Uma intervenção urbana deve inte-grar-se no espaço onde se insere. Ao arquitecto importa perceber o contexto urbano e reinventá-lo.A densidade urbana do contexto da intervenção pode avaliar-se pela massa intensa de construção e a intensidade de comércio e ser-viços associados a um conjunto de edifícios de excepção e valor patrimonial muito expressivo.Inserir habitação num contexto urbano de características quase mono funcionais (comércio e ser-viços) implica estudar as rela-ções entre os domínios públicos e privado procurando o desenho e a escala adequada para os espa-ços de transição reinventando as fronteiras entre os diferentes tipos de espaços, tornando-os mais fluidos e dialogantes entre si, sem quebrar as condições par-ticulares de funcionamento iner-entes a cada uso.A proposta desenvolvida aproxima a volumetria e densidade de con-strução à escala dos quarteirões envolventes mas subverte a rela-ção entre cheios e vazios ao pro-por uma estrutura urbana aberta onde não há lugar ao logradouro privado à margem do espaço pú-blico, mas onde todo o espaço que não é edificado se desenha como espaço aberto e de transição en-tre público e privado, existente e proposto.

An urban intervention should be integrated in the space where it belongs. The architect should understand the urban context and reinvent it. The density of the urban con-text of the intervention can be evaluated by the intense mass of building and the intensity of trade and services associated with a set of special and heri-tage value of expressive build-ings.Place housing in an urban context of quasi mono-functional (trade and services) involves study-ing the relationships between the public and private domains looking for the design and ap-propriate scale for transitional spaces reinventing the boundar-ies between the different types of spaces, making them more fluid and dialoguing with each other without breaking the particular conditions of operation inherent to each use.The developed proposal approxi-mates the volumetric density and building scale of the sur-rounding blocks but subverts the relationship between solids and voids proposing an urban struc-ture where there is no place open to the private patio outside the public space, but where all the space is not built but designed as an open space and transition between public and private, ex-isting and proposed.

Perante um ambiente urbano que carece de uma identidade e de uma lógica organizacional cabe ao ar-quitecto entender o espaço e re-pensare-lo de maneira a obter uma morfologia urbana equilibrada. O meio urbano onde a interven-ção se insere caracteriza-se por uma construção desorganizada, sem planeamento e sem lógica de im-plementação, onde cada interven-ção assume uma linguagem própria, onde a cidade vai crescendo numa lógica de lote a lote.A consolidação da cidade assume assim dois momentos distintos mas que se complementam, onde se pro-cura dotar a cidade de linguagem e uma malha urbana dinâmica, tor-nando a cidade mais permeável e funcional, afastando-se da assim da cidade consolidada e com uma construção massificada. O equipa-mento surge como elemento central da proposta, pelo empreendedoris-mo que pode trazer a cidade como elemento dinamizador de turismo.A proposta desenvolvida assume-se como um elemento sólido e cen-tral onde existe se desenvolve numa lógica de cheio | vazio com uma linguagem bastante sólida e equilibrada capaz de sobressair aos olhos do utilizador do es-paço público. As circulações são os elementos chave da organização interior do equipamento por in-fluenciar a forma como os quartos estabelecem relações visuais com o exterior, e por também influen-ciar toda a organização funcional da proposta.

Given an urban environment that lacks an identity and an orga-nizational logic is up to the architect to understand the space and replane it in order to get a balanced urban morphology.The urban areas where the inter-vention takes place is character-ized by a disorganized construc-tion without planning and without logic implementation, where each action takes its own language, where the city is growing in a logic from batch to batch.The consolidation of the city thus assumes two distinct but complementary moments, which seeks to provide the city with a language and a dynamic urban fabric, making the city more per-meable and functional, far away from the consolidated city and a mass construction. The device appears as a central element of the proposal and entrepreneur-ship that can bring the city as a dynamic element of tourismThe developed proposal assumes itself a solid and center ele-ment where it develops a filled | empty logic with a very solid and balanced language able to excel in the eyes of the user of the public space. Circulations are the key elements of the organiza-tion inside the machine to influ-ence the way the rooms provide visual relationships with the outside, and also influence the functional organization of the whole proposal.

Muitos problemas de ordem so-cial podem ser resolvidos com uma intervenção arquitectónica. Cabe então ao arquitecto arranjar soluções capazes de manipular o contexto urbano.Num contexto urbano degradado e abandonado, são os problemas de ordem social existentes no centro histórico que se destacam, que teimam a existir e que remetem o local para uma realidade muito própria e que se separa do resto da cidade.Elaborar uma proposta capaz de dissipar esses problemas de or-dem social, implica formular uma estratégia que se aplicaria a todo o núcleo histórico onde os precursos seriam os principais potenciadores do local, incenti-vando os turistas a atravessarem o centro valorizando o património local. Este sistema permite uma diversidade de precursos, estab-elecendo reinterpretações e alte-rações constantes de direcção. A proposta pretende ser o elo principal de toda a estratégia de regeneração e que tem no programa apresentado para o piso térreo o principal gerador de fluxos con-stantes diários. A prosposta pre-tende unificar os edificios, onde na escada se obtém o elemento ex-cepção da proposta, que nos seus patameres de descanso estabelece ligações visuais com a envolvente e com o largo, onde recorrendo a arranjos exteriores pontuais pretende-se promover o convívio entre moradores e turistas.

Many social problems can be solved with an architectural in-tervention. It is then up to the architect to get solutions that handle the urban context.In an urban context degraded and abandoned, the social problems wich still exist in the historic center stand out, and refer the place with its own reality of separated from rest of the city. To develop a proposal capable of dissipating these social prob-lems, involves formulating a strategy that would apply to the entire historic core where the circuites would be the main enhancers of the site, encourag-ing tourists to cross the center valuing the heritage site. This system allows a variety of solu-tions, establishing reinterpre-tations and constant changes of direction. The proposal would be the main link of the whole regeneration strategy and where the program proposed to the ground floor would be the main generator of daily and constant flows. This proposal seeks to harmonize the buildings where the ladder is the exception element of the proposal, which in its resting patameres establishes visual con-nections with the surroundings and the public square where the outside is intended to promote interaction between residents and tourists.

O “friche industrial” é uma das derradeiras formas de repensar as cidades. Representam uma opor-tunidade por serem muitas vezes laboratórios de experimentação para inúmeros ilustres do campo criativo. Ao arquitecto compete perceber essa oportunidade e transforma-la em algo capaz de regenerar toda uma zona da ci-dade.O local insere-se numa malha urbana consolidada e degradada onde se verifica uma ausência de dinâmicas e vivências urba-nas, perante edificios de elevada carga memorial e que representam a cidade do Sec. XIX e XX.É neste contexto mono funcional do vazio urbano industrial que se pretende inserir um programa plurifuncional, dinâmico e cria-tivo capaz de regenerar toda uma dinâmica urbana, estabelecendo um elo de proximidade do habitante com o local, onde cada linha que deambula pelo espaço é associada a um programa, tornando o espaço público fluído e com possibili-dade de atravessamento, estabel-ecendo um diálogo do interior do quarteirão com o exterior.A proposta desenvolvida pretende acrescentar uma nova frente ao quarteirão, criando um atraves-samento pedonal onde o espaço público se sobrepõe ao privado, onde a intervenção tenta parecer neutra aos olhos do utilizador mas carregada de materiais indus-triais que estabelece uma ligação com o velho, com o antigo, alcan-çando ambos a sua expressividade máxima.

The “industrial void” is one of the ultimate ways to rethink cities. They represent an op-portunity, being experimentation laboratories often for numer-ous illustrious creative fields. The architect is responsible for realizing this opportunity and turns it into something capable of regenerating whole areas of the city. The place is part of a consoli-dated and degraded urban fabric where there is a lack of dynamics and an urban experience before high load memorial buildings and represents the city in Sec XIX and XX. It is in this context mono func-tional industrial urban context that we want to insert a multi-functional, dynamic and creative program able to regenerate an entire urban dynamics, establish-ing a close link with the local site, where each line that wan-ders through space is associated with a program, making the public space fluid with a possibility crossing, establishing a dialogue between the inside and the out-side.The developed proposal plans to add a new block to the front, creating a pedestrian crossing where the public space overlaps the private, where intervention tries to appear neutral in the eyes of the user but laden with industrial materials establish-ing a connection with the old, the ancient, reaching both their maximum expressiveness.
