on 3rd July when we willlearn about the presentation of Maundy moneythis Easter. We will also welcome back an oldfriend to take the service (old infriendship, not in years!)As we enter the holiday season

we wish everyone safe journeys andhappy days. Please bear in mind ourFlower Festival on the weekend of 10thand 11th September when the theme willbe Hats. Several entries have already been booked soplease get in touch with Jill 810157 or Hazel 810326 withyour ideas.Thereafter, on 24th September a five parish Autumn Fairin the village hall will replace the usual Advent Fair. SueYoung will be looking for help on that day so do contacther if you are able to contribute.Lastly, I am delighted to say we do have a new memberon the church cleaning rota. Grafham Tang Soo Do ClubIt has been a successful year for members of Grafham Tang Soo Do Club. In the last twelve months we havewon trophies at both regional and national level and had several promotions through the belts system.Topping the trophies list is Simone Tauber, better known to most of us as "Riley". At the recent UK NationalChampionship she not only won all the three categories that she entered (Forms, Weapons and Sparring), shewas also picked out as the UK Grand Champion. This is an outstanding achievement and all done just one and ahalf years after she started Tang Soo Do.Amongst the promotions in the belt system are William King, Ryan Atkins and Martin Graves, all of whom havereached the rank of Cho Dan Bo. This is where they have passed through the ten levels of coloured belt and arenow being considered as black belt candidates.Father and son, Martin and Tim Doughty, were already at Cho Dan Bo level a year ago and they both successful-ly completed the eight hours of pre-testing and full testing to reach Black Belt level. This raises the number of"home grown" Black Belts in the club to five, with the likelihood of more to come.Tang Soo Do is a traditional Korean martial art and is suitable for all ages, in fact our members range in age from7 to 50+. If you would like to find out more then why not come to one of our classes in the village hall. We meetevery Wednesday and Friday evenings from 7:00 until 8:30.

July 2011 9 Issue 83

Welcome to your Grafham Oil Syndicate. More and more communities are joining forces to get a lower oil price though bulk buying

. There are 9 regional suppliers who are willing to offer quotes to our syndicate

. Deliveries are planned for August, October, December, January, March (not set in stone)

. Look out for email reminders and the Grafham Gossip for delivery dates

. Email [email protected] or call with your order if required

. I will aggregate the order and negotiate on behalf of the syndicate

. Then email the outcome with the best price along with comparisons

. Minimum delivery is 500 litres, maximum, fill up

. Each household pays the same rate regardless of order size

. The successful company will contact each household to arrange delivery and payment

It is important to note that I will not be liable for payment and am simply managing the processthat results in a bulk order. You will therefore need to settle directly with the successful compa-ny for that particular delivery according to their guidelines.
