to exercise safely.

We offer these recommendations to help seniors get

started:

• Include four types of exercise — endurance, strength,

•Gradually increase your aerobic workouts, and add va-

•Practice flexibility exercises, stretching slowly, gently

and within your comfort level.

•Practice strength training exercises, but under the

guidance of your doctor, physical therapist or fitness

professional.

•Practice relaxation techniques to reduce stress and

lower blood pressure.

• Wear the right clothes and Never force yourself.

•Drink plenty of water each day.

•Snack often throughout the day, and stick to light din-

(AFP) - Apple is expected tounveil a new iPhone later thisyear with a slimmer screenthanks to updated touch-screentechnology.

The next generation iPhone, referred to by fans as the"iPhone 5", is being manufac-tured by Asian componentmakers, Dow JonesNewswires quoted unnamedsources as saying.

Its panels will use "in-celltechnology" integrating touchsensors into the LCD, it said.

That makes a separatetouch-screen layer unneces-sary and reduces the screenthickness by about half a mil-limetre, Dow Jones quotedDisplaySearch analyst HiroshiHayase as saying.

The new technology willalso boost displayed imagequality, and help Apple cutcosts as it would no longerhave to buy touch panels andLCDs from separate suppliers, the report added.

It said Japanese liquid crys-tal display makers Sharp andJapan Display Inc as well asSouth Korea's LG Display Cowere currently mass producingpanels for the next iPhone.

Apple is widely expected tolaunch the device in the thirdquarter of this year, around 12

months after the release of itshugely popular iPhone 4S --the firm's first new product fol-lowing the death of co-founderSteve Jobs.

An Apple spokeswoman de-clined to comment on the re-port or the next iPhone'srelease date when contacted byAFP.

The report came amidheated competition from rivalssuch as Samsung, whose flag-ship smartphone the Galaxy SIII uses a 4.8-inch (12.2 cen-timetre) screen that is thinnerthan the current iPhone.

Apple posted a $11.6 billionprofit in the first three monthsthis year, led by record sales ofiPad tablet computers andiPhones -- the latter surging 88percent year-on-year.

But as he began reading hisprinted remarks, Bagley indi-cated he was stepping downamid a reorganization of theLondon-based bank's compli-ance division.

"Now is the appropriatetime for me, and for the bank, for someone new to serve asthe head of group compliance,"Bagley said.

"I have agreed to work withthe bank's senior managementtoward an orderly transition ofthis important role."

Bagley did not say whetherhe was leaving the bank alto-gether.

WASHINGTON (AFP) -HSBC's head of complianceresigned yesterday in front ofa US Senate panel after law-makers released a damning re-port accusing the global bankof giving drug dealers and ter-rorists access to the US finan-cial system.

In prepared testimony,David Bagley told the SenateHomeland Security Subcom-mittee on Investigations that"there have been some signifi-cant areas of failure," and thatHSBC "has fallen short of ourown expectations and the ex-pectations of our regulators."

He pointed out that banksdid not appear to be manipula -ting the rate for profit andmoney did not always changehands amid a lack of liquidityin markets during the financialcrisis.

Barclays's fines paid to USand British regulators relatedto the manipulation of productsderived from Libor, rather thanthe manipulation of the rate it-self.

Under the slogan "TheWorld's Local Bank", the net-work that began life as theHong Kong and ShanghaiBanking Corporation providesUS dollars to HSBC banks inmany countries under a proce-dure known as "correspondentbanking."

But its compliance failuresclearly spun out of control.

The report said HSBC'sMexican affiliate "transported$7 billion in physical US dol-lars to HBUS from 2007 to2008... raising red flags thatthe volume of dollars includedproceeds from illegal drugsales in the United States."

And it said HBUS "pro-vided US dollars and bankingservices to some banks inSaudi Arabia and Bangladeshdespite links to terrorist financ-ing."

HSBC executives wereaware of the "concealed Iran-ian transactions" -- whichstripped all identifying Iranianinformation from documenta-tion -- as early as 2001 but al-lowed thousands of trans -actions to continue until 2007.

A review of HSBC's use ofso-called U-turn transactions,in which funds are sent intoand then out of the UnitedStates through non-Iranian fo -reign banks, showed the bankconducted almost 25,000 USdollar transactions with Iran.

"The vast majority of theIranian transactions, rangingfrom 75 to 90 percent over theyears, were sent throughHBUS and other US dollar ac-counts without disclosing anyconnection to Iran," accordingto the report.

WASHINGTON (AFP) -Shamed HSBC executives ad-mitted failing to apply anti-laundering rules on Monday,as lawmakers accused theglobal bank of giving Iran, ter-rorists and drug dealers accessto the US financial system.

With the banking sector al-ready under fire for manipula -ting interest rates and recklesstrading, HSBC said moreshould have been done to pre-vent years of abuse amountingto tens of billions of dollars ofillicit transactions.

The president of HSBCBank USA (HBUS), IreneDorner, apologized to US Sen-ators yesterday for what thebank has called its "unaccep -table" level of compliance overnearly a decade.

"I recognize that there havebeen some significant areas offailure," David Bagley, thehead of group compliance forLondon-based HSBC, said at ahearing of the Senate Home-land Security Subcommitteeon Investigations.

"HSBC has fallen short ofour own expectations and theexpectations of our regula-tors," he said.

While Bagley said the bankhas "learned a number of valu-able lessons" he acknowledgedthat this "clearly took far toolong to resolve."

"We'll get more informationon that as the investigationscontinue, but it's clear that be-yond these disclosures that theLibor system is structurallyflawed and part of the responsewas to address those flaws."

Emails also show that theNew York Fed -- which istasked with assessing thesafety and soundness of USbanks -- in June 2008 sharedits concerns with the Bank ofEngland, which regulates theterritory where the Libor isset.

Bernanke said that because"a relatively small number ofchanges" were actuallyadopted by the British authori-ties, he could not vouch for thereliability of the rate today.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Fe -deral Reserve Chairman BenBernanke said yesterday thatrevelations a key inter-banklending rate had been riggedwere "very troubling," under-mined confidence in the finan-cial system and should befixed.

Speaking to Congress,Bernanke said the disclosures, which have resulted in a largefine for British bank Barclays, showed the so-called Liborsystem was "structurallyflawed."

Under current rules, a smallpanel of banks submits an un-regulated estimate of what theywould pay to borrow fromeach other.

A central range is thenfound for the rate -- which un-derpins the cost of everythingfrom mortgages to credit cards.

"Libor is a critical bench-mark to many financial con-tracts," Bernanke told USlawmakers.

about five months, and oneday he invited me to dinner ata restaurant. Then he stared atme, slowly hugged me andasked if I wanted to be his fi-ancee," Rivera told thecelebrity magazine Quien in2011.

"It was the first time some-one asked, 'Do you want to bemy fiancee?' Of course I saidyes, and he answered: 'Say yesproperly.' And I repeated moreemphatically, 'Yes, ofcourse!'"

After months of dating, hepresented Rivera with an en-gagement ring while on a visitto the Vatican in December2009. Pope Benedict XVIeven blessed the dashing cou-ple.

At the time, Rivera was stillbasking in the glow of her suc-cess in the 2007 hit soap "Dis-tilling Love," and her role as"La Gaviota," a field handwho falls in love with her em-ployer's handsome grandson.

TV cameras were not insidethe cathedral of Toluca -- inthe capital of the State ofMexico -- when the couplemarried in November 2010,but they were outside to filmthe A-list celebrity guests.Photos of the event were laterreleased to the media.

The couple, of course, posed for pictures on theirway out -- and Rivera threwher bouquet to fans. Bothwaved and blew kisses to thecrowd.

Having Rivera as the coun-try's first lady is so jarring thata joke e-mail, purportedly sentby Pena Nieto's InstitutionalRevolutionary Party (PRI),

has been making the rounds."If you have a picture of

the future first lady of Mexicoon the wall of your tire repairshop, please take it down,"reads the e-mail message. Itincludes pictures of a youngerRivera wearing skimpy biki-nis.

Born August 2, 1970,Rivera started her career as ateenage model, winning abeauty and talent contest atthe age of 17.

She was quickly taken inby Televisa, Mexico's giantentertainment and news con-glomerate, and was mentoredby Veronica Castro, thedoyenne of Mexican soap op-eras. Years later, the two be-came in-laws when Riveramarried Castro's brother, Tele-visa producer Jose AlbertoCastro.

Early in her career, Riveraappeared as a model in avideo with Mexican superstarsinger Luis Miguel, and bythe late 1980s she was appear-ing in secondary roles Tele-visa soaps.

In 1991, now with diedblonde hair, she made a bigsplash in her role as the "bad"girl in the telenovela "Reachfor a Star II," flirting with aninnocent secondary actor --the not-yet famous singerRicky Martin.

"All men are unfaithful,"the young actress joked in aTV interview at the time, brought back to life viaYouTube. In another she talksabout the importance of herbottom, and how she flirtswith men.

In the Soap opera ‘La Gaviota”

MEXICO CITY (AFP) - An-gelica Rivera is known as "LaGaviota" or The Seagull, thewoman she portrayed in a hittelenovela, but Mexicans willsoon have to get accustomedto addressing the former soapstar as First Lady.

When Rivera, 41, marriedMexico's next president En-rique Pena Nieto in November2010 she was more famousthan him, and the soap starwas a magnet for TV fans onthe campaign trail, attractingyoung hordes that rarely vote.

She said little and did notspeak to reporters while herhusband campaigned but wasoften by his side, sometimeswith children in tow.

At rallies, adoring fanswould try to pose for a picturewith her, ask for her autographor to give her a kiss. "Gaviota!Gaviota!" they cried out frombehind metal fences set up tocontain the crowds.

There are plenty of picturesof Rivera in skimpy outfits, often posing with muscular,bare-chested men -- such asthe October 1992 cover of awrestling magazine where sheposes with a practically nakedwrestler called "BlackMagic."

But despite the glossy cov-ers, Rivera has had a scandal-free life as she makes thetransition from soap star toone half of Mexico's politicalpower couple.

The 45-year-old PenaNieto, who looks the part of atelenovela heartthrob himself, married his first wife MonicaPretelini in 1993, and the cou-ple had three children.

The then governor of theState of Mexico, home to 15percent of Mexico's 112 mil-lion people, admitted father-ing children outside hismarriage with two differentwomen, but Pretelini died in2007 of an epileptic fit.

The following year he metRivera, who was divorced andalso had three children. Shewas one of the Televisa starsthat Pena Nieto hired in a con-troversial state program topublicize his good govern-ment work.

The relationship betweenthe politician and the actresswas at first discreet, some sayeven contrived. The two wereseen together in restaurants, but their public displays of af-fection were timid.

When Pena Nieto an-nounced that he was datingRivera on a celebrity newsshow, the story became fodderfor both political wonks andthe celebrity press.

The Code states that whenan "athlete can establish thatthe use of such a specifiedsubstance was not intended toenhance sport performance, the period of ineligibility...shall be replaced with the fol-lowing."
