Connie Hitt opened the meeting, read a humorous “grocery prayer list” and lead the group in prayer.

We welcomed Jac Bedrossian from WDAM to the meeting and she shot a video segment for Good News which aired on the 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 WDAM newscasts that evening. She sent this message: Thank you for inviting us! You can see the video by going to this link: http://buff.ly/2tfvlBp.

Connie reported that the PBQ made $321.50 from the auction of donated items held at our June meeting.

Mary Nell Magee thanked everyone for their contributions to Children’s Quilts. Today we had 202 quilts to share with seven different community groups.

Joe and Betty Bingham reported that they had taken in 28 pillows and six blankets and ten mother pads.

Betty Herrin reported receiving 12 walker totes and six catheter bag covers. She

said that she has had requests for totes and covers from some additional nursing homes. She plans to set up a day to get folks together at her house to make totes and covers. She will let us know when that will be. Please try to attend and lend a helping hand.

This was our summer meeting to distribute quilts to the community. We welcomed Destiny Buckley of the Domestic Abuse Family Shelter. The shelter is currently working out of the Laurel office while renovating the Hattiesburg office which will be opening in September. The Laurel shelter can assist approximately 16 people, depending on the dynamics of the family. The Hattiesburg shelter will be able to assist about 43. Destiny said that many of their clients arrive at the shelter without any possessions. It’s exciting to be able to give these women something that they can take with them when they leave.

Center which is part of Canopy Children’s Solutions. They serve children from the ages of nine to 20 who are victims of abuse. They usually have twelve to fifteen children at a time. Annie told us that sometimes children arrive at their facility with only the clothes on their backs. Sometimes they don’t even have shoes. They usually have twelve to fifteen children at a time. Alicia of Child Protection Services told us about Run Away and Safe Places services.

Lt. Adrian Barham of the Hattiesburg Fire Department told us that the quilts they receive help comfort children in a crisis situation. Tragedies are particularly hard on small children dealing with house fires, accidents on the highways, storms and floods. It means a lot to be able to give these children quilts and teddy bears. The eight Hattiesburg fire stations currently handle five to six thousand calls a year.

Leigh Ann Leonard of Forrest General Hospital’s NICU thanked us for bringing a lot of people together through our quilting. Leigh Ann told us that the patients they have are sometimes scared and sad. Sometimes they don’t have anything from home. It’s a blessing to have something to give them in the way of comfort.

Ashton Thompson and Ornisha Brown of the Shafer Center for Crisis Intervention told us the majority of their services go to victims of sexual assault, both children and adults. They also have groups to assist family and friends who have lost someone due to homicide or suicide. Ashton told us that many of their recipients wrap themselves in the quilts and that makes them feel better. (We missed Riley Herrin who has visited with us for many years. Riley has gone on to a new job.)

Howard Franklin of Merit Health Wesley told us a humorous story about remembering why you are doing something. He told us that we haven’t forgotten the reason we started quilting. They are very appreciative of our donations.

Anna Stuart Everett and Pam Emory from Advocates for Freedom thanked us for our contributions. AFF is dedicated to preventing human trafficking.

We held our Parade of Children’s Quilts. There were 16 entries this year. The winners were: (first) Betty Allen, (second) Kathy Houseal and (third) Jamie Martin. Jamie is the grandson of PBQ member Jo Ellen Carr.

After the business part of our meeting, group leaders set up and our guests joined us in a delicious lunch catered by Stonewall’s BBQ. Several PBQ members brought desserts.

On August 9, the PBQ meeting will be a “Trim the Tree” Trunk Show of Christmas Quilts by Frances Good. The August 23 workshop will be a “Boutique Workshop” led by Shirley Wiltshire and Frances Good.

The September 13 PBQ meeting will be “Graffiti Quilting” with Teresa Pino of Hernando, Mississippi. The workshop on the day following the meeting will require preregistering at our August 9 meeting. The cost of the workshop is $65 (checks should be made out to Teresa) which includes class fee, a quilted panel and the use of Teresa’s crayons. Teresa’s graffiti quilting class at the June MQA meeting was very popular. Her website is quilts2at.com

The October 11 meeting will be a trunk show with Cynthia England of Dickinson, Texas. The workshop on the day following the meeting will require preregistering at our September 13 meeting as well. The cost of the workshop will be $67 which includes class fee, pattern and fabric kit. Members will be required to pay $30 when registering (checks should be made out to PBQ) and the remaining $37 will be paid at the workshop. Cynthia will have credit card capabilities and will accept cash or checks. Cynthia’s “Reflections of Cape Town” won Best of Show at the 2016 Houston Quilt Show. Her “Piece and Quiet” was named one of “The Twentieth Century’s Best American Quilts.”Her website is englanddesign.com
