The ComposerDeborah Baker Monday (ASCAP) is an active string music educator in the award-winning Logan City, Utah orchestra program. She received her B.M.E., Magna Cum Laude, from Florida State University with an emphasis in string education. She was awarded an academic fellowship to attend the University of Alabama where she received her M.M. in Composition. She continued her studies at Louisiana State University, where she received the Chancellor’s Award to participate with the LSU Symphony Orchestra under the di-rection of James Yestadt. She has studied theory and composition with Harold Schiffman, John Boda, Frederic Goossen, Paul Hedwell, and Dinos Constantinides.
Ms. Monday continued to be an active bass performer when she moved to Utah. After completing the coursework and passing the written and oral portions of the doctoral exams, she was hired to teach in the Logan City School District as a low string specialist. During her tenure with Logan, she has pursued her interest in composition and arranging for educational strings. Many of her published works have been honored as J.W. Pepper Editor’s Choice selections.
Ms. Monday has presented at numerous state music conferences throughout the United States, as well as several national ASTA conferences, The Midwest Clinic, and the prestigious Ohio State String Teacher Workshop. She is active as a guest conductor and adjudicator, and has received awards and commissions for her work. Her studies in composition and experi-ence in string teaching combine to make her one of the leading contributors to the repertoire for young string players. This has been a rewarding part of her career while she and her husband Bill, have raised four amazing children.
The CompositionMy association with Lisa Tiano and Parker Middle School Orchestra began with a Skype session. Ms. Tiano’s students were preparing my arrangement of Jupiter and requested a video call with me to complete the final touches for their festival performance.
The session was a huge success for Tiano’s orchestra and sparked a new friendship between Lisa and me. The subject of a commission was discussed and then presented for approval by the Chelmsford (Massachussetts) School District. Highly regarded in the community and school system, her request to commission me to compose an original work for her middle school orchestra was quickly set into motion! And what an honor for me to be asked.
The guidelines set by Lisa Tiano included a specific request: there had to be a cello solo so that a dedicated cellist in the orchestra could have a special opportunity in the performance. She also wanted the piece to symbolize the bittersweet emotions felt at the end of the school year when 8th graders are promoted to high school after experiencing three transfor-mative middle school years. With saying farewell to each other and moving on, the music was written to represent feelings of joy and accomplishment, but with a tinge of sadness. However, the ultimate emotion in the music represents the personality of Lisa Tiano, an incredible educator who sees the best in all circumstances. And without question, the title of this commission became, Jubilation!
The music flows from being noble, nostalgic, reflective, energetic to explosive, with dance-like qualities at the end. Students will play in varying tempos and tonalities, but within the level of a strong middle school ability.
