Hip-Hop and R&B Thrive in 2014
By Judah Blumenthal
According to an article recently completed by The Boombox, Hip-Hop and R&B, which have
both been very prolific in producing results thus
far in 2014, should continue to provide for
fans in July.
2014 has seen a steady stream of delivery from
both genres, a trend that should be continued
through the release of several new albums in over the course of the
next month.
The article starts by detailing the expected release of a new album from Robin Thicke. The album, entitled Paula, is clearly an entire track
list dedicated to apologizing to the
artist’s estranged wife, Paula Patton.
If the title of the tracks hadn’t been enough of an indicator, the lead
single and video, entitled ‘Get Her Back,’ has certainly confirmed
it; more often, the reaction of the public
has been a fair share of eye-rolling, instead of
the anticipated prompted sympathy.
The album is set to hit stores the first of July, which will allow the
public to see if ‘Get Her Back’ was the exception or the rule by which the success of the album will
be measured.
On the very same day, Trey Songz has a new album to be released, one that has
been much more positively received by critics and fans alike. ‘Trigga,’ which is set to feature a crazy cast of
contributors, such as Nicki Minaj, Ty Dolla $ign, Justin
Bieber and Juicy J, may actually have enough star-
power to match previous hit ‘Na Na,’ according to the
article.
‘Touchdown 2 Cause Hell,’ the first album to be
released by Lil Boosie since his release from prison
earlier this year, has had a fair share of promotion
from the Louisiana rapper himself, who claims that
the record will be the best double album to be
released since Tupac Shakur’s ‘All Eyez on Me.’
The article does caution that this is high praise for himself and indicates that
the rapper is nothing if not ambitious. The public will be able to decide on the comparison with its
release on the fifteenth of July.
Common’s next project, entitled ‘Nobody’s
Smiling,’ has grown a reputation of
anticipation, most notably for the eight
different album covers that are being produced.
The album, which will be the artist’s first work to be released since his 2011 hit
‘The Dreamer/The Believer,’ has notably been
inspired by the strife of Common’s hometown of Chicago, as seen by the
lead-in singles. The rest of the album will be available
for purchase as of the twenty-second of July.
Other smaller projects are noted to close out the
article. E-40’s ‘Sharp On All 4 Corners’ including all
four volumes, will be available in July. Krayzie
Bone’s ‘Chasing the Devil,’ and Cormega’s ‘Mega Philosophy,’ are
also both due out before the end of the month.
