T he Port is the official weekly
bulletin of the Rotary Club of
Freeport Zone (Subic Bay).
Founded in the spirit of the true ideals
and object of Rotary—of truth and fair-
ness, selfless service, and faithful friend-
ship and fellowship. It was this vision of
a new Rotary Club, with a deeper com-
mitment and conviction to the principles
of Rotary that inspired Raul Peralta,
then outgoing centennial president (RY
2004-2005) of RC Subic Bay to go
about the arduous task of Rotary exten-
sion.
As he envisioned, the new club would
be situated in the Subic Bay Freeport
Zone, where the sun meets the sea, ad
the bay opens up to the ocean. Like the
Freeport Zone, the new club would open
up to new horizons and reach out to the
world. Like the port, it would carry
enormous loads to fulfill its motto
“Service Abive Self”. Like ships, it
would transport and carry out Rotary’s
mission to promote universal goodwill
and understanding.

I call you when I need you, my
heart's on fire
You come to me, come to me wild
and wired
Mmm, you come to me
Give me everything I need
Give me a lifetime of promises and
a world of dreams
Speak a language of love like you
know what it means
Mmm, it can't be wrong
Take my heart and make it strong,
baby
You're simply the best, better than
all the rest
Better than anyone, anyone I've ever
met
I'm stuck on your heart, I hang on
every word you say
Tear us apart no, no, baby, I would
rather be dead
In your heart I see the star of every
night and every day
In your eyes I get lost, I get washed
away
Just as long as I'm here in your
arms
I could be in no better place
You're simply the best, better
than all the rest
Better than anyone, anyone I've
ever met
I'm stuck on your heart, I hang on
every word you say
Tear us apart no, no, baby, I
would rather be dead
Each time you leave me I start
losing control
You're walking away with my
heart and my soul
I can feel you even when I'm
alone
Oh baby, don't let go
Ooh you're the best (woo)
Better than all the rest
Better than anyone, anyone I've
ever met
Ooh, I'm stuck on your heart,
I hang on every word you say
Don't tear us apart no, no, no,
Baby, I would rather be dead
Oooh, you're the best!

WHY THE
ROTARY
YEAR
BEGINS 1
JULY
The international convention initially
played a key role in determining the start
date of our fiscal and administrative
year.
Ever wonder why the Rotary year begins
1 July? The international convention
initially played a key role in determining
the start date of our fiscal and
administrative year.
Rotary's first fiscal year began the day
after the first convention ended, on 18
August 1910. The 1911-12 fiscal year
also related to the convention, beginning
with the first day of the 1911 convention
on 21 August.
At its August 1912 meeting, the Board of
Directors ordered an audit of the
International Association of Rotary
Clubs' finances. The auditors
recommended that the organization end
its fiscal year on 30 June to give the
secretary and treasurer time to prepare a
financial statement for the convention
and board, and determine the proper
number of club delegates to the
convention.
The executive committee concurred, and
at its April 1913 meeting, designated 30
June as the end of the fiscal year. This
also allowed for changes to the schedule
for reporting club membership and
payments. Even The Rotarian changed its
volume numbering system to correspond
to the fiscal year (beginning with vol. 5,
July 1914).
Rotary continued to hold its annual
conventions in July or August until 1917.
Delegates to the 1916 event in
Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, approved a
resolution to hold future conventions in
June, mainly because of the heat in cities
where most of them occurred. The next
one was held 17-21 June in Atlanta,
Georgia.
The term "Rotary year" has been used to
signify Rotary's annual administrative
period since at least 1913. An article in
The Rotarian that July noted, "The Rotary
year that is rapidly drawing to a close has
been signalized by several highly
successful joint meetings of Clubs that are
so situated as to assemble together easily
and conveniently."
Since the executive committee's decision
in 1913, the end of the Rotary year has
remained 30 June.

“Lupang Hinirang “
PHILIPPINE NATIONAL ANTHEM
Bayang magiliw
Perlas ng Silanganan,
Alab ng puso,
Sa dibdib mo'y buhay.
Lupang Hinirang,
Duyan ka ng magiting,
Sa manlulupig,
Di ka pasisiil.
Sa dagat at bundok,
Sa simoy at sa langit mong
bughaw,
May dilag ang tula
At awit sa paglayang minama-
hal.
Ang kislap ng watawat mo'y
Tagumpay na nagniningning,
Ang bituin at araw niya
Kailan pa ma'y di magdidilim.
Lupa ng araw, ng luwalhati't
pagsinta,
Buhay ay langit sa piling mo;
Aming ligaya, na pag may mang
-aapi
Ang mamatay ng dahil sa iyo.
