A PLACE OF HISTORYSouthall’s unique character is shaped by

a rich and fascinating history.

The opening of the Grand Union Canal in the 1790s, followed by the Great Western Railway in 1838, fuelled commercial growth in the area, providing excellent connections to London and other parts of the country.

Among Southall’s thriving businesses were the Martin Brothers’ ceramics factory with their distinctive pottery

and the Maypole Dairy Company, which became the biggest margarine manufacturer in the world.

These early success stories formed the town’s industrial base and helped to attract a diverse population to the area. Southall officially became a municipal borough in 1936.
