  • To my two grandmothers: I love you wherever you are now!

  • 1

Once upon a time in a faraway country, there was a city called “Galiagos” where the

people lived in harmony and peace.

The women took care of their housework and

sang while the men followed their trade such

    as: blacksmith, cabinetmaker, farmer and

    shopkeeper.

There were no thieves and no villains.

Everybody was kind to each other.

All the children played in the streets, except

for Stephanos and his little sister Hessara,

who loved to go for walks in the forest.

One day, they saw a blue bird they had never

seen before and followed him very far from

    their home.

  • 3

When they arrived at the edge of a murky-

looking lake, they watched the bird fly away

into the sky, high above the clouds.

As they were about to leave the place to

return home, Stephanos noticed a white,

gleaming light deep within the trunk of a

    dying tree.

Being curious and ignoring his sister’s

objections, he reached with his arm into

    the trunk, Suddenly, he disappeared.

    Hessara shouted: “Stephanos! Stephanos!

    Come back!”

Terrified, she ran as fast as she could

    away from this cursed place.

  • As the sun went down she fell asleep, lost

and exhausted, under the branches of a

    willow tree.

The next morning, she remembered how her

brother had told her to always go south, in

order to find her way again in case something

    ever happened to him.

To do this, she had to rely on the sun and the

green moss which covered one side of the

    tree trunks.

This way, she managed to return to her

family who had been very worried by their

    absence.
