Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 16th

From the desk of Monsignor Charles J. Parry:

I arrived at Saint Patrick Church this past Wednesday and am spending some time moving in and getting acquainted with the property and the various buildings and figuring out the common things like keys and locks, light switches, and where things are for the celebration of the Mass. It is going to take some time as you might suspect.

I am a local Washingtonian by birth. I was born in the old Sibley Hospital in the District of Columbia in 1955. I grew up in Langley Park and then in Beltsville, MD being the second oldest of five boys. I attended Catholic school for a few years and then public school having graduated from High Point High School in Beltsville. I began seminary training right out of high school attending St. Pius X Seminary/University of Scranton, PA and then Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD. I was ordained to the priesthood in 1981 by James Cardinal Hickey.

I have enjoyed assignments in five parishes including St. Peter’s in Waldorf, St. Joseph’s in Beltsville, St. Bernard’s in Riverdale, St. Mark’s in Hyattsville and Sacred Heart in Bowie. In that period of time I also held the position of Assistant Secretary for Catholic Education in the Archdiocese over a span of 10 years. I have enjoyed being the pastor of Sacred Heart for the past 18 years. As you might imagine, it was very painful for me to leave as the parishioners there had truly become my family over that length of time and I grew to love them very much and enjoyed being with them. I am hopeful that in time I will come to love the parishioners here at St. Patrick in much the same way.

I look forward to meeting you! It will take me some time to learn names and faces. I trust that you will be patient with me! Msgr. Tom Kane, former pastor here, assisted me at Sacred Heart for a number of years after his retirement. He has nothing but very good things to say about you and about St. Patrick Church!

BULLETIN NOTICES:

The deadline for all bulletin announcements is 10:00 a.m. on the Friday 9 days prior to the Sunday of publication. Inclusion in the Sunday bulletin is not guaranteed for items delivered after the Friday deadline. Announcements may be emailed, mailed or faxed to the Rectory Office. All announcements are subject to Pastor’s approval prior to publication in the bulletin.

Please check out our Website for more detailed information about St. Patrick’s Parish life regarding School of Religion, Weddings, Funerals, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Choir, Ushers, Arimatheans, Sports Programs, Leisure Club, Social Concerns, and Knights of Columbus.

POOR BOX: Our Poor Box donations next week will benefit Chase Partnership House. The Chase Partnership House provides shelter and care to men who are working to overcome addiction. Managed by Catholic Charities, Chase offers case management services, substance abuse counseling, mental health counseling, as well as access to education and employment programs. Their goal is to prepare each resident to leave the shelter free of addiction and equipped with the skills and confidence to live independently. St. Patrick’s provides meals for this shelter on a weekly basis and clothing and other donations through our Partners in Faith drives. A donation would provide another way to support this critical program.

LEGION OF MARY will meet on Monday, July 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the

Parish Center. Please come if you feel the call of Our Lady to serve her in this special apostolic work. The Legion of Mary also brings the Pilgrim Virgin statue to homes. For more information on the Legion of Mary or to schedule a visit of the Pilgrim Virgin statue, please contact Judith Richardson, 301-943-4567, [email protected].

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION:

“Stay and keep watch with me.” One soul coming before the Blessed Sacrament can change the world! Adoration begins after the 9:10 a.m. Mass on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in the Chapel of St. Therèsé and on Tuesday in the Church and continues until the Eucharist is reposed at 8:00 p.m. each evening. Blood Pressure Screenings will resume in September.

“Whosoever Dies in this Garment Shall Not Suffer Eternal Fire”

This is Mary’s promise made July 16, 1261 to St. Simon Stock. There will be an Investiture, or renewal, of the Brown Scapular on Monday, July 17, Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, following the 9:10 a.m. Mass. Scapulars will be provided courtesy of St. Patrick’s. This is a magnificent privilege to all the laity who are willing to be invested in the BROWN SCAPULAR. “Wear it devoutly and perseveringly, it is my garment. To be clothed in it means you are continually thinking of me, and I in turn, am always thinking of you and helping you to secure eternal life.” PAINT EVENT AT MUSE PAINTBAR: Enjoy painting with a purpose to raise funds for our choir pilgrimage next year. Join St. Patrick’s Choir for a unique and fun experience at Muse Paintbar, 217 Boardwalk Pl. #225, Gaithersburg on Saturday, July 29 from noon to 2:30 p.m. Create your own masterpiece which you will get to take home. No experience is required and you will work with real artists. Tickets can be purchased at www.goo.gl/eDilB5. Contact Terry Robinson at [email protected] or 240-342-6021 for more information.

ARIMATHEANS: The Society of St. Joseph of Arimathea is comprised of a group of retired or semi-retired men and women who perform the Corporal Work of Mercy of burying the dead at St. Patrick’s. The name is derived from the man who offered Jesus a tomb after his crucifixion. The Arimatheans assist at all funeral masses as servers, ministers of Holy Communion, and as lectors if the family is not able to do the readings. They are a great service to the bereaved family by guiding them through the funeral and assisting them with the duties the family usually performs during the funeral. We need additional men and women so that an individual Arimathean need serve only once in a 5 to 7 week period. If you are retired or semi-retired we want you! If you are interested or need more information, please get in touch with Philip Doerr, 301-294-9481 or [email protected]. BACK-TO-SCHOOL DRIVE COMING SOON! Partners in Faith is collecting back-to-school supplies for families at Stepping Stones family shelter in Rockville and Assumption Parish in DC Ward 8. PIF runs several drives a year to support various area shelters and always welcomes volunteers. The school supply drive will take place after Masses July 22-23 and July 29-30, 5:30 Saturday, 6:30, 8:00, 9:30 and 11:30 Sunday. Please see bulletin insert for additional details. ST. PATRICK’S LADIES BRIDGE MARATHON GROUP IS ACCEPTING NEW MEMBERS. We play twice a month from September through May. If you are interested in joining us, please call Kay Bidinger, 301-774-6843.

CHANGE IN EMAIL FOR ST. PATRICK’S: ST. PATRICK’S HAS A NEW EMAIL ADDRESS – [email protected]. PLEASE NOTE: THE PREVIOUS VERIZON EMAIL IS NO LONGER A WORKING EMAIL.

PLEASE USE THE NEW EMAIL WHEN GETTING IN TOUCH WITH ST. PATRICK’S. STORAGE SPACE needed for St. Patrick’s Furnishings for Families Ministry which provides basic furnishings for families transitioning out of shelters into their new homes. We supply families with donated pieces of furniture, and need a secure place to store donations until families are ready to move. (Though not essential, this space might also provide an area where furniture could be repaired, painted, touched-up, as needed.) If you have available storage space (garage, barn, storage unit) please contact Monica Ludwig at [email protected] or 301-924-2285 x315

CYO INTRAMURAL SOCCER COMMISSIONER NEEDED: We need a parent

volunteer to run our Intramural Soccer Program. The Intramural Soccer Program, for grades K-2 for boys and K-3 for girls, is one of St. Patrick’s CYO’s longest running traditions and a popular sport every fall and spring. The commissioner will oversee a seven-game season, with about 40 to 50 kids competing on several different teams. Practices are held during the week and the games are on Saturday morning. It all takes place on the field at Flower Valley Elementary. Interested? Email Bob Crismond at [email protected]. LITTLE DISCIPLES IN ACTION: DOING SMALL THINGS WITH GREAT LOVE: We are a new ministry aimed at providing community service opportunities to children ages 4-10 but children of all ages are welcome to attend as long as they are accompanied by an adult. We meet the second Saturday of every month at the Parish Center. Our next project will be on August 12 from 9:00 to 11:00 to make Rosaries and cards for the Cup O’Joe program. Please feel free to come for the full 2 hours or to drop in as you are able to help us out. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Emily Chesterton at [email protected] or 970-343-2944. Hope to see you and your little ones there!

Thousands of young adults and young families will gather this summer for inspiring TED-style talks by dynamic Catholic bishops,

inspiring multicultural entertainment, and engaging break-out groups focused on our God-given identity and purpose. At the heart of the

event, there will be amazing worship and incredible opportunities for prayer and the sacraments. This event will be similar to the

international world youth day experience, but at a national level during the off years of the international World Youth Day. As such, the

festival this year will reflect upon the national World Youth Day theme chosen by Pope Francis himself, “The Mighty One Has Done

Great Things for Me and Holy is His Name.” Above all, this event is a moment of national unity and authentic communion for all young

adults living and working in a broken, polarized, and divided country. His Holiness Pope Francis encourages us: “If we wish to lead a

dignified and fulfilling life, we have to reach out to others and seek their good” (Evangelii Gaudium, 9). Organizers still need
