President’s Message

Greetings Fellow JTC Running Members

I don’t know about you but the older I get the faster the years go sweeping by. Not sure why that happens. I don’t feel older but my kids all own homes have careers and seem to act more and more like their parents, so I guess I am…

In this issue you’ll find a slate of dedicated volunteers that are willing to give up some of their free time to assist in the governance of the JTCR Board in 2011. But attending a meeting or two a month is only part of what they do. As with many volunteer organizations such as JTCR you’ll find that a small subsection of members tend to conduct a large portion of the work; keeping the club and its races, social and community events running. That is not to say that we don’t have volunteers within the membership. Indeed we do and they’re greatly appreciated - without them we’d accomplish very little. Please take time to review the brief biographies of each board member and feel free to reach out to them with any suggestions you feel will improve the club. This is your club and your board.

Also, remember that committee assignments do not require board membership. After the first of the year committee chairs will be assigned and we’ll need volunteers to help us achieve 2011 goals. We need folks with a cross section of talents and I’m certain you can find a committee that interests you so be on the look-out in January.

On a personal note, 2010 will be my last year on the board (for now). Unfortunately, my ‘day job’ changed earlier in the year

and my new responsibilities require that I travel extensively. I don’t feel comfortable missing meetings and certainly do not want to be relied on for something I may not be able to deliver.

I leave the board knowing that we have a great team of dedicated individuals that care very deeply about the club, your club. We’ve accomplished a lot these past two years that I served as President and I’m proud of what we’ve done. Perhaps most importantly, for the first time in our club’s history, the new incoming board will each sign a Conflict of Interest Disclosure in accordance with our new Conflict in Interest By-Law change adopted earlier this year.

As I leave, I know that my seat will be filled by someone with fresh ideas and the desire to move the club forward. There is so much left undone and our potential as a club is limited only by the desire to make change happen. I can’t thank the Executive Committee and board enough for all the support they’ve given me and the dedication they give to the club year over year. Most of all, I appreciate all the comments, mostly supportive and sometimes not so much, from those of you that felt passionate enough to share with me over the last 24 months. Keep that passion and turn it into action!

I wish you all a happy holiday season and as always, see you on the road.

"Vote for the Movie to See the Movie"Submitted by Gary Ledman

“Hood to Coast: The Movie” will premier in about 500 theaters nationwide on January 2011, and if you want to see a movie that’s really about running, in an event unlike almost any other, you have to go online and cast a vote to bring it to a theater near you. Go to hoodtocoastmovie.com, click on “Request the movie” and enter your e-mail address and ZIP code, and with an outpouring of support, we can all see the movie on that second Tuesday in January. While you’re there, check out the trailer and, under “Explore,” the clips on each of the four teams of average runners who were chronicled for the film. Watch a little, and I think you’ll want to see the whole thing. Maybe you’ll even dream of taking part. The Hood to Coast Relay is an annual Oregon adventure, the fourth weekend of August, of about 195 miles made by 1,000 teams of 12 runners, starting at the Timberline Lodge (elev. 6,000 feet) about halfway up Mount Hood, running through Portland and then northwest through the countryside to the Pacific Ocean at Seaside, which is also the end of the Lewis and Clark trail (see the statue!). Each runner covers 15 to 17 miles over three legs ranging from 4 to 8 miles while the rest of the team provides moral support from vans headed to the next relay point. Teams take between 16 and 31 hours to go the distance, napping upright in the back seat of the van or in sleeping bags on a high school wrestling mat, snacking on bananas and bagels and peanut butter with an occasional spaghetti supper, pancake breakfast or barbecue lunch along the way. I am one of two JTC Running members I’m aware of – Steve Williams is the other – who can say he participated in Hood to Coast (2001-03). When I watched the previews of the movie, I felt as if I was watching my team, and all kinds of memories came flooding into my brain. But you don’t have to be a Hood to Coast veteran, just a runner, an athlete, a human being, to appreciate it and this view of it. I hope you’ll check it out and help bring “Hood to Coast the Movie” to Northeast Florida.

"It’s Worth It, Just Watch the Cost"By Bob Fernee

With great interest, I recently read an article in the periodical South Florida Triathlon News entitled, “Is Triathloning Worth It?” The author, who calls himself “JG” makes the point that, despite these hard times, the rather expensive sport of triathlon continues to grow. He totals up the cost of the sport, including a price tag of some $2,500 for a good (entry level) bicycle, about another $200 for running shoes and $150 or so for swimming gear. Of course, that’s before Tri Guy pays for airfare, hotels, and meals for all those out-of-town races. Entry fee for any Ironman Triathlon is bound to set him back $550 and even the shorter races can be pretty pricey. But more expensive are the incalculable costs associated with the triathlon that JG, a triathlete, admitted. Training: the long, time-consuming cycle rides, the running and the swimming of seemingly endless laps. Additionally, many triathletes spend a lot of time tossing barbells in the gym. Fitness club memberships cost plenty too. Naturally, all this creates havoc on human relationships, which was the real point of the article.

I am not picking on the triathlon; distance runners are about as bad. The problem with the triathlon is that it takes the commitment of the runner and multiplies it by three or four. More regimens: the swim, the bike, the run. That’s a lot of time, energy, expense and devotion; the sort of devotion and attention that spouses and kids cry out for. If anyone should know it should be me. In my younger days my crazed running obsession surely did not do my marriage any good. I did not fall alone; the divorce rate amongst runners is pretty steep. Not long ago I received a phone call from a rather distraught woman who said her husband was facing his 50th birthday and now he wanted to run in an Ultra race. “What exactly is an Ultra race?” she asked. “Anything longer than a marathon,” I replied. “How far is that?” she enquired with more than a touch of fear and dread in her voice. “Twenty-six and two-tenths miles,” I said. “He’s craaaazzzzzyyyyy!” she exclaimed in a blood-curdling voice. “Another spouse bites the dust,” I thought to myself. I continued: “Ultra races are usually 50 or 100 kilometers, or 100 or 50-milers.” “Yes, I heard him say something about a 50-mile run,” she said. For a birthday present she wanted to find him a coach who could advise him, since he seemed bound and determined to do a 50 on his 50. I suggested one, Jay Birmingham, a local fellow who once ran across the entire USA, then across Death Valley and several times up and down Pikes Peak. At one time to Jay, a 50-miler was just a jog down the street. I don’t know if she ever contacted Jay, or if the guy went ahead with his Ultra. Maybe he gave in and decided to do what so many insecure half-century men do, bought a sports car or a mistress. Perhaps both. To run is good; it promotes good health, lowers cholesterol, the heart rate, blood pressure, stress level, improves muscle tone and helps control a person’s weight. It can even improve one’s social life. But don’t get carried away. If you are not a serious Olympic contender or on the brink of a world record, don’t lose your head. As “JG” said at the end of his piece: “Just remember, ultimately the bill will arrive and hopefully your account will not be overdrawn.” The dollar cost is forgotten long after the emotional one lingers on. Be careful.

JTC Running Minutes JTC Running Minutes Continued

JTC RUNNING BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTESTuesday, September 7, 2010

President David Hall called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. Directors Margaret Barton, Carol Fitzsimmons, Michael Fitzsimmons, Rex Reed, Jo Shott, and Owen Shott were absent. David Moritz, our Team Coordinator, attended the meeting and JTCR member Doug Phillips attended the beginning of the meeting.

Approval of 8/3/10 minutes: The minutes from the August meeting were approved as submitted.

Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Bonnie Brooks distributed copies of the Balance Sheet and the Profit & Loss Detail, and then reviewed the documents with the board. Bonnie notified the board that she would be away on vacation from September 14 through 21. She reminded us that we still owe The Bolles School for the track workouts.

OLD BUSINESS:

• By-Law Review Update – The Ad Hoc Committee that is working on the By-Law Review had emailed the current by-laws to the Election Process Update Committee for their consideration in relation to their task.

• Election Process Update – At the August meeting, the task force distributed a draft of preliminary recommendations to the board. The board discussed, questioned, and suggested, then dispatched the task force to refine the recommendations. Larry Roberts, speaking for the task force, added new recommendations. Larry Roberts moved that the board accept the task force’s recommendations – considerable discussion ensued yet no conclusion was reached. The board requested that the task force send a written copy of the entire motion to each board member and agreed that an email vote would be accepted in lieu of a show of hands at the meeting. The next day, the following motion was emailed (or faxed) to each board member:

The motion is to amend the by-laws of the club by adding a Section 8 and a Section 9 to Article IV – Directors, and to add a sentence to Section 1, Article V - Officers:

Article IV - Directors Section 8: Directors shall serve for a term of two calendar years, with ten positions being elected in even numbered years and ten positions elected in odd numbered years. To facilitate the transition from one to two year terms in the Board election for 2011 the ten nominees with the highest vote count will be designated odd year Directors and serve for 2011 and 2012. The next ten nominees will be designated even year Directors and serve for 2011. The ten even year Director positions will be elected to serve two year terms for 2012 and 2013. Section 9: Nominees for Board of Directors

shall be approved by an Executive Committee of the corporation consisting of the President, Vice-president, Secretary, and Treasurer. A majority vote of the Executive Committee shall be required to disqualify a nominee.

Article V – Officers: Section 1. The Treasurer shall be nominated by the President and confirmed by a majority vote of the Directors.

The motion passed by an email and fax vote of 16 to 1. The by-laws will now be updated to include the new sections and the new sentence.

• Statue Update – Trib La Prade accompanied several of our women board members to get another look at the statue. They made recommendations which Derby, our sculptor, will incorporate into the statue. There will be more opportunities for us to review the clay sculpture before it is sent to the foundry to be cast in bronze.

Tuesday, October 5, 2010

Vice President Larry Roberts called the meeting to order at 7:08 p.m. Directors Jo Shott and Owen Shott, as well as President David Hall, were absent.

Approval of 9/7/10 minutes: The minutes from the September meeting were approved as corrected, as we had the wrong date for the October meeting originally.

Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Bonnie Brooks distributed copies of the Balance Sheet, the Profit & Loss Detail, and a Budget vs Actual sheet. During review, Bonnie pointed out that our results so far are not as negative as budgeted, although we still have some big bills to pay. She told us that our taxes have been completed and mailed but the fee was higher than budgeted due to the increased complexity of our return. Bonnie also mentioned that we haven’t yet concluded the expenses on the 2010 Guana Trail 50K. She ended the report by telling the board she will be on vacation Oct. 12 thru Oct. 18.

OLD BUSINESS:

• By-Law Review Update – The Election Process Task Force completed their job by amending the by-laws with new language that addresses the changes in our election process. It is now the By-Law Revision Ad Hoc Committee’s job to appropriately update the document and file it with the proper agency in the State of Florida.

• Statue Update – Lamar Strother and Douglas Tillett, accompanied by Mariel Fleming (Tillett’s niece), visited Derby Ulloa’s studio on Oct. 2 for one last review of the “clay” statue. Our representatives found the statue acceptable so it will now be transported to the foundry by our sculptor (Ulloa) to be cast in bronze. Passing this milestone means it is time to make the 2nd payment of $16,000 to Derby. The board was reminded that a second plaque for the female statue will be needed.

• Board Members Who Have Missed Multiple Meetings – there is a requirement that all JTC Running board members attend all monthly board meetings but we have six board members who have reached or exceeded the three-meeting-maximum-absence standard. Lamar Strother made a motion, seconded by Rex Reed, that we accept these six board members to stay for the remainder of the year. Following lengthy discussion, the motion passed.

NEW BUSINESS:

• Guest Speaker – Jane Alred has remained in contact with Dick Beardsley and reports that he still has an interest in speaking to us, just as we remain interested in him visiting here to speak. It was noted that the budget still has this event funded. Jane will work toward finalizing plans for a speaking date close to the Gate River Run, and that we will have him speak to high schools as well as members of our club and community.

• Election for 2011 Board of Directors – the election will be conducted per the improvements adopted by the board at last month’s meeting. During discussion, we decided that “bios” would be 100 words maximum again this year and that we would count the votes on Tuesday, Dec 21, at a site yet to be determined.

• Sulzbacher Night – Margaret Barton said she’d organize another volunteer session for our club to feed the homeless at the Sulzbacher Center. She made a motion, seconded by Bonnie Brooks, that we allocate $500 to carry out this project. The motion passed.

NEW BUSINESS:

• Trib La Prade noted that one of the suggestions for election improvement was to explore the notion of voting on-line. Trib said that we are working to make that possible but it will not be ready for the election coming up in December.

• President Hall noted that he will miss three meetings this year but that his wish is that he stay on the board for the remainder of the year. Larry Roberts made a motion, seconded by Colleen Clarson, that David Hall be retained as President and board member for the remainder of 2010. The motion passed.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

RACE COMMITTEE – The committee will be discussing the replacement for Lamar Strother as Director of the Track Series after the 2011 series. AJ Hart was discussed as someone who is qualified. It was noted that Ron Brooks has equipment for timing track meets. Letitia Silas’s name was brought up as a possible successor. The Race Committee will take care of this.

Gate River Run (3/13/10) – Director Doug Alred said they are already looking forward to next year’s race.

John TenBroeck Memorial Winter Beach Run – Race Director Doug Alred said the next running of this event will be February 6 at 2 p.m.

Carrabba’s Summer Beach Run – Race Director Doug Alred said the August 28th race went OK, with Stuart Toomey in charge.

CLASSES & CLINICS – Our JTC Running Half Marathon Training Class, coached by John Metzgar, is underway with a good turn-out.

COMMUNITY & PUBLIC RELATIONS – Larry Sassa said the committee is looking at publicity for the placing of the new statue on the River Walk, for a projected January unveiling.

FINANCE COMMITTEE – No further report other than what Bonnie told us earlier in the meeting.

MEMBERSHIP – No report.

MERCHANDISE – No report.

NEWSLETTER – Doug Philips suggested we start a running blog. No action was taken at this meeting.

WEBSITE – No report.

SOCIAL & BANQUET – Jane Alred polled the board to see if we would like to hold another “Jingle Bell” type run in San Marco again this year, similar to what we did in 2009. The board liked the idea.

VISION & PLANNING – Doug Alred, committee chair, said the statue development is the committee’s primary concern at this time.

SPECIAL CONCERN – It was reported that Bob Carr was hospitalized.

NEXT MEETING – The next meeting will be Tuesday, October 5, at 7 p.m. at Mediterrania Restaurant.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:38 p.m.

Douglas Tillett, JTC Running Secretary, has respectfully written and submitted these minutes.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

RACE COMMITTEE – The committee will again discuss trying to find a replacement for Lamar Strother as Director of the Track Series after the 2011 series. A meeting was set for Oct 19 (Tues) at 7 pm, which will follow the Finance Committee meeting.

Gate River Run (3/12/11) – Director Doug Alred said the launching of the 2011 race will be happening soon. The updated webpage will be “up” shortly.

John TenBroeck Memorial Winter Beach Run (2/6/11) – Race Director Doug Alred said the race is on track.

Carrabba’s Summer Beach Run – Race Director Doug Alred said that he believed the winners of this year’s race have been paid. The Final Accounting is outstanding.

Last Gasp – Bob Fernee told the board of his conversation with Herb Taskett. They were considering revamping the Last Gasp into an inexpensive event to run, with no shirt and considered JTCR membership as prizes. David Frank made a motion that we assign the race committee to investigate, but he withdrew the motion. Bob Fernee made a motion, seconded by Mike Fitzsimmons, authorizing the purchase of up to $1,000 of special socks as Last Gasp awards for the next several years. The motion passed.

CLASSES & CLINICS – No report.

COMMUNITY & PUBLIC RELATIONS – Larry Sassa said the committee is focused on the plaque needed for our new statue and on the tent for Gate River Run.

FINANCE COMMITTEE – Bonnie Brooks called a meeting for Oct 19 at 6:30 pm for a presentation from the Kids Tri. The location will be the Pizza Palace - Baymeadows

MEMBERSHIP – No report.

MERCHANDISE – Carol Fitzsimmons said the committee is looking ahead to expand our offerings, perhaps to a cap or a visor.

NEWSLETTER – David Frank announced that we need to search for a new committee head. He will not be returning to head the committee in 2011.

WEBSITE – No report.

SOCIAL & BANQUET – Jane Alred will plan a December event in San Marco, similar to last year’s event.

VISION & PLANNING – Doug Alred, committee chair, said the statue development is the committee’s primary concern at this time.

NEXT MEETING – The next meeting will be Tuesday, November 2, at 7 p.m. at Mediterrania Restaurant.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:43 p.m.

Douglas Tillett, JTC Running Secretary, has respectfully written and submitted these minutes.

DOUG ALREDDoug is co-owner of 1st Place Sports and has served as Director of the Gate River Run since 1982. He also serves as Race Director for over 40 races a year. Doug began running in 1963. “I think that JTC Running should work closely with local government to add more running trails in North Florida. Our club should also become more involved in youth running. The adidas Junior River Run has about 2,000 runners each year, so children will take part in these events if we produce them.” JANE ALRED Jane is co-owner of 1st Place Sports. She has served as the Race Director for the Summer Beach Run for several years and has co-directed many events with her husband, Doug. She has served as a volunteer at the Gate River Run for all 32 years. Jane currently serves on JTC Running's Social and Classes & Clinics Committees. She began running in 1977. “JTC Running is great at producing running events and has the best races in the state. We need to get our members more involved in the monthly socials and clinics. We need to offer more training programs for new runners.”

MARGARET BARTONHello…I am completing my second year as a JTC Running board member. I love being part of the Jacksonville running community and will continue to embrace opportunities to be of service. Accomplishments this year include coordinating efforts to help ensure that morning and afternoon track workouts are available to our members, spearheading volunteer nights at the Sulzbacher Center, and coordinating with high school scholarship recipients. I am committed to serving JTC Running in a community-minded way, to identifying ways to bring the running community together, and to promoting physical and mental health through running.

BONNIE BROOKSBonnie has worked at Mayo Clinic for 24 years as an RN in SICU/Transplants. As the current JTC Running Treasurer, she has had many learning experiences. Her organizational skills eased her into that position of financial responsibility and decision making. Bonnie began running in her 30's and believes anyone can adopt healthy lifestyles at any age. She helps coworkers develop running routines and encourages patients’ commitments to exercise and rehabilitation. “JTC Running does a great job promoting f i tness and a social atmosphere for al l ages. I would l ike to see us focus on high r isk groups in the hope of decreasing preventable medical condit ions while increasing self esteem!”

COLLEEN CLARSONColleen has been a JTC Running member for more than 20 years. She is serving her second “stint” on the board of directors, is a member of the club’s Community and Publ ic Relat ions Committee, volunteered for our Elect ion Improvement Task Force, and is our primary l iaison with Gate Petroleum for the Gate River Run. Colleen is also a cert i f ied personal trainer. She would l ike to make sure we cont inue to posi t ion JTC Running as “THE running community” that welcomes and encourages f i tness enthusiasts of a l l ski l l levels. Colleen works to keep Jacksonvil le as “one of the Nation’s Top Ten Running Cit ies,” as we were designated by Runner’s World in 2001.

RICHARD FANNINRichard has been involved in the local running community since 1977. He rejoined the JTC Running board two years ago af ter be ing a board member for severa l years in the 1990s. R ichard’s past responsib i l i t ies inc lude edi tor of The Star t ing L ine, organiz ing bus t r ips to the Paul DeBruyn race in Ormond Beach, and serving as Race Director of the Ginger Fannin Couples Relay. BOB FERNÉEBob began runn ing in the ear ly 1970’s whi le in Eng land and jo ined JTC Running in 1978. He has served twice on the board of directors. Bob founded The Last Gasp cross-country race and for s ix years brought the Ravines Run back to l i fe for JTC Running . Bob served as the cross-country coach at Jacksonvi l le Univers i ty dur ing the ear ly 80’s. He wr i tes about running for our newsletter and is also a regular columnist with The Beaches Leader newspaper, covering local running. Bob thinks our events and our community involvement are what JTC Running does best. “The club is instrumental in making Jacksonvil le one of the f inest areas anywhere for running. I plan to help continue that tradit ion.”

Meet the JTC Running 2011 Board of Directors!

JTC Running is managed by a group of 20 volunteers who are all JTC Running members and who meet monthly to discuss the club’s business, plan our events, and execute our vision for the future of running in Jacksonville. We hold an election each December so that the club’s members can vote for the 20 candidates of their choice to sit on next year’s board. It happens that this year we have exactly 20 candidates who have volunteered for board duty (which some of our past directors might call “bored” duty, but we’ll ignore them for the moment.) The “Year 2010” directors decided at the last meeting that if we didn’t have 21 or more candidates running for the 2011 board, we would declare all of the candidates to be “on the board” without holding an actual vote; therefore, all 20 of the volunteers will make up the JTC Running board of directors for 2011. We thought that you might like to read the short bio that each of our directors submitted for the ballot and take a look at their picture. Whenever you see us at an event or wherever, feel free to zero in and praise us for the outstanding job we’re doing. Or whatever. We thank you for your membership in JTC Running!

Outreach to elementary schools is important, encouraging physical activity before a sedentary lifestyle takes root.”

Have you ever seen yourself run? Probably not, maybe you caught a quick glimpse of yourself while running past a shop window, but that’s about it. If you actually saw yourself in the act, chances are, you’d be appalled at your form.

Form: It’s a thing we’ve all heard of, but really, what is it? More to the point, how can you and ‘good form’ be one and the same?

People with good form always make it look so easy. It doesn’t matter if they are playing tennis, soccer, golf, or ballroom dancing. It looks so simple and silky that you say to yourself, “I could do that.”

Aside from merely looking bad, your running form could be inefficient, causing you to labor unnecessarily, which slows you down; it can also provoke injuries.

There are four steps that encompass what is known as Good Form Running.

1) Posture: stand tall and straight with toes pointing forward. Run with your head up and your gaze in front of you. Why? Because if you are all hunched over you make your body carry you like a lead weight. Standing erect takes the weight off and your body carries you, rather than the other way round and running is more effortless.

2) Midfoot: Land on the middle portion of your foot, rather than the back of the heel. Do not land on the forefoot, which causes calf and Achilles tendon strain. Landing on the heel slows the transition to the toe-off and can also result in over-striding, which causes a braking effect.

3) Cadence: This is sometimes referred to as ‘turnover’, or the number of times your legs come through and your feet hit the ground. The optimum number is 180-foot hits per minute. See if your left or right foot hits the ground 90 times over the course of 60-seconds. Run light and avoid pounding.

4) Lean: Do not lean from the waist but from the ankles. Use gravity to your advantage. Keep arms at a 90-degree angle, do not let them cross the mid-point of the body, let them swing naturally. Keep the knees bent in order to absorb shock.

I wouldn’t be surprised if all this seems a bit intimidating and overwhelming, after all, isn’t running supposed to be the simplest of all sports? “Count my steps; don’t be ridiculous.”

It is not as complicated as it sounds and anyway, you are probably doing most of it without thinking. But like ‘Barefoot Running’ and ‘Minimalism’, ‘Good Form Running’ is the latest thing and unlike the others, it might actually do you more good than harm.

You can learn more about GFR on the website, www.goodformrunning.com, or you can have yours checked at the new GFR clinics performed by 1st Place Sports. The clinics are free and take place at three of their stores-Baymeadows Road, South 3rd St., Jacksonville Beach and Park Avenue, Orange Park- most Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m.

Sign up online at www.1stplacesports.com/goodformrunning. Better make it fast, though, as classes are popular and limited to 15 persons.

LAMAR STROTHERLamar was one of the eleven founding fathers of JTC Running and received the Florida RRCA Volunteer of the Year Award for many years of service to the club. He maintains the JTC Running Hot l ine Phone, has directed the Summer Track Series for a very long t ime, and is the Volunteer Coordinator for other JTC Running events. Lamar does not run at th is t ime but r ides an exercise bike and l i f ts l ight weights to stay in good shape. He feels the best thing the running club does is print a newsletter. He would l ike to see the entry fees to races lowered.

DOUGLAS TILLETTDouglas says he runs because he isn’t any good at sports involving bal ls. He cannot catch, he throws l ike a gir l , and his hitt ing is awful. Fortunately, even uncoordinated people can run, and he’s st i l l racing pretty wel l af ter 28 years of running for fun and f i tness. He has served on JTC Running’s board of directors since 1994, loves our races, is on three club committees, is currently Secretary Tillett, helps out with our Metzgar-coached group runs, and is on the JTC Running Racing Team. Douglas is eager for another great JTC Running year ahead and is grateful for al l the blessings that running has brought him.

STUART TOOMEYStuart began working at 1st Place Sports four years ago, working in the store helping customers, unti l he shifted his focus to the race off ice. He has been the Assistant Race Director for the last year, t iming al l of 1st Place Sports’ races, including the Gate River Run. Stuart oversees all the timing equipment and is in charge of results output. “I feel that I can help JTC Running grow by help ing to improve races and by gett ing the younger community more involved. I bel ieve that my race management experience in over 150 races wil l be an asset to the club.”

JIM VAN CLEAVEJim works for CSXT as Director of Marketing for the Metals Business Unit. He has been involved in running for 39 years and ran competit ively in high school and college. Jim is interested in introducing the benefits that running has on one’s life and helping others reach their potential through running. Jim brings many years of running experience, both competit ively and for f itness, to JTC Running , along with a business background and board experience. He feels one of the best aspects of JTC Running is i t supports the running community and offers a high qual ity race product. He is also interested in development of a JTC Running kids program

There is a pretty clever bumper sticker that you have probably seen around, Cross Country: The Sport You Don’t Play. One way or another, it may not be long before we see one that reads, Cross Country: The Sport You Don’t See. This noble, at one time very popular form of running is slowly becoming a thing of the past. Sure, for kids it is still holding on in high school and college, even though many public high schools are finding it hard to field full teams, but for adults in the post-college world, cross country races are few and far between. This is especially true in our fair town. Some might say that the sport’s downfall is because there just aren’t enough good venues where a proper cross country race can be staged. Certainly that is a huge problem around here, no doubt about it. But cross country, like track, may just be a victim of the times caused by a change in public taste, as well as the runners themselves. The marathon gets all the glory and its little brother, the half-marathon, does all the growing. The half-marathon has been the fastest growing race distance for some years. People are now joining training groups that point toward a specific event. This means that many events are missed or ignored by this new generation of runners. Cross country and track are particularly neglected. I have often written about the ethereal joys of cross country running as well as its lamentable fate. The fact is, unfortunately, not many people seem to care.

They should. Running on mother earth is not only good for your body, giving bones and joints a rest from hard-surface pounding and making you stronger due to less rebound, but it feels good to the soul. It is the whole back-to-nature thing. No cars, no noise, no modern day madness. And if you’re into the new ‘minimalism’ movement it is an excellent place to practice it. I call upon all JTC Running members to come out and support one of the last remaining true cross country races we have, The Last Gasp. For whatever personal reason that you might come up with, run or walk this race. Any reason is a good one. If it is the low entry fee, that’s fine. If it is the commercial-free, custom sweatshirt, that’s good too. The accurate (not like last year), genuine cross country course or the wonderful camaraderie and free food and beer at the post-race party/awards presentation are both perfectly good reasons. Or maybe you like the age group merchandise awards. That’s a good one. Suspense might be killing you and you want to find out what those mysterious, special awards that the top ten men and top five women are going to win. Can’t blame you for wanting to know. The Last Gasp 5K takes place on Sunday, December 26, at 2 p.m. The course will wind its way all over the campus of Jacksonville University. The race began in 1977 and has been a crowd-pleaser ever since. Come out and have some fun; and that’s the best reason for running of them all.

Bob Carr’s River Run Tips (The Unofficial Version)

1. No alcohol the night before.

2. Don’t overdress – it’s not a fashion show. And no new shoes! Wear an old shirt. Don’t forget Vasoline and socks.

3. Get to the race start in time to talk to people, enjoy the crowd, and relax.

4. Don’t run according to a friend. When the gun goes off, you have no friends. They are competitors.

5. Cut tangents – look up 20 yards or so, easing to the appropriate side.

6. Drink plenty of fluids, especially during the early part of the race.

7. Thank volunteers and police officers.

8. Pick out a runner up front and catch up to him/her within 10 seconds.

9. Come alongside someone, asking ‘How are you doing?’ Chatter helps.

10. Consider treating parts of the race as intervals. Run hard for 3 minutes, recover 1 minute.

11. Concentrate all the time while running.

12. Treat bridges as a Monday night drill.

13. Top of the bridge – everyone slows down but NOT YOU! Take off at the top, passing people. If you are not passing people, you are going too slow. Use that last burst of speed – you can hear and see the finish line.

14. Forget water at this stage of the race.

15. Smile at the finish line – you know you did your best.

JTC Running Track Workouts

Looking to set a personal best or just interested in camaraderie with fellow runners? JTC Running sponsors morning and evening track workouts every Wednesday at The Bolles School. The interval workouts are led by highly experienced runners who welcome runners of all ability levels.

Morning Session: 5:30-7:00 a.m., Coach JC Pinto

Evening Session: 5:30-7:00 p.m., Coach Danny Weaver

What to Expect: The workout generally starts with a ~one-mile warm up along San Jose Blvd. The group then heads to the track for repeats of distances ranging from 200 meters to 1600 meters. The track workout (usually ~3-4 miles) is followed by a ~one-mile cool down run.

PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS:

1. For insurance purposes, you must be a JTC Running member.

2. Prior to your first workout, you will need to get a Bolles ID for school security purposes. You can get the Bolles ID between 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on the first Monday of each month. Please stop by the guard gate and the security guard will run your drivers’ license through the Raptor program (a sexual predator data base). They will then direct you to another building to get your photo taken. The cost is $5 (cash only) and takes 10 minutes. (Note: The security guard may or may not check your ID at the gate on any given day, but all participants are required to have one as part of our agreement with the school. If random spot checks reveal participants without IDs, our arrangement with the school will be jeopardized).

3. You will be asked to sign a waiver upon your first workout.

More Information: If you are interested in joining the Wednesday track workouts or would like more information, please contact JC (803-8758) for the morning workout or Danny (287-5496) for the evening workout.
