Today’s worship focus:

Love God above all things

Greeting

Opening Hymn: 452 “Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus” verses 1

Let us ever walk with Jesus,

Follow his example pure,

Flee the world which would deceive us

And to sin our souls allure.

Ever in his footsteps treading,

Body here, yet soul above,

Full of faith and hope and love,

Let us do the Father's bidding.

Faithful Lord, abide with me.

Savior, lead; I follow thee.

Confession & Forgiveness of Sins

Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Church: Amen.

Minister: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve

him as his dear children. But, we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath

and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

Church: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless

ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But,

trusting in Jesus Christ, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your

unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

Minister: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and

innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are

his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

Church: Amen.

Song of Praise

Minister: In the peace of forgiveness, let us sing praise to the Lord!

Responsive Words Romans 15:5-6

Minister: May God give us a spirit of unity.

Church: May we follow Jesus with one heart and glorify God together!

Prayer of the Day

Minister: Almighty God, you have prepared joy for us beyond our understanding.

Despite the challenges we face in life, lift our eyes from loving the things of this world

so that we love you above all things and reflect your love to others; through, Jesus

Christ our Lord.

Church: Amen.

The Word of God

Children’s Message Matthew 10:37

Jesus loves me, this I know,

for the Bible tells me so.

Little ones to Him belong;

they are weak, but He is strong

Yes Jesus loves me! –

The Bible tells me so.

Love God first, over everything!

The children’s message concludes with the prayer below.

Minister: Dear Jesus, because you teach the truth…

Church: We are forgiven! Amen.

Scripture Reading 1 John 2:15-17

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love

of the Father is not in him. 16 For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man,

the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the

Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who

does the will of God lives forever.

Psalm Prelude

Psalm of the Day Psalm 89 selected verses

Minister: I will sing of the LORD’s great love forever;

Church: I will make your faithfulness known through all generations.

I will declare that your love stands firm forever,

that you established your faithfulness in heaven.

The heavens praise your wonders, O LORD,

your faithfulness too.

O LORD God Almighty, who is like you?

You are mighty, O LORD. Your faithfulness surrounds you.

Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,

who walk in the light of your presence.

They rejoice in your name all day long;

they exult in your righteousness.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Gospel Reading Matthew 10:34-42

34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to

bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn ‘a man against his father, a daughter

against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— 36 a man’s enemies

will be the members of his own household.’ 37 “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone

who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38 and anyone who

does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will

lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 40 “He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who

sent me. 41 Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a

prophet’s reward, and anyone who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous

man will receive a righteous man’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold

water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will

certainly not lose his reward.”

Minister: This is the Gospel of our Lord.

Church: Praise be to you, O Christ!

Hymn of the Day: 465 “Jesus, I My Cross Have Taken” verse 1

Jesus, I my cross have taken,

All to leave and follow you.

Destitute, despised, forsaken,

You on earth once suffered, too.

Perish ev'ry fond ambition,

All I've ever hoped or known;

Yet how rich is my condition!

God and heav'n are still my own.

Sermon 1 John 2:15-17

Vicar Mark Zondag

You can’t have it both ways

1. God and the world don’t mix

2. The one doing the will of God lasts

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Christian Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Offering – An offering of financial gifts of thanks is gathered following the hymn.

The Prayer of the Church

A general prayer and any prayer requests will be included at this time.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy

will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and

forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead

us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the

power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

Minister: Brothers and sisters, go in peace, live in harmony with one another,

and serve the Lord with gladness.

The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look upon you with his favor and give you his peace.

Church: Amen.

Closing Hymn: 355 “Take The World, But Give Me Jesus” verse 1

Take the world, but give me Jesus!

All its joys are but a name.

But his love abides forever,

Through eternal years the same.

Oh, the height and depth of mercy;

Oh, the length and breadth of love!

Oh, the fullness of redemption,

Pledge of endless life above!
