The writer of the Book of Wisdom (1:13) tells us that “God did not make death, nor does he rejoice in the destruction of the living.” He wants us to flourish, he wants us to join him in eternal life. For this we need to love him and love each other as he commanded us. That is why Christ left us the Church so we could be encouraged and have a path to follow which is sure. Together we are more likely to succeed than by ourselves. In order for that to happen we need to be free to practice our faith. Not only in daily worship or Sunday worship but to practice our faith in everyday life. To be free to do as our well-formed conscience tells us. That means not our will but His Divine Will be done. We are lucky to live in a country where these freedoms are respected. These are rights which are inalienable — they cannot be taken from us. And they are self-evident — we don’t have to explain why. Yet every so often someone wants to limit our freedoms. We have to struggle constantly to preserve these rights. Thomas Jefferson said, “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants.” Luckily the Founding Fathers set up a structure where shedding of blood was not necessary. Right action, conviction and a good lawyer may be enough. But we have to stand tough and together for our convictions in helping the most vulnerable: the unborn, the elderly: these have no advocate. Also to be mindful of the poor and the suffering. In our workplace to not be forced to do something which goes against the convictions of our faith. To be allowed to raise our family in the faith. All this without interference from the government as guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution. Lets make time this week to thank God for the liberties won for us by the blood of our founders. And let’s protect these hard won freedoms.

A Message from Pastor Fr. Michael Fragoso

Parish Intention of the month Celebrating freedom, we pray that the precious Blood of Jesus continues to sustain us, as we strive to remain free from sin, remembering that the greatest freedom we enjoy is the freedom to choose what is right.
