The PawSox returned to action last night following the three-day Triple-A All-Star break and began this series (and 4-game homestand) with a 7-3 victory…scoring their most runs in a game since an 8-1 win over Syracuse on June 24 (15 games ago). This evening the PawSox will bid to win two in a row for the first time since June 24 (8-1 vs. Syracuse) and June 25 (3-2 at Buffalo). Pawtucket has gone win, loss, loss, win, loss, win, loss, win to get to 4-4 thus far in July. This Series and Homestand – The 5th-place PawSox and the last-place Chiefs play again tonight at 7:05 pm, tomorrow (Saturday) at 6:15 pm, and Sunday at 1:35 pm. Incredibly, tonight is one of just four home Friday night games remaining this season for the PawSox. What Have You Done for Me Lately – Despite losing 9 of their last 13 games, Pawtucket is 10-10 in their last 20 games. After winning 6 of 7 games from June 19 (G2) to June 25, the PawSox suffered a 5-game losing streak from June 26-30 (which matched their season-high from May 23-26) before snapping that skid with a 2-0 victory at Scranton/WB on June 30. The Sox had a pair of 4-game winning streaks last month from June 10-13 and G2 on June 19-22. Those fell one shy of equaling their longest of the season when the Sox won 5 straight from May 27-31. Over a longer stretch, Pawtucket is 15-14 in their last 29 games and they have won 23 of their last 42 games since May 27. Before that, the Sox had lost 15 of their previous 19 games from May 7-26. Getting to Know You – Pawtucket is 7-4 this season vs. Syracuse after going 15-5 vs. the Chiefs last year. These clubs will have met a total of 10 times over a one month span since June 11 through Sunday, July 15…including this 4-game set in Pawtucket (Sox won the opener last night, 7-3). Syracuse recently made their first visit to McCoy this season three weeks ago with the PawSox taking 2 of 3 from June 22-24. The teams will face each other again at the end of this month for a 4-game series in Syracuse from July 30 – August 2 that will conclude their season-series. Overall these two teams will face each other 18 times this season…11 in Syracuse and 7 in Pawtucket. 2018 Season-Series vs. Syracuse – The PawSox most recently won 2 of 3 over the Chiefs at McCoy from June 22-24…the Sox won the opener, 5-4; the Chiefs were 5-3 winners the next night; and the PawSox rolled to an 8-1 victory in the rubber game on the afternoon of June 24. Pawtucket had previously swept a 3-game series in Syracuse from June 11-13. The PawSox won by scores of 3-1, 5-3 (rallying for 3 runs in the top of the 9th to win that game) and then completed the sweep with a 5-1 victory on June 13. Syracuse took 3 of 4 from the PawSox one month prior to that at NBT Bank Stadium in their first series against each other. The Chiefs won the opener on May 10, 6-4; the Sox notched their only victory of the series the next night, 12-2; but Syracuse won both games over the weekend by 6-5 and 9-1 scores on May 12 & 13. Stats vs. the ‘Cuse - The Sox are hitting .277 in the 11 games vs. the Chiefs (102-for-368) with 7 HR (2 by Lind and 1 each from Ohlman, Olt, De Jesus, Hernandez, and Tavarez) and have scored 58 runs scored (5.3 runs/game). Sox pitchers vs. the Chiefs are 7-4 with a 3.55 ERA (38 ER in 96.1 IP) allowing 41 runs (with 6 homers for Syracuse). 2017 Season-Series vs. Syracuse – Pawtucket will have to go a ways to have similar success against Syracuse this season as they did last year when they went 15-5 vs. the Chiefs including a 9-1 record at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse. The PawSox were actually 15-2 at one point vs. Syracuse last season before getting swept in a 3-game set last August 1-3 vs. the Chiefs at McCoy. The 15 wins in 2017 against one opponent in a season tied a PawSox franchise-record…the Sox have won 15 games against an International League club on a couple of occasions – most recently prior to last year when they went 15-1 vs. Lehigh Valley in 2008 – but they have never won 16 games vs. another IL team in a single season. Stats vs. the Chiefs in 2017 - The PawSox out-scored the Chiefs, 107-61 in the season-series in 2017. The Sox hit .293 in the 20 games vs. Syracuse (easily their best against any other club) with 25 HR including 7 HR by Rusney Castillo (Rusney hit .368 in 18 games vs. the Chiefs with 9 2B, 7 HR and 16 RBI last year). PawSox pitchers went 15-5 with a 3.05 ERA vs. Syracuse last year. Series Business – Pawtucket – up 1-0 in this 4-game set - is 10-15-4 in their first 29 series of the season (10 wins, 15 losses, and 4 splits). They have posted three 3-game sweeps this season along with a 2-game sweep and a 1-game sweep (in Rochester on July 4). July Underway – The Sox are 4-4 thus far in July batting .206 (52-for-252) with 5 HR and posting a 3.00 ERA (24 ER in 72 IP). They are now scheduled to play 26 games in 31 days this July. Pawtucket went 15-14 last July. Last Tune in June – The PawSox – due to a 5-game losing skid to end the month of June – finished with a losing record in June at 14-15. They hit .258 with 27 HR in 29 games during the month along with a 3.41 ERA. Pawtucket finished 11-10 this April and 13-17 this May (hitting just .227 in May). They had their best month of last season in June going 17-14. A Hectic May - The PawSox finished an extremely busy May with a 13-17 record for the month. The topsy-turvy travel month included four different homestands and four different roadtrips. Pitchers posted a 3.60 ERA in May while batters hit .227 with 22 HR and 97 runs in 30 May games (for an average of 3.2 runs per game). The Sox played 30 games in 31 days in May with just one scheduled off-day (May 17) during the entire month. April Comes up a Winner – The PawSox posted a winning April for the 6th time in the last 8 years as they finished the month with an 11-10 record and in 2nd-place in the IL North (-2 GB of front-running Syracuse at the time). Pawtucket has had just one losing month of April since 2010 and that came last year (10-12). The Sox hit .233 in April with 16 HR in 21 games while pitchers were 11-10 with a 3.51 ERA along with a league-leading 230 strikeouts in 190 innings. Trending – The PawSox (now at 42-46) were a season-low 8-games below .500 on May 26 at 19-27. It was their lowest point since they ended last year with a 67-75 record. On May 6 the Sox had matched their season-high of 3-games over the .500 mark (15-12) from April 28 when they were 11-8. One and Done – The PawSox are 16-11 in 1-run games this season (.593) – the 2nd best winning pct. in 1-run affairs in the league behind Columbus (12-8, .600). Throwing Strikes – Pawtucket pitchers are 2nd in the International League with 805 strikeouts. Durham leads with 830 SO. Sox hurlers have posted strikeout games of 20 (April 9), 18 (April 20 & July 8), 15 (three times), 14 (twice), 13 (twice), 12 (five times), 11 (four times), and 10 (16 times) this season.

Hit or Miss – PawSox batters were last in the league in team batting for most of May and into June, but they are now 12th with their .237 average…it was .242 on June 24 which was their highest since April 28 also at .242. Defensive – The PawSox have made just 1 errors in their last 10 games. Last year the PawSox led the International League with a .987 fielding pct. while making a league-low 64 errors on the season (both new franchise-records). This season the Sox are 12th in the league with a .979 fielding pct. (65 errors in 3049 total chances) as their 65 errors are one more than all of last year. Working Overtime – Pawtucket is 5-2 in extra inning games this season (tied with Columbus for the best pct. in the league). Pawtucket has played five overtime games at home (winning 4 of those 5 extra inning games at McCoy). Until their 7-6 loss in 10-innings at Scranton/WB on June 30, the Sox had not been involved in an extra inning game since May 14 (a 6-5, 10-inning win vs. Buffalo). Blanketed – The PawSox have been shutout a league-high 9 times this season (Columbus has also been shutout 9 times as well). Pawtucket was blanked 9 times total in 2017. They went 18-9 in shuout games last year. They are 6-9 in shutout games thus far in 2018. Prior to the 4-0 loss in Game 1 to Buffalo on June 19, the Sox had not been blanked since May 20 (3-0 at Rochester). A Look Back Before We Go Forth – Pawtucket finished 67-75 last year and in 4th-place in the IL North for the second straight season. They dropped to a season-low 9-games under .500 on August 26 at 62-71. On July 18, 2017 the PawSox were a season-best 6-games over .500 at 50-44. Pawtucket finished 34-36 in games played at McCoy Stadium last season. Thus they finished with just their second losing season at McCoy in the last 8 years. The Sox went 33-39 on the road. BOSTON RED SOX DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM – Portland (35-53) – The Portland Sea Dogs (AA) edged New Hampshire, 5-4 last night. Michael Chavis, who just recently made his 2018 Portland debut, crushed a 2-run HR (#1). Jeremy Rivera and Danny Mars both had 2 hits and scored a run. Dedgar Jimenez started – 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 SO. The win went to Travis Lakins (2-2) with a scoreless inning of relief while Jordan Weems worked a scoreless 9th for SV #3. Salem (12-9)/(44-45) – The Salem Red Sox (A) fell to Winston-Salem, 6-5 last night. Tanner Houck dropped to 4-11 – 6 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 4 SO. Deiner Lopez and Michael Osinski each had a single and a double. Greenville (11-9)/(36-53) – The Greenville Drive (A) had their game at home vs. Rome suspended in the bottom of the 2nd-inning (no score) due to rain. The teams will resume that game today at 4:00 pm to be followed by the regularly-scheduled game. Lowell (12-14) – The Lowell Spinners (short-A) rolled past Auburn, 6-1 last night. SUNDAY BRONSON ARROYO ON COX LEGENDS DAY 1:35 pm vs. Syracuse The PawSox will once again host a “Legends Day” at McCoy this summer, presented by Cox Communications, on Sunday and this year’s guest is 2004 Red Sox World Series Champion and former PawSox pitcher Bronson Arroyo. 15 years ago Bronson tossed just the fourth perfect game in the history of the International League on August 10, 2003 in a 7-0 win over Buffalo at McCoy. Arroyo appeared in 419 MLB games with Boston, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Arizona. Bronson will throw the Ceremonial First Pitch before Pawtucket’s 1:35 pm game against Syracuse on Sunday and greet PawSox fans during the game at the Vertikal 6 Fan Center on the main concourse behind home plate at McCoy.

PAWSOX PLAYER MOVES – The Red Sox today recalled 1B/OF Sam Travis from Pawtucket (placing Andrew Benintendi on the bereavement list). Travis has appeared in four games (three starts) in one stint with Boston this season, going 2-for-12 with a walk and three RBI. He has also hit .224 (46-for-205) with six home runs in 57 games for Pawtucket, including .346 (9-for-26) with two homers in his last eight games. Travis has started 31 games at first base, 17 in left field, and nine at designated hitter with the PawSox. The PawSox today placed OF Rusney Castillo on the 7-day disabled list (retro to July 12) with a groin strain suffered while running out and infield single in the 4th-inning of last Sunday’s game vs. Scranton/WB. Castillo was removed from the IL All-Star roster and did not go to Columbus for the Triple-A All-Star Game this past Wednesday. Pawtucket added two players to their roster today. One is a familiar face as INF Jantzen Witte is back from Double-A Portland. Witte began this season with the PawSox and hit .217 in 13 games (10-fo-42) with 1 HR & 6 RBI (playing 12 games at 3B). He was transferred to Portland on May 12 and in 54 games for the Sea Dogs was hitting .265 with 8 HR & 39 RBI (playing 27 games at 3B, 18 at 1B, 10 in the OF, and 1 at 2B). The other newcomer is very new…INF Jonathan Ortega, who was just selected by the Red Sox in the 19th round of this past June’s draft out of Texas State University, has been transferred from Lowell (short-season A).
