1. Early life

• Born in Guipúzcoa (1476)• A huge experience as a sailor• He took part of a military

expedition (1509)• Stablished in Seville • Joined the Magellan expedition

(1519)

2. Magellan expedition

• Naval commander, 5 ships with a fleet of 241 men from Spain

• Dissatisfaction and severe weather

• 1521, conflicts with the nearby island of Rota

• April 1521, Magellan was killed in Filipinas

• Elcano leader of ship Victoria• Arrived Molucas islands, began

the return to Spain.

3.Loaise expedition

• The García Jofre de Loaísa was a maritime spanish expedition (1525-1536) In this expedition Elcano died by scurvy.

• It objetive was colonize the Moluccas isles, in Indonesia.

• The expedition was formed by seven ships and 450 men. Only 24 of them survived.

• Three ships sunk before cross the streigh of

Magellan, and only one arrived to the Moluccas

Isles at last.

4. Honors• The king Charles the First gave to

him 500 gold ducats and a shield where we can read: “The first person who rounded me”, in latin.

• The Spanish Army has his name in it, as recognition.

Juan Sebastián Elcano helped us to understand a little more the enormity of our planet.Therefore, he sacrificed his own life for it
