Please book your meal with the office by Friday 26 June and advise your preferences. Cost of the meal is $10.00pp. From the President – Michael Keenan As car persons we should all know the value of logic and the most valuable principle of a logical answer to a problem – Occam’s razor – the simplest solution is the best and most likely to be the actual solution. The other rule is the camel principle - that is a complex solution and is most likely to be designed by a committee – why? Because it tries to incorporate all the parts. (Opinions/ views etc) Given it is election time, a quick review of the nomination and election process and the application of the Occam’s razor is perhaps pertinent. The Club’s constitution actually calls for four sets of elections. One for President, one for Vice President, one for Secretary and one for Board Members. Complicating the matter is nomination for one position excludes you from another. An added but not impinging complication is that some people don’t have to be elected this time. The governance committee of the Board has considered this arrangement. Apart from it not being a simple solution to the problem of how you get a good collection of people who represent the clubs internal opinion to manage the Club for everyone’s benefit – it also wastes talent. If, for example, three people stand for President, two of them will not be able to participate in the Board for a year. Given the Club, and it is not alone in this, is not under siege with candidates, this is a gross waste of talent. The same happens with Vice President and with Secretary. There is a catch all that says the Board can appoint people thereafter and there is a potential for the person who nominates to get involved in the Board committees and there is also a potential for a person to be involved into the sections in lieu of their loss. However that must be weighed against the candidates realization that they might have escaped (rather than lost) the position and so they are less willing to put their name up in the immediate future. The Club needs to think seriously about having a single all in all out election process with the Board appointing its officers from within –as does parliament, most clubs and organizations. Apart from simplicity, it has the advantage of having candidates stand for the job of managing the Club rather than the position. For those who want to have recognized and direct vote for the Club’s mantelpiece, the other option is to have a two elections - for President and for the Board, if so, then to ensure the capture of talent, the process should allow a candidate to nominate for a President and for a board position - if they lose as President, then in the simultaneous separate ballot process they can then be voted onto the Board – if they lose both, there has to be a message in the result. In the meantime, we have an election under a set of rules and I urge candidates to come forward; I will not be so ingenuous as to say there is no time commitment because there is but if you have the time and the commitment, it will seem like no time at all. Membership Thank you to all the members who have already renewed their membership for the upcoming financial year. Please note that the office will be open on Wednesday evening, 1 st of July, from 6.30pm to 8.00pm prior to the General Meeting to renew memberships or get log books updated. July 2009

Library News DID YOU MISS OUR BIG BOOK, MAGAZINE AND BROCHURE SALE? NOW YOU CAN PURCHASE OUR SURPLUS STOCK YEAR ROUND BY COMING INTO THE LIBRARY ON WEDNESDAY OR FRIDAY MORNINGS. One popular book that we have recently re-read is “BIG REV KEV” by double Australian Drivers Champion, and serious Tasman Series competitor, Kevin Bartlett, who was able to challenge the visiting Internationals at circuits in both Australia and New Zealand. In fact he is the only still active driver to have competed in every Tasman Championship, and he claims to hold the record for driving the widest assortment of cars in circuit races of any current driver. His love of Bathurst, where for years he held the record for the fastest lap ever recorded, shines through page after page. So the book is an entertaining read and recounts how he started from a small beginning as so many champions did, and became successful not only from his driving ability but also from his engineering and car sorting ability. In a local and topical comment, he has some good words to say about those superb organisers and valued Club members, Neville Pym and Clem Smith. As a result of our plea for a couple of publications in last month’s Newsletter, we are very grateful that John Lindsay supplied us with the copy of ‘Road and Track’ and Peter Bradey supplied us with ‘Spark Plugs.’ These valued gifts complete a couple of our collections. URGENTLY REQUIRED: SCC Motoring History Books (Brooks Books) Nos 4, 7, 8 and 10. When you are next in the Club, have a look at the information on THE LIBRARY NOTICE BOARD (the board nearest the function room) for information about books magazines and other topical subjects. Gavin Farmer is currently researching for two more books with help from the Library. One is on the Monaro and the other on the Buckle. If anyone has photos or information that they think should be included in these publications talk to us in the Library. Meet Us In The Library. HRR News HRR AGM is set for Tuesday July 14th, Ann Ozgo and Rodney Gibb will be stepping down from their positions as Chairperson and Minute taker respectively. Ann and Rodney have done an admiral job in their contribution and commitment to the HRR section of the club, but will still continue on as committee members. So now is the time to put your hand up and make sure your nomination is in for these positions. “Ask not what the HRR can do for you, but what you can do for the HRR”! A strong contingent of crow eaters made the trek to All Historic Winton recently. The Dodge contingent was out in force and got some respectable results in a strong field. Mark Woodberry was fast but a dodgy (sic) seal let him down, Kevin Shearer had the Cooper Jap flying, Brocky was in the Streamliner, Trevor Dunfords Vauxhall found extra revs’ due to a diff ratio change. Lobethal Update, Lobethal is looking bigger and better this year with two action packed days planned for 3-4 October 2009. This years on 13, 14, 15 June saw a sunny Saturday, a wet Sunday and a sunny Monday. Not bad considering the forecast. All who attended enjoyed the hospitality of Annie’s Lane Winery, for Saturday lunch & wine tasting. Sunday was a drive to Moonta to ride the Mines Train and visit the Mines Museum then to Moonta Bay for lunch. Back to our accommodation at the Clare Country Club in much rain. Sunday was a drive to Tanunda to look at the David Braunach Museum organized by Jeff Gransden and then on to Seppeltsfield Winery for lunch where the Sunseeker Trophy and the Bill Potts trophy were awarded. Thanks were made and the Sunseeker ended for another year. The Committee trust that everyone enjoyed this year’s event and look forward to the next. Coming meetings Friday 3 July is the Classic Annual General Meeting. The outgoing Chairman is no longer looking for a replacement and the majority of the Committee are carrying on. IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS At this late stage we are continuing to seek NOMINATIONS for the 5 Board positions that become vacant in September this year. In the interests of the ongoing and effective management of our Club we have extended the closing date another 2 weeks to 10th July 2009 with the view of attracting additional nominations. Ideally we would like to receive more nominations than vacancies so that members have the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidate(s). This is your opportunity to either seek a nomination or to nominate a colleague to take an important role in the management of your Club. Nominations are required for President, Vice President, Secretary and 2 x Board Members.

CONGRATULATIONS TO GEORGE BROOKS OAM Awarded the Order of Australia Medal in the Queens Birthday Honours for 2009 George’s professional life is well documented. As a Resident Engineer of the State owned Engineering and Water Supply, he had the responsibility for supervising the erection of the vital water supply pipelines, from the River Murray to metropolitan and rural areas. Few would have continued to accept the primitive working conditions of those country construction camps, for such an extended period. His supervision ensured that the pipelines were constructed to a standard that has allowed these vital pipelines to continue to serve South Australians ever since, in the trouble free manner that they do. However George’s other legacy, is the result of his outstanding commitment to the recording of early motoring history, and in particular that of South Australia. These records are a unique and an absolutely invaluable source of information, both currently and certainly for research in the future. The obsession commenced while George was attending King’s College, and was aided with a Brownie Box camera. For over 50 years George has spent thousands of research hours, to diligently and accurately recreate from scratch, all motoring records, and in particular the records of South Australian motor registration up to 1931, because the originals were senselessly destroyed. Over a number of years, he has collected or borrowed from private collections, sufficient photographs to publish through the Sporting Car Club, fourteen booklets. These and his book, S.A. Motor Cars 1881 to 1942, co-authoured by Ivan Hoffman, represent the most important and comprehensive record of South Australian motoring history ever assembled. The booklets have been the inspiration for the production of similar books in the other States. From the beginning George has actively participated in veteran vehicle rallies in his ever immaculate 1910 Daimler, or in vintage events in his Straker Squire. During the war years, while stationed in Sydney George was instrumental in founding the Vintage Sports Car Club of Australia, and is the only surviving founding member. He held office within the Veteran Section of our Club for many years. His major contribution was to be responsible for the accurate dating of veteran motor vehicles, which he continued to do, until recent ill health prevented him from continuing. His maintenance of uncompromising standards of authenticity and legally correct dating, although frustrating for some owners, was maintained so effectively, that his standards have been recognized around the world. Finally and most importantly, to acquire the comprehensive private reference library such as that collected by George, now housed at the National Motor Museum, is an amazing thing in itself, however its true value only comes from access to it, and the dissemination of the information that it contains. In that respect George was totally unstinting in his efforts. He would go to inordinate lengths to provide anyone who requested information, with every detail he could find, and he did so, most promptly. Because of his invaluable, accurate and authoritative source of information, George’s reputation as a provider of flawless details of cars and motoring history, spread throughout the world, to encompass individuals, clubs, authors, international museums, and of course the History Trust of S.A. The amount of his personal time taken in such activity and correspondence has been incredible. It is therefore of no surprise, that from its very beginning, George has been actively involved with The National Motor Museum at Birdwood in S.A., first as a member of it’s founding Committee, then as a Board member for many years.

CALENDAR of EVENTS Continued… He has always been a most important adviser and ardent supporter of the Museum, with his cars now being on permanent display in the Museum, and his records of S.A. motoring history, a major part of its reference library. Thus all who know George Brooks, have nothing but the greatest respect for him as a person of the highest integrity, in every possible way. His contribution to the Sporting Car Club of S.A., its members, and the wider community of veteran motoring enthusiast around the world, must never be under estimated. It is therefore a privilege for all of us as fellow Club Members, to be able to formally recognize these achievements and to sincerely congratulate George on being very justly awarded the Order of Australia Medal for his lifetime contribution. An award given in due recognition of that which he has accomplished, and one which has been long overdue.
