Nous sommes une grande famille.
Principal: Linda Taglieri Superintendent: Daniel Wu
Acting Vice-Principal: Omari White Trustee: Nadeem Mahmood Administrators’ Message
It is hard to believe that we are already in the month of June …
where has the year gone? Don’t be fooled though, June is a very
busy month for demonstrating our learning, as well as many other
events in the school.
We are excited to welcome Aussie X during the second week of
June. Students will learn the sport of Footy, while reinforcing a growth
mind-set. We will also have an Aussie X family event during our Fun
Fair on June 13. We hope to see all of our students and families at
Julliard from 5:30-7:30 for great food, sports and a fun-filled evening.
We will also be hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Reception on
Thursday, June 6 at 7:30pm in the school library to recognize all of the
volunteers who make Julliard a wonderful place. If you volunteered
at the school in any capacity (i.e., book fair, carnival, class trip,
movie night, etc.), we hope that you will join us for some refreshments
and finger-foods.
As you plan ahead for the summer, think about ways to take
advantage of the warmer weather and longer days. Going to our
city parks or hiking/riding on our trails are great ways to reconnect
with nature and rejuvenate our spirits.

Le caractère compte … Character Matters! In June, we focus on honesty, “L’honnêteté” : ”: I will be sincere, trustworthy and truthful. At school,
we encourage students to be honest, even when they’ve made a mistake and might be afraid of the
consequences.
At home:
- Acknowledge that telling the truth may not always be easy.
- Model honesty with your children. Share a story from your childhood when you were dishonest and
then discuss the impact of your dishonesty, what you could have done differently and how this
affected others.

Frozen Yogurt
For the month of June, frozen yogurt will only be available to
students who pre-ordered through School Cash Online. Thank you
for your continued support of our school fundraisers.
Thursday, June 27, 2019 Early Dismissal in Elementary Schools All schools in the York Region District School Board
are committed to improving student achievement and well-being. On Thursday, June 27, 2019, an early release day will take place to allow elementary teachers and support staff to take part in meetings during the afternoon of that day. These meetings will allow for school staff to engage in culminating activities regarding the review and revision of the School’s Improvement Plan as well as year-end and transition activities that support student success. As has been our practice in the past, students will attend school during the morning of Thursday, June 27, 2019 only. Students will be dismissed early that day at 11:00 am. Arrangements will be made to ensure that students who are normally bused to and from school will receive transportation at this time. Parents/guardians whose children attend after school child care should make appropriate arrangements to address this change in schedule.
Our Eco Team created a week of challenges for students and classes. All of our classes participated and did many things to help our environment. Please remember that we need to work every day to make sure that our choices help the environment.
Do you have a green
thumb? Are you good at
making things grow? Do you
love gardening?
If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these
questions, then we need your help.
Together with our Eco Team, Julliard
wants to clean-up, and spruce up,
our flower beds & gardens.
We have many students who would
like to help with this task too – but
we need some adults to help
supervise and guide students in the
clean-up process.
Please let the office know if you are
available any day or time (Monday-
Friday, 8:30-2:00).
Karate Kids 2019-2020
We are excited to announce that the very popular Karate Kids program will be returning to Julliard P.S. this upcoming September! This 40-minute class will run during the lunch recess on Wednesday’s in the fall in the gymnasium and combines fun fitness activity, character education lessons and non-contact basic martial arts movements. The class is designed to build self-confidence, self-discipline and fitness levels in a safe, non-competitive environment. Offered to students in grades 2 – 4, the 18 class program will run every Wednesday starting September 18th 2019 until January 22nd 2020 followed by a graduation ceremony at Northern Karate. Enrolment forms will be handed out to the students in the second week of September. This is a popular program that is currently running in over 85 schools across Ontario. You are invited to visit their website for more detailed information at www.karatekids.ca or call 416 482-8198.
ARE YOU MOVING?? If you will be moving by September 2019, please let us know as soon as possible. We are currently projecting our student enrolment for September 2019. These numbers help us hire sufficient staff and support personnel. It is important that we know as soon as possible if your child will not be attending Julliard in September. Thanks for your assistance in preparing for the next school year. Please call our office with any information: 905-832-3311.
Grade 8 Graduation This year’s Graduation ceremony will be held on Tuesday June 25, at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium at Maple High School. (Students are to be at Maple
for 5:30 p.m.). Afterwards, the student dinner and dance will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. at Premier Banquet Hall (696 Westburne Dr., Concord). Students will need to be picked up promptly at 11:00 p.m..
Aussie X is coming to Julliard!
Together with School Council, Julliard is excited to host the
Aussie X program from June 10-14. Students will be given
opportunities throughout the week to:
Build a growth mind-set (I can’t do it yet, but if I keep
trying I’ll get there);
Learn the sport of Footy;
Participate in workshops about mindfulness;
Build positive relationships with peers.
While School Council and the school are covering the majority
of the cost for this program, students are asked to pay $3 each
either through School Cash Online or by submitting payment to
your child’s teacher. Please visit https://www.xmovement.com/ for more information about the program.
Help us improve our websites We are refreshing the www.yrdsb.ca website and our school websites, and invite you to share your feedback through a brief survey. The information from the surveys will help us ensure that the content, navigation and layout meet the needs of students, families and community members.
Our websites provide important information about our school and Board, resources to help your child succeed, school programs and more.
The two-part survey is anonymous, confidential and voluntary, and should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. If you have any questions please contact [email protected].
The survey will be available until June 12 at bit.ly/YRDSBwebsurvey.
Vaping, cigarettes, and e-cigarettes We want to remind students and families that the use of electronic products such as vaping, electronic cigarettes and cigars as well as cartridges of nicotine solutions and related products are not permitted on or within 20 metres of school property. This means 20 metres beyond the school boundaries as opposed to simply off of school property. Health Canada reports health risks associated with vaping particularly for young people.
This is in compliance with the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, which is enforced locally by York Region Community and Health Services and the Tobacco and Smoke-Free Environment Policy and Procedure. A progressive form of discipline, including potential suspension from school and fines (up to $5,000), is in place for students who break the law.
For more information, visit Health Canada or the Board website. Partnership for Drug Free Kids also provides a resource on how to talk to your kids about vaping.
Please speak to your child about the health implications of using these products, as well as other substances (legal or illegal) that can have consequences on their well-being. Vaping products cannot be sold to anyone under the age of 19. Students who are found to be vaping on school property or in the school will be consequenced using our progressive discipline approach. Parents/guardians will be notified and provided with a letter outlining the offence and students will be asked to complete an education piece. This notification will serve as a warning with a clear understanding that if the student repeats the behavior then further consequences would occur (i.e. detention, suspension, etc.).
Jump Rope for Heart @ JPS On May 14th, the students and staff participated in Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart. We really enjoyed skipping and playing basketball outside in the fresh air. Together, we raised a total of $1373.00 and we thank our Julliard community for their contributions.
York Region is full of many free activities that you can do with your children this summer.
Take a hike! No really … there are many public hiking trails in York Region where you can explore and connect with nature.
Go online to find a free drop-in centre near your home. York Region offers free programs to caregivers and children at various locations around the region.
Visit one of Vaughan’s many public libraries for a book exchange, or program. They offer movies, lego clubs, chess lessons, etc. for children of all ages.
SUNNY DAYS AHEAD!! Although we do all we can to keep the school cool on hot days, please dress your child appropriately, keeping in mind our school’s dress code. Families are encouraged to apply sunscreen in the morning, before school. We appreciate student use of sunscreen for outdoor times. Please apply low-scented or unscented sunscreen lotion. There is no sharing of sunscreen lotion between students. Also remember that spray sunscreen is discouraged as it makes our floors slippery and is difficult to clean. Please be reminded that proper footwear (i.e., running shoes, sandals that are secure to the feet, etc.) is essential for safe outdoor play. Students should not come to school in flip flops as these can cause falls and injuries when students are
playing.
Message From Our Trustee
As we near the end of the school year, this is a good time to celebrate all your child has learned and achieved. I hope that you have seen evidence of their growth and learning throughout the year.
Supporting the well-being and achievement of our students is a partnership with families and communities, and I want to thank you for all that you do to help strengthen our schools and support your child’s learning. We know that when you ask your child about their learning, help them make connections or participate in school events, our students and our schools benefit.
I look forward to continuing to build relationships with families over the summer months and in the 2019-2020 school year. As we go into the summer, there are many opportunities to continue supporting your child’s learning - whether helping to plan a family trip, visiting a local museum, reading a book or participating in one of the many exciting summer learning programs offered through the Board. I hope that whatever you have planned, you have a safe and enjoyable summer.
I would also like to offer a special congratulations to the graduating class of 2019. We wish you all the very best as you move on to this next phase of your life. We look forward to welcoming back all of our new and returning families in the fall.

Mathematics is highly visual. Using visual representations will help enhance your child’s understanding of quantity, build fluency and flexibility with numbers and support the development of both spatial and algebraic reasoning.
Mathematical models can help support your child to think about numbers visually - improving both their understanding of quantity, promoting automaticity and flexibility with numbers.
