JULY 18, 2021 | 16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

©LPi

READ & REFLECT

June 28

There’s an ordinary little pine grove located on a tree farm not too far outside of town where life’s stresses and demands seem to melt away. Here, all that seemed so important thirty minutes earlier no longer is, and one can get lost in rows of trees and majestic beauty. God is here and all is well.

We need to connect with the divine source of our existence in order to understand what it is we are doing in our day-to-day lives and why we are doing it. Otherwise, things stop making sense and bitterness can overcome one’s spirit. It’s okay to give ourselves permis-sion to play once in a while and to discover that place of profound life and peace. There will always be pressing needs and unending obligations. Most of those commitments are absolutely necessary. But so, too, is the inner solitude and contentment of reflection.

We all need a pine grove. It’s that little place we can go and leave that all-consuming pressure behind. Technology can be set aside and wonder and awe are given our focus. We don’t have to text, calculate, or orchestrate anything in the pine grove. It is a somewhat

deserted place where we can just be. The anger, frustration, exhaustion, discourage-ment, and apathy fall away like those pine needles blanketing the ground that once held their place on the branches of the fir. The needles can let go. We can let go. We are beings connected with the Supreme Being. We all need to remember what really matters, who really matters, and what life is truly all about. We need to find that place where we can rest, breathe, seek, love, and be loved.

The world will need us again when we leave the pine grove. It will all be waiting for us, beckoning for our attention. But we will have prayed, will have marveled at the silence, and appreciated the beauty. We can return, ready and eager to listen, to help, to embrace, and attend to all that is asked of us. Having let go of the distractions in that deserted place just for a little while, we will have a refreshed and renewed sense of purpose. We will know better Who it is we serve and what we are meant to do. This week, make a special effort at some point to connect with the divine so you are better able to experience sincere gratitude and give of yourself. ©LPi

He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” - Mark 6:31

MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT 7

JULY 18, 2021 | 16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was established in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam in Paris, France during a period of Church persecution. There was a great need to help the poor and destitute with their needs and to increase their faith by bringing them closer to God.

The Society is an international organization. Over 65,000 US Vincentians support the Conferences established in individual parishes, which are supported by the churches and their parishioners.

At St. Francis, our 16 members orchestrate financial and spiritual assistance to individuals and families in need. Last year, our parish helped 248 people with food, utilities, and rent or mortgage payments, protecting families from hunger, heat and cold, and homelessness.

Many clients fall just a little behind in payments because of illness, injury, or job loss. Negative situations arising from the pandemic still have rippling effects on our neighbors.

Members also volunteer at our food mission, The Ozanam Center at 1306 Monroe Ave. We provide meals for over 100 visitors 365 days of the year. The Center provides the homeless and others in need a safe and welcoming place out of the summer heat and winter cold to get a good meal and socialize with volunteers and other guests.

The Society also sponsors the "Friends of the Poor Walk/Run” at Christian Brothers High School each year. This year, the walk/run will be held on Saturday, September 25. Proceeds benefit The Ozanam Center Food Mission.

Our conference at St. Francis of Assisi meets on the third Monday of each month. If you would like to be a part of this ministry, we would love for you to join us! Please call (901)756-1213 or email your contact information to [email protected].

PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION 9

JULY 18, 2021 | 16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

It's Time to Register for 2021/22 PRE Classes! We will offer our full schedule of classes in person this year, from 4K to high schoolers who need to prepare for sacraments! Visit stfrancismemphis.org and click on Faith Formation. PRE classes for 4K through 12th grades begin on Sunday, Sept. 12th, from 10:15 - 11:45am at St. Francis School. Bringing up your child in the Catholic Faith: Things every parent should know!

· All Catholic children in 1st through 8th grades should be receiving Religious Education every year, either in a Catholic School or in our PRE program. Additionally, children who are homeschooled must be registered through the PRE program in order to receive their sacraments at the traditional time.

· Preparation for sacraments is a 2-year process. In order to receive First Communion and Recon-ciliation in 2nd grade, the child must be enrolled in Catholic School or PRE in 1st grade. In order to receive Confirmation in 8th grade, the child must be enrolled in Catholic School or PRE in 7th grade.

· If your child missed receiving their Sacrament(s) at the traditional time, we can help! We offer classes for older students (including for those in high school) that will prepare them for First Communion, Reconciliation, and Confirmation.
